Le Theatre de La Mode [exhibition catalogue]

La Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, Paris & London 1945 - Lavish exhibition catalogue for the first post-war exhibition of Parisian couture which relied on wire mannequins and miniature costumes in an effort to revive the French fashion industry. The French organisers drew upon a stellar roster of contributors which included Jean Cocteau and for this catalogue the photography of Brassai and Doisneau among others. Spiral-bound with a Berard lithograph to the card cover which is rubbed to edges with slight damp marking along the top edge of the front cover and soiling to the lower cover. Internally very good; two staple punctures on the first leaf where a piece of ephemera was formerly attached. The advertisements are printed in colour on high quality coated paper and include contributions from Hermes, Nina Ricci and Schiaparelli followed by a preface by Lelong, title page and contents on buff card. The story of the exhibition profiles the contributors with extensive half-tone photos of exhibits and exhibitors. The exhibition appeared in Paris and London before continuing to New York and San Francisco. This book comes from the collection of June Cashman, longterm costume designer for Yorkshire Television.         NEW MAP OF SHANGHAI: Ahead of Title: Pocket Edition 1945.

      - [Shanghai 1945, Asia Geographical Institute.] Blue cloth, 10 x 14.5 cm., a color folding map opens to 75 x 53.5 cm., English text, very good, no tears or defects. OBSCURE WORK ! FIRST AND ONLY EDITION A very charming period work, issued July 1, 1945, just before the end of World War II. * The map was designed for foreign visitors to the great port city. The title cartouche is at the top left, with insets of "Native City," "Central District," "Western District Extension," "Shanghai Central of Municipal District," "Reference" key to the symbols, and a scale chart in kilometers and statute miles listed, with the 1:24000 scale noted. Red bold large font writing shows the districts: Nan Tao, Chinese City, The Special District and Poo Tung. The snake-like Whangpoo River winds its way through and divides the city, as it flows to the sea. Then Soochow Creek is also shown miandering through the Central District as it flows into the Whang Poo River. * The reference guide shows the symbols to locate banks, buildings, churches, consulates, fire stations, hospitals, markets, oil stations, bus road, railway, police stations, post offices, road completed, roads under construction, schools, stores, theaters and tram ways each have a unique symbol. * Great detail has been taken in citing important places to foreigners in smaller red characters: Quai de France-Bund , N. Szechuen Tiendong Rds, Haiming N.Honan Rds, Marche de Test, and several others. The race course is located in the center of the city, with various parks, gardens, tombs, fields, cemetaries, rifle range, athletic field, gymnasium, football grounds, et al in green. Along the Whang Poo waterfront are located some of the major shipping lines, customs, shipyards, major trading companies, merchants, steamship docks, Standard Oil, wharfs &c. * The inset of the Central District shows every main and many smaller streets, with the location of various points of interest, theaters, YMCA, Salvation Army, police, taylors, merchants, hotels, banks, cafes, famous buildings, stock exchange, native products, power company, Chinese companies, consulates, Christian bookstore, Robert Dollar Building and a host of others. Bus, tram, railways noted. * The map begina at 25 degrees through 34 East to West, and from 31 to 12 degrees North-South, with a nice compass showing North in the lower right corner. * The condition of the map is remarkably nice, and folds down to fit inside the cloth binding, which is certainly small enough to slip into one's pocket. There is a very mild browning to the paper in general due to age, but is NOT brittle, or otherwise weak. This work was printed on quite thick paper which resisted tearing and is quite solid. * A remarkable work, suitable for framing and display. A lovely and graphic color image of Asia's most international and vibrant economic force in all China.

'Coastal Scene, Morotai'. A well-executed watercolour on paper (an impressive 274 x 397 mm) mounted on cardboard and captioned on the original attached matt (external dimensions 405 x 505 mm). The painting (featuring tents and simply-constructed dwellings nestled among palm trees), is in fine condition; the matt has a thin light tidemark along the bottom left-hand margin

The artist is unidentified, but he was possibly attached to No. 9 Repair and Salvage Unit RAAF (9 RSU). The Australian War Memorial website states that in 1945 three artists already serving with the RAAF were seconded to the RAAF War History Section as artists - Harold Freedman (1915-1999), Max Newton (1919-1975), and Eric Thake (1904-1982) - but they may be excluded as possibilities. According to the Operations Record Book of 9 RSU (in the National Archives of Australia), an advance party arrived at Morotai on 31 January 1945, with the main party and equipment following in mid-March. The Spitfire Association website adds: '457 Squadron, as part of the 1st Tactical Air Force ... was deployed to Morotai in the Indies in early 1945. Beginning on the 10th February 1945, operations continued at a high intensity for the next three months. Then the Squadron relocated again, commencing operations from the island of Labuan, on the Borneo coast, on the 19th June, primarily in support of the Australian land campaign in British North Borneo. It mounted its last operational sorties on 13 August, two days before the Japanese surrender'. The painting would appear to be contemporary.

A Diabetic Manual for the Mutual Use of Doctor and Patient SIGNED

Lea & Febiger 1945 - "A Diabetic Manual for the Mutual Use of Doctor and Patient" by Dr. Elliott Joslin, 7th Edition. Published in 1945 Lea and Febiger in Philadelphia. The book measures 5.5'' x 8.25'' and is 238 pages. Signed by the author. The book is in very good plus condition. The corners are bumped. Slight foxing on the title page, fore-edges, and at limited points throughout the book. The boards are slightly stained and sunned, with light shelf wear. The text block is bright, complete and largely clean. Inscribed "With best wishes, Live ever fully, but remember sometime there will be still better methods of treatment". Dated November 20 1945. "Elliott Joslin was the first doctor in the United States to specialize in diabetes and was the founder of today's Joslin Diabetes Center. Dr. Joslin was involved for seven decades in most every aspect of diabetes investigation and treatment, save for the fact that he did not discover insulin. Following the Toronto group's blockbuster discovery of insulin in 1921, and the group's disbanding several years later, Joslin became effectively the Dean of diabetes mellitus. In the mid 1920s, Joslin, in his mid 50s, took the reins as the world spokesman for the "cause of diabetes." He was the first to advocate for teaching patients to care for their own diabetes, an approach now commonly referred to as "DSME" or Diabetes Self-Management Education. He is also a recognized pioneer in glucose management, identifying that tight glucose control leads to fewer and less extreme complications." - Wikipedia Dr. Joslin was a Yale and Harvard graduate, and the Joslin Diabetes Center is affiliated with Harvard Medical School. This will make this book of special interest to any Harvard alumni, medical professionals, or those interested in medical history. The book is an important part of the history of medicine and the fight to make diabetes a livable illness instead of a death sentence. Inventory # (H6-66) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Voyage of Captain Bellingshausen to the Antarctic Seas 1819-1821. Translated from the Russian. Edited by Frank Debenham .

London Hakluyt Society 1945 - First English Edition. Hakluyt Society second series, XCI &XCII. 2 volumes, 8vo., 20 maps, frontispiece to each volume, 36 plates, original blue cloth gilt, original cream dustwrappers lettered in black, a fine set. Very rare with dustwrappers. Bellingshausen and his 118 companions belong in the front rank of early Antarctic explorers: they circumnavigated the Antarctic circle (the first since Cook to have done so), confirmed the existence of the South Shetland islands, discovered several new islands at high southern latitudes, and may well have been the first to sight the Antarctic continent itself. This is the first translation of Bellinghausen's original Russian narrative (1831), complete with notes from one of Britain's most experienced Antarctic geographers. Taurus 3; Rosove 33.A1.         Jonques et Sampans.

Paris Horizons de France 1945 - 4to., 154, [iv]pp., 148 colour illustrations including 16 full-page, in sheets in original wrappers, card chemise and slipcase, a fine example. First edition of this beautifully illustrated work, limited to only 525 copies. The illustrations, printed in a very high quality, offer a sharp-eyed account of Charles Fouqueray's voyages from Singapore to Hong Kong, Macao, and Shanghai. Representing the different shapes of boats in these regions, the watercolours also focus on the local sailors and fishermen in action. Fouqueray's use of a large range of colours to depict the sea's various tints and shades conveys a poetic atmosphere to his illustrations, signed with his orientalist monogramme. A map, at the very beginning of the book, represents part of the Asian coast that was explored and drawn by Fouqueray. The French author Claude Farrère (1876-1957) became known for his novels set in exotic places. After a twenty-five year career in the Army, he decided to concentrate entirely on writing. Winner of the Prix Goncourt in 1905 for his novel Les Civilisés, he was elected chairman of the Academie Française in 1935. Farrère wrote this work on the suggestion of his friend the illustrator Charles Fouqueray, who had sent him watercolours made during a trip in Asia. Charles Fouqueray (1869-1956) studied art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where one of his masters was the well-known Academic painter Alexandre Cabanel. First interested in painting, he then specialised in illustration, in particular in news magazines such as Le Monde Illustré and L'llustration. In Jonques et Sampans, these two artists convey, mixing text and illustrations, their personal impressions on the East-Asian navigators, ships and waterways. The introductory chapter, written by sea captain and author of several naval history books Auguste Thomazi, gives a thorough but readable description of the two Chinese boats that compose the title of this work: the junks and sampans. In a very personal and easygoing style, Claude Farrère narrates his memories and thoughts about past experiences related to sailing on the East Asian coast. On the original covee are four Chinese characters. They read, as translated in French by the publisher, L'apparition des voiles and Le clapotis des rames.         China Proper.

[Various printers for H.M. Stationery Office], July 1944 - [vol. III July 1945]. 8vo, three volumes. Original green cloth, spines and front covers lettered in gilt; pp. xvi, 542; vii, 370; xiv, 653, highly illustrated with plates, maps (one large and folding, in rear pocket) and plans, spines faded, cloth a little marked, internally good; from Edmonton Public Libraries with according shelfmarks, library book plates and stamps (but never lent out). First edition, a very rarely seen complete set. B. R. 530, 530 and B (Restricted). Geographical Handbook Series. - Probably one of the best-researched set of books on China during the turbulent period, covering all aspects of the vast country under occupation, with revolutionary movements thriving, civil war and uncertainty of the future. Volume I contains information about physical geography, history and peoples, followed by chapters on modern history and administration in the second volume. Economic geography, ports and communications are illustrated and described in the concluding volume. 'A series of intelligence handbooks produced during the First World War had proved valuable both during the conflict and as subsequent reference sources. Early in the Second World War the Director of Naval Intelligence ordered the preparation of a new and improved series to meet the requirements of the day. The Handbooks were designed to provide, in the words of the Preface, "for the use of Commanding Officers, information in a comprehensive and convenient form about countries which they may be called upon to visit, not only in war but in peace-time; secondly, to maintain the high standard of education in the Navy and, by supplying officers with material for lectures ... to ensure for all ranks that visits to a new country shall be both interesting and profitable"' (Cambridge Archive Editions, who reproduce a few titles of the series, online). The series was edited by Kenneth Mason (1887-1976), a geographer-soldier, mountaineer and the first statutory professor of geography at Oxford University. Inspired by Younghusband's Heart of a Continent as a child, he conducted intense surveys of the Himalayas and was awarded an RGS medal in 1927 for his surveys of India and Russian Turkestan as well for his leadership of the Shakshagam Expedition. 'Mason also revitalized the links between geography at Oxford and practical service. These had begun with the RGS's involvement in the establishment of the discipline at Oxford and were fostered by Halford Mackinder and particularly his successor, A. J. Herbertson. Under Mason, with his extensive contacts in the military services, government, the city, and the RGS, the school consolidated its practical focus, linked to regional planning, surveying, exploration, teaching, and colonial service. A notable product was the Admiralty handbooks produced during the war when the school became an intelligence unit' (ODNB). China Proper seems to be amongst the rarest Naval Intelligence Division Georgraphical Handbooks of the Second World War.

        [Notebook of poetry]

Unpublished; Handwritten by the Author, 1945. The only copy in existence. Hardcover. VG- (Content clean and tight but with age toning to leaves. Covers rubbed; wearing at outer edges.). Outer Physical Description: Red leatherette covers with a Merkbuch notebook, originally blank, with grid graph paper, inserted into slit in back cover. Notebook is removable, to be replaced with another in the red folio cover. Includes slant pocket inside front cover and upper/lower flaps inside back cover, both for placing receipts, photos, and extraneous pieces of paper. The gilt front lettering is, "Erste osterreichische SPAR-CASSE, WIEN," the oldest savings bank in Austria, founded in 1819. The book measures 16x21 cm and 1 cm in thickness. Internal Physical Description: Inscription page followed by a mix of 33 pp. with writing on only one side, 10 with writing on both sides, and the remaining 15 pages blank until the end of the book. Two pages have been torn out and are not present. Two small pieces of other paper, one hand-written, one typed, are laid in. Content Description - all content is handwritten, presumably by Neris: The front free end paper contains the writing, "Wien 23.11.44, A. Civilyte," although the A could possibly be an F. This notebook was in the personal book collection of American artist Will Barnet and his wife, Elena Civilte Barnet, who was Lithuanian. The book could have belonged to a family member, or it could have been given directly to Elena by Neris. An inscriptionon on the following page is in Lithuanian and appears to be a short poem. The handwriting makes it somewhat difficult to differentiate among the letters m/i/u/n/ and f/p/h/k, etc. It reads, as far as I can guess, as: "Musu dienos-kaip švent kaip žyd jimas vypuios! / Tad skub kim gyventi, nes praeis, nebegri jos! - S. Neris 1945. Geguzes 5d. Wittenwater," which translates loosely as "Our days - how the feast is like flowering! / So let's rush to live, because it's gone, do not stop it! - S. Neris, 1945. May 5th. Wittenwater." (Neris died two months later, in July in Moscow.) The notebook contains other poetry by Neris and by another Lithuanian poet, Henrikas Nagy, as well as some poetry and prose by Rilke, Nietzsche, Neris, and Akhmatova. The works of Rilke and Nietzsche are written in German; the poem by Akhamatova is written in Russian (Cyrillic); and all poems by Neris and Nagy are in Lithuanian. Two of Neris's other poems are Gyvenimas giesme (A Song of Life) and Tokios Tolimos (So Far Away). Some of the pages look as if there is narrative written below the poetry. I am surmising that these may be Neris's comments or critiques of the works. Description of the separate two pieces of paper laid in: One is a half piece of lined tablet paper. On it is a poem, Chanson d'Automne, by P. Verlaine, written in French by hand (probably Neris's), in ink, with a free-hand sketch of a woman and two flowers. The other piece is a half sheet of plain paper, typed, with a hand-written note in the margin, dated 1946. The text of both the poem and the note is in Lithuanian, and the poem it titled, "Lietuvaitei" (For Lithuanians) The poem is dated "Stutthofo Koncentracijos lageris, 1943. VIII. 26 diena," meaning it originally was written August 26, 1943 in the Stutthof Concentration Camp. I cannot find information about Neris in the Stutthof camp, but the Lithuanian poet, Balys Sruoga, was, and his dates correspond with Neris's, so the poem could be his. Family of Neris: Neris married Bernardas Bucas, a sculptor. She had a son, Saul Bucas, who died in 2004. Saul was married to Laima Bucas. Supposedly, Neris had/has 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Her granddaughter, Salome Buca, attended an event on July 7, 2015 honoring the 100th anniversary of Neris's death, held at the Salomeja Neris Museum in Kaunas. Final Note: The initial inscription/poem seems quite poignant (something about passing and not returning...). If this is, indeed what it seems, this could well be one of the last handwritten compendiums by Neris with her own poetry and examples of her favorite poetry by other writers. There is a little flower tucked between two pages of the book. Unique. No other in existence.
