        As we may think

1945. Bush, Vannevar (1890-1974). As we may think. In The Atlantic Monthly 176, no. 1 (July 1945): 101-8. 262 x 191 mm. Whole volume, bound in blue buckram. Very good. First Edition. Bush's article describes his proposed "Memex" system for organizing, storing, retrieving, and linking information. Inspired by microfilm technology-which in 1945 represented the most advanced means of storing large amounts of information-Bush conceived of the Memex as consisting of a desk equipped with projection screens, buttons and levers, a keyboard, and a storage system designed to provide instant access to microfilmed books, periodicals, documents, photographs, etc. The Memex system would allow pieces of data to be linked into permanent "information trails" dictated by the individual user's needs, which could be called up again and modified at any future date. The Memex thus represented (to Bush's mind) a mechanical analog of the associative faculty of the human brain, one whose function was to support and extend the powers of human memory and association (Nyce and Kahn 1991, 57).In his effort to design a machine that would serve as an analogy to the human memory, Bush's thoughts paralleled those of John von Neumann, who set out the theory of the stored-program computer at almost exactly the same time. Even though both men were thinking and writing about quite different subjects, each was attempting to imagine mechanical ways of processing information that were analogous to the human brain. Von Neumann attempted to model the stored-program computer after an abstract model of the way the brain's information-processing methods were then theoretically understood. He expressed this attempt in his privately circulated First Draft of a Report on the EDVAC (1945), incorporating his own ideas and those of the Moore School group working on EDVAC. Unlike von Neumann's seminal report, Bush's general exposition of the Memex concept, emphasizing the individual relationship between user and machine, had little or no influence when it was originally published. Only after the development of the personal computer and hyperlinks on the World Wide Web was Bush's paper resurrected as a remarkably early expression of ideas that were eventually realized in a different way on the Internet.         Important Truman document written 5 days before FDR's death

"Manuscript signed ""Best wishes to Erans Finnegan / from Harry Truman,"" 5 pages, page one 8"" x 3, pages two through five 8"" x 12.5"". Buffalo, New York. April 7, 1945. Waterstained, with edge wear, partial separations at folds, and internal tear. Completely legible with bold Truman signature. Good condition. A scarce speech transcript from an address delivered to the Erie County Democratic Committee only five days before he would assume the Presidency upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The transcript, entitled ""The Job Ahead"", is inscribed at the top of the first page: ""Best wishes to Erans Finnegan from Harry Truman."" Undoubtedly signed in the rare period based on the ""now President U.S."" inscription. The speech looks ahead to the state of the nation at and after World War II and reads in part: ""...Prosperity, like peace, is an elusive state of affairs, which can easily be lost by neglect...America will never again permit the callous indifference, the economic and political inaptitude of the late twenties and early thirties to return to political power. No depression will be allowed to grow, like a Frankenstein monster, ultimately threatening our entire social structure...We hear much about the problem of returning veterans. Well, this time there surely will be no Bonus Army! Already we have created the Veterans' Bill of Rights, which contains a whole program for a modest repayment of our everlasting debt to thos to whom we owe our freedom...Fear has been expressed that when our fighting forces return these new workers might flood the labor market and threaten us with heavy unemployment...According to an official poll, after the war doubt one-fifth of our 18 million women employees will be anxious to return to their homes. These three and a half million women alone may provide sufficient jobs for most veterans seeking brief, about six million people may be expected to leave the nation's labor force when victory comes, while there are only about four million veterans ready to step into their places. Modern scientific discoveries should give rise to new important industries. Therefore, if our high production is maintained, or increased to meet the demands of peace, America may actually experience manpower shortages for some time in certain localities..."""

        Erica and Peter

Pendle Hill, Wallingford, Pennsylvania: Hildegard Herbster. [circa 1945]. First. First edition. Square octavo. [35]pp. Stapled wrappers with cover illustrations hand-colored. Text and simple line drawings mimeographed on thick leaves similar to elementary school construction paper. Wrappers foxed, a few scattered and small paper defects, still a pleasing very good copy. A collection of simple pedagogical nature stories for young readers, and an activity book by Hildegard "Hillie" Herbster (1908--1998) was a Quaker artist who attended art school in Philadelphia and Germany during the 1930s. During World War II, she was a resident at Pendle Hill where she lived with her young daughter Erika (in the book seen as "Erica"). The gentle narrative of this rare children's book, showing a love and respect of nature, reinforces the pacifist tones of the Quaker belief system during the violent period of the second World War in which it was produced. Rare. OCLC locates no copies. .

        Portrait photograph of Rufino Tamayo

New York, december 27, 1945 - Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991) was a Zapotecan Indian born in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. He moved to México City where he attended the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plasticas "San Carlos." Tamayo was exposed to the cultural wealth of pre-Colombian México as he worked as a draftsman at the Museo Nacional de Arqueologia. While his contemporaries Siqueiros, Rivera and Orozco were advocating art with a message, often political, Tamayo's work focused on plastic forms integrated with a masterful use of colors and textures. He is one of the best known Latin American artists. His exhibitions have been in major museums such as the Palacio Nacional de Bellas Artes, México, The Philips Collection in Washington, The Guggenheim Museum in New York, The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid as well as important art galleries throughout the world (TAMAYO, RUFINO) Apx. 9-3/4 x 6-3/4 inches. .
