Coastal Scene, Morotai'. A well-executed watercolour on paper (an impressive 274 x 397 mm) mounted on cardboard and captioned on the original attached matt (external dimensions 405 x 505 mm). The painting (featuring tents and simply-constructed dwellings nestled among palm trees), is in fine condition; the matt has a thin light tidemark along the bottom left-hand margin

      - The artist is unidentified, but he was possibly attached to No. 9 Repair and Salvage Unit RAAF (9 RSU). The Australian War Memorial website states that in 1945 three artists already serving with the RAAF were seconded to the RAAF War History Section as artists - Harold Freedman (1915-1999), Max Newton (1919-1975), and Eric Thake (1904-1982) - but they may be excluded as possibilities. According to the Operations Record Book of 9 RSU (in the National Archives of Australia), an advance party arrived at Morotai on 31 January 1945, with the main party and equipment following in mid-March. The Spitfire Association website adds: '457 Squadron, as part of the 1st Tactical Air Force . was deployed to Morotai in the Indies in early 1945. Beginning on the 10th February 1945, operations continued at a high intensity for the next three months. Then the Squadron relocated again, commencing operations from the island of Labuan, on the Borneo coast, on the 19th June, primarily in support of the Australian land campaign in British North Borneo. It mounted its last operational sorties on 13 August, two days before the Japanese surrender'. The painting would appear to be contemporary.         Le roman de Jean-Paul Sartre. Manuscrit autographe et tapuscrit complets.

1945. S.n. (Paysage dimanche), s.l. (Paris) s.d. (1945), 11,5x22cm & 2 pages in-4, 3 pages 1/2 in-4. - S.n. (Paysage dimanche), s.l. (Paris) s.d. (1945), 11,5x22cm & 2 pages in-4, 3 pages 1/2 in-4.

Very good photo album with rubbing and near fine photographs.A photo album kept by an American soldier while he was stationed in North Africa and France during World War II. From the photos of men in flight jackets, certain insignias, and a few photos of planes it seems safe to say the compiler of the album was in the Air Force during the war possibly on a ground crew. The album begins with a group of men and women on a stage, presumably during a U.S.O. show. One photo shows a group of pretty young women hanging around a sleeping soldier, another shows a band on a stage posing for the camera. The soldier who kept the album was first stationed in Egypt. Here the album shows uniformed men on camels being led by Egyptian guides through the sights of the pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. There are numerous portrait style photographs of the soldier and his comrades posing around the palm tree-lined sights on their tour of duty. The photos of the barracks show men on bicycles, playing instruments, and lounging. A few of the photos show men on the wings of planes presumably fixing or investigating a problem. The tourist sights of Egypt are pictured in better than average snapshot images (especially for a soldier), as well as a few photos that were commercially produced. The Sphinx, the Nile, and the pyramids are all captured in beautiful shots as well as photos of the soldiers posing around the monuments. The people of Egypt and the surrounding area are seen throughout his photos, usually as guides. One photo of bare breasted village women shows them holding baskets on their heads. Others are seen on camelback, at the market, and in the desert. The soldiers are seen around the city and in their barracks, some wearing pith helmets. One photo shows two men posing with African-American soldiers in desert khaki uniforms, another shows a man with a rifle on watch. Two photos towards the end of the album show men standing at attention with a high ranking officer inspecting them. Interspersed with the Egypt tour of duty is his time in France. Here the men are seen around Paris, posing in front of the Eiffel Tower and the Arch de Triumph. An interesting accumulation of a soldier's tour of duty mostly in Egypt with better than usual amateur photography. .

Reflexions sur le surréalisme. Manuscrit autographe

[2 Photographs of Atomic Bomb Damage in Hiroshima]

Hiroshima: United States Strategic Bomb Survey, [ca. 1945]. Very good +. Two black-and-white gelatin silver photographs, each measuring 4? x 5? approx. Typed captions to versos. One bearing large ink stamp of the Hiroshima-Matsuyama ferry line. Mild wear. Very good or better. A pair of official United States Strategic Bomb Survey (USSBS) damage prints of Hiroshima taken November 28, 1945. One is an exterior view of the Chugoku Coal Distribution Control Company (designated Building 12 by the Survey); the other captioned as: ?Building 300 ft. NWW from GZ [Ground Zero]. No structural damage.? The history of photo documentation in the months just after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is one of official censorship. General Macarthur?s order in late 1945 explicitly banning photographs of the sites has meant that images of the immediate aftermath are scarce, and these survey photos remain perhaps the best and most accurate sources extant. The largest collection of such photos is at the I.C.P.; individual examples are rarely seen.

October: The full-moon night at the gate of the Chion-in Monastery. Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902-1999)is best known for his shin hanga woodblocks. - Tokuriki was the 13th generation in a family of Kyoto artists. Kyoto was the old capital and always had a flourishing art tradition and of course lively circles of woodblock print artists. The Shin Hanga movement was a revitalization of ancient woodblock practices in a modern context. There was also a parallel Sosoku hanga creative movement in which the artist carved the woodblock and printed the pictures himself. Tokuriki was accomplished in both. Whether for figures or landscapes, he was a master of subtle colors. - Japan was a desolate place in 1945 when this edition was produced. Kyoto was spared the bombing and was pretty much intact. The Kyoto Shin Hanga circle was able to produce some wonderful prints both to sell to the occupation forces and to brighten their own spirits. (Galleries). Tokuriki was born 1n 1902 in Kyoto, studied art in Kyoto, and started his carreer as a painter. In 1929, he switched to woodblock printing. He participated in numerous exhibitions in Japan and abroad, and promoted sosaku-hanga in Kyoto. As you maybe know, the sosaku-hanga movement (creative prints movement) is a twenty century movement of Japanese printers emphasizing the artist's control over the entire process of producing prints (creation of the design, carving, printing, publishing), as opposed to the traditional "division of labor" between publisher, artist and craftman-carver typical of ukiyoe and shin-hanga. Before WWII, he made many prints published by Uchida, Unsodo and Kyoto Hanga-in. After the war, he created Matsukyu Publishing Company to produce and distribute his own prints. A subdivision of this company also publishes self-carved, self-printed pictures by himself and a few other artists . KEYWORDS:maps
