KZ: BILDBERICHT AUS FÜNF KONZENTRATIONSLAGERN ["PHOTO REPORT FROM FIVE CONCENTRATION CAMPS."]

No Place: Alliierten Streitkräfte. 1945. First Edition. Paper Wrappers. Folded in half, tear to rear cover, paper solid. Good; 4to (Large); 30 pages; Published by the Amerikanisches Kriegsinformationsamt. Robinson & Friedman #3587. Wolff I #1580. Grizly Photos on Every Page. This collection of some of the most horrible concentration camp documentary photos you'll see was put together as part of the US Army's denazification and re-educationprogram for the German populace after the war. The photos were takenat 5 liberated camps: Buchenwald, Belsen, Gardelegen, Nordhausen, & Ohrdruf, and often show German civilians or SS men being forced to bury, move or view bodies. 44 black-and-white photographs. Originalstapled wrappers, printed in grey and black; First edition. KZ was used as an abbreviation of Konzentrationslage (concentration camp). "This small but important book was distributed in Germany by the American War Information Unit at the end of the World War II in order to convey to the civilian population the enormity of the crimes committed by the Nazis in the name of the German people. Thus this book, which is not much more than a pamphlet, may represent the single most significant use of photography as a witness in the medium's history" (Parr, M. and Badger, G., The Photobook: A History Vol.II, p.194). It includes the famous and controversial photo of the Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel in Buchenwald (first published in the "New York Times" on May 6, 1945 with the caption "Crowded Bunks in the Prison Camp at Buchenwald" taken inside Block 56 by Private H. Miller of the Civil Affairs Branch of the U. S. Army Signal Corps on April 16, 1945.) [Parr-Badger I. p. 188; 194., Cornelia Brink - Ikonen der Vernichtung. ?-ffentlicher Gebrauch von Fotografien aus nationalsozialistischen Konzentrationslagern nach 1945. Berlin, 1998. Akademia Verlag.]. First photo publication in postwar Germany. The final images are of General Dwight Eisenhower witnessing the atrocious sights of Ohrdruf. Powerful. Damaged copies sold at auction in 2011 and 2013 for 2500-3500 each. Light wear, folding crease, tears on rear cover, not affecting photos nor text. Paper & binding remain very solid, Very Good- Condition. (HOLO2-13-4) xx .

        Wars I have Seen

      B. T. Batsford, Ltd., London, 1945. 1st edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. "This book is... the experiences and reflections of a brilliant and resourceful woman, who remained in France during the four years of the German occupation, and wrote it [the book] in longhand under the noses of the Nazis who were often quartered in her house... the resulting book is one of the most remarkable of the war. It is crammed with first-hand anecdotes, human, humorous or tragic, of what the common people of France endured during the dark days of the Occupation, but as the theme advances a sense of exhileraion and defiance seems to grip its pages. The book culminates in the arrival of the Americans..." [Dust Jacket] The book and dust jacket are both in Fine condition. The dust jacket is not price-clipped. There is a protective mylar cover.         LITTLE FRIEND, LITTLE FRIEND (Signed)

New York: Dial Press, 1945. First Edition. Hard Cover. near Very Good dust jacket. Octavo. Bound as issued in full cloth with blind embossed stars on the front board and decorative title in yellow on the spine; corners a trifle rubbed; top of boards are very faintly sunned; contents clean and binding sound; notoriously fragile dust jacket has a split along the top half of the front joint and some light chipping at the spine and the top of the back panel; back panel is a bit toned along the top; given its fragility, this jacket is in remarkable condition; inscribed by Jarrell on the front free endpaper to Louise Fitzhugh (her bookplate on the front pastedown). It is probable that this is the Tennessee-born Fitzhugh that authored the classic children's book, Harriet the Spy. A fantastic copy of Jarrell's second book, and first book of war poems. While there was more to Jarrell's career than his war poetry, it is here that he made he made a sizable mark. Robert Fitzgerald argued that Jarrell was "practically the only American poet able to cope with the Second Great War." Little Friend, Little Friend is an important contribution and concludes with the most anthologized of his poems and arguably the most potent written by anyone about the Second World War, "The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner." John Crowe Ransom called it "nearly perfect." Scarce signed. Signed and inscribed by Jarrell on the front free endpaper.

        The Collected Prose Works [Signed]

London: Lindsay Drummond, Ltd., 1945. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/fine. A Very Near Fine copy (modest corner bumping, light pushing at the spine ends, expected age soiling to closed page block edges) of the first edition, first printing of this important publication, in a Fine dust jacket (some light toning to the recto and the verso, tiny edge pushing, light soiling to rear panel edge, a tiny foxing spot to each panel), SIGNED BY BORIS PASTERNAK on the front free endpaper; a collection of selected prose from the great Russian author, winner of the 1958 Nobel Prize in Literature -- which, after his initial acceptance of it, Russian authorities forced him to decline; a diminutive but important publication as the Russian authorities suppressed Pasternak's writing, and, until the publication of this volume, none of Pasternak's work had been published in English translation. This inexpensively-produced World War II era book is rather uncommon, is less common still when in the dust jacket, and is remarkably uncommon when in a condition as nice as is this copy. (The dust jacket to this copy in particular is considerably better than most dust jackets on the few -- unsigned -- jacketed copies of this book that we have seen.) Having an excellent Provenance, this copy comes from the Estate of Martha Graham (of Dance fame). Signed copies of any of Pasternak's works, whether or not in English translation, are extraordinarily scarce, and signed copies of his works in English translation are absolute hen's teeth. (Our most recent search of the auction records reveals only one of his books signed by Pasternak coming to auction in the last 25 years, and that being a Czech translation.) A Very Near Fine copy of an extraordinarily scarce book, Boris Pasternak's debut book in English translation, SIGNED BY BORIS PASTERNAK. RARE.

        Portrait photograph and accompanying letter

London: , 1945. Vintage silver gelatin print, mounted on card. Stoneman's studio wet-stamp verso. Very good condition, a little marginal oxidisation, light creasing to mount. Size: 11.4 x 15 cm. Card size: 19 x 12.5 cm. Presented in a handmade frame with conservation mount and glass. Signed on the mount in black ink "W. S. Churchill", showing Churchill standing three-quarter length in black formal suit and bow-tie, with right hand resting on the Cabinet desk. Accompanying letter and compliments slip from his aide-de-camp, C. R. Thompson sending it to Sergeant Frank Bessant expressing thanks for his services in the Marine Detachment at 10 Downing Street, studio stamp on reverse. This famous wartime image was taken at about 3pm on 1st April 1941 as Churchill waited for word on Germany's invasion of Yugoslavia. Sensing the historical significance of the sitting, Stoneman not only recorded the date but also the time for posterity. Stalin reputedly kept a copy of this print on his desk in the Kremlin. This photograph was presented to Frank Bessant of the Royal Marines who was later recalled to be one of Churchill's bodyguards, and has remained in the family since then. Stoneman began as a photographer in the 1890s and was still working in his studio in Baker Street at the time of his death in 1958. He was the chief photographer (and ultimately chairman) of J. Russell & Sons, photographers to the National Portrait Gallery's National Photographic Record, founded in 1926. In that capacity he photographed some 7,000 distinguished sitters. He called himself 'the Man's Photographer' on the now controversial grounds that 'Women do not make beautiful photographs. Men have more character in their faces.'

        Tribute to the Angels.

Oxford: University Press 1945 - FIRST EDITION, pp. 42, crown 8vo, original printed wrappers, small ringstain to front and a small trace of surface adhesion at foot of same, otherwise very good. The second part of H.D.'s Second World War sequence 'Trilogy', inscribed by H.D. the day before publication 'to Gordon Bottomley, from H.D. ".we pause to give thanks." April 10 - 1945'. The extent of their acquaintance is obscure, but in 1943 they had both participated in 'The Poets' Reading' organised by the Sitwells, and this is a notable inscription from an Imagist to a Georgian poet - despite the seemingly contrasting programmes of those two movements.         English - Arabic Military Dictionary

[Baghdad]: Ministry of Defence, Government of Iraq, Iraqi Army Press, no date, ca. 1945. 12mo, 20 loose leaf pamphlets, variously paginated [approximately 557 pages in total], stabbed & cord-tied within printed paper over board, cloth backed covers. Edges rubbed, lightly age browned, one blank page with ink scribbling, Very Good. Quite obviously published after 1943 but still during the British re-occupation following the brief Anglo-Iraqi War, the Lexicon Committee included advisors from the British Council. Their threefold objectives were to preserve the work of Professor Abdul - Masih Wazir, who had translated numerous English military publications, to provide an "easy means of reference for translators so that a uniform and standardized Arabic military vocabulary [could] be developed," and "provide a suitable English - Arabic dictionary for all officers of the Iraqi Army studying English." The preface states that the pamphlets were "published as a series in loose-leaf form in order to facilitate revision." OCLC locates three copies but also records a 1945 edition with 573 pages which is quite likely a finalized version.

Prater Violet [Rare Uncorrected Proof]

Random House, 1945, Wrappers, Book Condition: Very Good, First edition. A Very Good copy of the RARE UNCORRECTED PROOF for the first American edition of this Christopher Isherwood novel in the Publisher's original blue paper wrappers with both the Publisher's label and a label showing that the book was considered for selection by the Book of the Month club affixed to the front wrapper (closed tear to the lower label, light pencil note to the front wrapper visible when held at an angle to the light, small spot of residue to the front wrapper -- and a larger one to the rear wrapper where something presumably affixed was removed, wear to the spine, ruffling and short tears at the bottom of the pages caused by their being longer than are the wrappers, two book sale stamps to the first page), with the text appearing only on the rectos and without any table of contents.Measuring approximately 13 1/4 inches high and 7 9/16 inches across, the Proof has been produced by binding up the long Galley sheets, not many of which copies would have been made, and was issued in the period during which far fewer Uncorrected Proofs were issued than are issued today. A highly-regarded work, "Prater Violet" presents Christopher Isherwood's stingingly satirical fictionalized first-person account of his work in the film industry during the 1930s, including his work with director Berthold Viertel on the 1934 British drama film "Little Friend" (itself based on a novel by Ernst Lothar which Isherwood and Margaret Kennedy adapted for the screen). Of "Prater Violet", American author, editor, and film and theater critic Stanley Kaufmann stated "Prater Violet, in my view, is one of the best short novels in English written in this century." A Very Good copy of a RARE UNCORRECTED PROOF OF A MAJOR AUTHOR'S WORK. RARE.
