Commentarios Reales de Los Incas and Historia General del Peru 5 volumes

Emece, Buenos Aires 1945 - Five volumes, VG, burgundy leather, five compartments, gilt spine titles, Edited by Angel Rosenblat, prologue by Ricardo Rojas, 2nd edn, Spanish text, occasional spotting on fore-edges, wonderful condition of very important historical work. Lovely woodcut designs for chapter heads and tails. Volume five has complete index. While in Spain, Garcilaso wrote his most well-known work, Comentarios Reales de los Incas, published in Lisbon in 1609. It was based on stories and oral histories told by his Inca relatives when he was a child in Cuzco. The Comentarios have two sections and volumes. The first was primarily about Inca life. The second, about the Spanish conquest of Peru, was published in 1617. It was first published in English in London in 1685, translated by Sir Paul Rycaut and titled The Royal Commentaries of Peru.[6] More than a century and a half later, in 1758 when the uprising against colonial oppression led by Tupac Amaru II gained momentum, Charles III of Spain banned the Comentarios from being published in Quechua language in Lima or distributed there for its "dangerous" content. The book was not printed again in the Americas until 1918, but copies continued to be circulated secretly. It was translated and printed in English in 1961 in the United States. Ángel Rosenblat (1902, W¿grów, Poland - 1984, Caracas) was a Venezuelan philologist, essayist and Hispanist of Polish descent. He and his family moved to Argentina when he was six and he spent his whole education there, including at the University of Buenos Aires (where he was teaching when he edited this collection), where his classmates included Amado Alonso, and in its Institute of Philology, where his teachers included Pedro Henríquez Ureña. He is the author of at least seventeen important works. Bio data from Wikipedia. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

H.M.S BERMUDA ROYAL NAVY Ship's Album

this is a fascinating album kept by a Ronald George Keats from 18 Villiers Street Walsall in the West Midlands, a pictorial record of his service on the British Royal Navy Cruiser H.M.S. BERMUDA from 27th March 1945 to 19th June 1947 during which time the ship sailed from Glasgow to Scapa Flow, to Malta, Egypt and the Suez Canal, Aden, to Australia to Sydney, Perth, Freemantle, Taiwan, China, Shanghai, Hong Kong, back to Australia and Tasmania, Singapore, Trincomalee Sri Lanka, back through the Suez Canal, the Mediterranean to Gibraltar and home to Plymouth, in May 1945. She arrived in Fremantle on 1 July to take on fuel and stores, before continuing on to Sydney, where she arrived on 7 July. There she undertook exercises with other Royal Navy ships serving in the Far East, including the battleship Anson. Whilst in Sydney, news reached them of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the subsequent surrender of Japan. Bermuda then sailed for the Philippines, arriving on 23 August. She then became part of an operation to recover allied prisoners of war from the previously occupied Japanese territories. On 6 September Bermuda was attacked by Japanese aircraft, apparently unaware of the end of the war, or otherwise unwilling to surrender. Bermuda fought off the attack and was able to continue on her way. She then transported allied prisoners of war to Shanghai for repatriation. Bermuda remained in the Far East as the flagship of the 5th Cruiser Squadron, until 1947, when she returned to the UK for a refit at Chatham Dockyard. She was then placed in reserve: Keat's has kept a full record of the Ships movements with dates on the rear inside cover with well over three hundred photographs, plus letters and ephemera including a Ship's Pennant, and cap band, newspaper clippings, tickets, money, etc, a lot of the ephemeral items are loosely inserted, there are photographs of the effects of the Atomic bomb at Hiroshima, and a page of photographs showing some of the atrocities of the Japanese soldiers with beheadings and mutilated bodies newspaper clippings, a number of which record a large earthquake in Japan also pasted in a envelopes that contain further photographs, many of which are in colour Letter from the ship's Captain on the routine for preparing for the Admiral's inspection of the ship, and much more the album measures 14.5 inches by 11 inches approx. a few photographs are missing from their original spots the album covers are a little worn as are some of the page edges else the album is in good condition HMS Bermuda: (pennant number 52, later C52) was a Crown Colony-class light cruiser of the Royal Navy. She was completed during World War II and served in that conflict. She was named for the British territory of Bermuda, and was the eighth vessel of that name. Bermuda was built by John Brown & Company of Clydebank and launched on 11 September 1941. In the same year, the lead ship of the class, Fiji, was sunk while participating in the evacuation of Crete. A FINE PERSONAL PICTORIAL RECORD OF TWO YEARS AT SEA IN THE FAR EAST ON THE ROYAL NAVY CRUISER H.M.S. BERMUDA

        Cannery Row

New York: The Viking Press, 1945. First edition. Fine/Very Good Near Fine+. In the correct, first issue buff-colored cloth (second issue is canary yellow). A Fine copy of the book with the top-stain faded, otherwise in lovely condition. In a Nearly Fine dust jacket with one very small chip at the base of the spine, otherwise in excellent condition. Famed critic Edmund Wilson said "I believe that it is the one [Steinbeck book] I have most enjoyed reading." Steinbeck's straightforward prose follow the trials and tribulations of the people living along Cannery Row, in Great Depression era Monterrey, California. Indeed, the fame of the novel would help turn Cannery Row into a kind of tourist attraction. Steinbeck had just come home from being a war correspondent, and the experience - along with his failing marriage - scarred him considerably. He began this book as kind of an escape, both for him and his readers. "Some critics have suggested the book was specifically an attempt to escape the harsh realism of the war and infuse some cheerfulness into his reading audience." (Critical Companion to John Steinbeck). Fine in Very Good Near Fine+ dust jacket.

"The conspiracy or common plan to exterminate the Jew was so methodically and thoroughly pursued that despite the German defeat and Nazi prostration, this Nazi aim largely has succeeded. Only remnants of the European Jewish population remain in Germany, in the countries which Germany occupied, and in those which were her satellites or collaborators. Of the 9,600,000 Jews who lived in Nazi dominated Europe, 60 percent are authoritatively estimated to have perished. 5,700,000 Jews are missing from the countries in which they formerly lived, and over 4,500,000 cannot be accounted for by the normal death rate nor by immigration; nor are they included among displaced persons. History does not record a crime ever perpetrated against so many victims or one ever carried out with such calculated cruelty."--Section 3, page 11. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Stuart Little

Published by Harper & Brothers, New York. 1945. 8vo. This is the true first edition first printing with 'first edition', 'I-U' and '10-5' on copyright page. Frontispiece and illustrations are by Garth Williams. This is a lovely copy of the classic children's tale by this popular author. There is some very slight marginal toning to the pages, some light creasing to the first few pages and some very minor marking and rubbing to the boards, otherwise the book is in Fine condition. The front endpapers have been mounted upside-down, and the book is bound in its original pictorial cloth. The book is encased in it's original dustjacket, illustrated by Garth Williams with original price of $2.25 still on the top corner of front flap. The jacket is in Very Good condition, with some browning and edge wear, it is a little frayed with loss to the spine ends and a further hole to the spine and lower panel and splits at the corners. In all this is an attractive copy of a children's classic, which has also been enjoyed by many an adult over the years. Indeed, it is very much for all ages and delights all a wide variety of readers, in much the same way as Winnie the Pooh, Alice in Wonderland and Wind in the Willows. As such, this would make an excellent addition to any collectoion of modern first editions.
