Orwell, George
London Secker and Warburg 1945. A first edition, first printing published by Secker and Warburg in 1945. A very fine book with one previous owner's gift inscription to the front pastedown. An exceptional example. In a near fine (or better) dust wrapper, the only minus being a minute chip to the top of the rear panel. Some light rubbing to the edges. Titles are exceptionally strong with none of the usual creasing or chipping. The best we have seen in many years. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

I regard this book as one of the most important photography books of the 20th century. Gritty and truthful in its' depiction of New York City during a time and place. Henry Hitt
Bremerton Washington: Pre-owned. Please see photos and description. Please examine photos. They are THIS item and are part of the description. I do not use stock photos or photos of other people's items. Based on what I can find on-line this may be the finest known copy of this rare original 1945 Expanded 2nd Edition of Henry Hitt's unsurpassed reference on Chinese Snuff Bottles. Each book was hand made by Hitt. He did all of the illustrations and hand wrote all of the text. He also personally bound each accordion page copy in a variety of rice cloth covers. The cloth here is especially colorful. This copy also has the original spine, coming to pieces but intact, which other copies are missing. This is copy number 275, signed by Hitt and includes the original post paid card also signed by Hitt seeking correspondence with the purchaser. Also included is the first "Snuff Bottle Analecta". Uniquely, based on other copies on-line, this copy also includes the original light green card dust jacket. The endpapers have Hitt's green stamp logo. All plates are included though some have come unglued. Except for Hitt's signature, there are no extraneous marks or writing inside. I found only two prices for other original copies. In Freeman's 17 March 2012 Sale, Lot 83 sold for $1250 on a $400-600 estimate. That copy had a monochromatic cloth cover, no dust jacket, no supplement, no correspondence card. An unphotographed copy described as "Good", unnumbered, no supplement, no dust jacket, no correspondence card is currently offered at Back Creek Books for $300.
[Click Below for Full Description]

INDIAN NATIONAL ARMY.) SAHGAR, Lakshmi & SETH, Amritlal.
Bombay: Janmabhoomi Prakashan Mandir, 1945. Ocatvo. Original publisher's boards, title and INA device in black to front cover. With the dust jacket. Housed in tricolour cloth solander box, the colours of the INA flag with spinning wheel device in blue, INA gilt to spine. Boards a little rubbed and foxed, text block mildly toned. A very good copy in a very good dust jacket, with a little rubbing and very light chipping. 11 doubled sided plates with half-tone photographs. First edition, scarce with only 3 locations in Copac (Oxford, Sussex and Cardiff; BL has a second printing). A fascinating and melodramatic text, now considered to be the fictionalised journal of a female Indian soldier fighting for the anti-British, Indian National Army during World War Two written by Captain Lakshmi (Sahgal), leader of the army's Rani of Jhansi Regiment, "the first all-female infantry fighting unit in military history" (Hildebrand). Named after the warrior Queen of Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, who had fought the British in 1857, this unit was formed by Subhas Chandra Bose, leader of Azad Hind (Free India) state, based in Singapore from 1943 to 1945, in order to promote the full participation of women in the Indian Independence movement. The author stresses the willingness of Indian women to sacrifice their lives to bring about the creation of an free India. "It is the snobbishness of the orthodox male that makes him take this supercilious attitude to us, women soldiers. Just give us a little time, and we shall prove to you that we can make really tough soldiers. You shall know that the timid wif … [Click Below for Full Description]

The participants worked in a circle on the floor of her art gallery . . . 'cutting and folding sheets of cardboard, punching holes, assembling the components, and binding them with lengths of red ribbon'" (Hamalian, 145). Later in 1945, Crosby packed Lazzari's original drawings in a Schiaparelli hatbox, along with watercolors by Romare Bearden, and flew overseas on a military transport to mount one of the first postwar exhibitions of American art in Paris. Lorca; Nikos Gatsos
Athens: García Lorca, Federico, and Nikos Gatsos. Ho matōmenos gamos. [Introduction and Translation from the Spanish by ...] Athēna: Ikaros, 1945. The inexpensive paper used in this rare publication printed at the height of the Greek Civil War is uniformly tanned, otherwise this copy is about fine. Gatsos's translation into Greek of Bodas de Sangre had an equivalent impact on contemporary Greek culture as Seferis's translation of The Wasteland in the 1930s. The production at Karolos Koun's Art Theatre brought together the actors, composers and set designers who later defined the modern Greek idiom. Now quite rare. Originally catalogued at €1250. Retiring from the book business after more than 45 years; prices drastically reduced; all items sold as is; no returns. Contact us at with any questions regarding condition, shipping or payment.

[World War II Photographica]. [Women]. [India]
Margherita and Ledo, India, 1945. Very good.. 156 original photographs, most 3.5 x 5 inches. Green cloth album, string tied, with hand painted front board. Light wear to boards. Photos in corner mounts, most captioned on album leaves, a few loose and laid in. A photo album created by a member of the Army Nurse Corps who probably served with the 20th General Hospital in Margherita and was certainly in Ledo. A contingent of Army Nurse Corps nurses were sent to this region in the China-Burma-India Theater to provide medical support to those who were there to build the Ledo Road-an essential supply line into China. Several captions reference the 20th General Hospital which was located in Margherita and was overseen by faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and staffed with nurses from Philadelphia area hospitals. The anonymous photographer, pictured several times in the album, was quite talented, as evidenced by many outstanding shots of the setting and of locals living around Ledo and Margherita as well as street scenes in Karachi, Calcutta and elsewhere in India. The album also includes posed shots of nurses and other military, pictures depicting their living areas and others show nurses posing with locals. There are several great pictures along the Irrawaddy River and a small number show the women nurses as a group in a truck convoy as they began the journey home. There are also a few images of bomb damage and the American military cemetery. An excellent document of American women's experience in an oft overlooked theater of World War II.
