Vojtěch, Jaroslav, Josef Novák and Fr. Bidlo, illustrators
Czechoslovakia (Jaromer): Václav Vavra; F. R. Ždárský, 1945. Various sizes, from 15 × 20 to 14.5 × 11.2 cm). Original embossed or printed card and paper wrappers; one title rebound preserving original wrapper and flaps; 12 leaves of full-page color plates with text to versos; 35, [4]; [35]; and 48, [3] pp. respectively. Two titles (3 and 4) signed and inscribed by the author. Four curious and scarce volumes of satirical anti-German epigrams, one of them with striking full-page color caricatures, others illustrated by the well-known caricaturist František Bidlo (1895-1945). All books were ostensibly written during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia and published right after the end of World War II ("in the beginning of the demise of the German master race," according to the colophon). Nos. 3 and 4 even claim to have been published -- obviously at great personal risk to anyone involved -- in late 1944 and in January of 1945, in "The Reich", and one bears an inscription dated July 8, 1944. The epigrams, in turns witty, silly, or plain graphomanic, are often puns on Nazi slogans; a few are partly or completely in German, e.g.: "Kennst Du das Land, wo Neid und Dummheit blüht? / Du kennst es nicht? - Es heisst Sudetengebiet." After annexing the Sudeten region in 1938, Hitler proceeded to invade the Czechoslovak Republic in 1939, establishing the Protectorate that fell only with Germany's capitulation after the war. According to KVK and OCLC, 1. is held by Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Hoover and Yale, 2. only by Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, and 3. and 4. can be found at the Cze … [Click Below for Full Description]

NP: NP. Manuscript. Half Leather. Very Good. 7 Original Watercolors, Etc.. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" This unique hand-made book is composed of three Katherine Mansfield short stories, with text hand-typed in a small sans serif face, illustrated with seven original paintings and drawings. The short stories are "The Doll's House", "A Dill Pickle", and "Psychology". The typed text averages 36 lines per page. The work is bound in half brown morocco over matching cloth. It is near fine, with only the faintest traces of wear. [6 blank], [45] pages of text and plates, [5 blank], broken up into 3 sections each irregularly paginated as 9 pages. Includes 7 original drawings and paintings, in watercolor, gouache, and ink. Though unsigned, the art demonstrates considerable skill. Some are abstract, some figurative. Two are on red paper, one on gray. The remainder of the work is largely on a cream Crane's laid stock. Though Crane's is based in the US, their cotton-based rag has long been popular in the UK and Europe. There are no identifying marks in the work, and in fact Mansfield's name itself does not appear. A delightful puzzle. We estimate the date to be ca. 1945 to 1955.

U.S. Navy. ++Rare Announcement on the Formal Surrender of Japan, August 28, 1945++ Japanese to Sign Surrender Aboard USS Missouri Mightiest Ship in the United States Fleet, this being a press release from the U.S. Navy Department, dated August 28, 1945. 11x8.5", 2 leavers, stapled. Provenance: Miss Estelle and Miss Helene Philibert (Alexandria, Virginia), who evidently worked for the Navy Department 1940's-1960's, and who were in particular biographers of Samuel Eliot Morrison and John Paul Jones). Very good condition. Although I can find numerous copies in WorldCat/OCLC, I haven't been able (over time) to find a copy of this release for sale. Very good condition. +++ This press release comes at the very end of World war II--the end in Europe, (VE Day) was May 8, 1945, while the Armistice with Japan--the governing powers finally seeing the clear end after two atomic bombs six days later, on August 14 , while the formal signing of the declaration and instrument of surrender occurred on September 2. This release was issued from the Missouri five days earlier. The Missouri was just 14 months old at this point, and had in that time already seen action at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. It was the newest of the Iowa-class ships, and was certainly enormous (887') and powerful, and a fitting stage for the signing ceremony. After years of war, the proceedings took all of 23 minutes.

V e r t r a u l i c h ! sehr selten! - Vertrauliches Originaldokument. [Click Below for Full Description]

Wichita Falls, Texas: Raley Portraits, 1945. Fine. Portrait photograph of an African-American aviator. Measuring 3" x 5" gelatin silver print. Fine in about fine card frame and name of "Raley Portraits" on both mount and verso of the image. The unidentified aviator is pictured wearing a leather helmet and goggles, white scarf, and leather flight jacket. The patch on the jacket indicates that he served with the Army Airways Communications System (AACS) which began in 1943. While the patch is missing the white border that indicates post-WWII service, we cannot confirm the exact date of the photo. The aviator is unidentified, but with presumably a relatively small number of African-American pilots thus employed, further identification might require only some modest research.

Amt für Kommunalpolitik des Traditiongaues München-Oberbayern, Gauamtsleiter Sudholt
(noch zu Nr.12296:) . . . Following the assassination (during which he was riding in the following car), Powers remained in the White House until January 1965 when he resigned to assume the post of curator for the planned John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, a position he maintained until 1994. Most of the material in this collection – including reading copies and manuscript drafts – has never been published. Together with related notes and other mementoes kept by Powers, these speeches are among the largest cache of original JFK documents remaining in priva … [Click Below for Full Description]
