Various authors.
Ljubljana: Mladinska knjiga, September -June 1946. Small 4ø, 10 numbers in 9 volumes, 194 pp., [1], with colour illustrated covers and colour full page illustrations and colour illustrations within text, stapled, accompanied with original hard-cover pink binding with illustrated cover and linen back. (Very Good, magazines loose inside binding with broken binding, paper with light foxing, some leaves loose, white endpapers loose, tiny tears in margins, binding slightly rubbed and scuffed on the edges) The complete first year of highly influential Yugoslavian children?s pro-Communist and pro-Tito propaganda magazine, published in the first months after WWII in Slovenia, was richly illustrated by academic artists. This is the complete first year of the children?s magazine Ciciban, issued in 10 numbers in 9 volumes between September 1945 and June 1946, for the first year of school in Slovenian language after the end of WWII in May 1945. The magazines include stories, poems, riddles and plays for children, all richly illustrated with colourful images. The thematic of the articles and songs rotates mostly around war subjects and post-war problematic, such as young orphans, refugees, children, who were prisoners of war and who saw their houses being destroyed and their families murdered, children, who helped assassinating the Nazis etc. These somehow disturbing and sometimes extremely cruel articles are accompanied with colourful illustrations of the highest quality, made by the leading academic artists of the time, most of which worked in underground Partisan printing presses dur … [Click Below for Full Description]

[ALPHABET]. VOS, Herman A. (illustrator).
Leuven-Brussel; Copyright A.N.U.M. [1945]. Small 8vo. (120 x 165mm); original buff pictorial wrappers printed in colours, stapled to spine; pp. [28]; decorated introductory page followed by 26 coloured plates forming a Nazi alphabet with captions in Dutch, and the finale; a very pleasing copy with slight separation at upper staple (although secure) and some splitting to spine, a very unobtrusive diagonal crease to upper panel, some light soiling and spotting, and a few indentations to lower wrapper; internally very good throughout with some further indentations to first three leaves (although no punctures) and a minor production wrinkle to top edge of a few leaves; scarce and fragile. First edition, published in liberated Belgium at the end of the Second World War. The illustrator Vos was a political prisoner of the Nazi Regime. The volume is a satirical A-Z largely featuring Nazi leaders and their cronies during the German oppression of occupied Holland from 1940-1945 and depicts Hitler, Himmler, Goebbels and Goering, among others, with Churchill and Roosevelt as tank commanders and references to the Russians. A Jewish concentration camp prisoner is included under 'I' for Israelite.

Mussolini, Benito
No publisher no place 1945 Early edition. BookNear fine condition Two black & white photographs, measuring approximately 4.25 inches x 6.25 inches (105mm x 162mm), depicting the upside-down hanging corpse of Italian Fascist Dictator Benito Mussolini and others on April 29, 1945. A day earlier, Mussolini, his mistress Clara (Claretta) Petacci, her brother, and the dictator's 15 person entourage of ministers and officials of the Italian Social Republic were captured by partisans. They had been traveling with retreating German forces, with Mussolini apparently wearing a German military uniform. They were executed in Giulino di Mezzegra by shooting or firing squad and the bodies transported south of Milan and dumped at the old Piazzale Loreto, which was renamed Piazza Quindici Martiri. After the corpses were shot, kicked, and spat upon, the bodies were hung upside-down on meathooks from the roof of an Esso gas station. The bodies were then stoned by civilians. The site had previously been used for executions of partisans by Axis authories. One photographs shows a total of 7 hanging corpses, identified only by number. Numbers 4 and 5 are Mussolini and his mistress Petacci. Historical records identify number 3 as Achille Starace. A gas pump is clearly visible in the immediate background, as is the gas station. It is almost a straight on shot, maybe 15 degrees to the right, showing 50-60 spectators and a few men facing the crowd, apparently acting as security. There are no G.I.'s shown, although 4-5 men in leather jackets standing directly in front of the corpses may be aviators.T … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRODOVITCH, ALEXEY
New York: J.J. Augustin, 1945. FIRST EDITION, AN OUTSTANDING COPY IN THE SCARCE ORIGINAL SLIPCASE, of Brodovitch's masterpiece. "Although known primarily as a mentor and patron of photographers, due in large part to his position as art director and graphic designer at Harper's Bazaar, Alexey Brodovitch also made a legendary photobook of his own. Ballet, published in 1945 by J J Augustin in New York, has become a photobook legend for two reasons. Firstly, only a few hundred copies were printed, so the book is more talked about than actually seen. Secondly, the volume was extremely radical, both in terms of the images themselves and their incorporation into the design and layout..."The 104 pictures in Ballet had been taken by Brodovitch between 1935 and 1937. He photographed ballet companies visiting New York, including the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo, with whom he worked in Paris in the 1920s. Brodovitch shot the photographs with a 35 mm Contax camera, during both rehearsals and performances, by available light, hand-held, and using shutter speeds as slow as a fifth of a second or more. This resulted in blurred images of the moving dancers and in high-contrast, grainy negatives exhibiting burnt-out areas of flare from the stage lighting. These pictures totally violated the accepted conventions of good photographic technique, which demanded a sharp rendition of the subject and a wide, smooth tonal scale. Far from trying to mitigate these shortcomings, Brodovitch deliberately exaggerated them. He printed on high-contrast paper, bleached areas with the chemical ferricyanide … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vladimir Nabokov - VERY RARE UK FIRST EDITION
Poetry London Editions, 1945. A scarce fully jacketed Nabokov, much sought after. This is the Poetry London edition of his highly praised novel, and it is very scarce indeed in a complete jacket. The wartime production standards mean that the jackets were printed on the flimsiest paper, and they were mostly discarded. This jacket is now safely protected. It is not price clipped. It has a small tear on the top edge, but nothing is missing. There are a few chips, particularly at the base of the spine, and the ink has faded and the areas which were white are now tanned, but this is still a remarkable collectable. The book itself is also on wartime economy paper, but is an unmarked copy, without owner names or any defects. Very scarce indeed, and the best copy I have ever seen. Hammett, Dashiell
("DSH") in pencil on plain ruled paper, January 15, 1945, Fort Richardson, Alaska. 4to, 2 pages (recto only). Fine, fresh example. In September 1942 Hammett, at forty-eight, enlisted in the Army Signal Corps. He was stationed in the Aleutians, where he edited a paper and wrote the text of a pamphlet, The Battle of the Aleutians (1944). He was discharged in September 1945, nine months after the date of this letter. To Prudence Whitfield: (ex-wife of author Raoul Whitfield who was rumored to be Hammett’s lover for a time) "Pru darling- .There have been times when I took the war more seriously, but right now its more serious aspects aren't in the forefront of what I like to call my mind. Much love is in the fore-front, however.my thought for today is that uncertainty is a son of a bitch." Hammett met fellow Black Mask author Raoul Whitfield in the late 1920’s. When he moved to New York in 1930 they resumed their friendship and became drinking buddies (see William F. Nolan's "Hammett: A Life At The Edge" pages 106-107). This letter was written after Hammett's rise to literary fame, and at the height of his celebrity. Hammett (1894-1961), American writer; creator of "hard-boiled" school of detective fiction in novels "Red Harvest" (1929), "The Dain Curse" (1929), "The Maltese Falcon" (1930), "The Glass Key" (1931), "The Thin Man" (1932), etc..
