Sammlung von 90 Dossiers und Berichten der GEA [German External Assets]-Branch über Rolle und Entwicklung einzelner österreichischer Betriebe und Unternehmen nach dem Anschluß 1938 (darunter Universale Baugesellschaft, Junghans AG, Anglo Elementar sowie Erste Allgemeine Versicherung).

[Wien], [1945-49].. Typoskripte in bedruckten Originalflügelmappen, diese teils mit zeitgenöss. Stempel 'Property of the USACA'. Zusammen 90 'Reports' mit insgesamt ca. 4600 SS. Folio..

Washington D. C. : Headquarters-U.S. Army Air Forces., 1945.. Washington D. C. Headquarters-U.S. Army Air Forces. 1945. Punch and clipbound in stylized titled coloured pictorial wrappers. Thin 4to. Classified "Restricted" and marked as such on each page. The January 1945 issue. Profusely illustrated with photographs, drawings, maps, diagrams, charts, etc. The A-26, the last aircraft designated as an "attack bomber," was designed to replace the Douglas A-20 Havoc/Boston. It incorporated many improvements over the earlier Douglas designs. The first three XA-26 prototypes first flew in July 1942, and each was configured differently: Number One as a daylight bomber with a glass nose, Number Two as a gun-laden night-fighter, and Number Three as a ground-attack platform, with a 75-millimeter cannon in the nose. This final variant, eventually called the A-26B, was chosen for production.& & Upon its delivery to the 9th Air Force in Europe in November 1944 (and the Pacific Theater shortly thereafter), the A-26 became the fastest US bomber of WWII. The A-26C, with slightly-modified armament, was introduced in 1945. The A-26s combat career was cut short by the end of the war, and because no other use could be found for them, many A-26s were converted to JD-1 target tugs for the US Navy.& & A strange aircraft-designation swap occurred in 1948, when the Martin B-26 Marauder was deactivated and the Douglas A-26 was re-designated the B-26. (It kept this designation until 1962.) B-26s went on to serve extensively in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. In Vietnam, they were commonly used in the Counter-Insurgency (COIN) role, with very heavy armament and extra power. This version, the B-26K, was based in Thailand and was, to confuse things further, called the A-26 for political reasons. B-26s were also used for training, VIP transport, cargo, night reconnaissance, missile guidance and tracking, and as drone-control platforms.& & Post-war uses of the airplane included luxurious executive transport (Smith Tempo I; Tempo II and Biscayne 26; LAS Super-26; Berry Silver-Sixty; Monarch-26; On-Mark Marketeer/Marksman), aerial surveying and, most notably, firefighting, a role in which it is still occasionally used today. - warbirdalley Owners ink signature to front cover.         Pilot Training Manual for the P-47 Thunderbolt

Washington D. C. : Headquarters-U.S. Army Air Forces., 1945.. Washington D. C. Headquarters-U.S. Army Air Forces. 1945. Punch and clipbound in stylized titled coloured pictorial wrappers. Thin 4to. Classified "Restricted" and marked as such on each page. The March 1945 issue.Laid-into this manual are two Fine pamphlets:& 1. The Thunderbolt Pilot Speaks. Published by the A.C. of S.,A-2 Fighter Command. Marked "confidential".Undated but c. 1944.& & 2. Notes on the Use of Oxygen Equipment for Fighter Pilots -With Special Reference to the P-47. 46th Altitude Training Unit. Printed by the 1st Airborne EAUTC Reproduction Section. Undated, but c.1944. Profusely illustrated with photographs, drawings, maps, diagrams, charts, etc. The Thunderbolt was the most famous of all the Republic aircraft in WWII. First flown on 6 May 1941, the P-47 was designed as a (then) large, high-performance fighter/bomber, utilizing the large Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine to give it excellent performance and a large load-carrying capability. The first deliveries of the P-47 took place in June 1942, when the US Army Air Corps began flying it in the European Theater.& & Though it was an excellent airplane, several improvements were made as production continued, with each improvement adding power, maneuverability and range. As the war progressed, the Thunderbolt, or "Jug," as it was affectionately called, gained a reputation as a reliable and extremely tough airplane, able to take incredible amounts of damage and still return its pilot home safely. P-47s logged almost 2 million flight hours during the war, during which they were responsible for the destruction of over 7,000 enemy aircraft in the air and on the ground in the European Theater alone.& & Later in the war, Jugs served as escort fighters for B-29 bombers in the Pacific. Mostly, though, they excelled in the ground-attack role, strafing and bombing their way across the battlefields of Europe. Early versions of the P-47 had "razorback" fuselages, but later models (beginning near the middle of the P-47D production run) featured a bubble canopy which gave the pilot increased rearward visibility.& & P-47s were also used during the war by the air forces of Brazil, England, France, Mexico and the Soviet Union. Following the war, the Jug served for nine more years in the US, flown by the Air National Guard. It continued to serve for many additional years with the air forces of over 15 nations around the world.- warbirdalley Owners ink signature to front cover. Ink stamp of Salem Army Airdrome HQ dated 1945 to title Page and inside rear cover. Usual protrusion of metal binding pins to front and rear inside covers. 2" chip to bottom corner of front cover.       Headquarters-U.S. Army Air Forces., Revised May 1945.. Headquarters-U.S. Army Air Forces. Revised May 1945. Punch and clipbound in stylized titled coloured pictorial wrappers. Small 4to. Classified "Restricted" and marked as such on each page. Introduction by General Hap Arnold , Commanding General of the Army Air Forces Profusely illustrated with photographs, drawings, schematics, diagrams ( some fold-out ), cutaways, etc. Arguably the most famous aircraft of the Second World War the Boeing B-17 ( Flying Fortress ) was the spearhead of the American daylight bombing offensive in Europe from beginning to end , as well as serving in every other theatre of war. No single aircraft type contributed more to the defeat of the Luftwaffe, which enabled tangible expression to be given to the controversial U. S. policy for the strategic assault of Germany by day in the face of formidable political argument as well as desperate enemy opposition. Few other aircraft of the war gained the universal affection of their aircrew over so long an operational periods did the B-17 ( Green ). This manual served the dual purpose of training checklist and working handbook for B-17 pilot airplane commanders. Graphically intensive, the manual covers all aspects of the Flying Fortress from operational duties and command to construction, flight, navigation, weaponry, emergencies, etc. A very rare, highly prized memento of aviation and military. history Owners ink signature to front cover. Cet admirateur de Toulouse Lautrec et Pascin dessine la faune des champs de foire et des cirques, quand il ne s'inspire pas de l'Espagne et de la tauromachie. On lui doit les illustrations, entre autres, de Parades abolies de Pierre Mac Orlan, ainsi que de nombreux portraits d'écrivains pour des journaux littéraires; portraits qui ont été réunis en trois albums, Visages contemporains, préfacés notamment par Léon-Paul Fargue et Paul Valéry.Il meurt en 1987.         On Cumulative Sums of Random Variables" (Annals of Mathematical Statistics 15 No. 3 pp. 283 - 296, September 1944) and "Sequential Tests of Statistical Hypotheses" (Annals of Mathematical Statistics 16 No. 2 pp. 117 -186, June 1945).

      - FIRST EDITIONS IN MINT CONDITION AND IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of Abraham Wald's seminal work on sequential tests of statistical hypotheses. Before Wald, the traditional style of statistical decision was to posit a hypothesis, make a predetermined number of measurements, then make a decision whether to accept or reject the hypothesis. Wald realized that this procedure is quite wasteful, and that many measurements could be saved if given the option to decide at every step whether to continue or stop the measurement process. "According to Wald, the resulting 'sequential probability ratio test frequently results in a savings of about 50 percent in the number of observations over the most efficient test procedure based on a fixed number of observations" (Gass, An Annotated Timeline of Operations Research, 65). In these papers Wald, known now as "the father of sequential analysis and decision theory," first presents the theoretical foundations of the theory of sequential analysis. The ideas he put forth revolutionized the art of statistical testing and were later developed in the hands of computer scientists into a field known as on-line algorithms (Blom, Problems and Snapshots, 203). "Probability theory came of age with the advent of Kolmogorov's axiomatics in 1933 and the subsequent developments in limit theorems and stochastic processes. Statistical inference came of age with the advent of the Neyman-Pearson theory in 1933 and the subsequent formalization of hypothesis testing, estimation, and decision theory. In these papers, Wald elegantly unified two seemingly dissimilar areas: probability theory and statistical inference. To probabilists, he offered gems of new results in random walks, martingales, stochastic processes, and limit theorems. He also pointed out indirectly how one might seek probability questions from statistical inference, the use the latter area as a testing ground for their abstract theorems. To statisticians, Wald showed that statistical inference is not just the analysis or 'significance' of an existing body of data; it also entails their entry into the very process of experimentation and continual analysis of the data as they come available. The sequential probability ratio test embodies this aspect. Wald also showed them how results from 'pure' mathematics, particularly probability theory, can be adapted to put statistical inference, in general, on stronger footing without losing sight of its practical nature." (Kotz & Johnson: Breakthroughs in Statistics). Wald's work was conceived in 1943 at Columbia. Wald was asked by the Navy's Bureau of Ordnance if there was a sampling plan that could terminate a statistical experiment earlier than planned. Wald's theoretical results first appeared in September 1943, but in the form of a 'restricted' report, meaning that the Defense Department considered the results significantly important for the war effort and, therefore, decided not to disseminate them to the general public for a while. The report was 'declassified' in early 1945, thereby allowing the present paper to appear in June of that year. Interestingly enough, Wald had already (in his paper 'On Cumulative Sums of Random Variables' from 1944 and also offered here), published many of the mathematical foundations of sequential procedures without any mention of the word sequential or any reference to his 1943 report, as the protocol called for. 4to. 10 X 7 inches (250 x 175mm). Each issue is bound in original blue wraps and is in mint condition in every way.

        Supplement One: The American Language

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1945 New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1945. First. First edition. Fine in modestly age-toned, near fine dustwrapper with a short tear at one fold. Nicely Inscribed by the author to an important literary editor: "My venerable colleague Bernard Smith to recall our joint sweating for art and truth. H.L. Mencken. Aug. 20, 1945." Smith was Editor-in-Chief at Knopf where he was known for editing B. Traven, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Langston Hughes, and many others. In 1947 he migrated to Hollywood where he was involved in the production of such films as How the West Was Won, Elmer Gantry, and Cheyenne Autumn. Smith shared a sometimes contentious relationship with the sharp-tongued Mencken, who once called Smith "a Jew, and moreover, a jackass." A significant association. .

Pilot Training Manual for the B-17 Flying Fortress

Headquarters-U.S. Army Air Forces., Revised May 1945. Ink stamp of Salem Army Airdrome HQ dated 1945 to title Page and inside rear cover. Usual rust offset from metal binding pins to front and rear inside covers.Binding pin protruding slightly onto front cover. Mild sporadic soiling to rear cover.Light wear to edges. A crisp, bright Very Good copy of this original, rare relic of Aviation History.

A General Account of the Development of Using Atomic Energy for Military Purposes Under the Auspices of the United States Government 1940–1945. Written at the request of Major General L. R. Groves United States Army. Publication authorized as of August 1945.

Washington D. C.: War Department, 1945 - Perfect bound with staples. Original cream morocco-patterned wrappers. "Released for publication on" printed to upper wrapper. Some rubbing and spotting to wrappers, minor abrasion to upper cover, lower staple separated from cover. Excellent condition. Rare lithoprint edition, the earliest obtainable edition of the Smyth Report, with the ownership inscription and ink stamps of the Manhattan Project's principal metallurgist Frank Foote. The Smyth Report was the official history of the Manhattan Project, a "remarkably full and candid account" (PMM) compiled by physicist Henry DeWolf Smith at the request of Major General Leslie R. Groves. The earliest edition was a mimeographed version stamped "secret" on each page, and all save one, Smyth's master copy now held at Princeton, were destroyed. The second edition was the lithoprint, of which 1,000 copies were produced to be distributed to project leaders and members of the press on August 11 and 12, just days after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The recipient of the present copy, Frank Foote (1906–1998) was a member of the Physics Group headed by Enrico Fermi and one of the Project's leading scientists, "renowned for his contribution to the Manhattan Project and to nuclear metallurgy generally" (Cahn, The Coming of Materials Science, p. 30). After the war he became Director of the Metallurgy Division at Argonne National Laboratory, where he initiated research on "highly anisotropic materials such as uranium and plutonium" that he believed "would yield insights not obtained from studies on materials of higher symmetry, and enthusiastically supported basic research on uranium and plutonium, production of pure materials etc." (International Union of Crystallography obituary). Foote, a "quiet, scholarly, kind man" was a signer of the Szilard petition, which requested that President Truman not use atomic weapons against Japan, and also became a member of Atoms for Peace. An excellent association. PMM 422e, Norman 1962
