        Portrait photograph of Rufino Tamayo

New York, december 27, 1945 - Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991) was a Zapotecan Indian born in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. He moved to México City where he attended the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plasticas "San Carlos." Tamayo was exposed to the cultural wealth of pre-Colombian México as he worked as a draftsman at the Museo Nacional de Arqueologia. While his contemporaries Siqueiros, Rivera and Orozco were advocating art with a message, often political, Tamayo's work focused on plastic forms integrated with a masterful use of colors and textures. He is one of the best known Latin American artists. His exhibitions have been in major museums such as the Palacio Nacional de Bellas Artes, México, The Philips Collection in Washington, The Guggenheim Museum in New York, The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid as well as important art galleries throughout the world (TAMAYO, RUFINO) Apx. 9-3/4 x 6-3/4 inches. .       [Los Angeles: Universal Pictures], 28 July - 4 August 1945.. [1],113 leaves (modified somewhat by revised inserts). Quarto. Mimeographed typescript, printed on rectos only of white and blue stock. Bradbound in mimeographed wrappers. A few small chips and tears at wrapper edges, lower wrapper recycled from another contemporary script (at the time, due to wartime paper conservation), pencil signature on wrapper and first leaf, otherwise very good, internally fine. An unspecified, but revised pre-production draft of this adaptation of the Holmes/Watson characters to the screen. Inserted revises on blue paper span the period above. The film, directed by Roy William Neill, starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, involves their protection of the heir of Rovenia after the King of that nation was assassinated. Although well over one hundred and fifty adaptations of Sherlock Holmes to the screen are known, beginning with SHERLOCK HOLMES BAFFLED (1903), the Rathbone-Bruce portrayals have become almost canonical, beginning with THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES (March 1939), and concluding with the twelfth in sequence, DRESSED TO KILL (1946), for which Lee also served as writer.         Signed Photograph with Stalin on the cover of a rare copy of the log of President Truman?s historic 1945 Trip to the Potsdam Conference

"Rare Book Signed ?Harry S Truman? on the cover, 140 pages, 8.5? x 10.75?. ?Log of the President?s Trip to the Berlin Conference (July 6, 1945 to August 7, 1945)? written and compiled by Lieutenant William R. Rigdon, U.S.N. Soft cover, spiral-bound. Copiously illustrated with photographs. Photo montage on the cover depicts seven individual photographs of the President. Truman has boldly signed, probably as President, beneath the photograph with Stalin. Fine condition. From the Truman Library: ?In the late summer of 1945, President Truman journeyed to Berlin for a conference between the three major allied powers-the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union. The President and his party sailed from the United States to Antwerp, Belgium aboard the U. S. S. ?Augusta,? a heavy cruiser, and traveled by plane and car to Berlin. This particular trip was different than most other trips the President made, as it took place during wartime. While on board the ship, the President witnessed several military exercises, including radar-tracking demonstrations, target practice ships, and the landing of planes on ships at sea. He also participated in an ?abandon ship? drill. While at this conference, Truman met both Josef Stalin and Winston Churchill for the first time. The three leaders and their advisors settled many issues, including the establishment of a Council of Foreign Ministers to further work on the peace treaties, the governing of Germany during occupation by the Allies, German reparations, the methods for handling war criminals, and the admission of the defeated countries to the United Nations, and other topics. As Truman met with the British and Russians to prepare for peace, preparations were also taking place for the final assault on Japan. Truman received word of the first successful test of the atomic bomb while in Potsdam, and authorized its use against Japan. On his return voyage after the conference, the United States dropped the first atomic bomb over Hiroshima, which gave President Truman great hope that the war would soon be over.?A two-page 15.5? x 10.75? fold-out map charts President Truman?s trip. Historic photographs in the ?Log? include Truman at the destroyed Reichschancellery in Berlin, Truman with Generals Eisenhower and Patton, Truman and Churchill, Truman with Churchill and Stalin, Truman with Attlee and Stalin, and Truman and King George VI ?" 41 photographs in all.Lieutenant William M. Rigdon was Assistant Naval Aide in the White House from 1942-1953."

        Prater Violet [Rare Uncorrected Proof]

New York: Random House, 1945. First edition. Wrappers. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the RARE UNCORRECTED PROOF for the first American edition of this Christopher Isherwood novel in the Publisher's original blue paper wrappers with both the Publisher's label and a label showing that the book was considered for selection by the Book of the Month club affixed to the front wrapper (closed tear to the lower label, light pencil note to the front wrapper visible when held at an angle to the light, small spot of residue to the front wrapper -- and a larger one to the rear wrapper where something presumably affixed was removed, wear to the spine, ruffling and short tears at the bottom of the pages caused by their being longer than are the wrappers, two book sale stamps to the first page), with the text appearing only on the rectos and without any table of contents. Measuring approximately 13 1/4 inches high and 7 9/16 inches across, the Proof has been produced by binding up the long Galley sheets, not many of which copies would have been made, and was issued in the period during which far fewer Uncorrected Proofs were issued than are issued today. A highly-regarded work, "Prater Violet" presents Christopher Isherwood's stingingly satirical fictionalized first-person account of his work in the film industry during the 1930s, including his work with director Berthold Viertel on the 1934 British drama film "Little Friend" (itself based on a novel by Ernst Lothar which Isherwood and Margaret Kennedy adapted for the screen). Of "Prater Violet", American author, editor, and film and theater critic Stanley Kaufmann stated "Prater Violet, in my view, is one of the best short novels in English written in this century." A Very Good copy of a RARE UNCORRECTED PROOF OF A MAJOR AUTHOR'S WORK. RARE.

A Lion Is in the Streets

(New York): McGraw-Hill. (1945). First. First edition. Faint crease to the edges of a couple of pages, still fine in fine, price-clipped dustwrapper with a tiny nick at the corner of the crown. Signed by the author. Laid in is an approximately 5" x 7" black and white photo of James Cagney, Signed by the actor in light green ink. Cagney starred in the 1953 Raoul Walsh film, about a clever and ruthless Southern politician, based in part on Huey Long (Langley's book preceded Warren's All the King's Men, but the latter was filmed first). Cagney's whole family was involved in this film: one brother was the producer, another was the story editor, and his sister had an important supporting role (indeed her character shoots Cagney's character). A very scarce wartime book, seldom found in this condition. .
