        The Crack-Up.

New Directions, New York 1945 - First edition, first printing. Octavo, original half cloth. In very good condition, lacking the dust jacket. Inscribed by Edmund Wilson, who served as editor to this posthumous Fitzgerald work, "To Frangeon L. Jones with the best regards of Edmund Wilson Peterborough Aug. 16, 1964". Laid into the book is the newspaper article from August 17,1964 regarding Edmund Wilson's presentation of the Edward MacDowell Medal at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. he Crack-Up tells the story of Fitzgerald's sudden descent at the age of thirty-nine from glamorous success to empty despair, and his determined recovery. Contains letters to and from Gertrude Stein, Edith Wharton, T.S. Eliot and John Dos Passos." So begins a collection of essays which can be seen as a reflection of the low point of Fitzgerald's career. Indeed, the essays were poorly received when first published in Esquire magazine in 1936, and many were critical of his personal revelations. Nonetheless, their popular has resurged and "[t]he essays stand today as a compelling psychological portrait and an illustration of an important Fitzgerald theme" (Tracy Simmons).         Il Canzoniere (1900-1945).

      - Roma, Giulio Einaudi, 1945. In 8vo (cm. 20).

        WARS I HAVE SEEN. Signed.

Batsford, London 1945 - [Beaton, Cecil] Stein, Gertrude. WARS I HAVE SEEN. Signed. London: Batsford, 1945. "A nice war is a war where everybody who is heroic is a hero, and everybody more or less is a hero in a nice war". First Edition. 8vo., 191pp. Blue cloth stamped darker blue title to spine. A near fine copy in a superb, bright panorama dustwrapper illustrated by Cecil Beaton. [Bookseller's sticker at the top of the inside flap]. Inscribed in a later hand by Stein in blue fountain pen at the bottom of her Cecil Beaton frontis. portrait, to John James, an American journalist living in France to whom she inscribed a number of books: "To John James who says Ma''am so ? from Kentucky / Always / Gertrude Stein / May / 46". Stein lived until July of 1946. Probably the toughest Stein A Item to find signed & virtually impossible to find as a Presentation Copy. An extremely good example. In "Wars I Have Seen" (1945), her memoir of the Second World War, Gertrude Stein writes of the remarkable kindness of a young Frenchman named Paul Genin, the owner of a silk factory in Lyons and a country neighbor, who came to her after America entered the war and asked if she needed money. She did - the funds from America on which she and Alice B. Toklas depended no longer arrived - and he offered her a matching monthly stipend. Stein and Toklas lived on Genin's kindness for six months, after which Stein sold a Cézanne ("quite quietly to some one who came to see me") and no longer needed money. "And so I thanked Paul Genin and paid him back and he said if you ever need me just tell me, and that was that." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        The Folded Leaf

New York: Harper and Brothers. 1945. First. First edition. Fine in a presentable, about very good dustwrapper with shallow chipping at the extremities and a scrape on the spine. The author's third book, a cheaply produced wartime novel. This copy Inscribed in the year of publication to his longtime colleague, Berton Roueche, with a passage from the novel: "March, 1945. For Berton Roueche with best regards, Bill Maxwell. 'If pursued, the truth withdraws, puts on one false face after another, and finally goes underground where it can only be got at in the complex, agonizing absurdity of dreams.'" A wonderful inscription, and an important association. Dr. Roueche wrote about medicine and public health for The New Yorker in the 1940s and '50s, and was especially known for his narrative of doctors as detectives confronting mysterious illnesses and environmental health issues. His work helped to spawn a genre that has since extended to detective fiction, television, and movies. .

        Lord's Prayer

NY 1945 - A stunning original painting in ink and gouache by the renowned illustrator Arthur Szyk, signed and dated by the artist. The painting measures 7 3/4 by 5 3/4 inches, on illustration board measuring 12 by 9 1/4 inches. This illustrated Lord’s Prayer is comprised of fourteen calligraphed lines, illuminated in bright colors in the style of a medieval manuscript. Along the left margin of the page is an intricate border, incorporating portraits of people praying, including a little boy kneeling with his hands folded. A floral border extends along the bottom of the page, and tiny, delicate curls of tracery fill in the border and extend along the top edge. Szyk’s work is characterized by its minute detail, and his style is very much in the tradition of Eastern miniaturists. Szyk was born in Lodz, Poland in 1894. His artistic talents became evident at an early age, and he was sent to Paris to study at the Académie Julian when he was a teenager. He was a prolific illustrator of books, many of which were of Jewish content, including his masterpiece, The Haggadah. After World War II, Szyk moved to the United States, where he became one of the chief artists for the Limited Editions Club and contributed illustrations and caricatures to several magazines. This illustration was published in the January 1946 edition of Coronet magazine, inside the front cover. Mounted and framed. On the sheet of illustration board, around the illustration, are publisher’s notes. Two small spots of tape residue, light soiling to margins, light toning; the painting is in fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
