Esemplari in eccellenti condizioni conservative. 0

Extermination of Polish Jews Album of Pictures [Zaglada Zydostwa Polskiego Album Zdjec]

Lodz: Centralna Zydowska Komisja Historyczna W. Polsce, 1945. Lodz: Centralna Zydowska Komisja Historyczna W. Polsce, 1945. First edition. Paperback. Very Good. Lodz. 1945. The earliest photographic documentation in book form of the extermination of the Jews in Europe.& & The painfully graphic images contained in this simple book were assembled in admirable haste at the immediate end of World War II. The Central Jewish Historical Committee in Poland was compelled to preserve a record of what transpired during the German-Hitlerian occupation of that country. Dr. Filip Friedman, Director of the committee, explains in his introduction that this book was only the first of a projected series with this goal in mind. Photography, with its sense of physical immediacy, understandably presents a powerful mode in which to preserve the truth of the Holocaust. It might be surprising to learn that most of these photographs were taken by German amateurs as “keepsake” pictures; others, in secret, by Jews or Polish gentiles. All of them confirm the systematic brutality visited on one group of humans by another.& The introduction and brief explanations below each image are translated into French, Hebrew, English, Polish and Russian. The photographs themselves are arranged in a logical sequence--- numbered images 1-19 illustrated the progressive persecution of Jews during the first period of the occupation… anti-Jewish propaganda posters, beards cut, clothes torn, “shame badges” affixed, all lenient forms of ill treatment. Numbers 30-97 expose the suffering of Jews during the walled Ghetto period. Numbers 213-235 explode any remaining incredulity with the depictions of executions, mass murders, starvation in the camps, the loading and burying of corpses and the ultimate profanity---the human soap factory. The final images, in quiet rebuttal, illustrate the oppositionary movement and the fighting partisans among the Jews. An extremely rare and important visual record of the holocaust and a world that is no more.&

Light tone, date on rear pastedown, otherwise light wear. "Submitted by Milton Friedman in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Faculty of Political Science, Columbia University" on sticker at bottom of title page; "Milton Friedman Vita" sheet tipped in at rear. Solid hardcover. ; A description of the income structure of the professions of medicine, dentistry, law, accounting, and engineering during 1929-36. "[W] Allen [Wallis] went first to New Deal Washington. Largely through his efforts, I followed in the summer of 1935, working at the National Resources Committee on the design of a large consumer budget study then under way. This was one of the two principal components of my later Theory of the Consumption Function. The other came from my next job - at the National Bureau of Economic Research, where I went in the fall of 1937 to assist Simon Kuznets in his studies of professional income. The end result was our jointly published Incomes from Independent Professional Practice, which also served as my doctoral dissertation at Columbia. That book was finished by 1940, but its publication was delayed until after the war because of controversy among some Bureau directors about our conclusion that the medical profession's monopoly powers had raised substantially the incomes of physicians relative to that of dentists. More important, scientifically, that book introduced the concepts of permanent and transitory income." - Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize Autobiography. Quite uncommon first edition of this early book co-authored by two future Nobel Prize economists. ; Publications of the National Bureau of Economic Research; Vol. 45; xxxiii, 599 pages .

The Dwarf [Dvärgen] [Signed / Ingraverat]

New York: L. B. Fischer, 1945. New York: L. B. Fischer, 1945. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the first American edition (and the first edition in English translation), first printing (book modestly askew, some pushing to the spine ends, and slight rubbing to the spine ends and board corners), in an about Very Good age-toned dust jacket (some wear to the spine extremities, chips to the spine tail where it meets the front and rear panels, small chips to the spine fold corners where they meet the front and rear panels, and short tears to the rear panel's top edge, short tears to the spine panel extremities, some staining to the left spine edge and adjoining right edge of the rear panel), SIGNED BY PAR LAGERKVIST on the title page. Translated from the Swedish by Alexandra Dick, the novel is narrated by a misanthropic Dwarf, 26 inches tall, who believes in an unforgiving God and who himself embodies Evil, serving the ruler of a Renaissance era Italian City-State. In this, one of Lagerkvist's best-known works, the Dwarf and the other characters, illustrate the major evils of the human race. Elected in 1940 as one of the 18 "Immortals" of the Swedish Academy, Lagerkvist was as highly influential writer from his twenties into his seventies, and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1951 "for the artistic vigour and true independence of mind with which he endeavors in his poetry to find answers to the eternal questions confronting mankind". Signed copies of Lagerkvist's works are quite scarce and signed copies in English translation are especially so. One of Lagerkvist's major works, this title is especially scarce when signed in any language. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY PAR LAGERKVIST. SCARCE.

        Battle of Angels: A Play

Murray, Utah: Pharos, Spring 1945. Murray, Utah: Pharos, Spring 1945 First edition, first printing. Signed and dated by Williams in blue ink on the half-title page: "Tennessee Williams / 1976". Publisher's light gray paper wrappers, lettered in red. Very good, with some wear and minor tearing to the extremities, light toning to the spine and wrapper edges, some light creasing to the first few pages, else fine. A clean and attractive copy, signed by the author. Housed in a custom slipcase with chemise. Battle of Angels is Tennessee Williams' first published full-length, published in the first issue of the literary magazine Pharos (Nos. 1 & 2). Written early in the author's career before he had fully developed his understanding of theater, Battle of Angels was a somewhat unsuccessful play. Due in equal parts to controversial subject matter and a subpar production by the Theater Guild in Boston, it was closed shortly after its opening night, which Williams describes as "as black as any I'd experienced." With Boston censorship laws already putting the provocative play into question, the poor performance of the unprepared actors sealed the play's fate. Regardless, Williams launched his career in the theater world by drawing attention with Battle of Angels and went on to produce his most popular plays over the next two decades. Still, the fate of Battle of Angels never sat well with Williams, who vowed in his prologue, "Some day it will be done again. For that occasion I will probably prepare still another version, omitting the present prologue and epilogue. They were a defensive gesture which I wouldn't have made if it were not for the appalling memory of Boston. But I have never written a play that I thought was complete and I don't think I ever will. There is too much to say and not enough time to say it." Williams finally completed Battle of Angels in 1958 with the publication of his revision Orpheus Descending, which he claims he rewrote not "because I have run out of ideas or material for completely new work" but "because I honestly believe that it is finally finished.". Signed by Author. 1st Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good.

Original Watercolor Studies for 'A Little Fur Family'

n.p., Ca. 1945(?) n.p.: n.p., Ca. 1945(?). Fine. Two preliminary paintings for 'Little Fur Family' which was first published in 1946. On paper. Measures approx. 7 by 8½ inches, and each one has additional margin on one side, each with William's signature. While these are separate studies, they seem to be intended as a double spread or a cover as they flow together beautifully. The left hand image is a forest scene with waterfall, and the right image shows the Fur Family with the Little Fur Child playing with his red ball. The images are matted together to form a continuous picture in a mat 16 by 20 inches. Although not used in the first edition of the Little Fur Family, a similar scene was used in the later printings as the cover, after the fur had been discontinued. Images are fine and bright with strong signatures. Accompanied by a copy of a later edition showing the final artwork.

La grande peur dans la montagne *

H.-L. Mermod, Lausanne 1945.

The Dwarf [Dvärgen] [Signed / Ingraverat]

New York: L. B. Fischer, 1945. SCARCE.

        Cannery Row

New York: The Viking Press, 1945. New York: The Viking Press, 1945 First edition, first issue. Publisher's buff cloth (subsequently issued in canary yellow cloth), lettered in dark blue; in the original pictorial dust jacket designed by Arthur Hawkins, Jr., with an illustration of Cannery Row by Hawkins to the front panel, titled in yellow. Near fine, with some light wear to the extremities, minor spotting to the endpapers and page edges, bookseller's plate to the rear pastedown, otherwise bright and clean pages; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear and minor nicks to the extremities, short closed tear and light creasing to the top edge of the rear panel, light pencil notation to the front flap, bright spine and panels. An excellent copy. Cannery Row is a Depression-era novel set in Monterey, California. The plot takes place on a grungy street with "the gathered and scattered, tin and iron and rust and splintered wood, chipped pavement and weedy lots, junk heaps, sardine canneries of corrugated iron, honky tonks, restaurants and whore houses, and little crowded groceries, and laboratories and flophouses." The actual street in Monterey has since been renamed "Cannery Row" in honor of this iconic novel. The plot features an unlikely cast of characters, including a marine biologist, a grocer, a restaurateur, and a group of local vagabonds. Cannery Row is exemplar of Steinbeck's talent for making even the most unsavory characters relatable and endearing; Mack and his group of homeless squatters are described as "gentlemen and philosophers united by a common dislike of a steady job and a mutual feeling for the pleasures of living according to their lights." Much of the inspiration for this novel and its 1954 sequel Sweet Thursday were drawn from the author's own life; Steinbeck was born in Monterey County, grew up knowing fishermen and other laborers, and was close friends with a marine biologist, Ed Ricketts, who worked on the real Cannery Row.. 1st English Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Illustrated with black and white photographs throughout. Spine gently rolled, light toning to front free endpaper. An excellent copy in a dust jacket with slightly chipped corners and larger chip to head of spine panel with part loss of 'W' in Weegee. First edition, second printing, of Weegee's first book. His nickname (from the Ouija board) was derived from his apparently psychic ability to beat authorities to the crime scene, a feat actually made possible by eavesdropping the emergency services on a portable police-band shortwave radio. He maintained a working darkroom in the trunk of his car in pursuance of this urgent street aesthetic. Naked City formed the foundation for the 1948 film of the same name.
