An extraordinary, signed wartime photograph of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Field Marshal Alan Francis Brooke, Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, and General Harry Crerar, taken 4 March 1945 near the Siegfried Line inside the German border during Churchill's visit with the First Canadian Army, and signed by Churchill, Brooke, Montgomery, and Crerar

Canadian Military Headquarters, 2 Cockspur Street, London: Canadian Military, Public Relations Branch, 1945. Photograph. This extraordinary, signed Second World War photograph was taken on 4 March 1945 on the western front inside the German border near the Siegfried Line. This image is signed by all four wartime leaders it captures, each of them essential to the Allied victories that put them there, on German soil, on the cusp of winning the war. Standing together in the chill early spring are: British Prime Minister Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965); Field Marshal Alan Francis Brooke (1883-1963), wartime Chief of the Imperial General Staff, Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee, and professional head of the army; Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery (1887-1976), “the outstanding British field commander of the twentieth century” and; General Henry Duncan Graham “Harry” Crerar (1888-1965), then commanding the largest force ever commanded in the field by a Canadian. The four stand beside the car ostensibly used to transport the visiting dignitaries, bare trees and a gray sky visible in the background, and all four men dressed to ward off the cold. Montgomery faces the camera in the background center while Churchill (cigar in his mouth) and Crerar are in profile, facing one another, Crerar apparently in the process of speaking to Churchill. Brooke stands, hands clasped in front of him, behind and to the left of Crerar. Montgomery signed in black ink “B .L. Montgomery | Field-Marshal.” at the upper center of the image. Churchill's signature, “Winston S. Churchill”, is at the lower center-right of the photo, the “S.” and “Churchill” extending into the bottom of his overcoat. Crerar signed “H. D. G. Crerar” across his own right elbow. Brooke signed at the upper left background above his own head. Montgomery's signature, on the gray sky background, is clearest. Churchill's signature, heavily inked in black, is distinct, but on a darker background. Crerar's signature, also on a dark background, has faded, but remains clearly legible. Brooke's signature is still readily apparent, but considerably faded and more difficult to decipher. The silver-gelatin print measures 8.25 x 6.125 inches (21 x 15.75 cm). The verso is stamped “SECRET | NOT TO BE | PUBLISHED”. A second, fainter, ink stamp reads: “CANADIAN MILITARY PHOTOGRAPH | From | Public Relations Branch, | Canadian Military Headquarters, | 2 Cockspur Street” and specifies a “Photo No.” of “47373” hand-written in ink. Hand-written in pencil elsewhere on the verso is the number “47372”. Condition is very good. There are no losses or tears and the surface is clean, free of spotting, soiling, or appreciable abrasion. The lower left edge and bottom edge show minor rippling. This photograph came to us from the nephew of a Swiss collector, from whom it was inherited and whose collection held several vintage photographs of Churchill. After critical losses in the Battle of the Bulge, German forces were pushed back to the Siegfried Line. This system of pillboxes and strong points along the German western frontier fell to the Allies in early 1945. On 2 March 1945, “determined to cross the Siegfried Line himself,” Churchill flew to Brussels with Field Marshal Brooke and General Ismay. On 4 March, when this photo was taken, Churchill visited the First Canadian Army and General Crerar. (Gilbert, Vol. VII, pp.1239-40) Montgomery and Crerar were in the midst of Operation Veritable, the northern element of the Allied effort to clear German forces from the area between the Rhine and Maas rivers. The successful end of Operation Veritable came a few days after Churchill's visit; on 10 March, the Germans abandoned their last bridgehead on the west bank of the Rhine at Wesel. In a 26 March letter of congratulations to Crerar, Eisenhower wrote “Probably no assault in this war has been conducted under more appalling conditions of terrain than was that one. It speaks volumes for your skill and the valor of your soldiers that you carried it through to a successful conclusion.”

Quite scarce, with only five copies listed on OCLC First Search, and only one of these in the U.S. (at Illinois State). No. 49 on rives blanc from a total limitation of 106. 4to. 31.5 by 25.5 cm. Suite of 12 color etchings of a risqué Parisian nightclub, with dancers such as the Folies Bergere or Tabarin -- dance lines, skimpy attire, high kicking, a balloon dancer, a jaded chanteuse, an exotic "Latin" ballroom dancer, a black dancer, black jazz musicians, an "American" performer, etc. The pictures are titled in the table of plates, and each is signed in pencil by Ronsin. The very colorful plates capture the ebullient esprit of the nightclub, its fun, and perhaps just a touch of its sleaze and pathos. The plates are in fine condition. Only the slipcase shows wear.

        Cannery Row

Cannery Row by John Steinbeck (author of The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, and East of Eden) Hardcover First Edition - First Printing - Second State Binding - First State Dust Jacket Viking 1945. $2.00 cover price inside front dust jacket flap. First Printing since there is NO subsequent printing information on the copyright page. Second state canary yellow boards with blue lines and lettering on the front and spine. NOT to be confused with the wartime edition in blue boards. (see edition information below)Fine- in Near Fine unrestored Dust Jacket. A really nice exceptional copy in dust jacket. The book itself is just about fine with very clean pages. Dust jacket is quite clean and bright at the front, and does NOT have any major tears. Typical edge-wear top and bottom spine and rubbing and nicks to the same and at the corners, and some typical soiling to the back of the dust jacket. Overall a very clean and presentable first edition copy of one of the half-dozen major works of Steinbeck.Note on edition/state: The first edition/first printing of this book appeared in two states, both released simultaneously. The first state has been determined to be buff-colored (somewhat tan-like) boards while the second state is canary yellow. Apparently, during production, the printers ran out of the buff/tan materials for the boards, and to meet the publishing deadline, yellow colored materials were brought in and used for the rest of the print-run. Purists collectors will contest the buff-colored boards are the most preferable. However, they really represent at best simply two states of the first printing (not two printings as further printings would be indicated subsequently because the book was popular) since copies of both states were released simultaneously in 1945. At the time, buyers would have had about a 50-50 chance of purchasing either the buff or yellow boards of these copies. Typically, first state copies of the buff-tan variety in near fine or better dust jackets are priced at $2000+, while the yellow boards, as offered here, can be had for a fraction of the price. Everything else, the pages, the dust jacket price, etc, are the same. As a collector, I am more interested in the condition of the dust jacket rather than whether the boards are first or second state. Shortly thereafter, a so-called wartime edition was issued in blue boards. The wartime edition, while a good reading copy, has essentially almost no premium value on the collectors market.NOTE: All modern books with dust jackets come with dust jacket covers.ALSO: The pictures are of the actual item for sale. (The pictures are NOT stock photos.)

Returned mail sent to a World War II Marine who was captured on Corregidor and died in a Japanese prison camp

1945. Very good. Envelope only, no letter. The envelope was addressed to Private First Class Walter Mikucki at the Osaka Yodogawa Bunsho POW Camp in Japan. It has a typed "Prisoner of War Postage Free" free frank in the upper right corner and has received a Chicago "War Savings machine postmark dated Jan 13, 1944. The envelope was opened by a U.S. censor and resealed using censor tape annotated, "Examined by 6587." The address was subsequently obliterated with a red cross and black bands using grease pencil or crayon. It has a circular handstamp in the lower right corner dated Nov 20 1945 with text that appears to read "[LIBER]ATED HQ. USMC., WASH., D.C." Ther is a USMC "pointing finger" return-to-sender hand stamp that point to the return address. Pfc. Mikucki was a member of the 4th Marine Regiment when, as war clouds rumbled in the Pacific, it was sent from China to Corregidor to defend Manila Bay in the Philippines. Shortly after its arrival, Japan launched its sneak attack on Pearl Harbor and allied bases throughout the Pacific. Corregidor was bombed continuously from late December, 1941 until May 5, 1942 when an overwhelming force of Japanese soldiers landed on the island. After tanks were brought ashore the following day, Lt. Gen. Johathan Wainwright realized defeat was imminent and surrendered fearing the thousand or so wounded men and bedraggled defenders would be annihated. Although most of the 4th Marine Regiment had been killed, the remaining men were transported to prison camps in Japan. The Yodogawa Bunsho Camp near Osaka was one of the smallest Japanes prisoner of war camps, and records in the National Archives identify only 12 prisoners that were known to have been held there. Pfc. Mikucki's name is not on that list. Other records show that Mikucki may have been imprisoned at various times at the Itchioke, Chikko, and Umeda Bunsho camps. He died from unknown causes on March 11, 1943. Clearly this information was not provided by the Japanese to the Red Cross as Mikucki's parents sent this letter ten months later. Examples of mail sent to American prisoners held in Japan are very scarce, and this example may be unique for as os 2017, I am unable to find any record of other returned mail for Corregidor Marines who died in Japanese prisoner of war camps in philatelic or ephemera auctions records, for sale in the trade, or held by institutions per OCLC. Also, there is no mention of anything similar in Gruenzner's Postal History of pf American POWs.

Le Theatre de La Mode [exhibition catalogue]

La Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, Paris & London 1945 - Lavish exhibition catalogue for the first post-war exhibition of Parisian couture which relied on wire mannequins and miniature costumes in an effort to revive the French fashion industry. The French organisers drew upon a stellar roster of contributors which included Jean Cocteau and for this catalogue the photography of Brassai and Doisneau among others. Spiral-bound with a Berard lithograph to the card cover which is rubbed to edges with slight damp marking along the top edge of the front cover and soiling to the lower cover. Internally very good; two staple punctures on the first leaf where a piece of ephemera was formerly attached. The advertisements are printed in colour on high quality coated paper and include contributions from Hermes, Nina Ricci and Schiaparelli followed by a preface by Lelong, title page and contents on buff card. The story of the exhibition profiles the contributors with extensive half-tone photos of exhibits and exhibitors. The exhibition appeared in Paris and London before continuing to New York and San Francisco. This book comes from the collection of June Cashman, longterm costume designer for Yorkshire Television.         NEW MAP OF SHANGHAI: Ahead of Title: Pocket Edition 1945.

      - [Shanghai 1945, Asia Geographical Institute.] Blue cloth, 10 x 14.5 cm., a color folding map opens to 75 x 53.5 cm., English text, very good, no tears or defects. OBSCURE WORK ! FIRST AND ONLY EDITION A very charming period work, issued July 1, 1945, just before the end of World War II. * The map was designed for foreign visitors to the great port city. The title cartouche is at the top left, with insets of "Native City," "Central District," "Western District Extension," "Shanghai Central of Municipal District," "Reference" key to the symbols, and a scale chart in kilometers and statute miles listed, with the 1:24000 scale noted. Red bold large font writing shows the districts: Nan Tao, Chinese City, The Special District and Poo Tung. The snake-like Whangpoo River winds its way through and divides the city, as it flows to the sea. Then Soochow Creek is also shown miandering through the Central District as it flows into the Whang Poo River. * The reference guide shows the symbols to locate banks, buildings, churches, consulates, fire stations, hospitals, markets, oil stations, bus road, railway, police stations, post offices, road completed, roads under construction, schools, stores, theaters and tram ways each have a unique symbol. * Great detail has been taken in citing important places to foreigners in smaller red characters: Quai de France-Bund , N. Szechuen Tiendong Rds, Haiming N.Honan Rds, Marche de Test, and several others. The race course is located in the center of the city, with various parks, gardens, tombs, fields, cemetaries, rifle range, athletic field, gymnasium, football grounds, et al in green. Along the Whang Poo waterfront are located some of the major shipping lines, customs, shipyards, major trading companies, merchants, steamship docks, Standard Oil, wharfs &c. * The inset of the Central District shows every main and many smaller streets, with the location of various points of interest, theaters, YMCA, Salvation Army, police, taylors, merchants, hotels, banks, cafes, famous buildings, stock exchange, native products, power company, Chinese companies, consulates, Christian bookstore, Robert Dollar Building and a host of others. Bus, tram, railways noted. * The map begina at 25 degrees through 34 East to West, and from 31 to 12 degrees North-South, with a nice compass showing North in the lower right corner. * The condition of the map is remarkably nice, and folds down to fit inside the cloth binding, which is certainly small enough to slip into one's pocket. There is a very mild browning to the paper in general due to age, but is NOT brittle, or otherwise weak. This work was printed on quite thick paper which resisted tearing and is quite solid. * A remarkable work, suitable for framing and display. A lovely and graphic color image of Asia's most international and vibrant economic force in all China.
