LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN [PÉCHÉ MORTEL] (1945)

20th Century Fox 1945 - Vintage original 47 x 63" (120 x 160 cm.) grand affiché poster, France. Gene Tierney, Cornel Wilde, Jeanne Crain, Vincent Price, Mary Phillips, dir: John M. Stahl; Twentieth Century Fox. A spectacular presentation for the French release of this classic noir, based on Ben Ames Williams novel. It is one of the few of this genre made in brilliant Technicolor and won the Academy Award for Color Photography. A writer meets a socialite on a train and falls in love with her. She proves to be unreasonably possessive and obsessive over him, so much so that it ruins her relationship with him and with everyone in her life.Tierney was never more stunningly photographed, and her seemingly sweet (yet cold), cunning and manipulative characterization (perhaps one of the finest "femme fatale" characters of all time) of Ellen Berent Harland won her an Academy Award nomination. This poster art is by Georges Dastor. The U.S. posters are very pretty, but this very rare French original reflects so well the mad obsessiveness of Gene Tierney's character. On linen, there has been normal touch-up along fold lines and to address one marginal tack hole, NEAR FINE.

Autograph Letter Signed ?Woody Guthrie? 7.5? x 9.5?, 2 p to Moe Asch & others, October 8, 1945, Scott Field, Illinios. Very Fine.Fantastic ALS to Asch from Scott Field where Woody was stationed on October 8, 1945 reads, "Dear Moe, Marion, Herb, Harris, Pop and Union Square in general, I know how it is to have north wind blow cold and pile snow in under your door. I never had a door that didn't leak snow. The air strip here is on the north from up where the wind is born and it hits my barracks and my bed first of all the other ones down here. Marjorie says she has dropped in on you a few times. I'm glad, she said that she got a look at the cover of American Document # One. She said that she likes it. I thought I would get a two week furlough before I get sent on to my next job for the army. Instead I'm getting out on account of so many wives and kids. Some time around December. (then I can hit you up for work. I'll be a real genuine legal World War Two veteran.)

Commercial and Library Atlas of the World. Containing One Hundred Double Page Maps and One Hundred Inset Maps

G W Bacon & Co. Hardcover. This is a large and scarce volume, it warrants a full and detailed description, please read all of it to be fully informed. The book has been photographically documented with all 100 maps present and photographed, also the exterior, internals and any damage mentioned has also been photographically recorded and is available at request. Starting with the exterior, the base level corners are buckled, all edges are rubbed heavily with splits to both the cloth of the open edges and the leather of the corner caps. The spine has been re-wrapped with a leather reinforcement - this has worn fairly heavily and is rippled on the front edge where is is partially unstuck. It does however remain very strong. The spine reinforcement has caused the initial pages to be slightly mis-aligned without significant effect other than making opening the volume initially uneven. As a general description of the interior, there are no structural issues, the outer gilt edging is a little tarnished and the pages are clean with a light edge tone, all indexing tabs are present and age-soiled. There is no owner's mark, but this volume is believed to have belonged to a Member of the British 8th Army during the Second World War, there are 9 maps through the volume (which will be mentioned in detail) that have had some military information added to them including dates, troop movements, battle lines and where leave was taken, through France and Italy. Should you wish to see any of the pictures or ask any further questions about this doubly collectable piece, please do not hesitate to ask. Additional detailed information - (maps not mentioned can be considered to meet the general description): Map 9 - Slight tear at the index tab. Map 10 - Slight tear at the index tab.         This Hunger (limited edition of 50)

New York: Gemor Press, 1945 New York: Gemor Press, 1945. First Edition. Signed by Nin and by illustrator "Ian Hugo", that being also her first husband, Hugh Parker Guiller. #28 of the very short limited edition of 50 (not the simultaneous edition of 1,000 copies) with color wood block prints, uncut etruria paper, and numbering-with-signature by Nin. Octavo, 185 pp. through the last wood block print, followed by the limitation page and endpapers. Some soiling to covers (cleanable, but I won't do that), light toning to the interior, some foxing opposite the hand-executed color wood block prints. In addition to being one of fifty now-apparently quite-rare copies of the shorter limited run, this copy was signed and inscribed by Hugo on the ffep, "To Leo Katz, with the admiration and appreciation of Ian Hugo", in hand print, not script (see scans). Depending on which Leo Katz that may have been - presumably the one who wrote the foreword to Hugo's "New Eyes On The Art Of Engraving", in which case affording some association status as well. Verso of the ffep has the penned words, "Leo Katz Art Library / August 1953". Presumably also deaccessioned from the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences, those words appearing on the title page. I haven't read The Hunger, but it concerns several adventurous women; and it might - I don't know - stem from Nin's noted diary statement:"Oh, God, I know no joy as great as a moment of rushing into a new love, no ecstasy like that of a new love. I swim in the sky; I float; my body is full of flowers, flowers with fingers giving me acute, acute caresses, sparks, jewels, quivers of joy, dizziness, such dizziness. Music inside of one, drunkenness. Only closing the eyes and remembering, and the hunger, the hunger for more, more, the great hunger, the voracious hunger, and thirst." All in all, about as collectible a Nin piece as one could seek. L17

The Open Society and its Enemies

London: George Routledge & Sons, Ltd,, 1945. Volume I The Spell of Plato. [Volume II The High Tide of Prophecy: Hegel, Marx, and the Aftermath]. 2 volumes, octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spines gilt. With the dust jackets. Extremities a little rubbed, a couple of minor bumps and nicks to top edges of boards, short split to head of rear joint of Volume II. An excellent, bright, set in chipped and tanned jackets, Volume I with tape repairs to the verso. First edition, first impression, of the author's influential first book. Popper's classic debut contains within its analysis the seeds of his groundbreaking, if somewhat idiosyncratic, new methodology of inductive reasoning. In The Open Society and Its Enemies he traces, analyses, and refutes theories of historicism, or the idea that history progresses inexorably according to a series of laws. Beginning with Plato, he proceeds to Hegel and Marx, ultimately arguing that historicism is founded on a misunderstanding of scientific principles and that it usually forms the philosophical foundations of totalitarian regimes. Scarce in this condition.

LITTLE FRIEND, LITTLE FRIEND with his most famous poem in his hand

Dial Press, New York 1945 - His second book published in an edition of 2000 copies. INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper for Dorothea Garritson and SIGNED by the poet below Jarrell's handwritten poem, the last poem of the book and perhaps his best known, "The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner," with its famous last line: "When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose." In his review of this book Robert Lowell said it "contains some of the best poems on modern war, better, I think, and far more professional than those of Wilfred Owen, which, though they seem pathetically eternal to us now, are sometimes amateurish and unfinished. The determined, passive, sacrificial lives of the pilots, inwardly so harmless and outwardly so destructive, are ideal subjects for Jarrell" ("With Wild Dogmatism," NEW YORK TIMES, 7 October 1951). Slight uneven sunning to the boards from the missing sections of the dustwrapper. Near Fine in a Fair dustwrapper lacking most of the spine and with a few small tears and chips [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

From there he was sent as delegate to the Nuremberg trials as an observer, He was the youngest (19) journalist present and was given special access to witness the executions of von Ribbentrop, Keitel, and others.
