"BALLET: 104 Photographs" Ballets Russes 1935-1939

Of the original publication in 1945 of an edition of only 500, being offered here is a scarce, uncommonly fine copy of this first edition of the legendery masterpiece by photographer Alexey Brodovitch in its original grey boards binding and in fine condition throughout. It has acquired the somewhat inevitable minor darkening to edges of the cream colored stock which, in this case, enhances rather than detracts.. Measuring 11" by 8 3/4" with 143 pages and Index. Each black and white photograph is full page and without flaws of Ballets Russes from the 1930s The dustjacket is unrestored. Front and back portions are sunned and detached from the unusual envelope structure which wrapped the boards. Currently safely encased in 5ml archival mylar jacket. Many articles and comments about this book and the photographer Alexey Brodovitch can be found on the Internet. Wikipedia's entry about this particular book discusses the camera techniques used. The edition was limited to 500.

Nuremberg Defendant Wilhelm Keitel Is Concerned About Evidence the German Army Planned on Massive Civilian Casualties in Its Invasion of Russia

Nuremberg Defendant Wilhelm Keitel Is Concerned About Evidence the German Army Planned on Massive Civilian Casualties in Its Invasion of Russia & & During World War II, Keitel served as Chief of the Supreme Command of the Armed Forces, which was known as the OKW. He proved a weak and cautious commander, and never challenging Hitler's orders, was referred to by his colleagues as a "Little Lackey." He signed numerous orders of dubious legality under the laws of war, and unquestionably allowed Himmler a free hand with his policies of racial extermination. On May 8, 1945, Keitel signed Germany's surrender to the Red Army. Four days later he was arrested, and soon faced the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, which charged him with a number of offences: conspiracy to commit crimes against peace; planning, initiating and waging wars of aggression; war crimes; and crimes against humanity. The commander never expected to be acquitted but pled not guilty with the justification of just following orders.& & Dr. Otto Nelte served as Keitel's defence attorney during the trial which lasted from November 1945 to July 1946, and in his summation for the defence on July 8, 1946, stressed that his client was not trying to minimize the role he had played in the Third Reich, but to clarify its character. As he put it, Keitel was fighting to save not his neck but his face. He further stated that Keitel's sole guiding principles had been loyalty and obedience. His client, he maintained, asked not for acquittal but for his tragic dilemma to be recognized and understood. & & During the testimony in April 1946, a key document was entered into evidence that showed that the OKW_(and Keitel) had acknowledged openly that exploitation of Russian food supplies during the imminent invasion was going to entail the mass starvation of native inhabitants. This was recorded at a meeting of state secretaries on May 2, 1941, where it was discussed that & "...umpteen million people will doubtless starve to death when we extract what is necessary for us from the country." In introducing this documentation, the prosecution stated, "If it pleases the Tribunal, another secret document captured from the OKW files, we think establishes the motive for the attack on the Soviet Union. It also establishes the full awareness of the Nazi conspirators of the Crimes against Humanity which would result from their attack. The document is a memorandum of 2 May 1941, concerning the result of a discussion on that day with the state secretaries concerning the Case Barbarossa. The document is initialled by a Major Von Gusovius, a member of the staff of General Thomas set up to handle the economic exploitations of the territory occupied by the Germans during the course of the aggression against Russia. The document is numbered 2718-PS in our numbered series of documents. I offer it in evidence as Exhibit USA-32." & & The production of this document disturbed Keitel who wanted to avoid being associated with it. He wrote Nelte from his cell. Autograph Note Signed, Nuremberg, no date but April 1946, to "Attorney at Law Dr. Nelte." "1. I have to see document number 2718 PS because I want to find out about the author of this nonsense!_a)_During the winter of 1944/45, von Gusovius was still at OKW headquarters. b)_General Schubert!?! 2. I shall, unfortunately, still have to trouble you about that lease. 3. One enclosure: notes!" & & Keitel was right to be concerned by incriminating evidence like document number 2718 PS. He was found guilty on all charges and hanged. &

Structure of Vitamin B12. [with:] The X-ray Crystallographic Investigation of the Structure of Penicillin [with: six other offprints]

1945-65. Exceptional collection of inscribed offprints, from the library of crystallographer Jack D. Dunitz, of Hodgkin’s most important papers, in which she solved the molecular structure of penicillin and vitamin B12, the last which revealed the existence of a hitherto-unsuspected chemical grouping, the corrin nucleus. Lawrence Bragg compared these achievements with ‘breaking the sound barrier’, and in 1964 Hodgkin received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this work.

& [Papers 1-2:] “The structure of vitamin B12, published in Nature in July 1956, represented a giant step forward for x-ray crystallography. The Oxford-Princeton collaboration had provided structural information that was not available from traditional methods of organic analysis, which Hodgkin described in an earlier paper as ‘for any crystallographer something of a dream-like situation.’ Even more impressively, the planar group of B12 was a novel chemical entity, for which the term corrin nucleus was later coined.” (DSB). After the first announcement, in the journal Nature, Hodgkin and her team published a series of papers detailing their discoveries in the Proceedings of the Royal Society [see ‘Landmarks of Science & Medicine from the Library of Andras Gedeon’ lot 156]. Offered here is the rare offprint from Nature annotated by Dunitz together with the offprint of the first of the eight parts from the Proceedings inscribed by Hodgkin.

& [Paper 3:] “In collaboration with Charles Bunn and Anne Turner-Jones at ICI’s Northwich laboratories, who analyzed the sodium salt using the ‘fly’s eye’ method of modeling diffraction patters, they solved the penicillin structure by 1945. With the help of the scientific service run by L. J. Comrie, they calculated the complete three-dimensional structure on a Hollerith punched card calculator, one of the earliest examples of chrystallographic computing. News of the success gradually leaked out into the crystallographic community: what had begun as a wartime secrecy continued after VE-day as commercial secrecy to protect the interests of the US firms who had undertaken the mass production of the drug, and the penicillin structure was not formally published until 1949 [citing the offered paper no. 2]” (ODNB). Offered here the very offprint inscribed by co-author Barbara Rogers-Low to Dunitz. “Hodgkin's work on penicillin made her internationally famous. Britain’s top scientific body, the Royal Society, elected her to membership in 1947; she was only the third woman to receive this honor.” (Yount, Woman in Science and Math).

& [Paper 4:] Inscribed offprint of her Nobel lecture. “Dorothy Mary Crowfoot Hodgkin was the sole Nobel Laureate in chemistry in 1964, receiving the prize for her work on the determination by X-ray techniques of the structure of several important biochemical compounds, including vitamin B12 and penicillin. She was the third woman [after Marie and Irene Curie], and the first Englishwoman, to receive a Nobel Prize in Chemistry”. (James, Nobel Laureates in Chemistry 1901-1992).

& [Paper 6:] “With Carlisle she solved the complete three-dimensional structure of cholesterol iodide, including all the bond lengths and angles. This was the first crystallographic study she had pursued to its conclusion, and the first anywhere of such complex organic molecule.” (ODNB).

& “Unlike other crystallographers of her generation, Dorothy Hodgkin was not associated with any particular technical breakthrough. She was always at the forefront in the use of computers to carry out crystallographic calculations. However, like others who had cut their teeth on more intuitive approaches, she did not welcome the day when x-ray analysis became automated. Hodgkin’s main contribution was in developing an approach to x-ray analysis that filled the gap between the trial-and-error methods used by W. L. Bragg and Linus Pauling in the 1920s and the brute force methods that became feasible in the late 1950s. This approach required profound insights into chemistry and crystallography but was capable of providing unambiguous structural information about organic molecules too complex for more traditional and indirect methods of analysis…

& “In 1964 Hodgkin was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry ‘for her determinations by X-ray techniques of the structures of important biochemical substances.’ The following year, she was only the second woman ever to be appointed to the Order of Merit, a group of twenty-five distinguished living citizens selected by the British sovereign.” (DSB)

& Provenance: All items are from the library of Jack David Dunitz, British chemist and one of the greatest chemical crystallographers. Together with Sydney Brenner, Dorothy Hodgkin, Leslie Orgel, and Beryl M. Oughton he was one of the first people in April 1953 to see the model of the structure of DNA, constructed by Francis Crick and James Watson. 1. ‘Structure of vitamin B12’. The Postwar Speeches, a full set of jacketed first editions: The Sinews of Peace, Europe Unite, In the Balance, Stemming the Tide, and The Unwritten Alliance

Here is a superlative, collector grade, British first edition set of all five of Churchill's post-WWII speech volumes. These volumes span the period from Demobilization in late 1945, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through his second Premiership (1951-1955) into a time when Churchill passes "into a living national memorial" of the time he has lived and the Nation, Empire, and free world he has served. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the onset of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb, development of the hydrogen bomb, and the beginning of the space age (to name a few). These postwar speech volumes are much more scarce than Churchill's War Speeches volumes; all five of these books had only a single printing each. Moreover, collectors should note that the fifth and final volume, The Unwritten Alliance, is the last of Churchill's books published in his lifetime and was issued only in Britain, with no U.S. edition. All five volumes offered here are fine in near-fine or better dust jackets. All five cloth bindings are clean, tight, and square with sharp corners and virtually no wear. The contents of all five volumes are uniformly clean and tight. No spotting. No inscriptions or previous ownership marks of any kind. All five dust jackets are bright, clean, and unclipped, still bearing the original front flap prices. The Europe Unite, In the Balance, and The Unwritten Alliance dust jackets in particular are extraordinarily fine examples. Dust jackets for The Unwritten Alliance were notoriously poorly printed, and consequently are almost always rubbed or streaked, with orange showing through the black background. This example of Unwritten Alliance has superlative spine presentation and almost none of the endemic streaking. Please note that Stemming the Tide is the more desirable first state dust jacket. Dust jacket flaws in the set are few, confined to a trivial wear at The Sinews of Peace spine head and Stemming the Tide spine ends, a few incidental wear spots at hinges, and a .25 inch triangular chip at the top edge of the front face of the Stemming the Tide jacket. The dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A241.1, A246.1, A255.1, A264.1, A273; Woods/ICS A124(a), A128(a), A130(a), A137(a), A142; Langworth pages 184, 296, 301, 309, 338

The Second World War, Volume I, The Gathering Storm, a pre-publication galley proof with comments

This exciting find is a galley proof of the first volume of Churchill's history of the Second World War. This offers a snapshot of Churchill's masterwork being prepared for publication. This is the only such galley proof we have seen on the market in memory. In July 1945, so near the victory he did so much to secure, Churchill lost the premiership to the Labour Party. Writing his history of the Second World War consumed most of the years he spent as Leader of the Opposition, before his second premiership in late 1951. Seldom, if ever, has a statesman had such singular ability to both make and write history. The sixth and final volume of The Second World War would not be published until 1953 - the year Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature. A galley proof is an early printing of a work, usually produced after a manuscript has been typeset but before proofreading. They are typically printed for the author, editors, and proof readers. They are normally produced on long sheets of paper with wide margins (for comments) and bound inexpensively. While galley proofs can also be used by publicists or sent to book reviewers, their primary purpose is the editing process. More polished Advance Reading Copies (ARC) come later, more closely resemble the final published form, and are typically produced in greater numbers for circulation to reviewers. This galley proof of The Gathering Storm measures 12 by 7 inches and bulks 1.5 inches. It is produced on long, single-sided sheets, untrimmed at the top and bottom edges and unpaginated. The manuscript is bound in plain brown paper with a simple title and author label printed black on white paper affixed to the front cover. It is printed with wide blank side margins, with the text occupying a centered column 4.25 inches wide. Textual differences between the U.S. (true first) edition and the later British first edition attest that this is a U.S. edition galley. This galley was evidently produced early enough in the pre-publication process that it lacks the preface, table of contents, acknowledgements, moral of the work, theme of the volume, and maps and diagrams of the published text. The text appears to closely conform to that of the published version. This copy bears extensive comments which appear likely to have been made by an early stage reviewer, whose identity is unknown, as is the precise date of publication. However, we know that "The Gathering Storm" title was not selected until at least early February 1948, with publication of the U.S. edition on 21 June 1948. The extensive margin comments appear consistent with those of a reviewer than those of an editor or proofreader. The reader's comments and underlining are in pencil, extending 29 pages into the text. A total of 17 pages bear notation and/or comments, these being pages 1, 3, 4, 6, 9-11, 14, 15, 20, 22-24, 26-29. All notations appear consistent in style and handwriting, indicating that they were made by a single reader. Several margin comments either dissent with or augment certain points of history addressed in the narrative, particularly with respect to the deficiencies and draconian demands of the Treaty of Versailles. The reader shows detailed knowledge of events, as comments sometimes name specific individuals. Moreover, there is some indication that the comments may be those of an American reader, since there is sharp criticism of England both expressed and implied, as well positive comment about Wilson; however, this is interpretative speculation. Overall condition is very good given the perishable nature of such an item. The brown paper binding is square, tight, clean, and complete, though dog-eared at the corners and with some wear and separation at the spine ends. The contents are clean and bright with some wear at the page edges of the first few dozen pages of text, as well as the final few pages. A hint of spotting is confined to the text block fore edge.

        Lord's Prayer"

NY, 1945. A stunning original painting in ink and gouache by the renowned illustrator Arthur Szyk, signed and dated by the artist. The painting measures 7 3/4 by 5 3/4 inches, on illustration board measuring 12 by 9 1/4 inches. This illustrated Lord’s Prayer is comprised of fourteen calligraphed lines, illuminated in bright colors in the style of a medieval manuscript. Along the left margin of the page is an intricate border, incorporating portraits of people praying, including a little boy kneeling with his hands folded. A floral border extends along the bottom of the page, and tiny, delicate curls of tracery fill in the border and extend along the top edge. Szyk’s work is characterized by its minute detail, and his style is very much in the tradition of Eastern miniaturists. Szyk was born in Lodz, Poland in 1894. His artistic talents became evident at an early age, and he was sent to Paris to study at the Académie Julian when he was a teenager. He was a prolific illustrator of books, many of which were of Jewish content, including his masterpiece, The Haggadah. After World War II, Szyk moved to the United States, where he became one of the chief artists for the Limited Editions Club and contributed illustrations and caricatures to several magazines. This illustration was published in the January 1946 edition of Coronet magazine, inside the front cover. Mounted and framed. On the sheet of illustration board, around the illustration, are publisher’s notes. Two small spots of tape residue, light soiling to margins, light toning; the painting is in fine condition.

        Portrait photograph of Rufino Tamayo

New York december 27 1945 New York, december 27, 1945. (TAMAYO, RUFINO) Apx. 9-3/4 x 6-3/4 inches. . Fine . Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991) was a Zapotecan Indian born in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. He moved to MExico City where he attended the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plasticas "San Carlos." Tamayo was exposed to the cultural wealth of pre-Colombian MExico as he worked as a draftsman at the Museo Nacional de Arqueologia. While his contemporaries Siqueiros, Rivera and Orozco were advocating art with a message, often political, Tamayo's work focused on plastic forms integrated with a masterful use of colors and textures. He is one of the best known Latin American artists. His exhibitions have been in major museums such as the Palacio Nacional de Bellas Artes, MExico, The Philips Collection in Washington, The Guggenheim Museum in New York, The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid as well as important art galleries throughout the world

        Animal Farm. A Fairy Story.

London, Secker & Warburg, 1945. Original gree full cloth with original printed green and grey dust jacket, not price-clipped. Capitals of cloth spine faded. Dust-jacked with small lacks of paper at capitals (where cloth is faded and a few, small tears at extremities. A very small piece of paper loss at lower part of back on the dust-jacket. Lines of fairly light brown spotting (rust?) to front of dust-jacket. An old owner's name to front free end-paper. All in all a fine and sound, completely unrestored copy - the fragile dust-jacket, which is made of recycled war-time paper, is often found in very poor condition.. First edition of one of the most important literary works of the 20th century, the satirical-political masterpiece that so magnificently reflects the events leading up to the Russian Revolution and brilliantly caricatures Stalinism. As Orwell himself put it, with this work, he deliberately tried "to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole". (Orwell, "Why I Write"). "Animal Farm" brilliantly portrays not only the corruption of the revolution, but also how traits of human character themselves corrupt society. The greatest flaw of revolution is not the corrupt leadership on its own, but also the greed, indifference, ignorance, shortsightedness, wickedness, etc. that govern the individuals that make up the masses. The work was written between late 1943 and early 1944, when the wartime alliance with the Soviet Union was at its height and Stalin was held in highest esteem in Britain, among both the people and intelligentsia. Not surprisingly, it was initially rejected by both British and American publishers, and the publication of it was thus delayed. When it did appear, it became a great commercial success, however, probably not least due to the soon to follow Cold War. The work is generally considered one of the best and most influential literary productions of the 20th century. The original subtitle "A Fairy Story" was dropped when the book was published in the United States, and all but one of the translations omitted it

        Animal Farm: A Fairy Story

Secker & Warburg London: Secker & Warburg. 1945. Second edition, printed in the same month and year as the first edition (August, 1945). Green cloth, stamped white spine title. Contemporary owner's gift inscription neatly penned on front fly verso, minimal foxing, else near fine in an about very good dustwrapper with extremities worn, short tears and creases. A brilliant, classic anti-utopian short novel, in which a cast of barnyard animals reenact the events of the Russian Revolution and the betrayal of its more humane elements by Stalin. Well-adapted both as a 1955 cartoon and a 1999 cable movie using the latest animal-special effects, though both versions added upbeat endings to Orwell's harrowing vision. A presentable copy. Autograph Letter Signed ("John") to Burgess Meredith and Paulette Goddard, from Cuernavaca, regarding the filming of THE PEARL, and other matters

Hotel Marik, Cuernavaca, Mexico, "june - (toward the front)", [1945]. 11 x 8-1/2 inches. One page in ink on recto of a single sheet ruled note paper. Very good. From the Estate of Burgess Meredith . UNPUBLISHED letter written from Cuernavaca, while Steinbeck was in Mexico "riding herd" on the shooting of the film version of THE PEARL Dear Buzzy and Paulette: I've forgotten where you live. I've forgotten Milly's [i.e., LEWIS MILESTONE'S] street number too but at least I remember his street. We don't live at the hotel but we get our mail there. I know Paulette knows the place. We have a little house with a big garden about half a mile from the plaza - very pleasant. Will be here until October I guess. We don't start shooting [THE PEARL] until August. I don't suppose there is much chance of your coming down after you finish the Chambermaid [ Meredith's DIARY OF A CHAMBERMAID]. Blumey was asking about you the other night when we were in town. We're getting lots of sun and oddly enough a lot of work done, a thing I can hardly believe. I wonder how your film ["Diary of A Chambermaid"] goes. I have some ideas for the future - too many but perhaps worth discussing some time. Tom grows like a bloody weed. He is so black we will have trouble getting him into a hotel in Georgia. And he is very strong and no intellectual company whatever. Gwyn thrives here. Anyway, we'll see our picture through here and then go on to New York in October and after that we have no plans. ... The grapevine has nice things to say about your picture. And Renoir is a great man. I've always wanted to work with him. The rains are just starting here and the fine big clouds all day. It's pretty wonderful. Please give our love to Kendal and Milly. And to yourselves. JOHN" [with:] Telegram from Steinbeck's wife Gwendolyn in New York, to Burgess Meredith in Monterey, Calif., conveying Steinbeck's address in Cuernavaca: "Dear Buzz, John is in Mexico Address Hotel Marik Cuernavaca Mor.
