Autograph Letter Signed ("John") to Burgess Meredith and Paulette Goddard, from Cuernavaca, regarding the filming of THE PEARL, and other matters

Hotel Marik, Cuernavaca, Mexico, "june - (toward the front)", [1945] - UNPUBLISHED letter written from Cuernavaca, while Steinbeck was in Mexico "riding herd" on the shooting of the film version of THE PEARL Dear Buzzy and Paulette: I've forgotten where you live. I've forgotten Milly's [i.e., LEWIS MILESTONE'S] street number too but at least I remember his street. We don't live at the hotel but we get our mail there. I know Paulette knows the place. We have a little house with a big garden about half a mile from the plaza - very pleasant. Will be here until October I guess. We don't start shooting [THE PEARL] until August. I don't suppose there is much chance of your coming down after you finish the Chambermaid [ Meredith's DIARY OF A CHAMBERMAID]. Blumey was asking about you the other night when we were in town. We're getting lots of sun and oddly enough a lot of work done, a thing I can hardly believe. I wonder how your film ["Diary of A Chambermaid"] goes. I have some ideas for the future - too many but perhaps worth discussing some time. Tom grows like a bloody weed. He is so black we will have trouble getting him into a hotel in Georgia. And he is very strong and no intellectual company whatever. Gwyn thrives here. Anyway, we'll see our picture through here and then go on to New York in October and after that we have no plans. . The grapevine has nice things to say about your picture. And Renoir is a great man. I've always wanted to work with him. The rains are just starting here and the fine big clouds all day. It's pretty wonderful. Please give our love to Kendal and Milly. And to yourselves. JOHN" [with:] Telegram from Steinbeck's wife Gwendolyn in New York, to Burgess Meredith in Monterey, Calif., conveying Steinbeck's address in Cuernavaca: "Dear Buzz, John is in Mexico Address Hotel Marik Cuernavaca Mor. Mexico . Gwen in New York." 11 x 8-1/2 inches. One page in ink on recto of a single sheet ruled note paper. Very good. From the Estate of Burgess Meredith

An Astonished Eye Looks Out of the Air

Waldport, Oregon: Untide Press. 1945. First. First edition, first impression. Wrappers with applied title piece. Some tape shadows to the wrappers, one staple pulled through, else a very good copy. The first printing of 1800 copies was rendered unfit for release through a printer's error. All were destroyed except for about 70 copies, which were distributed with the second impression, with no known differentiation. Eventually 23 copies of the 70 copies of the first impression came into Patchen's hand, and he created a limited edition of 11 copies, with a hand-lettered limitation page (where Patchen relates this sequence of events). This is copy number 2 of the 11, and is Signed by the author. Additionally Inscribed by the author: "for Arthur, a good human being whose friend I am proud to be. Kenneth. June 21, 1946." The recipient was Arthur Sturcke, a now little-remembered painter and pacifist who exhibited in the 1930s and 1940s, and who did much to help and support Patchen. Patchen mentions him in his book Memoirs of a Shy Pornographer in a dialogue discussing art and artists: "And what about DeNiro? There is a serious young painter. All right what about Kamrowski? -- Or Lee Bell? Or Jackson Pollock? -- Or Arthur Sturcke?" Beautifully printed small collection of poems printed in a conscientious objectors' camp. Rare. .

        Supplement One: The American Language

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1945. First. First edition. Fine in modestly age-toned, near fine dustwrapper with a short tear at one fold. Nicely Inscribed by the author to an important literary editor: "My venerable colleague Bernard Smith to recall our joint sweating for art and truth. H.L. Mencken. Aug. 20, 1945." Smith was editor-in-chief at Knopf where he was known for editing B. Traven, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Langston Hughes, and many others. In 1947 he migrated to Hollywood where he was involved in the production of such films as How the West Was Won, Elmer Gantry, and Cheyenne Autumn. Smith shared a sometimes contentious relationship with the sharp-tongued Mencken, who once called Smith "a Jew, and moreover, a jackass." A significant association. .

POSTER - Plaza de Toros de Vista-Alegre - Bilbao

Ortega, Valencia 1945 - This is not a book but a wonderfully colourful ORIGINAL 1945 Spanish Bullfighting Poster. Measuring 99cm x 54.5cm, it is by Ibanez Palau and it advertises a bullfighting event in Bilbao for 11 March 1945 starring the matadors Fernando Nino del Barrio II, Gumer Galvan and Pepe Canto. The poster was printed by Ortega of Valencia and it bears the printer's name at the bottom and also the square stamp of authenticity to the lower right side. The brittle poster, whilst all original, has folds and creases, as well as damage to the right and bottom edges. All of this could be rectified by a skilled archivist and, of course, the poster would be best conserved by professional linen-backing. We believe that few of these would have survived so long in anything approaching collectable condition, as they were meant to be pasted up on billboards. Our shop acquired this poster (one of a collection of 5) many years ago from a customer who used to live in Spain. We're now having a clear out of our basement and we have decided to put it on sale internationally. The poster will be sent, well packed, in a sturdy tube. Please note that by selling such a piece of original art, we do not necessarily approve of or support the sport of bullfighting.

        The Crack-Up.

New Directions, New York 1945 - First edition, first printing. Octavo, original half cloth. In very good condition, lacking the dust jacket. Inscribed by Edmund Wilson, who served as editor to this posthumous Fitzgerald work, "To Frangeon L. Jones with the best regards of Edmund Wilson Peterborough Aug. 16, 1964". Laid into the book is the newspaper article from August 17,1964 regarding Edmund Wilson's presentation of the Edward MacDowell Medal at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. he Crack-Up tells the story of Fitzgerald's sudden descent at the age of thirty-nine from glamorous success to empty despair, and his determined recovery. Contains letters to and from Gertrude Stein, Edith Wharton, T.S. Eliot and John Dos Passos." So begins a collection of essays which can be seen as a reflection of the low point of Fitzgerald's career. Indeed, the essays were poorly received when first published in Esquire magazine in 1936, and many were critical of his personal revelations. Nonetheless, their popular has resurged and "[t]he essays stand today as a compelling psychological portrait and an illustration of an important Fitzgerald theme" (Tracy Simmons).
