Quaker]
Chungking [privately published], 1945. First edition. Small 8vo (18 x 12.5 cm), pp.103, [1, blank]. A very good copy bound in Chinese-style stitched card wrappers. Wrappers lightly spotted. The China Convoy, organised by the Friends' (Society of) Ambulance Unit, brought together a large number of pacifists and conscientious objectors during the Second World War to supply medical aid to China, firstly over the Burma Road, and when that was closed, by air, over "the hump". Its members, men and women, were drawn from all over the world, Quaker and non-Quaker alike. This anthology brings together poems, songs, and a short play by members of the Unit. A complete list of members is appended, which identifies each member as British, American, Chinese, or Canadian. The volume is dedicated to Duncan Wood (1910-2006), a young man from a staunch Quaker family, who helped lead the China Convoy during the war. We locate copies at Oxford and Michigan only. GARDINER, J. Ritchie,
Calcutta [Private Typescript] 1945. Octavo. Original blue cloth, title gilt to front cover, marbled effect end papers. A little bumping to spine, a little damp to covers and end papers, text block unaffected. Remains a very good copy. 188 typescript leaves, privately produced by the author and inscribed "To Jack Graham as a small tribute to the work of the I[ndian] T[ea] A[ssociation] and to the many kindness extended to the author by him, from Ritchie. 10. 1/46." A scarce, privately produced account of a treacherous, life-threatening escape from Burma to India after the Japanese invasion, including a diary of events, along with a sizeable prologue and epilogue, written by a Scottish manager of of a timber company in Rangoon. Gardiner suggested in his text that Graham had played a part in the later rescue operation that would bring him to safety at the end of his trip. Two copies have been traced: one in Gardiner's personal papers at the British Library and one in SOAS' Burma Campaign Memorial Library. This carefully constructed and compellingly written account tells the story of one of the many small groups of British and Indians forced to flee Burma in 1942, a series of events that has been described as the "Dunkirk of the East" (Holly Williams, The Independent, 17 March 2012). Viscount Wavell said at the time that it was "a tale of human suffering, human endeavour and human endurance. No large scale migration of people can surely have taken place in worse conditions" (Forgotten Frontiers, Preface). Gardiner, who had considerable jungle experience, set out with a group of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Probably compiled by the pilot's mother, Millie Holm
Oregon and Germany, 1945. Album. Very good. This scrapbook measures 14" x 10" and contains over 400 b/w and faded color photographs and a newspaper clipping reporting Lieutenant Wayne L. Holm had been shot down in Germany. There are 15 variously-sized hand drawings; thirteen are pencil sketches and one appears to be done in oil-pastel or wax crayon. Everything is in nice shape. The photos are mounted with corners; the drawings are glued down. Most of the photos show Holms, his mother, two sisters, extended family, and friends. However, about 65 show him as a pilot in the military. One is a portrait image of Holmes wearing an undecorated flight jacket; fix or six show him during pilot training, about 30 show him at home in uniform, about ten show him on board a transport or in France, several show his squadron's base camp among destroyed buildings, and one shows him in the cockpit of his bubble-top P47D 28 Thunderbolt. However, the importance of this album lies in Holm's preliminary "nose art" designs for his aircraft. The 15 images are drawn on five separate sheets. All but one (a caricature of an American Indian brave) show nude women in provocative poses. Four are rather explicit and two of those, captioned "Open Wide," show the woman with somewhat phallic shaped bombs. One sheet contains several names Holmes considered for his plane: Lucy Lou, Lucy Loo, Lucy Loose, and Lu-Lu Lucille, and one, Lucky Luce, with a drawing that likely was Holm's final choice for his aircraft. Unfortunately, no photographs of the entire Thunderbird are in the album, so there is … [Click Below for Full Description]

Axs [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Henry Hitt
Bremerton Washington: Pre-owned. Please see photos and description. Please examine photos. They are THIS item and are part of the description. I do not use stock photos or photos of other people's items. Based on what I can find on-line this may be the finest known copy of this rare original 1945 Expanded 2nd Edition of Henry Hitt's unsurpassed reference on Chinese Snuff Bottles. Each book was hand made by Hitt. He did all of the illustrations and hand wrote all of the text. He also personally bound each accordion page copy in a variety of rice cloth covers. The cloth here is especially colorful. This copy also has the original spine, coming to pieces but intact, which other copies are missing. This is copy number 275, signed by Hitt and includes the original post paid card also signed by Hitt seeking correspondence with the purchaser. Also included is the first "Snuff Bottle Analecta". Uniquely, based on other copies on-line, this copy also includes the original light green card dust jacket. The endpapers have Hitt's green stamp logo. All plates are included though some have come unglued. Except for Hitt's signature, there are no extraneous marks or writing inside. I found only two prices for other original copies. In Freeman's 17 March 2012 Sale, Lot 83 sold for $1250 on a $400-600 estimate. That copy had a monochromatic cloth cover, no dust jacket, no supplement, no correspondence card. An unphotographed copy described as "Good", unnumbered, no supplement, no dust jacket, no correspondence card is currently offered at Back Creek Books for $300. GIRAUDOUX (Jean)
[ANON]
A wonderful photographic tribute to the people of Rotterdam. This leather-bound album contains over 140 original photographs of Rotterdam before, during, and after the German blitz bombing of the 14th May 1940. Full green leather with the crest of the city of Rotterdam to the front cover. A frontis photograph shows a memorial to the fallen of the blitz. This would seem to place this photograph in circa 1945 - but despite finding postcards and online images, this would seem to have been a temporary memorial pending a permanent one. <br />A title page, shows a ruined church - with the title 'Een oorlog trok over Rotterdam 10-14 Mei 1940.' (all titles and ornamentation has been done with a dark graphite pencil). There are then several large photographs of the docks before the war. The last of these is a beautiful shot of the bridge with the imposing Witte building across the Maas. The following large photograph shows the Witte building standing amidst the smoke and flames, whilst the buildings around it are consumed by fire. A further 15 smaller photographs show smoke and burning buildings throughout the city. Three fascinating photographs follow. The first shows the SS Statendam before the war - following by the flagship ablaze, and finally as a burnt out hulk. The Statendam had the misfortune to be docked in the port when the Germans invaded. They occupied it and set up guns upon it during the invasion, and during a firefight with the Dutch army, it caught fire and was destroyed. <br />The rest of the photographs show buildings, streets and churches before and after the bli … [Click Below for Full Description]

The archive consists of hundreds of vernacular photographs of her, her life in the Red Cross and her life in India. There are also numerous papers related to her life overseas, letters from the 1940s, and a few family papers, including: - Hundreds of photographs, primarily black and white, with some negative and of various sizes. Some housed in a photograph album with an Egyptian motif on the front, and the rest are generally loose, although a few envelopes contain images and are labeled, such as "Maharajah's Palace." A sizeable percentage of the photographs are marked on the verso, such as an image of buildings and a tennis court with the notation "Tennis Courts & Squash! Where 'Peach' & John lived Oh! Lorca; Nikos Gatsos
Athens: García Lorca, Federico, and Nikos Gatsos. Ho matōmenos gamos. [Introduction and Translation from the Spanish by ...] Athēna: Ikaros, 1945. The inexpensive paper used in this rare publication printed at the height of the Greek Civil War is uniformly tanned, otherwise this copy is about fine. Gatsos's translation into Greek of Bodas de Sangre had an equivalent impact on contemporary Greek culture as Seferis's translation of The Wasteland in the 1930s. The production at Karolos Koun's Art Theatre brought together the actors, composers and set designers who later defined the modern Greek idiom. Now quite rare. Originally catalogued at €1250. Retiring from the book business after more than 45 years; prices drastically reduced; all items sold as is; no returns. Contact us at with any questions regarding condition, shipping or payment.

WEEGEE pseud. Arthur Felig
New York: Essential Books, 1945. Condition: Near fine. 8vo. Contemporary three-quarter leather over blue cloth, with the Ingersoll family's gilt insignia to front ("Fama Sed Virtus Non Moriatur" - Fame, but not virue, will die). Near fine. Original photographic endpapers preserved and laid down. Original dust jacket tipped in, reading "Second Large Printing" on front flap. Pages mildly toned throughout, but clean throughout and surprisingly fresh. Binding tight. 246pp. A fascinating association copy of Weegee's masterpiece, ex-libris Ralph Ingersoll, founder of the leftist newspaper PM, where Weegee worked as a staff photographer. Ingersol's PM was famous for refusing advertising (a fact that unsurprisingly contributed to its demise), and in addition to Weegee helped support several other important photographers inlcuding Helen Levitt, Morris Engel, and Margaret Bourke-White. Many of the images included in this classic photobook of "death, disaster and sleaze" (Parr and Badger, 145) were taken by Weegee for PM. A handsome edition of this timeless documentary photobook, in a bespoke binding from the library of one of the people instrumental in its creation.

Raymond Chandler
Hollywood: Paramount Pictures. Condition: Very Good condition, with a small bit of tearing at one of the staples and curl to a couple of corners. Post-production Release Dialogue Script for the 1946 film. The only script associated with the legendary noir that we have ever seen, and presumably the earliest continuity, dated 7 months prior to the film's release. "The Blue Dahlia" got off to a shaky start, as Raymond Chandler could not finish the screenplay on schedule, and was finally under the gun from Paramount to turn in a script with only 2 weeks to go. Chandler reportedly began a non-stop diet of alcohol and glucose injections, ultimately meeting the deadline and turning in his only original screen story, a hard-boiled gem that was the equal of any of his novels. A recognized gem as well: Chandler received an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay. Alan Ladd played the Chandler anti-hero to perfection, opposite Veronica Lake during a period when she could basically do no wrong. Tall white studio self-wrappers, dated September 21, 1945, with the sole screenwriting credit for Chandler on the first page. 66 leaves, mimeograph, side-stitched. In a custom clamshell box, with matching folding chemise.
