Lecture: The Negro in the Post-War World

Howard University, [Washington DC] 1945 - Quarto. Three mimeograph sheets side-stapled, printed rectos only. Very good with old folds, wear at the edges, and a couple small stains. Original program for a lecture given by Alain L. Locke, a professor of philosophy at Howard University on February 20, 1945, titled "The American Negro Status Seen as a Minority Problem." The lecture was based on his pioneering social science anthology When Peoples Meet: A Study of Race and Culture Contacts, co-written with Bernhard Stern, which promoted their theory of cultural pluralism and examined dominant and minority in various countries around the world. The program provides an outline of the lecture, broken down into five parts, and with two holograph notations from a student. OCLC locates no copies.

Returned mail sent to a World War II Marine who was captured on Corregidor and died in a Japanese prison camp

1945. Very good. Envelope only, no letter. The envelope was addressed to Private First Class Walter Mikucki at the Osaka Yodogawa Bunsho POW Camp in Japan. It has a typed "Prisoner of War Postage Free" free frank in the upper right corner and has received a Chicago "War Savings machine postmark dated Jan 13, 1944. The envelope was opened by a U.S. censor and resealed using censor tape annotated, "Examined by 6587." The address was subsequently obliterated with a red cross and black bands using grease pencil or crayon. It has a circular handstamp in the lower right corner dated Nov 20 1945 with text that appears to read "[LIBER]ATED HQ. USMC., WASH., D.C." Ther is a USMC "pointing finger" return-to-sender hand stamp that point to the return address. Pfc. Mikucki was a member of the 4th Marine Regiment when, as war clouds rumbled in the Pacific, it was sent from China to Corregidor to defend Manila Bay in the Philippines. Shortly after its arrival, Japan launched its sneak attack on Pearl Harbor and allied bases throughout the Pacific. Corregidor was bombed continuously from late December, 1941 until May 5, 1942 when an overwhelming force of Japanese soldiers landed on the island. After tanks were brought ashore the following day, Lt. Gen. Johathan Wainwright realized defeat was imminent and surrendered fearing the thousand or so wounded men and bedraggled defenders would be annihated. Although most of the 4th Marine Regiment had been killed, the remaining men were transported to prison camps in Japan. The Yodogawa Bunsho Camp near Osaka was one of the smallest Japanes prisoner of war camps, and records in the National Archives identify only 12 prisoners that were known to have been held there. Pfc. Mikucki's name is not on that list. Other records show that Mikucki may have been imprisoned at various times at the Itchioke, Chikko, and Umeda Bunsho camps. He died from unknown causes on March 11, 1943. Clearly this information was not provided by the Japanese to the Red Cross as Mikucki's parents sent this letter ten months later. Examples of mail sent to American prisoners held in Japan are very scarce, and this example may be unique for as os 2017, I am unable to find any record of other returned mail for Corregidor Marines who died in Japanese prisoner of war camps in philatelic or ephemera auctions records, for sale in the trade, or held by institutions per OCLC. Also, there is no mention of anything similar in Gruenzner's Postal History of pf American POWs.

        Miscellaneous Aviation Medical Matters

1945 - CIOS August 1945. Intelligence report XXIX-21. A substantial report on German wartime research, often unethical, into general aviation medical matters and on the patho-physiological aspects of prolonged exposure to cold resulting from aircrew baling out at high altitude or landing in water. CIOS 'Black List of targets for urgent investigation' category: Medical. 163 pages, numerous German wartime photographs/illustrations, 14 preliminary pages in English followed by about 150 pages of German "Geheim" (secret) reports dating from 1942 to 1944. Very good in original stapled card wrappers. This large scale study of German wartime research on various risks attached to high-level flight and cold is notorious for containing details of human experimentation on inmates at Dachau concentration camp by Doctors Rascher and Romburg. This 1945 CIOS report for the first time put the German wartime secret reports and illustrations in aviation-related medical research into the public domain - this evidence was later used at the "Doctors' Trial" at Nuremberg in December 1946. A true rarity. The Wiener Library in London, one of the world's leading archives on the Holocaust, holds a copy of this report; with one more example in London and two in Germany. No copy is noted as being held by any US library (unlikely, of course). A modern 4-page historical information leaflet on CIOS/BIOS wartime intelligence reports is provided with purchase. ** Search ABE keywords for WARQREP for more WW2 CIOS/BIOS intelligence reports.       New York: J. J. Augustin, 1945. First edition. Oblong hardcover. Reportedly only 500 copies were printed. Text by Edwin Denby. This book was a revelation with it's design and gritty and grainy collection of images of the Ballet Russe. Includes 104 black and white photographs printed in gravure. A close to near fine copy with some creasing to the front free endpaper in an about very good dust jacket that has a small hole and some soiling on the rear panel, some minor wear to the edges, some toning to the front and rear panels and the plain unprinted spine having perished. Still, a very nice copy of this classic. Brodovitch's importance and impact on photography and graphic design can't be overestimated. (Parr & Badger v1, 240-241, Roth 110-111)

        [Photograph]: African-American Aviator. Circa 1945

Wichita Falls, Texas: Raley Portraits, 1945. Fine. Portrait photograph of an African-American aviator. Measuring 3" x 5" gelatin silver print. Fine in about fine card frame and name of "Raley Portraits" on both mount and verso of the image. The unidentified aviator is pictured wearing a leather helmet and goggles, white scarf, and leather flight jacket. The patch on the jacket indicates that he served with the Army Airways Communications System (AACS) which began in 1943. While the patch is missing the white border that indicates post-WWII service, we cannot confirm the exact date of the photo. The aviator is unidentified, but with presumably a relatively small number of African-American pilots thus employed, further identification might require only some modest research.

Herrenhäuser in Brandenburg und der Niederlausitz. 2 Bände. Leinen im Schuber [Gebundene Ausgabe] Peter-Michael Hahn (Autor), Hellmut Lorenz (Autor) Brandenburg Mark Kunst Architektur Schlösser Bauten Provinz Baukunst Adelskultur preußischer Staat

Nicolai. Brandenburg Mark Kunst Architektur Schlösser Bauten Provinz Baukunst Adelskultur preußischer Staat Das Werk "Herrenhäuser in Brandenburg und der Niederlausitz" ist eine kommentierte Neuausgabe eines Ansichtswerkes über Schlösser und Herrenhäuser aus der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. [Gebundene Ausgabe] Peter-Michael Hahn (Autor), Hellmut Lorenz

[Guam 1945 - Quarto. Blue spiral bound album with self-adhesive pages containing approximately 60 black and white photographs. Overall near fine with the photographs neatly arranged in a like new album with only the poster board showing light wear and a touch of toning at the edges. A collection of images taken by Army photographer William S. Dolan from Riverhead, Long Island. Dolan enlisted in the Army in 1942 but failed his physical for being underweight resulting in his assignment to the Army Air Force Western Technical Training Command at Lowry Field in Colorado where he graduated in 1943. He continued to serve stateside until 1945 when he requested a transfer to the infantry eventually being stationed in Guam with the 315th Wing Consolidated Photographic Laboratory. The album starts with about a dozen 7.5" x 9" photos with individual shots of men from his unit, including Dolan, followed by several official-looking photos of the lab, men processing film, and making prints, along with a mimeograph history of the unit. The remainder of the album showcases images of Dolan posing with his gun, on the beach, talking with the other soldiers, one captioned "The Teetotalers" shows a group of men with beers, as well as shots of the island, palm trees, the harbor, a church, a farmer plowing, and native houses. The albums ends with a series of images of Dolan and other men boarding a plane and two curious images of what appears to be indigenous men of New Guinea. [With] Stiff poster board, measuring 20" x 15", hand lettered with "Guam" at the top with a palm tree and cut-outs displaying six photos. The poster board features the most artful of Dolan's shots of Guam with palm trees, the beach, and native homes. A compelling album of images from one Army photographer's time on the island of Gaum.       Small 8°, 102 pp. printed text in Latin and Cyrillic stript with photoreproductions and copies of documents, [1] index, original wrappers printed in red and black, with a photoreproduction on the cover (Very Good, small folds in edges, title page with a stamp with name of Vladimir Dedijer). - Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina: Sloboda, April 8, 1945. A rare underground printing by Bosnian Partisans against Chetniks, lead by Draza Mihailovic, was made in Mostar in April 1945, one month before the liberation of Yugoslavia. From the library of Vladimir Dedijer. - This extremely rare booklet was printed in Latin and Cyrillic by the underground printing press of the Bosnian National Liberation Army (Partisans), after their liberation of Mostar in Bosnia, in the last month of war in Yugoslavia. It gives the first hand reports and reproductions of the documents against the royalist army of Chetniks, lead by Draža Mihailovi? The Partisans took Mostar without resistance on February 14, 1945, after sieging Ustashe and Chetink strongholds a week before. Upon entering the city, the Partisans took a severe revenge on collaborating Christian monks from the Church of Saint Peter and Paul. This is the third and best edition of the publication. The first two, published from February 20, 1945, on were published in Cyrillic script and mimeographed. This edition was printed in 5000 examples according to the text on the last page. The title page bears a red stamp with a name of Vladimir Dedijer (1914 - 1990). Dedijer was a Partisan fighter and subsequently one of the most internationally prominent Yugoslavian historians and civil rights activists. He initially worked as a journalist, and this led him to travel to Spain where he supported the Republicans during that county’s Civil War. In 1941, he joined the Partisans where he attained the rank of lieutenant-colonel, becoming a close advisor to Marshall Tito. After the war he taught at the University of Belgrade and was appointed to the Central Committee of the Yugoslav Communist Party, but, in 1954, following a contretemps with Tito, was banished from all power circles. He left Yugoslavia in 1959, where he spent the rest of his life teaching and writing, associated with some of the world’s leading universities, such as Princeton, Stanford, Harvard and the Sorbonne. He became an internationally prominent human rights activist and an important historian of World War II and its aftermath. Bibliografija from 1964 mentions ony one example of the book in Yugoslavian libraries. Today we could not trace any examples in libraries worldwide. References: Bibliografija, no. 7626. (mistakenly quotes Aprl 4 as a date of publication).

Kurt Gerstein.
