Photograph Album Documenting the Initial Occupation of Nagasaki Following the Japanese Surrender in World War II

Japan, 1945. Photograph Album. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. The album measures 12" x 15" and contains 56 pages with over 275 corner-mounted, captioned photographs, most of which are 4.5" x 3.25". Six Japanese newspapers are attached to pages at the back of the album and a number of news clippings are laid in. The album and contents are in nice shape. Cowan's family removed his name from the front cover, but it appears in ink inside the front cover and in one of the newspapers. This is an important visual record of the initial occupation of Nagasaki, Isahaya, Kumamoto, and Sasebo by the 2nd Marine Division. The photos begin with embarkation at Garapan Harbor in Saipan and continue with in route convoy images including destroyed and abandoned Japanese ships, and the remains of the Mitsuibishi Shipbuilding Company at Nagasaki harbor. The Nagasaki photos show the destruction caused by the atomic bomb, Japanese soldiers and policemen still in uniform, ragged children, as well as intact buildings including the train station, prison, and street scenes. There are also five photographs of the 1st Bn, 8th Marines at Isahaya Airfield and a number of abandoned Japanese airplanes. The album continues with images of Kumamoto where Catrow was assigned to a Military Police Company. They include more pictures of uniformed Japanese soldiers, unit buildings, inspections, barracks life, and a number of photographs of many civilians engaged in their daily lives. Catrow's unit departed from Sasebo where his photographs concentrate primarily on the harbor and include a damaged Japanese destroyer and U. S. vessels. He has numerous images of the voyage to the United States including a wrestling match, signing Christmas carols, and bunkmates. His arrival at San Diego is well documented as is his temporary stay at Camp Pendleton awaiting discharge. The five newspapers (The Kumamoto Nichinichi Shimsun) mounted at the back of the album are from November 1945 include photographic images taken by Catrow. A tissue copy translation of one of the articles notes that "Catrow-San . . . keeps a sharp eye on the city as he patrols on his jeep, but he casts another 'cultural eye' on what happens around him." Indeed, Catrow was a talented amateur photographer and his album provides unique and historically valuable record of the occupation of Japan following its surrender after the destruction of Nagasaki.

[Photo Album]: American Soldier in Northern Africa and Paris in Closing Days of World War II

Egypt, Paris. [circa 1945]. Oblong quarto. Measuring 9.5" x 12.5". String tied brown leather with intricate stamp of an Egyptian hieroglyph on the front board. Contains 126 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 7" x 9.5", without captions, includes several real photo postcards and a few commercially produced images. Very good photo album with rubbing and near fine photographs.A photo album kept by an American soldier while he was stationed in North Africa and France during World War II. From the photos of men in flight jackets, certain insignias, and a few photos of planes it seems safe to say the compiler of the album was in the Air Force during the war possibly on a ground crew. The album begins with a group of men and women on a stage, presumably during a U.S.O. show. One photo shows a group of pretty young women hanging around a sleeping soldier, another shows a band on a stage posing for the camera. The soldier who kept the album was first stationed in Egypt. Here the album shows uniformed men on camels being led by Egyptian guides through the sights of the pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. There are numerous portrait style photographs of the soldier and his comrades posing around the palm tree-lined sights on their tour of duty. The photos of the barracks show men on bicycles, playing instruments, and lounging. A few of the photos show men on the wings of planes presumably fixing or investigating a problem. The tourist sights of Egypt are pictured in better than average snapshot images (especially for a soldier), as well as a few photos that were commercially produced. The Sphinx, the Nile, and the pyramids are all captured in beautiful shots as well as photos of the soldiers posing around the monuments. The people of Egypt and the surrounding area are seen throughout his photos, usually as guides. One photo of bare breasted village women shows them holding baskets on their heads. Others are seen on camelback, at the market, and in the desert. The soldiers are seen around the city and in their barracks, some wearing pith helmets. One photo shows two men posing with African-American soldiers in desert khaki uniforms, another shows a man with a rifle on watch. Two photos towards the end of the album show men standing at attention with a high ranking officer inspecting them. Interspersed with the Egypt tour of duty is his time in France. Here the men are seen around Paris, posing in front of the Eiffel Tower and the Arch de Triumph. An interesting accumulation of a soldier's tour of duty mostly in Egypt with better than usual amateur photography. .

Cornered (Original One Sheet Film Poster)

Los Angeles: RKO Radio Pictures, 1945. Original one sheet poster for the 1945 film noir. An overlooked gem from Dick Powell's second life as a noir icon, an anti-fascist espionage tale with a labyrinthine, Chandler-worthy plot, and an unforgettable standoff at the end. The undisguised, left-leaning overtones throughout contributed significantly to the blacklisting of both producer Adrian Scott and director Dmytryk. 27 x 41 inches (105 x 89 cm).         Cytology and Cell Physiology [association copy: from the library of Francis Crick]

Oxford University Press 1945 - 8vo; pp. [xii], 296. BEFORE THE PARADIGM SHIFT: FRANCIS CRICK'S COPY OF AN IMPORTANT PRE-1953 TEXTBOOK. Crick's books occasionally appear on the market, but only very rarely do they pre-date his 1953 discovery, with James Watson, of the structure of DNA. This volume was printed in 1945, and contains a tantalizing account of the nature of the chromosomes and the little that was known then of the structure of DNA. In the chapter 'Nucleus, Chromosomes, and Genes', for example, we find: "This apparently accidental correspondence betwen the spacing of the essental units in these two types of molecule [nucleic acid chain and polypeptide] may, in fact, be the key to the true role of the nucleic acids" (p. 143). This refers to the vital crystallographic work of Astbury and Bell, and effectively sets the stage for Crick and Watson's work of the subsequent 15 years, i.e. the development of the 'Central Dogma'. There is also a section explaining X-ray crystallographic techniques in cell analysis – these, of course, were crucial to the 1953 Nature publication. Near fine condition: blue cloth a little faded along the top edge; internally very good throughout. 1945 reprint of the 1942 first edition. Signed by Crick to the inside front cover (as with all his books that we have seen). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Piraterias y Ataques Navales contra las Isla Canarias.

Madrid. Instituto Jeronimo Zurita.(1945). 3 vols. in 5. 28 x 20 cm. Original Blue Cloth with gilt back. Slightly blotchy. With numerous Illustr. and some folded Maps. - Paper bronzy, four volumes cover hinge inside broken, a few pages relaxed, Binding tight, otherwise in clean condition.         Archive of Press Coverage of the Founding of the United Nations

1945 - All together, there are 67 ribbon-copy typescript articles that cover the conference start to finish dating from April 25 through June 28 (1945) comprising 268pp and ca. 45,000 words. The reports are housed in a manila binding with a two-hole punch metallic binder. On the front cover in pencil is "A.H. Uhl / PM (1)" **This is a collection of journalist Alexander Uhl's coverage of the San Francisco Conference establishing the United Nations. (Uhl had seen fighting in Spain (covering the war there for Associated Press) and WWII (reporting for the great PM newspaper and for which he was awarded the French Legion of Honor medal.) What we have here is Uhl's very own ribbon-copy typescript of his nearly-daily coverage that were telegrammed back to the PM headquarters in New York City. Many of the reports are written on the back (and sometimes the front) of "Western Union Press Message" stationery. The writing is clear, concise, and filled with sharp observations. **Provenance: the estate of Alexander Uhl 1899-1976) via Gladys Uhl Katcher (1910-2000). Alexander Uhl, a New Yorker (CCNY and Columbia School of Journalism) was a Major League Old-School reporter of a high order. He began 1935 when he began covering the Spanish Civil War for the Associated Press, where he remained until 1938. Uhl went from there to Europe where he covered the war and post-war from 1940 to 1948, and was one of the earliest on-the-ground reporters covering hard action--this for the famous Leftie newspaper PM, which vowed never to take advertising money and to survive on subscription and daily sales. At the time of his reporting on the U.N. Conference Uhl was the foreign editor of PM. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Vers la vallée du Nil.

Liège: Éditions Dynamo,, 1945. Octavo, pp. 12. Original stitched cream wrappers, titles red and black and multicoloured decoration to front cover. With the glassine jacket. An exceptional copy. First edition, signed limited issue. This is copy number 1, the only copy in the edition printed on Imperial Japon paper, the tête-de-tirage. The whole edition consisted of 49 copies, of which 40 were printed on vélin, 8 on Vélin Chiffon Bleu, and one (the present copy) on japon imperial. The pamphlet was printed in memory of Saint-Exupéry, whose plane had disappeared off the coast of Marseilles on 31 June 1944, and is a short hitherto unpublished account by Saint-Exupéry of his crash on 30 December 1935, when he and his navigator André Prévot were stranded in the Saharan desert for four days near the Nile Delta until they were rescued by a Bedouin. Saint-Exupéry referred to the episode in his autobiographical work Terre des Hommes (Wind, Sand, and Stars in the US), which won him the Grand Prix du Roman de L'Académie française in 1939, and the National Book Award in America. The opening of Le Petit Prince was in part a reference to this experience.

Spellbound (Two original photographs of Ingrid Bergman from the Salvidor Dali-designed dream sequence)

Los Angeles: Selznick International, 1945. Two vintage single weight photographs of Ingrid Bergman from Alfred Hitchcock's 1945 film noir. Taken from a dream sequence design for the film by Salvador Dali, wherein Bergman turns into a statue of the Roman goddess Diana. The sequence was set up, and possibly filmed, but does not appear in the final cut of the film. Shot by still photographer Madison Lacy. With a mimeo snipe on the verso describing the scene, as well as Lacy's stamp, and a French stamp crediting Selznick Studios and the archive of the French film magazine "Cinéma." Both Hitchcock and producer David O. Selznick were less than fond of Dalí's ideas, and Bergman is quoted in David Spoto's Hitchcock biography, "The Dark Side of Genius," as saying that the Dalí sequence ran for almost twenty minutes before much of it, including the Diana portion, was cut by Selznick. The cut footage no longer exists, and only a few of Lacy's production stills have survived. Two of a purported six known shots from the unfilmed (or unused) portion of the dream sequence, shows the actress in a quintessentially sophisticated poses. The images have become quite famous over time, and are used repeatedly in books about Bergman. Lacy's other work includes still photography for Erich von Stroheim's "The Wedding March," as well as promotional work for the films of Busby Berkeley. Both photos 8.5 x 7 inches. One photo an archival mat, the other archivally matted and framed. Very Good to Near Fine. Criterion Collection 136. Grant, p. 601. Hardy, The BFI Companion to Crime, p. 311. Selby Canon, p. 123. In very good condition, the sketch a shade light, modest chipping to wrappers, evidence of early repair to spine. <br style="">James S. Plaut (1912 - 1996) became Assistant Curator at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 1935. While working at the museum, he became involved in the burgeoning modern art movement and in 1936 he co-founded the Boston Museum of Modern Art (today, The Institute of Contemporary Art), a sister institution of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He became the museum's first official director in 1939 and organized a retrospective of Picasso's works in 1940, which included the great 'Guernica.'  In November 1944 he was selected to lead the newly-formed Art Looting Investigation Unit (ALIU) of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS).  Responsible for uncovering information regarding Nazi looting through extensive research and interviews, it was through this work that he interviewed Picasso on numerous occasions.  <br style="">In the winter of 1941, soon after the Germans had occupied Paris, Picasso while ill spent three days writing a farcical play, Desire Caught by the Tail. It was first performed on 19 March, 1945 at the apartment of Louise and Michel Leiris in Paris, where it was performed by a star-studded cast that included Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and Picasso's former lover Dora Maar. Musical accompaniment by Georges Hugnet and the narration was given by Albert Camus, describing the largely imaginary sets - that is, except for a large black box that served alternatively as a bed, a bathtub, and a coffin.  The spectators included Georges Braque and his wife, Cécile Éluard, Jacques Lacan and Jaime Sabartés. The event was photographed by Brassaï.<br style="">Described as "surrealistic" and "simply weird," the play is rarely produced due to sheer incomprehensibility. There is no plot to speak of, and the characters all are abstractly named: besides the protagonist Big Foot and his love interest Tart, there are Onion, Round End, the Cousin, the two Bow-wows, Silence, Fat Anguish, Skinny Anguish and The Curtains. And the stage directions are highly impractical: the transparent doors light up and the dancing shadows of five monkeys eating carrots appear. Complete darkness.<br>While the narrative is nonlinear and the meaning nearly impossible to decipher, the work has been praised despite (and sometimes for) its lack of message. Bernard Frechtman, who translated the work from the original French, writes in his Foreword, "It says nothing of human destiny or of the human condition. In an age which has discovered man with a capital M, it is gratifying to advise the reader that Picasso has nothing to say of man, nor of the universe. This in itself is a considerable achievement."

        Il Canzoniere (1900 - 1945).

Roma, Giulio Einaudi, 1945. In 8vo (cm. 20). Livres
