Praha (Prague). 1945. Paperback. Original paper wrappers with colorful illustrated dust jacket, 8vo, 83 pages, plus 12 plates of facsimiles and photos of survivors taken by Burger just after liberation, (including one photo of former Sonderkommandos) . Original 1945 edition Adolf Burger’s memoirs about his journeys through the Nazi concentration camps and his work in the counterfeiting workshop in Oranienburg, narrated by Sylva and Oskar Krejci. His memoirs are the basis for the film, “The Counterfieters, ” which won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. “Adolf Burger…took up a job in a printing house in Bratislava in 1938…he became one of those who received government-sponsored waivers from deportations as someone with skills indispensable for the country's economy. At the request of resistance members, Burger began to print false baptismal certificates for Jews scheduled for deportation, which stated that they had been Roman Catholic from birth, or baptized so before World War II. Slovaks with such documents were not deported. Burger's activity was discovered. He was … deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp…After eighteen months at Auschwitz-Birkenau, Burger's training came through for him once more. He was selected for Operation Bernhard, transferred to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in April 1944, and eventually to the Ebensee site of the Mauthausen camp network where he was liberated by the US Army on 6 May 1945 (Wikipedia, 2016) . The covers use a montage design of US currency, British documents, and Burger’s concentration camp insignia. SUBJECT(S) : WWII, Resistance, Concentration Camps. Minimal pencil markings that do not affect text. Some tears to jacket at folds, Minimal stains and slight toning. Very good condition. Dramatic and attractive. (HOLO2-134-63A) .

Emblemes (a k a Emblems) + Hieroglyphikes of the Life of Man

Beautiful little English Emblem book with 100+ religious, alchemical and symbolic illustrations/engravings in two parts + a letter dated 1945 from Library of Harvard University, The Houghton Library, signed by William A. Jackson (1905-1964), the first librarian for The Houghton Library .Emblemes (a.k.a. emblems) by Fra. Quarles (Francis Quarles) + Hieroglyphikes of the Life of Man London printed for J. Williams at the Crowne in St. Paul's Churchyard 1684 (although the date looks like it could be read either as 1624 or 1634)Size, Binding and Collation: Cute little 12mo volume measuring 6.5"x4" 381 pages + preliminaries, in later, probably early-to-mid 20th century calf. Collation is as follows: blank, title page, Dedication to Edward Benlowes, To the Reader, a latin inscription, first engraving, and main text begins The First Book begining with The Invocation (1-64), The Second Book (65-124), The Third Book (125-188), The Fourth Book (189-248), The Fifth Book (249-311), book plate of The Library of J. Roy W. Barrette (probably 20th century) on past down, two blank pages, "the mind of the frontispiece", "Hieroglyphikes of the Life of Man" title page on page 317, Dedication to Lady Mary Countess of Dorset (319-20), To the Reader (321), first engraving of the Hieroglyphikes on page 322, main text alternating engravings and text 322-381, Finis.Condition: Near Fine pages in Near Fine binding, and very good+ title page. Beautiful solid binding, slight edge-wear to the edges of the boards, but overall clean and solid, text very readable, engravings mostly clear but probably towards the end of the printing run. Slight toning towards the edges of the main title page with a taped repair to the top, not affecting inner engraving, mostly clean pages, near fine, with occasional spotting, nothing serious. Overall a very good solid book from the late 17th century!Included Letter: Interestingly, this volume was apparently at first purchased or acquired then passed on and returned to Miss Mabel Zahn and Charles Sessler by Harvard University's Houghton Library as shown in a letter in the volume written and signed by William A. Jackson who was the first librarian of Houghton Library at Harvard, appointed in 1942 and remained at the post until his death in 1964. According to the letter, the seller or donor (it's not clear whether this was a donation or a sale, to Harvard but I suspect this was a sale) had dated the volume to 1634 but Jackson felt positive the book was printed in 1684 although the engraved title page's year is difficult to read. Jackson speaking for Houghton declined the book and another book, which makes me believe these were a possible transactions from an antiquarian bookseller. So this book has "partial provenance", briefly owned by Harvard University then not!NOTE: The pictures are of the actual item for sale. (The pictures are NOT a stock photo.)

        This Hunger.

New York: Gemor Press,, 1945. With five woodblocks by Ian Hugo. Octavo. Original cream paper-covered boards, titles to spine and front cover in purple, illustrations to covers in purple, edges untrimmed. With 5 woodblock prints. Slight bumps to spine ends, a couple small faint marks to covers; an excellent copy. First and limited edition, one of 1,050 copies. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Leo, of the hooded insights .. who reads the unwritten books. With love, Anaïs". The recipient was likely Leo Lerman, editor of Harper's Bazaar at the time, and friend of Nin's, with whom she often had "whimsical and completely free talks". In 1946 Nin respectfully turned down Lerman's request for a short autobiography to use in a profile feature, writing, "I am more interested in human beings than in writing, more interested in lovemaking than in writing, more interested in living than in writing ... I walk into the fire always, and come out more alive. All of which is not for Harper's Bazaar". The illustrator was one of Nin's two husbands, Hugh Parker Guiler; they were married from 1923 until her death in 1977.

        Mandragora, siglo XX

[Attributes: Soft Cover]

[Guam. 1945]. Quarto. Blue spiral bound album with self-adhesive pages containing approximately 60 black and white photographs. Overall near fine with the photographs neatly arranged in a like new album with only the poster board showing light wear and a touch of toning at the edges. A collection of images taken by Army photographer William S. Dolan from Riverhead, Long Island. Dolan enlisted in the Army in 1942 but failed his physical for being underweight resulting in his assignment to the Army Air Force Western Technical Training Command at Lowry Field in Colorado where he graduated in 1943. He continued to serve stateside until 1945 when he requested a transfer to the infantry eventually being stationed in Guam with the 315th Wing Consolidated Photographic Laboratory. The album starts with about a dozen 7.5" x 9" photos with individual shots of men from his unit, including Dolan, followed by several official-looking photos of the lab, men processing film, and making prints, along with a mimeograph history of the unit. The remainder of the album showcases images of Dolan posing with his gun, on the beach, talking with the other soldiers, one captioned "The Teetotalers" shows a group of men with beers, as well as shots of the island, palm trees, the harbor, a church, a farmer plowing, and native houses. The albums ends with a series of images of Dolan and other men boarding a plane and two curious images of what appears to be indigenous men of New Guinea. [With] Stiff poster board, measuring 20" x 15", hand lettered with "Guam" at the top with a palm tree and cut-outs displaying six photos. The poster board features the most artful of Dolan's shots of Guam with palm trees, the beach, and native homes. A compelling album of images from one Army photographer's time on the island of Gaum. .
