New York: Dial Press, 1945. 1st edition, full black cloth, with printed dust jacket. Specially signed and inscribed by poet John Berryman on the FEP. The inscription by Berryman is to "Mary Jane" (Christenson Heming). The inscription reads "Congratulations! / & love / John" and is dated "7 Apr 1947" in black fountain pen ink. We acquired the book from another source indirectly from Mary's family, with the story that Mary had been one of Berryman's girl friends, and that Berryman had once said (in print, apparently) that she had "the most beautiful breasts in the world." The book JOHN BERRYMAN AND THE THIRTIES: A MEMOIR by Ernest Milton Halliday refers to the love affair of Berryman and Heming. A poignant association by Berryman wanting to give a copy of Jarrell's book (a poet whom he greatly admired) as a special gift for some accomplishment in Mary's life. Berryman and Jarrell had been friends since the early years of their careers. Their first book appearances were together in James Laughlin's FIVE YOUNG AMERICAN POETS (New Directions, 1940) along with three other poets. A few years later Berryman wrote a powerful review of Jarrell's POETRY AND THE AGE (Knopf, 1953) that appeared in THE NEW REPUBLIC (November 2, 1953) and later reprinted in the tribute RANDALL JARRELL: 1914-1965 (Farrar Straus Giroux, 1967) edited by Robert Lowell, et al. Upon his death, Berryman wrote "Jarrell's death hit me very hard . . . we were friends for a very long time." The present offering shows gentle wear and sunning to cloth along edges, the book is otherwise near fine. The worn and torn dust jacket is missing several pieces. Photo images available upon request. A unique copy.

Lark Rise to Candleford. A Trilogy

Oxford University Press 1945, 1945. Classic novel of rural Victorian life. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Basis for the acclaimed BBC television serial. Publisher's red cloth in titled in burgundy to the spine, in original paper wrapper. The book is extremely bright and clean, and appears to be unread. The jacket is printed on cheap, lightweight wartime paperstock and is often heavily chipped and damaged; this is a superior example with just a couple of short tears, some gentle toning to the spine, and a shallow loss to the crown. A most attactive copy.

Sequential Analysis of Statistical Data: Theory [with] Sequential Tests of Statistical Significance [with] Sequential Analysis of Statistical Data: Applications.Washington: National Defense Research Committee, 1943-1944. All three first editions, first issue..

An exceptional set of the three classified reports in which Wald's groundbreaking work was first announced. About Wald's later journal paper from 1945 Kotz and Johnson write in their 'Breakthroughs in Statistics': "Probability theory came of age with the advent of Kolmogorov's axiomatics in 1933 and the subsequent developments in limit theorems and stochastic processes. Statistical inference came of age with the advent of the Neyman-Pearson theory in 1933 and the subsequent formalization of hypothesis testing, estimation, and decision theory. In the present paper, Wald unified the two seemingly dissimilar areas most elegantly. To probabilists, he offered gems of new results in random walks, martingales, stochastic processes, and limit theorems. He also pointed out indirectly how they can seek probability questions from statistical inference and use the latter area as a testing ground for their abstract theorems. To statisticians, he showed that statistical inference is not just the analysis or 'significance' of an existing body of data; it also entails their entry into the very process of experimentation and continual analysis of the data as they come available. The sequential probability ratio test embodies this aspect. Wald also showed them how results from 'pure' mathematics, particularly probability theory, can be adapted to put statistical inference, in general, on stronger footing without losing sight of its practical nature. ... Wald's theoretical results first appeared in a 'restricted' report in September 1943 [first reprt offered], and a companion report on applications by H.A. Freeman appeared in July 1944 [third report offered]. The term restricted meant that the Defense Department considered the results significantly important to the war effort and, therefore, decided not to disseminate them to the general public for a while. Nevertheless, a 10-page synopsis of Wald's results, entitled 'Sequential Tests of Statistical Significance' [second report offered], was allowed to be circulated as a memorandum in April 1944 to a select group of individuals including some statisticians who are well known today: R.E. Bechhofer, J. Berkson, G.W. Brown, J.H. Curtiss, G.B. Dantzig, W.E. Deming, H.F. Dodge, J.L. Doob, B. Epstein, W. Feller, F.E. Grubbs, S. Kullback, J. Neyman, E.G. Olds, H. Scheffé, J.W. Tukey, J. von Neumann, and S.S. Wilks in the United States, and G.A. Barnard, M.S. M.S. Bartlett, R.A. Fisher, J.O. Irwin, E.S. Pearson, E.J.G. Pitman, R.L. Plackett, and F. Yates in Great Britain." <b>Thus, a complete set of the original reports pre-dating Wald's journal paper <i>Sequential Tests of Statistical Hypotheses</i> first published in The Annals of Mathematical Statistics, June 1945</b>.. First report: Small 4to (230 x 180 mm), original printed wrappers. Upper right corner with a slight bump. Previous owners initials to front wrapper W.L.D. Stamped RESTRICTED. IX, (1)179, (3: blank) pp. Second report: 8vo (244 x 153 mm). Original printed wrappers, fine. 10, (2: blank) pp. Third report: Large 4to (285 x 220 mm). Original ring binder containing the six sections in original printed wrappers together with the two appendicies, aslo in wrappers: [S1:VIII,16]; [S2:II,22]; [S3:II,22]; [S4:II,22]; [S5:II,18]; [S6:II,18]; [A1:II,14]; [A2:II,22] pp. In very good condition. Also included is the mimiographed distribution list of the third report: 1 sheet typescript, printed on both sides. All three reports are in the rare original issue with the text: "This document contains information affecting the national defense of the United States within the meaning of the Espionage Act, 50 U.S.C., 31 and 32, as amended. Its transmission or the revelation of its contents in any manner to an unauthorized person is prohibited by law". <b>OCLC lists 8 copies of the first report, 1 of the second (National Institute of Standards and Technology), and the third report is not located in any library</b>

        The Crack-Up

New York: New Directions, 1945. First edition, first printing. Octavo. In very good condition, lacking the dust jacket. Inscribed by Edmund Wilson, who served as editor to this posthumous Fitzgerald work, "To Frangeon L. Jones with the best regards of Edmund Wilson Peterborough Aug. 16, 1964". Laid into the book is the newspaper article from August 17,1964 regarding Edmund Wilson&#39;s presentation of the Edward MacDowell Medal at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. The Crack-Up tells the story of Fitzgerald&#39;s sudden descent at the age of thirty-nine from glamorous success to empty despair, and his determined recovery. Contains letters to and from Gertrude Stein, Edith Wharton, T.S. Eliot and John Dos Passos. Of course all life is a process of breaking down ...." So begins a collection of essays which can be seen as a reflection of the low point of Fitzgerald&#39;s career. Indeed, the essays were poorly received when first published in Esquire magazine in 1936, and many were critical of his personal revelations. Nonetheless, their popular has resurged and "[t]he essays stand today as a compelling psychological portrait and an illustration of an important Fitzgerald theme." (Tracy Simmons)

Plakat - Gesellschaft Schweiz-Sowjetunion.

1200 gr.

Piraterias y Ataques Navales contra las Isla Canarias.

Madrid Instituto Jeronimo Zurita() 1945 - 3 vols. in 5. 28 x 20 cm. Original Blue Cloth with gilt back. Slightly blotchy. With numerous Illustr. and some folded Maps. - Paper bronzy, four volumes cover hinge inside broken, a few pages relaxed, Binding tight, otherwise in clean condition.       1 page. Octavo. Written from "l&#39;heure bleu" (sur le grand lac), Petichet par Laffrey, (Isère)," July 26, [1945]. In French. With integral autograph address panel (stamp intact) with Messiaen&#39;s name and address to lower right corner. & & The composer complains about the high costs of renting and transporting a piano for the summer - "200 francs rental, that&#39;s nothing. But to pay 1,500 francs for transport - plus 200 francs for loading and unloading - and to repeat this operation upon my departure, which would make a total of 3,400 francs just for transportation... this seems impossible! Next year, I will try to organize myself better..."& & Creased at central fold. Small perforations to edges, as issued. . A French composer, organist and teacher, Messiaen "was a musician apart. The sources of his music may be traced on the one hand to the French organ tradition and on the other to the innovations of Debussy, Stravinsky and Bartók, but right at the start of his career he found a modal system that has a completely individual sound, and to this he remained true, even when he vastly extended the possibilities of his style after World War II. He was alone, too, among major 20th-century composers in his joyously held Catholic faith, which again was unswerving, however much he came to value non-European cultures, especially Indian and Japanese. As a teacher he instructed many of the most prominent composers of the next two generations..."       - Complete set of cancelled royalty checks made out by editor Donald Allen to 44 authors who appeared in the landmark poetry anthology THE NEW AMERICAN POETRY: 1945-1960, all SIGNED on the verso by the individual authors. In addition to his check, which he endorsed on the wrong end, Kerouac has written "For Sterling Lord Agency to re-process." The check for James Schuyler has been SIGNED by him as well as by his lover, artist Fairfield Porter. Denise Levertov has SIGNED both her maiden and married names. Many like Lew Welch, Philip Whalen, and Brother Antonius have added their addresses or an endorsement. Along with a TYPED NOTE SIGNED by Donald Allen and dated 1998 explaining the contract he signed with Grove Press for the anthology and how he pro-rated the royalties earned by the poets and continued to do so until the book went out of print in 1980. A very scarce collection, one of apparently only two in existence, with a fine collection of autographs of many of the important new poets of the time.

Ski Trail [Original Colour Woodcut Print on Paper]

1945, edition of 200-300. () Fine. 10.5 X 7.5 CM (4 X 3 inches) original colour woodcut print on paper. In 1.5 CM (0.6 inch) ribbed brushed gilt wooden frame with only very slight wear. Off-white acid free matting (with embossed simple embossed frame around image) and Tru Vue UV protectant conservation glass. In extremely good condition, with no fading or acid burn. Crisp, clear colours. Frame measures 37.5 X 23.5 CM (14.75 X 9.25 inches). Metal wire hanger across back. To the bottom right below the image is Phillips&#39; signature (in pencil). With Master&#39;s Gallery provenance label on back. Boulet MBL240. At least 200-300 prints were produced in 1946 as Phillips&#39; Christmas greeting card. An interesting image showing two skiers amidst the trees. The detail in the clothing and face of the closer skier provides a beautiful contrast to the simple green outlines of the trees behind. The excellent quality of framing and pristine condition makes this print especially desirable. Walter Joseph Phillips (October 25, 1884 &#150; July 5, 1963) was an English-born Canadian painter and woodcutter, acclaimed as one of Canada&#39;s most famous printmakers and for popularizing the colour woodcut in the style of the Japanese. His artistic career spanned from the 1900s through the 1940s, during which time his work was exhibited throughout North America and Great Britain. In 1940 he was asked to become a resident artist at the Banff Centre, then known as the Banff School of Fine Arts, where he played an important role in the development of their visual arts program- It&#39;s Walter Phillips Gallery, which focuses on contemporary art, is named after him. The Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta holds an extensive collection of Phillips works and a research archive..

The Postwar Speeches, a full set of jacketed first editions: The Sinews of Peace, Europe Unite, In the Balance, Stemming the Tide, and The Unwritten Alliance

Here is a superior, jacketed set of all five of Churchill's post-WWII speech volumes.  These volumes span the period from Demobilization in late 1945, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through his second Premiership (1951-1955) into a time when Churchill passes "into a living national memorial" of the time he has lived and the Nation, Empire, and free world he has served. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the onset of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb, development of the hydrogen bomb, and the beginning of the space age (to name a few).  These postwar speech volumes are much more scarce than Churchill’s War Speeches volumes; all five of these books had only a single printing each.  Moreover, collectors should note that the fifth and final volume, The Unwritten Alliance, is the last of Churchill's books published in his lifetime and was issued only in Britain, with no U.S. edition.  All five volumes offered here are near-fine volumes in jackets that range from very good plus to near-fine.  All five cloth bindings are clean and square with virtually no wear.  The contents of all five volumes are uniformly clean and tight.  We find no spotting in the set.  The only previous ownership marks in the set are confined to The Sinews of Peace front pastedown - a pencilled date of "8/48" and a tiny Oxford bookshop sticker.  The page edges show only mild soiling and age-toning.  All five dust jackets are bright, clean, and highly complete with only trivial chipping to a few spine ends.  All five dust jackets are unclipped, still bearing the original front flap prices.  Please note that Stemming the Tide has the more desirable first state dust jacket.  Stemming the Tide has a two inch closed tear and some wrinkling at the bottom of the front face, but no loss associated with this tear, which is unobtrusive beneath the dust jacket protector.  This flaw aside, the five dust jackets show only minor wear at  extremities and a few trivial imperfections in the black background color.  Dust jackets for The Unwritten Alliance were notoriously poorly printed, and consequently are almost always rubbed or streaked, with orange showing through the black background.   This example of The Unwritten Alliance has excellent spine presentation, with two vertical streaks of orange color confined the front face.  We note almost invisible closed tears near the upper front hinges of Europe Unite and The Sinews of Peace, but these two jackets are nonetheless unusually clean and complete examples.  In the Balance is likewise an unusually bright example.  Assembling full, jacketed sets in such condition has become difficult.  The dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers.  Bibliographic reference: Cohen A241.1, A246.1, A255.1, A264.1, A273; Woods/ICS A124(a), A128(a), A130(a), A137(a), A142; Langworth pages 184, 296, 301, 309, 338
