Commentarios Reales de Los Incas and Historia General del Peru 5 volumes

Buenos Aires: Emece, 1945. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 2nd Edition. Five volumes, VG, burgundy leather, five compartments, gilt spine titles, Edited by Angel Rosenblat, prologue by Ricardo Rojas, 2nd edn, Spanish text, occasional spotting on fore-edges, wonderful condition of very important historical work. Lovely woodcut designs for chapter heads and tails. Volume five has complete index. While in Spain, Garcilaso wrote his most well-known work, Comentarios Reales de los Incas, published in Lisbon in 1609. It was based on stories and oral histories told by his Inca relatives when he was a child in Cuzco. The Comentarios have two sections and volumes. The first was primarily about Inca life. The second, about the Spanish conquest of Peru, was published in 1617. It was first published in English in London in 1685, translated by Sir Paul Rycaut and titled The Royal Commentaries of Peru.[6] More than a century and a half later, in 1758 when the uprising against colonial oppression led by Tupac Amaru II gained momentum, Charles III of Spain banned the Comentarios from being published in Quechua language in Lima or distributed there for its "dangerous" content. The book was not printed again in the Americas until 1918, but copies continued to be circulated secretly. It was translated and printed in English in 1961 in the United States. Ángel Rosenblat (1902, Wegrów, Poland - 1984, Caracas) was a Venezuelan philologist, essayist and Hispanist of Polish descent. He and his family moved to Argentina when he was six and he spent his whole education there, including at the University of Buenos Aires (where he was teaching when he edited this collection), where his classmates included Amado Alonso, and in its Institute of Philology, where his teachers included Pedro Henríquez Ureña. He is the author of at least seventeen important works. Bio data from Wikipedia. .

TLS-typed Letter Signed "Last Minute Preparations"

1945. A Signed Statement on the Last Minute PreparationsFor the Enola Gay signed by Paul W. TibbetsWritten shortly after the dropping of the Atomic Bomb about the Last Minute Preparations made on August 5, 1945. Typical of Tibbets typing were strikeovers and occasional misspellings. He notes that the clouds over Japan were breaking up, the lettering on the nose of the plain which the painter took less than half an hour to complete on the Enola Gay and the loading of the bomb. He gathered the so-called Tinian "joint chiefs" including himself, General Thomas F. Farrell, the Manhattan Project's key ranking officer, Admiral William R. Purnell, Navy Captain William S. "Deak" Parsons, who would be the chief weaponer on the flight: Commander Frederick L. Ashworth, another weaponer, Professor Norman F. Ramsey, who I first met in General [Uzal] Ent's office and Professor Robet Brode. General Farrell sent a message in code to General Groves who in turn passed the word of our scheduled 2:45 A.M. takeoff time to General Marshall. The tension in the Pentagon must have equaled that on Tinian. In the messages that flew back and forth across the Pacific during our period of preparation, there were code names for everything. I was "Yoke", Deak was "Judge", General Farrell was "scale", and General LeMay was "Cannon". The recent atomic test in New Mexico was called "Trinity", atom was "Top", atomic was "Topic" and uranium fission was "Urchin Fashion".At this morning's meetings, Captain Parsons startled us all by expressing concern over our plans to take off with a live atomic explosive in the bomb bay. In the few days since he had arrived on the island, he had witnessed a number of fiery crashes as overloaded B-29's failed to become airborne. Four crashes had occurred the night before with thunderous explosions of bombs, torpedoes, and incendiaries that lit up the sky and cost the lives of all crewman aboard. Deak Parson, who knew just about all there was to know about the workings of our bomb, having participated in its development, was blunt and convincing as he spoke of risks. [note: this is why at the last minute Deak Parsons persuaded it should be done in spite of the close quarters]"If we crack up and the plane catches fire," he said, "there is danger of an atomic explosion that could wife [sic wipe] out half of this island."/Paul W. Tibbets/ [stamped in black] Pilot of the Enola Gay/Hiroshima, Japan 6 Aug. 1945.

Collection of 8 Anti-NS-Leaflets and Adhesive Stickers

NP: NP, 1945. First edition. Loose_leaf. vg. Drastic anti-NS propaganda generated and distributed as leaflets and stickers in protest of the Hitler regime before the end of W.W.II in Spring 1945. The tenor of the propaganda is indicative of the by then foreseeable end of the Third Reich when the Volkssturm, a national militia, was established on orders of Hitler by the Nazi Party, months before the end of the war: "Der Schuldige (The Culprit)," "Hitler Himmler an den Galgen (Hitler Himmler to the Gallows)," "Hitler's Tod Deutschland's Leben (Hitler's Death Germany's Life)," a march song on a sheet with text and scores "Das neue Deutschland. Neues Leben blüht aus den Ruinen.. (The New Germany, new life blossoms from the ruins...)," "Volkssturm SOS der SS (National Militia SOS of the SS)," "Deutsches Wörterbuch 1945: Verdammter, Verfluchter, Verbrecher, Ver Führer, Vernichten, Verscharren, Vergessen (German Dictionary 1945: Condemned, Accursed, Criminal, Seducer, Destroy, Bury, Forget)," "Friede über Deutschland (Peace over Germany)," and a caricature on a narrow paper strip showing the degeneration of Hitler in four drawings of declining stages in 1942, 1943, 1944, and 1945. Leaflets and stickers are in varying sizes and paper stock. All but the "German dictionary 1945," printed with the same imagery and text on both sides, are blank on verso, three of them with original adhesive. Minor chipping and creasing of three items. In very good to fine condition.

Logmeter's Long Toms: The Travels of the 733 F.A. Bn. from Camp Shelby, Miss. to Kolbermoor, Bavaria, Germany --31 March 1944 to 9 June 1945

1945. Original wraps. Very Good -. A wonderful, significant piece of World War II history. A fragile booklet, a log, mapping out in detail the schedule and itinerary of this American battalion. SIGNED BY OVER 100 RETURNING SOLDIERS FROM THE BATTALION ( THE 733 F.A. BN, WHICH SET OUT FROM MISSISSIPPI IN LATE MARCH '44 AND SOME 7 1/2 MONTHS LATER --IN MID-NOVEMBER-- PENETRATED INTO GERMANY). This booklet has obviously travelled long and far but has held up nicely and is still very solid in its stapled, salmon-colored wrappers. Light creasing and a bit of inevitable wear are far outweighed by the miracle of these returning heroes (all 106 of them) signing their names and addresses on the "Memoranda" pages and the pastedowns of this very scarce logbook.

Commentarios Reales de Los Incas and Historia General del Peru 5 volumes

Emece, Buenos Aires 1945 - Five volumes, VG, burgundy leather, five compartments, gilt spine titles, Edited by Angel Rosenblat, prologue by Ricardo Rojas, 2nd edn, Spanish text, occasional spotting on fore-edges, wonderful condition of very important historical work. Ángel Rosenblat (1902, W¿grów, Poland - 1984, Caracas) was a Venezuelan philologist, essayist and Hispanist of Polish descent. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
