        As We May Think

Boston, Massachusetts: The Atlantic Monthly Company, 1945. First Edition. Wrappers. Very Good. [1]-129,[5] pages. Entire issued offered, The Atlantic Monthly, Volume 176, No. 1. The Subscriber's Issue. Small 4to. A bright copy with some foxing to the last few pages and the top of the first leaf. Spine panel is brittle with several small areas of paper loss. Usual creases near the spine on the front and rear covers. Vannevar Bush's article in this volume, 'As We May Think' (found on pages 101-108) is important in the history of computing as it anticipates hypertext, the internet, and online encyclopedias. 'Bush's article describes his proposed Memex system for organizing, storing, retrieving, and linking information. Inspired by microfilm technology-which in 1945 represented the most advanced means of storing large amounts of information-Bush conceived of the Memex as consisting of a desk equipped with projection screens, buttons and levers, a keyboard, and a storage system designed to provide instant access to microfilmed books, periodicals, documents, photographs, etc. The Memex system would allow pieces of data to be linked into permanent 'information trails' dictated by the individual user's needs, which could be called up again and modified at any future date...Only after the development of the personal computer and hyperlinks on the World Wide Web was Bush's paper resurrected as a remarkably early expression of ideas that were eventually realized in a different way on the Internet.(Origins of Cyberspace 519).' The article is remarkably clairvoyant about the world we live in today hyperlinks, Google, even Wikipedia are all examples of the mechanical world implemented in software via the internet today. A very important paper, so much so that there was a research symposium held at MIT with pioneers such as Tim Berners-Lee and Nicholas Negroponte speaking about this articles impact on their lives and work.

(Bénézit, I, 639). Infimes usures à l'étui. Livres

        Hierusalem

(England, c. 1945-1950). 12mo. (11)pp. An illuminated manuscript by the noted English calligrapher and illuminator Graily Hewitt, who, together with Edward Johnston, led the revival of the art of calligraphy at the turn of the 20th century. The calligraphed text is the hymn "Jerusalem, My Happy Home," the first known record of which appears in a 16th-century manuscript held by the British Museum and was thought to be inspired by the Meditations of St. Augustine. The manuscript opens with the title in red, and features initials in blue, red and gilt, and the gilt. Each page has eight lines, representing a full stanza of the hymn. A pencil note on the endleaf states: "Written out and gilded by Graily Hewitt. Bound by A. V. Hughes," and gives the approximate date. Very fine in quarter brown calf and tan paper-covered boards, with the title hand-lettered to the front cover.

        LITTLE FRIEND, LITTLE FRIEND

New York: Dial Press 1945 New York: Dial Press, 1945. 1st edition, full black cloth, with printed dust jacket. Specially signed and inscribed by poet John Berryman on the FEP. The inscription by Berryman is to "Mary Jane" (Christenson Heming). The inscription reads "Congratulations! / & love / John" and is dated "7 Apr 1947" in black fountain pen ink. We acquired the book from another source indirectly from Mary's family, with the story that Mary had been one of Berryman's girl friends, and that Berryman had once said (in print, apparently) that she had "the most beautiful breasts in the world." The book JOHN BERRYMAN AND THE THIRTIES: A MEMOIR by Ernest Milton Halliday refers to the love affair of Berryman and Heming. A poignant association by Berryman wanting to give a copy of Jarrell's book (a poet whom he greatly admired) as a special gift for some accomplishment in Mary's life. Berryman and Jarrell had been friends since the early years of their careers. Their first book appearances were together in James Laughlin's FIVE YOUNG AMERICAN POETS (New Directions, 1940) along with three other poets. A few years later Berryman wrote a powerful review of Jarrell's POETRY AND THE AGE (Knopf, 1953) that appeared in THE NEW REPUBLIC (November 2, 1953) and later reprinted in the tribute RANDALL JARRELL: 1914-1965 (Farrar Straus Giroux, 1967) edited by Robert Lowell, et al. Upon his death, Berryman wrote "Jarrell's death hit me very hard . . . we were friends for a very long time." The present offering shows gentle wear and sunning to cloth along edges, the book is otherwise near fine. The worn and torn dust jacket is missing several pieces. Photo images available upon request. A unique copy.

Publisher's red cloth in titled in burgundy to the spine, in original paper wrapper. The book is extremely bright and clean, and appears to be unread.         Sequential Analysis of Statistical Data: Theory [with] Sequential Tests of Statistical Significance [with] Sequential Analysis of Statistical Data: Applications.Washington: National Defense Research Committee, 1943-1944. All three first editions, first issue..

An exceptional set of the three classified reports in which Wald's groundbreaking work was first announced. About Wald's later journal paper from 1945 Kotz and Johnson write in their 'Breakthroughs in Statistics': "Probability theory came of age with the advent of Kolmogorov's axiomatics in 1933 and the subsequent developments in limit theorems and stochastic processes. Statistical inference came of age with the advent of the Neyman-Pearson theory in 1933 and the subsequent formalization of hypothesis testing, estimation, and decision theory. In the present paper, Wald unified the two seemingly dissimilar areas most elegantly. To probabilists, he offered gems of new results in random walks, martingales, stochastic processes, and limit theorems. He also pointed out indirectly how they can seek probability questions from statistical inference and use the latter area as a testing ground for their abstract theorems. To statisticians, he showed that statistical inference is not just the analysis or 'significance' of an existing body of data; it also entails their entry into the very process of experimentation and continual analysis of the data as they come available. The sequential probability ratio test embodies this aspect. Wald also showed them how results from 'pure' mathematics, particularly probability theory, can be adapted to put statistical inference, in general, on stronger footing without losing sight of its practical nature. ... Wald's theoretical results first appeared in a 'restricted' report in September 1943 [first reprt offered], and a companion report on applications by H.A. Freeman appeared in July 1944 [third report offered]. The term restricted meant that the Defense Department considered the results significantly important to the war effort and, therefore, decided not to disseminate them to the general public for a while. Nevertheless, a 10-page synopsis of Wald's results, entitled 'Sequential Tests of Statistical Significance' [second report offered], was allowed to be circulated as a memorandum in April 1944 to a select group of individuals including some statisticians who are well known today: R.E. Bechhofer, J. Berkson, G.W. Brown, J.H. Curtiss, G.B. Dantzig, W.E. Deming, H.F. Dodge, J.L. Doob, B. Epstein, W. Feller, F.E. Grubbs, S. Kullback, J. Neyman, E.G. Olds, H. Scheffé, J.W. Tukey, J. von Neumann, and S.S. Wilks in the United States, and G.A. Barnard, M.S. M.S. Bartlett, R.A. Fisher, J.O. Irwin, E.S. Pearson, E.J.G. Pitman, R.L. Plackett, and F. Yates in Great Britain." <b>Thus, a complete set of the original reports pre-dating Wald's journal paper <i>Sequential Tests of Statistical Hypotheses</i> first published in The Annals of Mathematical Statistics, June 1945</b>.. First report: Small 4to (230 x 180 mm), original printed wrappers. Upper right corner with a slight bump. Previous owners initials to front wrapper W.L.D. Stamped RESTRICTED. Original ring binder containing the six sections in original printed wrappers together with the two appendicies, aslo in wrappers: [S1:VIII,16]; [S2:II,22]; [S3:II,22]; [S4:II,22]; [S5:II,18]; [S6:II,18]; [A1:II,14]; [A2:II,22] pp. In very good condition. Also included is the mimiographed distribution list of the third report: 1 sheet typescript, printed on both sides.         The Crack-Up

New York: New Directions, 1945. First edition, first printing. Octavo. In very good condition, lacking the dust jacket. Inscribed by Edmund Wilson, who served as editor to this posthumous Fitzgerald work, "To Frangeon L. Jones with the best regards of Edmund Wilson Peterborough Aug. 16, 1964". Laid into the book is the newspaper article from August 17,1964 regarding Edmund Wilson&#39;s presentation of the Edward MacDowell Medal at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. The Crack-Up tells the story of Fitzgerald&#39;s sudden descent at the age of thirty-nine from glamorous success to empty despair, and his determined recovery. Contains letters to and from Gertrude Stein, Edith Wharton, T.S. Eliot and John Dos Passos. Of course all life is a process of breaking down ...." So begins a collection of essays which can be seen as a reflection of the low point of Fitzgerald&#39;s career. Indeed, the essays were poorly received when first published in Esquire magazine in 1936, and many were critical of his personal revelations. Nonetheless, their popular has resurged and "[t]he essays stand today as a compelling psychological portrait and an illustration of an important Fitzgerald theme." (Tracy Simmons)

Plakat - Gesellschaft Schweiz-Sowjetunion.

1200 gr.
