Belle lettre autographe signée adressée à Jules Lefranc au sujet des desssins à la plume.

1118 - 1 feuillet d'ephémeride, 118 x 255 mm, encre noire.

Proclamation The Allied Armies, Through Sacrafice and Devotion and with God's Help, Have Wrung from Germany a Final and Unconditional Surrender.

Washington 1945 - A Proclamation of German Surrender Signed by Truman Harry S. Truman A Proclamation of German Surrender, Signed. One page printed document, signed. Broadside on wove paper. Measures 21 3/8" x 14 3/8". ( Matted to an overall size of 24" x 30".) Washington, May 8, 1945. Gothic types with roman, heading, title, and incipit, text in two columns, printed in black with gold, red and blue. A multicolored lithograph of President Truman's proclamation of May 13, 1945, as a day of prayer following the end of the war in Europe. In full: "The Allied armies, through sacrifice and devotion and with God's help, have wrung from Germany a final and unconditional surrender. The western world has been freed of the evil forces which for five years and longer have imprisoned the bodies and broken the lives of millions upon millions of free-born men. They have violated their churches, destroyed their homes, corrupted their children, and murdered their loved ones. Our Armies of Liberation have restored freedom to these suffering peoples, whose spirit and will the oppressors could never enslave. Much remains to be done. The victory won in the West must now be won in the East. The whole world must be cleansed of the evil from which half the world has been freed. United, the peace-loving nations have demonstrated in the West that their arms are stronger by far than the might of dictators or the tyranny of military cliques that once called us soft and weak. The power of our peoples to defend themselves against all enemies will be proved in the Pacific was as it has been proved in Europe. For the triumph of spirit and of arms which we have won, and of its promise to peoples everywhere who join us in the love of freedom, it is fitting that we, as a nation, give thanks to Almighty God, Who has strengthened us and given us the victory. Now, therefore, I, Harry S. Truman, President of the United States of America, do hereby appoint Sunday, May 13, 1945 to be a day of prayer. I call upon the people of the United States, whatever their faith, to unite in offering joyful thanks to God for the victory we have won and to pray that He will support us to the end of our present struggle and guide us into the ways of peace. I also call upon my countrymen to dedicate this day of prayer to the memory of those who have given their lives to make possible our victory. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States of America to be affixed." President Truman read this proclamation at a news conference held in his office at the White House at 8:35 A.M. on Tuesday, May 8, 1945. His wife and daughter, members of his Cabinet, high ranking United States and British Army and Navy officials, and Congressional leaders were grouped in chairs around the President's desk. Before reading the proclamation, President Truman said, "This is a solemn but glorious hour. General Eisenhower informs me that the forces of Germany have surrendered to the United Nations. The flags of freedom fly all over Europe. It's celebrating my birthday, too -- today, too." Reporters responded with shouts of "Happy Birthday, Mr. President." As he was reading the proclamation, he stopped after certain passages to comment. After ".The victory won in the West must now be won in the East." he said, "I want that emphasized time after time, that we are only half through." After ".the tyranny of military cliques that once called us soft and weak." Truman commented, "I would like to know what the Germans think about that now." After proclaiming the day of prayer, he added, "And it's exceedingly fitting that it is Mother's Day, too." Reproduction of the original that Truman gave out to 100 people on Christmas.         1945-1956 Collection of San Francisco Opera Company Inscribed Photographs of Stars and Founder Gaetano Merola to the President of the Opera Association

San Francisco California: San Francisco Opera Association, 1945. Collection includes: A framed black and white portrait photograph by A. Laviosa of New York with their studio stamp of Gaetano Merola (1881-1953), dynamic founder of this opera company, warmly inscribed below the photograph on the mount to Kenneth Monteagle and his wife Lucille in 1946 in "...remembrance of our pleasant association with appreciation and friendship..."; with a group of 15 framed black and white professional press photographs by various studios, inscribed by each opera star to Monteagle, including: George Cehanovsky, Paul Breisach, Pietro Cimara, Charles Kullman, Giuseppe Valdengo, Herta Glaz, Florence Quartararo, Sara Menkes, Set Svanholm, Kurt Baum and others; with 2 similar additional press photographs, unsigned and unidentified; and 8 older large format studio portraits, perhaps of Mrs. Monteagle and of herself and admirers, with one being a colorized print from Iral Hills Studio 5th Ave. New York; Kenneth Monteagle (1891-1973) was a member of a prominent San Francisco family and former president of both the San Francisco Opera Association and the Symphony Association. (1973 Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA obituary); Merola portrait larger format, with a very large mount-matting, 18 1/4" x 13 1/2" size framed and lacking its glass - right side of photograph with white powder residue, mount cardstock darkened, soiled, inscription clear; most of the opera stars' portrait frames with their glass, most of the signatures and sentiments legible and decipherable, some wear and rubbing to the plain black wooden frames; an interesting collection, a glimpse into the post-Second World War world of opera, at a time of formation, growth and vibrancy for this eminent American opera company and its founder. . Framed. Good.

DOWN AND OUT IN PARIS AND LONDON.

Harper & Brothers. New York. 1945 - FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. 8vo. (8.4 x 5.9 inches). Very good clean, fresh copy in in original purple cloth with darker purple wide lines and lettering to the spine and publishers device to the front board. In the very good original dustwrapper with a wonderful design printed in black and white on a green background. Price of $2.50 still intact on the inner front flap. Some light chipping to the very top and bottom of spine and panel edges. Slightly thumbed but overall a better than very good example of this fragile dustwrapper. The same black and white on green wrapper design is reproduced on the endpapers. All in all a superior copy of this classic of twentieth century literature. Down and out was Orwell's first book and was not well received in the US where despite only 1750 copies being published, some six months after the UK edition, 383 were later remaindered.         AS WE REMEMBER JOE

Cambridge: Privately Printed, designed and printed at the University Press, 1945. VERY SCARCE. INSCRIBED BY JOHN F. KENNEDY. First edition, first issue with the Wings insignia printed in dark red on the title-page, very limited printing of probably 250 copies such. Extensively illustrated with black and white photographs, letter facsimiles and a colour reproduction of the Navy Cross. 8vo, in the original burgundy cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and gilt lettered within a gilt ruled border within a black cloth box on the upper cover. xi, 75, with printers colophon on verso of page 75. A very handsome copy of this very scarce work, the cloth is fresh and bright, internally solid with fresh paper, hinges fine and well cared for, with an inscription as noted below providing more of an interesting history then being a distraction. With a rare genuine period signature by the future President. BOLDLY INSCRIBED BY THE FUTURE PRESIDENT. VERY SCARCE, THE RAREST OF ALL JOHN F. KENNEDY RELATED BOOKS AND WITH VERY EARLY PUBLISHED WRITINGS BY THE FUTURE PRESIDENT. Privately printed and limited, the work is known in two issue states. This is the first state with the title page printed in black and red. It is estimated that there were roughly 250 copies printed such. The second state was printed with the title page all in black. While 500 copies in total was the official printing record, it is believed that the actual print count was only 360. AS WE REMEMBER JOE was privately printed by the Kennedy family as a memorial to Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., John F.’s elder brother who was killed in action during World War II. It was to provide a remembrance for family, friends and a few important associates. In content, AS WE REMEMBER JOE is a collection of essays or writings by various persons concerning Joe Kennedy. It was only John Kennedy’s second book (after WHY ENGLAND SLEPT in 1940) and it includes a forward by him and his very touching essay, MY BROTHER JOE. It also includes a short essay by his youngest brother Teddy, who was only 12 years old at the time. Teddy had convinced his brother John and sister Eunice to allow him to submit a story about a sailing race in which he accompanied Joe and where Joe, “seized me by the pant and through me into the cold water.”. With all of the youngest Kennedy’s spelling and punctuation errors intact it is a very sweet and touching addition. With the death of Joe Kennedy in 1944 his brother John F. Kennedy assumed the responsibilities and stature expected of an eldest son in the Kennedy family. This change in family position no doubt affected him for the rest of his life, greatly influencing his career in public service and leading 15 years later to the White House.

        Caresses et Blasphèmes

Paris: Impr. de J. Haumont (1945). 34pp - Paris: Impr. de J. Haumont (1945). 34pp. Sir Coleridge Arthur Fitzroy Kennard (1885-1948) was educated at Eton and circulated in Oscar Wilde's milieu (his mother financed the Epstein memorial for him at Pere Lachaise). He was also a great friend of Ronald Firbank and Vyvyan Holland and for many years was Firbank's most ardent supporter and literary confidant. One of several publications issued during his lifetime and surely one of the the oddest- it might be argued that the book is in fact a spoof, created by a third party, to denigrate Kennard or bring amusement to others. The poems herein, all in English, are erotic to some extent, a number quite homoerotic: "O! let me calm/ Your fevered blood / Quick! Let me drink,/ Deep in the chasm,/ The growing flood/ Of your vast spasm! One of 380 numbered copies, finely printed on Johannot, cream wrappers lightly worn.Rare. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Fortunately he's a great lover of cats

1945. Sheet size: 177 × 197 mm. Pen and ink on wove paper. The cat thrower with an overslip. Signed Nicolas Bentley and dated "45". The chairman murmurs sympathetically to another man on the platform, as the prospective Conservative candidate hurls a dead cat back into the riotous crowd. The General Election of 1945 was a surprise defeat for the Conservative party. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

        Eight Gouache Paintings by Winslade

      - [Still life with wine glass, grapes and cigar] Gouache on paper, a detailed and yet expressive sketch (14cm x 10 cm). [Medieval Parade]. Gouache on board, a highly stylised, colourful procession of lords, ladies, servants and jesters following a cook bearing a boar's head. Pencil sketch on reverse shows a humorous impression of castle entrance (13 x 34 cm).Christmas Scenes: [Shepherd with star] Gouache on board (21.5 x 8.5 cm). Slightly marked. [Three shepherds with star] A particularly arresting composition, a fine example of Winslade's talent in evoking landscape; the shepherds, lit by moonlight, look towards Bethlehem. Gouache on board (11 x 28.5 cm). [Greetings for 1945-6] A dove of peace flying towards a golden sun provides an optimistic subject. Gouache on board, with Winslade's distinctive signature (14 x 11cm). [Madonna and child] Gouache on board, (24 x 14.5 cm).Fairytale romance: [Prince and princess I]. Two figures shown in dramatic black and slate grey on a pink background. Gouache on board (24 x 14 cm). [Prince and princess II]. A precise and complete working sketch for the above. Gouache on paper (20.5 x 11cm) Winslade was an accomplished twentieth century illustrator, known only by his surname. His work was frequently commissioned by major publishing houses for popular children's books. Examples can be seen in the Picken series (e.g. Picken's Great Adventure, OUP 1948); Ruthless Roger by Geoffrey Lowis (Methuen & Co, 1946) and The New Forest series (e.g. New Forest Adventure by Stephen Mogridge, Thomas Nelson & Sons, 1953). He was also a cartoonist and draftsman. During the war he served in the R.A.F., and documented his companions in caricature. The following paintings are typical of Winslade's work during the peak of his powers in the 1940s.

DEUTSCHE KONZENTRATIONS UND GEFANGENENLAGER: WAS DIE AMERIKANISCHEN UND BRITISCHEN ARMEEN VORFANDEN, APRIL 1945

[Germany; No Publisher],. 1945. Original Wrappers. 4to. [32] pages. 30 cm. First edition. In German. “German Concentration camps and camp inmates: what the American and British armies encountered, April 1945.” Immediate post-war publication containing dozens of photographs from Dachau and Buchenwald upon liberation. Includes the famous and controversial photo of Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel in Buchenwald (first published in the New York Times on May 6, 1945 with the caption “Crowded Bunks in the Prison Camp at Buchenwald” and taken inside Block 56 by Private H. Miller of the Civil Affairs Branch of the U. S. Army Signal Corps on April 16, 1945.) . Also presents photographs of victims of the gas chambers and atrocities, surviving inmates, including an interned American soldier, German civilians and SS performing the task of handling the bodies of those left in mass graves, general Eisenhower and Patton observing a camp inmate describe the types of tortures undergone, etc. Appears to be a parallel edition to to the slightly more common but similar 28 page work, “KZ – Bildbericht aus fünf Konzentrationslagern, ” which has 19 copies listed on OCLC/Worldcat (this work is held by only 13 libraries) . The more common “KZ…, ” which is a kind of sibling title to this, also from 1945, shows no photos from Dachau but rather depicts Buchenwald, Belsen, Gardelegen, Nordhausen and Ohrdurf. The aim of publishing these photobooks was to show the German population the horror of the death camps in Germany; because it was hardly a book people wanted to keep around, few copies remain today. The photos in these booklets played an important role as evidence in the Nuremberg Trials and became the iconic images of the Holocaust to Millions around the globe. Probably the first publication of war crimes photos in postwar Germany. ( For more info, see: Cornelia Brink, “Ikonen der Vernichtung. Öffentlicher Gebrauch von Fotografien aus nationalsocialistischen Konzentrationslagern nach 1945.” Berlin, 1998. Akademia Verlag. ) Subjects: Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) - Pictorial works. World War, 1939-1945 - Atrocities. Concentration camps - Germany. Buchenwald (Concentration camp) Dachau (Concentration camp) . OCLC lists 13 copies worldwide. Understandably, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum keeps their copy in their Rare Book Room. Small institutional sticker in corner of cover, spine rebacked, Light wear, otherwise Very Good Condition. (HOLO2-105-14). .
