        "I'm Crazy" [story in Collier's, December 22, 1945]

Springfield, Ohio: The Crowell-Collier Publishing Company. 1945. The complete story "I'm Crazy" in Collier's of December 22, 1945. Folio. A newsstand edition, not obscured by a mailing label, but with a small arrival date stamp near the title. Wrappers lightly rubbed with a touch of waviness at the top and wear at the lower front foredge with a couple of tiny nicks, very good. This issue contains the first print appearance of Salinger's classic literary creation, Holden Caulfield. The story forms the basis for the first two chapters of The Catcher in the Rye including a visit with Mr. Spencer. However, here Caulfield is portrayed as a more repentant figure lamenting his expulsion from school and with an additional sister, Viola. Accompanying the story is a half-page illustration of Caulfield, bags packed, fleeing school wearing not his red hunting cap but rather a more typical fedora. Salinger, who was always protective of his work, never allowed this or many other early stories to be reprinted. Due to this policy, his uncollected magazine appearances are always in demand and this issue, with such a direct connection to his classic novel, even more so. The true first appearance of one of the most enduring characters in American literature. .

        Animal Farm: A Fairy Story

Secker & Warburg, London 1945 - Second edition, printed in the same month and year as the first edition (August, 1945). Green cloth, stamped white spine title. Contemporary owner's gift inscription neatly penned on front fly verso, minimal foxing, else near fine in an about very good dustwrapper with extremities worn, short tears and creases. A brilliant, classic anti-utopian short novel, in which a cast of barnyard animals reenact the events of the Russian Revolution and the betrayal of its more humane elements by Stalin. Well-adapted both as a 1955 cartoon and a 1999 cable movie using the latest animal-special effects, though both versions added upbeat endings to Orwell's harrowing vision. A presentable copy. *Connolly 100*. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Odd Man Out

London: Michael Joseph. (1945). First. First edition. Fine in a lightly rubbed, very good plus dustwrapper, tanned on the spine and with some other light wear. Inscribed by the author to publisher J.J.H. Gaute, welcoming him to Ireland: "To Joe Gaute who conquered the North and South of Ireland in three weeks from F.L. Green, Belfast May 1945." A brief note from Gaute laid in explaining the inscription. An excellent thriller about a wounded Irish rebel leader who is hunted by police after a robbery, it was the basis for the classic Carol Reed film featuring James Mason. A rare novel, published in wartime, and the only signed copy we've seen. .

History of Contemporary Japanese Photography [Two volume set]: Volume I: 1840-1945 / Volume II:1945-1970

Heibonsha; Tokyo, Japan - An exceptionally important, early and rare pair of slipcased and profusely illustrated books documenting the history of Japanese photography. This two volume set was one of the first attempts to chronicle the sometimes turbulent, but always brilliant achievements in photography. Texts are in Japanese, and it is arguable that attention to the overall arc of Japanese achievements in the field were not adequately appreciated outside of Japan until decades later in the 1990s. Both volumes are bound in black cloth with no dustjacket, as issued. Both are encased in photo illustrated printed cardboard boxes, as published. Interiors of each volume are in excellent, pristine condition. Outer boxes show a bit of tanning and a few very minor chips and light spotting, but are otherwise in fine condition. Spine and covers of each are in fine condition, save for some light scratches on the spine of Volume II. Volume I, published in 1971, 516 pp.; Volume II, published 1977, 589 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

New York: [Published by the Artist], 1945.. [4]pp. plus eight copper plate engravings and interleaves. Folio (53.5 x 37 cm). Loose sheets laid into wrappers, enclosed in a folding cloth portfolio, stamped in black. Small spot in lower corner of upper portfolio board, some creases to tissue interleaves, else about fine. One of only fifty numbered sets, signed by the artist on the justification, and with each individual print signed and numbered as well. The upper wrapper incorporates yet another engraving (not signed). A sequence of striking engravings (one in color), ranging from 4 x 16 to 14 x 10 inches, printed by the artist on Chatham handmade paper, with the prelims printed on Japanese handmade paper. A fine, early work by the Rumanian-born artist, published contemporary with his studies at Atelier 17 and the New School under Stanley Hayter. The images are strong and angular depictions of crustaceans and shells, and were engraved while Racz summered at Vinalhaven, off the coast of Maine. The somewhat literal depictions of the some of the subjects are none the less made captivating by the style and techniques characteristic of Racz's early influences by Hayter, Picasso and the surrealists, while others are far less literal and assume an almost monstrous appearance.

        Aviators Flight Log Book.

Washington D.C. Navy Department- Chief of Naval Operations. May 1944 - Sept 1945. - Small 8vo. (7" x 5"). Bound in imprinted cloth over boards. Monthly flying log of ARM3c Frank William Gardiner. Detailing training and combat missions 5/44-9/45. Most flights, including combat missions are noted as being flown in the Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon and occurred in the Pacific Theatre of War. Noted are patrol missions, many designated as "Rocket", sub-hunting, with various notations of bombing activity. Also accompanying the log is a rare propaganda leaflet, the likes of which were dropped in profusion over Japan to worn the citizenry of their impending doom. This leaflet presents Japanese text with a large photograph of a B-29 formation unloading their bombs. Further accompanying these items is a small black and white photograph of an airborne PV2 (presumably Gardiners), which bears the ink inscription on the back reading " Good old Y092". This associates with Gardiners log book entry of his craft noted as PV237092. Red crew name stamp to front pastedown. Flight assignment designation strip laid-down to front free endsheet. Very light soiling to rear cover. A Fine copy of a wartime log with extremely interesting additions. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Day of Paris

New York: J.J. Augustin. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. FIRST EDITION, complete with 103 evocative black and white Kertész photographs and the rare original dust jacket designed by Alexey Brodovitch. "In 1945, when André Kertész published Day of Paris, his first book in America, he'd been living in New York for nearly a decade. Like so many other exiled European artists, he'd left Paris before the German invasion, so the photographs in his book were all taken in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Arranged in a loose progression from morning to afternoon to night, these pictures of a peaceful, bustling city were particularly poignant, coming as thy did at the end of the war, and their nostalgia was certainly part of their appeal. Though Day of Paris is full of cityscapes... the photographer is always alert to the human heart of the city, and even his pictures of figures passing on the street are engaging... Some of Kertész's most famous photos (the disconcertingly fragmented view through a glass clock face at the Louvre, the surreal suburban scene with viaduct and toylike train) are included here." Alexey Brodovitch "provides a leisurely understated design that allows for double spreads. shrewd juxtapositions, and unexpectedly grand expanses of white space for this small format" (Roth 101). Parr/Badger, Vol I, p.200. New York: J.J. Augustin, 1945. Quarto (242x110mm / 9.5x7in), original cloth, original dust jacket. Cloth with mild discoloration to top of rear board (as often), residue of tape on the front and rear free endpapers; dust jacket with light edgewear and a few patches of browning to spine. An excellent copy of a notoriously difficult book to find in collectible condition.

WW II Passover Archive: Four items from U.S. Army Chaplain Max A. Braude's 1945 Seder Service [UNIQUE]

NP, France 1945 - Collection of four items documenting the April 4th 1945 Passover Seder celebration organized in France for the Jewish soldiers by U.S. Seventh Army Lieutenant Colonel Chaplain Max A. Braude. 1) Braude's typed letter, addressed to "Darling" and dated Friday Afternoon 23 March 1945 enthusiastically recounts the "fun" of planning a Seder under conditions that are in "a constant state of flux.Several days ago we had not as yet received Haggadahs for Passover so yours truly ingeniously decided to photostat the haggadah portion of the abridged prayer book - except that there was no one to do offset printing and so a cut was made which should have been perfect except as you see no one could read Hebrew - so the Hebrew Text is UPSIDE DOWN - yet I think - in fact I am almost certain that it represents (sic) the first Hebrew Printing on the Continent since its liberation." The letter also mentions his sermons for Friday evening services, asks his darling to "keep a little space beside you for me" and concludes with ".above all, my dear, pray as I do that this will be our last Seder apart; and let's make the next one the biggest best that ever was anywhere." 2) 4pp. English/Hebrew text for the Seder service (including the upside-down Hebrew text mentioned in Braude's letter, taken from the "Prayer Book Abridged for the Jews in the Armed Forces of the United States") entitled "Seder Service For The Eve of Passover" with the insignia of the United States Seventh Army (known as the Pyramid of Power, or Seven Steps to Hell). 3) The U.S. Army Jewish chaplain's cloth banner (36" x 23") that hung as wall decoration at the Seder. Dark blue fabric onto which is hand sewn two appliqués of white cloth: the Star of David and the tablets of the Ten Commandments containing roman numerals I-X created in zigzag machine stitching. "CH (Lt. Col.) M. A. Braude 031036" handwritten in pen on the white border at right edge. 4) Vintage silver-gelatin photograph of Braude (third from left) with three officials at the 1945 Seder, standing near the banner, with French and American flags overhead. 4.75" x 3.75"Photograph in fine condition. Letter stained at lower right, not affecting text. Haggadah pages age toned, with small chips at edges and strengthened with Japanese tissue along folds. Banner cloth dotted with small holes, otherwise good condition. A unique and poignant collection, with personal, military and religious significance. Max A. Braude (1913-1982), an Orthodox rabbi, was the highest-ranking American Jewish chaplain during World War II. After the war he worked with displaced persons and later served as director of the World ORT Union and director-general of its international office in Geneva. In his capacity with ORT he headed the overseas operations of the approximately 600 ORT trade schools and other technical and vocational services. These programs operated in Europe and Israel as well as in Muslim countries such as Iran. Braude also served as an ICVA officer, and earlier, was the Assistant to the Director of Training at the U.S. Army Chaplain School.
