        China Proper.

[Various printers for H.M. Stationery Office], July 1944 - [vol. III July 1945]. 8vo, three volumes. Original green cloth, spines and front covers lettered in gilt; pp. xvi, 542; vii, 370; xiv, 653, highly illustrated with plates, maps (one large and folding, in rear pocket) and plans, spines faded, cloth a little marked, internally good; from Edmonton Public Libraries with according shelfmarks, library book plates and stamps (but never lent out). First edition, a very rarely seen complete set. B. R. 530, 530 and B (Restricted). Geographical Handbook Series. - Probably one of the best-researched set of books on China during the turbulent period, covering all aspects of the vast country under occupation, with revolutionary movements thriving, civil war and uncertainty of the future. Volume I contains information about physical geography, history and peoples, followed by chapters on modern history and administration in the second volume. Economic geography, ports and communications are illustrated and described in the concluding volume. 'A series of intelligence handbooks produced during the First World War had proved valuable both during the conflict and as subsequent reference sources. Early in the Second World War the Director of Naval Intelligence ordered the preparation of a new and improved series to meet the requirements of the day. The Handbooks were designed to provide, in the words of the Preface, "for the use of Commanding Officers, information in a comprehensive and convenient form about countries which they may be called upon to visit, not only in war but in peace-time; secondly, to maintain the high standard of education in the Navy and, by supplying officers with material for lectures ... to ensure for all ranks that visits to a new country shall be both interesting and profitable"' (Cambridge Archive Editions, who reproduce a few titles of the series, online). The series was edited by Kenneth Mason (1887-1976), a geographer-soldier, mountaineer and the first statutory professor of geography at Oxford University. Inspired by Younghusband's Heart of a Continent as a child, he conducted intense surveys of the Himalayas and was awarded an RGS medal in 1927 for his surveys of India and Russian Turkestan as well for his leadership of the Shakshagam Expedition. 'Mason also revitalized the links between geography at Oxford and practical service. These had begun with the RGS's involvement in the establishment of the discipline at Oxford and were fostered by Halford Mackinder and particularly his successor, A. J. Herbertson. Under Mason, with his extensive contacts in the military services, government, the city, and the RGS, the school consolidated its practical focus, linked to regional planning, surveying, exploration, teaching, and colonial service. A notable product was the Admiralty handbooks produced during the war when the school became an intelligence unit' (ODNB). China Proper seems to be amongst the rarest Naval Intelligence Division Georgraphical Handbooks of the Second World War.

        [Notebook of poetry]

Unpublished; Handwritten by the Author, 1945. The only copy in existence. Hardcover. VG- (Content clean and tight but with age toning to leaves. Covers rubbed; wearing at outer edges.). Outer Physical Description: Red leatherette covers with a Merkbuch notebook, originally blank, with grid graph paper, inserted into slit in back cover. Notebook is removable, to be replaced with another in the red folio cover. Includes slant pocket inside front cover and upper/lower flaps inside back cover, both for placing receipts, photos, and extraneous pieces of paper. The gilt front lettering is, "Erste osterreichische SPAR-CASSE, WIEN," the oldest savings bank in Austria, founded in 1819. The book measures 16x21 cm and 1 cm in thickness. Internal Physical Description: Inscription page followed by a mix of 33 pp. with writing on only one side, 10 with writing on both sides, and the remaining 15 pages blank until the end of the book. Two pages have been torn out and are not present. Two small pieces of other paper, one hand-written, one typed, are laid in. Content Description - all content is handwritten, presumably by Neris: The front free end paper contains the writing, "Wien 23.11.44, A. Civilyte," although the A could possibly be an F. This notebook was in the personal book collection of American artist Will Barnet and his wife, Elena Civilte Barnet, who was Lithuanian. The book could have belonged to a family member, or it could have been given directly to Elena by Neris. An inscriptionon on the following page is in Lithuanian and appears to be a short poem. The handwriting makes it somewhat difficult to differentiate among the letters m/i/u/n/ and f/p/h/k, etc. It reads, as far as I can guess, as: "Musu dienos-kaip švent kaip žyd jimas vypuios! / Tad skub kim gyventi, nes praeis, nebegri jos! - S. Neris 1945. Geguzes 5d. Wittenwater," which translates loosely as "Our days - how the feast is like flowering! / So let's rush to live, because it's gone, do not stop it! - S. Neris, 1945. May 5th. Wittenwater." (Neris died two months later, in July in Moscow.) The notebook contains other poetry by Neris and by another Lithuanian poet, Henrikas Nagy, as well as some poetry and prose by Rilke, Nietzsche, Neris, and Akhmatova. The works of Rilke and Nietzsche are written in German; the poem by Akhamatova is written in Russian (Cyrillic); and all poems by Neris and Nagy are in Lithuanian. Two of Neris's other poems are Gyvenimas giesme (A Song of Life) and Tokios Tolimos (So Far Away). Some of the pages look as if there is narrative written below the poetry. I am surmising that these may be Neris's comments or critiques of the works. Description of the separate two pieces of paper laid in: One is a half piece of lined tablet paper. On it is a poem, Chanson d'Automne, by P. Verlaine, written in French by hand (probably Neris's), in ink, with a free-hand sketch of a woman and two flowers. The other piece is a half sheet of plain paper, typed, with a hand-written note in the margin, dated 1946. The text of both the poem and the note is in Lithuanian, and the poem it titled, "Lietuvaitei" (For Lithuanians) The poem is dated "Stutthofo Koncentracijos lageris, 1943. VIII. 26 diena," meaning it originally was written August 26, 1943 in the Stutthof Concentration Camp. I cannot find information about Neris in the Stutthof camp, but the Lithuanian poet, Balys Sruoga, was, and his dates correspond with Neris's, so the poem could be his. Family of Neris: Neris married Bernardas Bucas, a sculptor. She had a son, Saul Bucas, who died in 2004. Saul was married to Laima Bucas. Supposedly, Neris had/has 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Her granddaughter, Salome Buca, attended an event on July 7, 2015 honoring the 100th anniversary of Neris's death, held at the Salomeja Neris Museum in Kaunas. Final Note: The initial inscription/poem seems quite poignant (something about passing and not returning...). If this is, indeed what it seems, this could well be one of the last handwritten compendiums by Neris with her own poetry and examples of her favorite poetry by other writers. There is a little flower tucked between two pages of the book. Unique. No other in existence.

Notorious (Original screenplay for the 1946 film)

Los Angeles: RKO Radio Pictures, 1945. Temporary screenplay for the 1946 film. At 162 pages (the equivalent of nearly 3 hours' running time), this script is much longer than the final edited version, and like many Selznick scripts in the draft stage, is not quite complete (though the camera direction is already quite detailed), ending with the line "Alex, are you mad?" as called for. One of the great Hitchcock films, and one of a handful he made that ventured into more serious dramatic content outside the thriller genre. Though not credited as a screenwriter in the final film, Hitchcock and Hecht holed themselves up in a room in New York City for days developing the inital screenplay draft, this being the immediate result. Nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay. Pale blue titled wrappers, noted as Temporary Screenplay on the front wrapper, dated June 11, 1945, with credits for director Hitchcock and screenwriter Hecht. Distribution page present, with receipt intact, rubber stamped Script No. 2578. 162 leaves, mimeograph, with white revision pages dated 6/12/45. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Near Fine bound with three silver brads. Criterion Collection 137. National Film Registry. Hardy, The BFI Companion to Crime. Selby Canon US. Silver US. Spicer US.

Scrapbook and Photo Album of Philadelphia Attorney and Artist William J. Conlen

[Philadelphia]: [no publisher], 1945. Very Good. Small quarto. Blue cloth gilt, entitled Book Shelf Scrap Book. Very good condition, with some yellowing to newspaper clippings and occasional loose items. Contains newspaper clippings, 32 gelatin silver photographs, typed poems and notes, letters to Conlon, and an original pen and ink design for a bookplate for Conlon by designer William Lewis Plack, all apparently compiled by William James Conlen's wife, Jean, and focusing on the years 1932-1939. Much of the material details the Conlen's relationship with the family of Jasper Yeates Brinton, a justice and later President of the international court presiding in Alexandria, with whom Conlen attended the University of Pennyslvania law school.Conlen was also an enthusiastic amateur artist and friends with noted artist Walter E. Baum, and there are original photographs of Baum and Conlen painting in rustic outdoor locations, as well as a newspaper clipping of an article written by Baum. A number of the photographs are taken in Egypt, but the photos primarily detail painting expeditions and family visits outside Philadelphia, in Rockport, Massachusetts and (perhaps) Chicago, as well as a number of undetermined locations. The final set of clippings focuses on relations with Mexico in the mid to late 1930s. Besides being a prominent admiralty lawyer and a skilled amateur painter, Conlen was the author of a number of books and articles, including Philadelphians Abroad and Vignettes of Mexico. The entire work provides an interesting overview of the concerns, work and leisure time of this well-connected Philadelphian, with some emphasis of the Buck's County art scene in the 1930s.

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION A very charming period work, issued July 1, 1945, just before the end of World War II. * The map was designed for foreign visitors to the great port city. The title cartouche is at the top left, with insets of "Native City," "Central District," "Western District Extension," "Shanghai Central of Municipal District," "Reference" key to the symbols, and a scale chart in kilometers and statute miles listed, with the 1:24000 scale noted. Red bold large font writing shows the districts: Nan Tao, Chinese City, The Special District and Poo Tung. The snake-like Whangpoo River winds its way through and divides the city, as it flows to the sea. Then Soochow Creek is also shown miandering through the Central District as it flows into the Whang Poo River. * The reference guide shows the symbols to locate banks, buildings, churches, consulates, fire stations, hospitals, markets, oil stations, bus road, railway, police stations, post offices, road completed, roads under construction, schools, stores, theaters and tram ways each have a unique symbol. * Great detail has been taken in citing important places to foreigners in smaller red characters: Quai de France-Bund , N. Szechuen Tiendong Rds, Haiming N.Honan Rds, Marche de Test, and several others. The race course is located in the center of the city, with various parks, gardens, tombs, fields, cemetaries, rifle range, athletic field, gymnasium, football grounds, et al in green. Bus, tram, railways noted. * The map begina at 25 degrees through 34 East to West, and from 31 to 12 degrees North-South, with a nice compass showing North in the lower right corner. * The condition of the map is remarkably nice, and folds down to fit inside the cloth binding, which is certainly small enough to slip into one's pocket. There is a very mild browning to the paper in general due to age, but is NOT brittle, or otherwise weak. This work was printed on quite thick paper which resisted tearing and is quite solid. * A remarkable work, suitable for framing and display. A lovely and graphic color image of Asia's most international and vibrant economic force in all China. .

Returned mail sent to a World War II Marine who was captured on Corregidor and died in a Japanese prison camp

1945. Very good. Envelope only, no letter. The envelope was addressed to Private First Class Walter Mikucki at the Osaka Yodogawa Bunsho POW Camp in Japan. It has a typed "Prisoner of War Postage Free" free frank in the upper right corner and has received a Chicago "War Savings machine postmark dated Jan 13, 1944. The envelope was opened by a U.S. censor and resealed using censor tape annotated, "Examined by 6587." The address was subsequently obliterated with a red cross and black bands using grease pencil or crayon. It has a circular handstamp in the lower right corner dated Nov 20 1945 with text that appears to read "[LIBER]ATED HQ. USMC., WASH., D.C." Ther is a USMC "pointing finger" return-to-sender hand stamp that point to the return address. Pfc. Mikucki was a member of the 4th Marine Regiment when, as war clouds rumbled in the Pacific, it was sent from China to Corregidor to defend Manila Bay in the Philippines. Shortly after its arrival, Japan launched its sneak attack on Pearl Harbor and allied bases throughout the Pacific. Corregidor was bombed continuously from late December, 1941 until May 5, 1942 when an overwhelming force of Japanese soldiers landed on the island. After tanks were brought ashore the following day, Lt. Gen. Johathan Wainwright realized defeat was imminent and surrendered fearing the thousand or so wounded men and bedraggled defenders would be annihated. Although most of the 4th Marine Regiment had been killed, the remaining men were transported to prison camps in Japan. The Yodogawa Bunsho Camp near Osaka was one of the smallest Japanes prisoner of war camps, and records in the National Archives identify only 12 prisoners that were known to have been held there. Pfc. Mikucki's name is not on that list. Other records show that Mikucki may have been imprisoned at various times at the Itchioke, Chikko, and Umeda Bunsho camps. He died from unknown causes on March 11, 1943. Clearly this information was not provided by the Japanese to the Red Cross as Mikucki's parents sent this letter ten months later. Examples of mail sent to American prisoners held in Japan are very scarce, and this example may be unique for as os 2017, I am unable to find any record of other returned mail for Corregidor Marines who died in Japanese prisoner of war camps in philatelic or ephemera auctions records, for sale in the trade, or held by institutions per OCLC. Also, there is no mention of anything similar in Gruenzner's Postal History of pf American POWs.

New York: J. J. Augustin, 1945. First edition. Oblong hardcover. Reportedly only 500 copies were printed. Text by Edwin Denby. This book was a revelation with it's design and gritty and grainy collection of images of the Ballet Russe. Includes 104 black and white photographs printed in gravure. A close to near fine copy with some creasing to the front free endpaper in an about very good dust jacket that has a small hole and some soiling on the rear panel, some minor wear to the edges, some toning to the front and rear panels and the plain unprinted spine having perished. Still, a very nice copy of this classic. Brodovitch's importance and impact on photography and graphic design can't be overestimated. (Parr & Badger v1, 240-241, Roth 110-111)

        [Photograph]: African-American Aviator. Circa 1945

Wichita Falls, Texas: Raley Portraits, 1945. Fine. Portrait photograph of an African-American aviator. Measuring 3" x 5" gelatin silver print. Fine in about fine card frame and name of "Raley Portraits" on both mount and verso of the image. The unidentified aviator is pictured wearing a leather helmet and goggles, white scarf, and leather flight jacket. The patch on the jacket indicates that he served with the Army Airways Communications System (AACS) which began in 1943. While the patch is missing the white border that indicates post-WWII service, we cannot confirm the exact date of the photo. The aviator is unidentified, but with presumably a relatively small number of African-American pilots thus employed, further identification might require only some modest research.

Herrenhäuser in Brandenburg und der Niederlausitz. 2 Bände. Leinen im Schuber [Gebundene Ausgabe] Peter-Michael Hahn (Autor), Hellmut Lorenz (Autor) Brandenburg Mark Kunst Architektur Schlösser Bauten Provinz Baukunst Adelskultur preußischer Staat

Nicolai. Brandenburg Mark Kunst Architektur Schlösser Bauten Provinz Baukunst Adelskultur preußischer Staat Das Werk "Herrenhäuser in Brandenburg und der Niederlausitz" ist eine kommentierte Neuausgabe eines Ansichtswerkes über Schlösser und Herrenhäuser aus der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. [Gebundene Ausgabe] Peter-Michael Hahn (Autor), Hellmut Lorenz
