AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED. HANDWRITTEN PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE FROM A LITTLE DOCUMENTED PERIOD IN PRESIDENT KENNEDY';S LIFE

Written in 1945 when Jack Kennedy, 28 years old, was recuperating from back injuries at the health spa leased by the Army Air Corps, Castle Rock Spring, in Arizona. Kennedy returned from the South Pacific in January of 1944, and "spent a large portion of 1944 in hospitals and clinics" [Michael O'Brien; John F. Kennedy. A Biography; p. 168]. It was while he was at the Chelsea Naval Hospital for surgery in the summer of 1944 that he met a pretty young Navy nurse, Elinor Dooley. Later that year, the doctors determined that Kennedy's recovery depended on a "long period of reset in a secluded outdoor environment" [ibid., p. 179]. In early winter of 1945 he checked into Castle Hot Springs, a spa in Arizona, where he remained for three months. On Valentine's Day he received a Valentine from Elinor Dooley. ~~He returned this rather charming note to her, a note revelatory both of his relations with women and his unhappiness with his stay at Castle Rock:~~Dear Eleanor [sic]:~I've been waiting to hear from you for some time, and your valentine (for which I thank you) let me know that you still with us and not defending your country's honor and your own - in the Philippines or someplace like it.~I still have great hopes that you will be coming out this way. If you do - please - I say again, please -~let me know where you are going - for if it is near I will come on the double. Try and take any leave you can get on this end - as it is wonderful country and you would love it.~Wonderful air, riding etc. and I think I'm getting in better shape - though it goes surprisingly slow. I am really living like the doctor ordered - and finding it a bit of a strain.~Relax and write. I use this card as I thought the cactus expressed well my social life here.~love,~Jack~~[Written on a small note card with a red, yellow and green cactus on the front with the envelope also present and in his hand as well, both return address and addressed to Ensign Elenor [sic] Dooley] ~~.

String-tied brown leather photo album measuring 7" x 10" and stamped with an embossed scene of a man on a camel with palm trees and pyramids in the distance. A collection of 64 captioned black and white photographs most measuring 3" x 2.5". Very good with some tears and chips on the tissue guard and the edges worn. An album of images taken by a British solider during World War II while stationed in Egypt, El Alemain, Tunis, Sousse, Sfax, Pont Du Fans, Cantaia Sicily, and others between 1942-1945. Pictured throughout the album are photos of the cities, the pyramids, the Sphinx of Africa, ancient forts, and the harbor of Algiers. There are also numerous military pictures including a night attack on Alexandria with antiaircraft fire captured on film like a fireworks display. One page shows two German grave sites and a group of captured Germans at El-Alemain as well as an overturned tank. Seven photos show men with various planes taken at Sousse Airfield; one photo is captioned, "enemy plane hit by ack-ack."         NAKED CITY BY WEEGEE

(WEEGEE). Fellig, Arthur, aka Weegee. Foreword by William McCleery. NAKED CITY BY WEEGEE. New York: Essential Books, 1945. Second Printing. Small 4to. Cloth in Pictorial Dust Jacket. Photography Monograph. Near Fine/Very Good -. 246pp, profusely illustrated in monochrome gravure. Designed by Henry Stahlhut and Michael Polvere. "Weegee's Naked City" is Arthur Fellig's (aka "Weegee The Famous") enormously influential first book of gritty images of the seamier, crime-riddled side of forties-era New York. Working mostly at night out of his improvised trunk-converted-into-a-darkroom, Weegee parlayed his police radio, trusty Speed Graphic camera, and an uncanny knack for getting to a crime scene quickly into journalistic infamy. An internally most handsome example of the 1945 Essential Books edition (cited on page 145 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I", pages 142-143 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", and pages 118-121 of "The Book of 101 Books") in the smooth grey cloth binding whose vibrant yellow dust jacket states "Second Large Printing" on the inside front flap and shows some light soiling and creasing, a small area of surface paper loss at the upper foredge corner of the front cover, and a one inch missing chip at the at the top of the spine. Still in all, it is a very sharp copy of this Weegee classic whose rarely found dust jacket looks much nicer in hand than it describes. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         A wonderful collection of over 900 vintage paperbacks, fastidiously hand-picked from all parts of North America by an avid and knowledgable collector. The collection is still intact and has not been 'robbed' of its outstanding and often signed publications. (Please ask for detailed list). / Lovingly curated, with a particular eye for unusual titles, this collection represents mid 20th century American pop art at its best. From hard-boiled detective stories to alien invasions, from femme fatales to teenage angst, from swashbuckling buccaneers to gritty westerns, these books were collected for two reasons; their excellent, almost new (and in many cases unread) condition, and their lurid, 'one of a kind' cover art and outrageous tag lines.         The Blue Dahlia (Post-production script for the 1945 film)

Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1945. Post-production Release Dialogue Script for the 1946 film. The only script associated with the legendary noir that we have ever seen, and presumably the earliest continuity, dated 7 months prior to the film's release. "The Blue Dahlia" got off to a shaky start, as Raymond Chandler could not finish the screenplay on schedule, and was finally under the gun from Paramount to turn in a script with only 2 weeks to go. Chandler reportedly began a non-stop diet of alcohol and glucose injections, ultimately meeting the deadline and turning in his only original screen story, a hard-boiled gem that was the equal of any of his novels. A recognized gem as well: Chandler received an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay. Alan Ladd played the Chandler anti-hero to perfection, opposite Veronica Lake during a period when she could basically do no wrong. Tall white studio self-wrappers, dated September 21, 1945, with the sole screenwriting credit for Chandler on the first page. 66 leaves, mimeograph, side-stitched. Very Good condition, with a small bit of tearing at one of the staples and curl to a couple of corners. In a custom clamshell box, with matching folding chemise.

Handschriftliche Notizen der Chinesisch-Sprachkurse der Baronin Irene von Oertzen im Shanghai der 1940er Jahre. 4 Hefte.

1942, 1944-1945, - gr. in-8vo, 137 Bll. + 15 w. Bll. / 71 teils unnum. S. + 32 w. Bll. / 132 S. + 7 w. Bll. / 91 S. + 28 w. Bll.

Octavo. Original cream light card wraps printed in green black. With the glassine dust jacket as issued. Frontispiece and 20 plates after collages by Ernst. Contents toned as often. An excellent copy. Second edition, inscribed by Eluard on the first blank "à Monsieur et Madame Edwin Sisler, ce livre dont je n'ai fait qu'un tiers, Paul Eluard"*, and additionally signed below by Max Ernst. An intriguing message, and at the risk of taking a surrealist at his word, one that might allude to a third force behind this landmark work, Ernst and Eluard's second joint-publication and their first genuine collaboration: for Répétitions, published earlier the same year as Les Malheurs (1922), Eluard simply chose the collages that best suited his poems, whereas here the pair worked in "near-perfect symbiosis" (Assa, The French Review, Vol. 64, No. 3, 3 February 1991, p. 643) to produce a work interrogating such themes as "the relationship between painting and poetry, the role of the image as icon of psychic processes, and the ambivalent status of the scopic function - or the reversibility of blindness and revelation", anticipating Bréton's vaunted Manifeste du surréalisme (1924) by two years. The first edition of Les Malheurs was printed in an unspecified "small number of copies" (rear of volume); this second edition comprised 1860 lettered or numbered copies (in addition to a "few" copies not for sale), of which this is number 558. Inscribed copies are rare.

Twee originele tekeningen, de allervroegst bekende.

      1. Sint Nicolaas. 35,5 x 26,0 cm. Oude man. 36,5 x 30,0 cm.

Stuart Little is a 1945 children's novel widely recognized as a classic in children's literature. Stuart Little was illustrated by the subsequently award-winning artist Garth Williams, also his first work for children. It is a realistic fantasy about a talking mouse, Stuart Little, born to human parents in New York City.Garth Montgomery Williams (1912-1996) was an American artist who came to prominence in the American postwar era as an illustrator of children's books. Many of the books he illustrated have become classics of American children's literature. In Stuart Little, Charlotte’s Web, and in the Little House series of books of Laura Ingalls Wilder, Williams's drawings have become inseparable from how we think of those stories. In that respect... Williams's work belongs in the same class as Sir John Tenniel’s drawings for Alice in Wonderland, or Ernest Shepard’s illustrations for Winnie the Pooh.Hall, A13
