        [Manuscript]: Rooster Crows for Day

[1945]. Manuscript. Approximately 565 loose sheets comprised of roughly an equal number of typed and holograph pages. All slightly toned with edge wear, very good. Burman's manuscript for his 1945 novel about a Mississippi steamboat captain's journey on the Congo, with a multitude of corrections and revisions throughout. Accompanying the manuscript is an Autograph Note Signed from Burman to his book editor delivering the finished work. Burman, born in Covington, Kentucky in 1896, published numerous novels set in the South, with many centered on life along the Mississippi. His earlier novel, Steamboat Round the Bend, was the basis for the 1935 film of the same name starring Will Rogers. A world traveler and veteran of both World War I and World War II, Burman was among the first correspondents to reach the Free French capital of Brazzaville in independent French Equatorial Africa during WWII, an experience that greatly informed this story. With a supplied copy of the first edition of Rooster Crows for Day (New York: E.P. Dutton 1945). .

Na Jehlach Techto Dni (On the Needles of These Days)

Prague: Fr. Borovy v Praze, 1945. First Trade Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. This is a very rare first trade edition of the classic photobook, \"Na Jehlach Techto Dni (On the Needles of These Days)\" published by Fr. Borovy v Praze, Prague in 1945 that was preceded by the extremely scarce clandestine self-published edition of 1941 with original tipped-in silver gelatin prints. In \"The Photobook: A History\", Parr and Badger write, \"This remains a haunting photobook, 50 years after the war. It is a prime example of one of the photobook\'s great truths--it\'s not necessarily the individual pictures that count, but what you do with them\". Commenting in the book, \"The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century\", Vince Aletti states, \"On the Needles of These Days\" is a Surrealist meditation on war and resistance. the book\'s aura of alienation, repression, and anxiety not only captured the war\'s home front theatre of the absurd, it anticipated the depth of postwar pessimism.\" Containing 28 striking heliogravures with accompanying prose by Czech poet Jindrich Heisler, the book measures approximately 8.5 x 6 inches and is bound in photographically illustrated wrappers. The condition of the book is Very Good+ with offsetting from the gravures to the text pages. The wrappers are in Very Good condition with general wear to the front and rear wraps, along the spine edges, and the tips. This is a collectible copy of a notoriously fragile photobook that is rarely found in collectible condition. Cited in all three reference books on photobooks: The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century by Andrew Roth, The Photobook: A History, by Parr and Badger, and The Open Book by Andrew Roth.

        "I'm Crazy" [story in Collier's, December 22, 1945]

Springfield, Ohio: The Crowell-Collier Publishing Company. 1945. The complete story "I'm Crazy" in Collier's of December 22, 1945. Folio. A newsstand edition, not obscured by a mailing label, but with a small arrival date stamp near the title. Wrappers lightly rubbed with a touch of waviness at the top and wear at the lower front foredge with a couple of tiny nicks, very good. This issue contains the first print appearance of Salinger's classic literary creation, Holden Caulfield. The story forms the basis for the first two chapters of The Catcher in the Rye including a visit with Mr. Spencer. However, here Caulfield is portrayed as a more repentant figure lamenting his expulsion from school and with an additional sister, Viola. Accompanying the story is a half-page illustration of Caulfield, bags packed, fleeing school wearing not his red hunting cap but rather a more typical fedora. Salinger, who was always protective of his work, never allowed this or many other early stories to be reprinted. Due to this policy, his uncollected magazine appearances are always in demand and this issue, with such a direct connection to his classic novel, even more so. The true first appearance of one of the most enduring characters in American literature. .

History of Contemporary Japanese Photography [Two volume set]: Volume I: 1840-1945 / Volume II:1945-1970

Heibonsha; Tokyo, Japan - An exceptionally important, early and rare pair of slipcased and profusely illustrated books documenting the history of Japanese photography. This two volume set was one of the first attempts to chronicle the sometimes turbulent, but always brilliant achievements in photography. Texts are in Japanese, and it is arguable that attention to the overall arc of Japanese achievements in the field were not adequately appreciated outside of Japan until decades later in the 1990s. Both volumes are bound in black cloth with no dustjacket, as issued. Both are encased in photo illustrated printed cardboard boxes, as published. Interiors of each volume are in excellent, pristine condition. Outer boxes show a bit of tanning and a few very minor chips and light spotting, but are otherwise in fine condition. Spine and covers of each are in fine condition, save for some light scratches on the spine of Volume II. Volume I, published in 1971, 516 pp.; Volume II, published 1977, 589 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

New York: [Published by the Artist], 1945.. [4]pp. plus eight copper plate engravings and interleaves. Folio (53.5 x 37 cm). Loose sheets laid into wrappers, enclosed in a folding cloth portfolio, stamped in black. Small spot in lower corner of upper portfolio board, some creases to tissue interleaves, else about fine. One of only fifty numbered sets, signed by the artist on the justification, and with each individual print signed and numbered as well. The upper wrapper incorporates yet another engraving (not signed). A sequence of striking engravings (one in color), ranging from 4 x 16 to 14 x 10 inches, printed by the artist on Chatham handmade paper, with the prelims printed on Japanese handmade paper. A fine, early work by the Rumanian-born artist, published contemporary with his studies at Atelier 17 and the New School under Stanley Hayter. The images are strong and angular depictions of crustaceans and shells, and were engraved while Racz summered at Vinalhaven, off the coast of Maine. The somewhat literal depictions of the some of the subjects are none the less made captivating by the style and techniques characteristic of Racz's early influences by Hayter, Picasso and the surrealists, while others are far less literal and assume an almost monstrous appearance.

        Aviators Flight Log Book.

Washington D.C. Navy Department- Chief of Naval Operations. May 1944 - Sept 1945. - Small 8vo. (7" x 5"). Bound in imprinted cloth over boards. Monthly flying log of ARM3c Frank William Gardiner. Detailing training and combat missions 5/44-9/45. Most flights, including combat missions are noted as being flown in the Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon and occurred in the Pacific Theatre of War. Noted are patrol missions, many designated as "Rocket", sub-hunting, with various notations of bombing activity. Also accompanying the log is a rare propaganda leaflet, the likes of which were dropped in profusion over Japan to worn the citizenry of their impending doom. This leaflet presents Japanese text with a large photograph of a B-29 formation unloading their bombs. Further accompanying these items is a small black and white photograph of an airborne PV2 (presumably Gardiners), which bears the ink inscription on the back reading " Good old Y092". This associates with Gardiners log book entry of his craft noted as PV237092. Red crew name stamp to front pastedown. Flight assignment designation strip laid-down to front free endsheet. Very light soiling to rear cover. A Fine copy of a wartime log with extremely interesting additions. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
