American Sailor on the USS Samar on the Yangtze River and Elsewhere in the Far East, 1945-1946. [our title]

Hardcover. Very Good. Approximately 200 photos in corner mounts on both sides of the album leaves. Includes about 130 of taken while he was serving on the USS Samar or on his way to or from the United States. Size varies: 84 are approximately 8 x 5cm., 35 much smaller (3 x 4cm.), and 14 much larger (24 x 17cm.). Only a handful or less are captioned. Detail is generally very good, with some exceptions. Also included are some bits of ephemera. There are a few empty slots but they may have held ephemera, some of which is now loose in the album. Sturdy black album is approximately 21 x 26cm. The U.S.S. Samar was converted by the Bethlehem Steel Company from the former Maritime Commission Hull No. 2663 and rechristened in June 1945. In its new incarnation, it was a repair ship seeing service on the Yangtze River in late 1945 and perhaps elsewhere in China. Our sailor, identified in the album, served as a Machinist's Mate 3rd Class. The large photos appear to be professional quality photos of the ship's neatly attired personnel. Most of the other Far Eastern photos are of people and places in China rather than shipboard activities. The ephemera includes: (1) a program for the ship's rechristening; (2) an issue to The China Press for 12/2/1945; (3 & 4) two issues of The Samar Scope (Vol. I, No. 1 for 9/1/45 and Vol. II, No. 6 for 6/1/46); (5) a shipboard menu for Christmas 1945; (6) an oriental-themed Christmas greeting card sent home for Christmas 1945 by our sailor; and (7) An undated four-page "China Bowl Supplement" issued by The Stars and Stripes, presumably for the 1945 football game and accompanying rickshaw derby. The other 72 photos at the end appear to be of Camp Peary, and our sailor's wife and family, probably taken before his departure for the Far East or after his return. The stateside photos include some ephemera relating to our sailor's military service.

New York: Dial Press, 1945. First Edition. Hard Cover. near Very Good dust jacket. Octavo. Bound as issued in full cloth with blind embossed stars on the front board and decorative title in yellow on the spine; corners a trifle rubbed; top of boards are very faintly sunned; contents clean and binding sound; notoriously fragile dust jacket has a split along the top half of the front joint and some light chipping at the spine and the top of the back panel; back panel is a bit toned along the top; given its fragility, this jacket is in remarkable condition; inscribed by Jarrell on the front free endpaper to Louise Fitzhugh (her bookplate on the front pastedown). It is probable that this is the Tennessee-born Fitzhugh that authored the classic children's book, Harriet the Spy. A fantastic copy of Jarrell's second book, and first book of war poems. While there was more to Jarrell's career than his war poetry, it is here that he made he made a sizable mark. Robert Fitzgerald argued that Jarrell was "practically the only American poet able to cope with the Second Great War." Little Friend, Little Friend is an important contribution and concludes with the most anthologized of his poems and arguably the most potent written by anyone about the Second World War, "The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner." John Crowe Ransom called it "nearly perfect." Scarce signed. Signed and inscribed by Jarrell on the front free endpaper.

Official US Navy Photos of the Invasion of Okinawa and Includes a signed Magazine Photo Print of the "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima"

Japan, 1945. Album of official U.S. Navy photographs capturing the decisive final campaign on Okinawa island, as well as the proceedings and signing of the Instrument of Surrender onboard USS Missouri, following the surrender of Japan. Contains 50 gelatin silver print photographs, numbered and captioned in print to margins, mounted with corners onto black cardstock leaves, with further detailed typescript captions pasted below each view. Photographs measure approximately 10 x 12,5 cm (4 x 5 inches), with the exception of one larger photograph which is loosely placed within and measures 25 x 20,5 cm (10 x 8 inches). Also with a newspaper clipped image of American soldiers in the trenches, and one magazine print of Rosenthal's iconic 'Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima' which is signed in the original by John Henry "Jack" "Doc" Bradley who is the most famous of the soldiers associated with the event. Oblong Qto. string-tied album measuring approximately 35 x 28 cm, boards embossed with veteran roses and ribbon motif. The album begins with an original autograph of John H. Bradley, who is known famously as one of the six soldiers who raised the flag, penned on a magazine colour print, from The Examiner, of Rosenthal's iconic photograph titled 'Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima'. John Henry "Jack" "Doc" Bradley (1923-1994) was a United States Navy Hospital corpsman who was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism in combat on Iwo Jima during World War II. Bradley was famed for some 50 years for partaking twice in raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, on February 23, 1945, firstly helping to secure the American flag attached to a pipe, in the ground, after it was raised a nd planted on top of Mount Suribachi. Secondly, when a larger flag was ordered to replace the first flag the same day, five Marines raised and planted the second flag attached to a longer and heavier pipe. Bradley was the last of the surviving members credited with the second flag-raising party. Interestingly, Bradley's participation has very recently been debated and subsequently thoroughly investigated. Only a few months ago, in June 2016, the Marine Corps announced that the man first stated to be Bradley, was in fact Harold Schultz. Rosenthal, the photographer, was so busy capturing photographs of the intense campaign, hurrying here and there to various scenes, that he did not pause to get the names of the men in his photographs, nor would any soldier in the midst of battle stop for conversation. As the image gained immediate and prolific attention, a named hero was needed. Bradley was approached to represent the unknown man in the photograph. A humble man who in fact deferred accolaids, even for his truly heroic acts in the war, Bradley avoided discussion of his war record, saying only that the real heros were the men who gave their lives for their country. He is remembered as being a very modest and private philanthropist who gave generously of his time and money. The compiler of this album is not identified, though a clipped newspaper article which concludes the album, suggests that he was a marine, most likely a member of the American mortar team who served in the invasion of Okinawa. Some of the scenes illustrate in this album are as follows: •American battleship USS Tennessee preparing for defense off of Okinawa •Supplies being landed on Okinawa for the final invasion •Aerial attacks including anti-aircraft guns firing, marine fighter planes releasing rocket projectiles, Japanese suicide bomber planes being shot down •U.S. marines moving in on Okinawa's capital city Naha •Men of the Sixth Marine Division detonating explosives at Japanese cave shelters •Other action scenes featuring U.S. snipers and riflemen planning their moves and bravely charging forward into enemy territory •US Marine Brigadier General Colonel Francis I. Fenton kneeling at the foot of his son's body, Private First Class Michael James Fenton, and praying over him, at the site of his burial on Okinawa •Japanese civilians, women, children, and elderlies, placed in internment camps, depicted here as well treated and even appreciative [It has since been revealed that at least 3,000 civilians died in 1945 and 1946 in camps set up by the U.S. military in Okinawa, due to deplorable conditions and detaining over capacity.] •Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz being welcomed onboard the USS Dakota in Tokyo Bay on 29 August 1945, by Admiral Halsey •Battleship USS Missouri approaching its anchorage in Tokyo Bay for the formal signing of the Instrument of Surrender •General Douglas MacArthur delivering opening statements at the Japanese Surrender Ceremony on 2 September 1945 •The Japanese Surrender Delegation, donning mourning clothes, including Foreign Minister Shigemitou leading the Nipponese men onboard USS Missouri for the official surrender proceedings •Signatories from various nations putting their mark on the Surrender document, including officials from the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Australia, China, Russia, France, Canada, the Netherlands, and Japan. [Leonard M. Isitt for New Zealand is not shown] •President Truman and others inspecting the completed and signed Instrument of Surrender The last and biggest of the Pacific island battles of World War II was the Battle of Okinawa, code-named Operation Iceberg. From the 1st of April to 22nd June 1945, a series of battles were fought in the Japanese Ryukyu Islands, centered on the island of Okinawa, and which included the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific War. By the end of July 1945, the Imperial Japanese Navy was incapable of conducting major operations and an Allied invasion of Japan was imminent. Together with the United Kingdom and China, the United States called for the unconditional surrender of the Japanese armed forces in the Potsdam Declaration on July 26th, the alternative being "prompt and utter destruction". On August 6th the United States detonated an atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. August 8th the Soviet Union declared war on Japan. The United States dropped a second atomic bomb, this time on the Japanese city of Nagasaki. Following these events, Emperor Hirohito ordered the Supreme Council for the Direction of the War to accept the terms the Allies had set down in the Potsdam Declaration for ending the war. The surrender of Japan was announced by Imperial Japan on August 15 and formally signed on September 2, 1945, bringing the hostilities of World War II to a close. For its strategic location, the occupying American forces remained in Okinawa after the war. The island remained under American control until 15 May 1972 when it was finally returned to Japan, though the American military bases there are active until this day. American photographer Joseph John Rosenthal (1911-2006) received the Pulitzer Prize for his iconic World War II photograph 'Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima', taken during the Battle of Iwo Jima, which became one of the best-known photographs of the war. After graduating from college, he became a staff photographer with the San Francisco Examiner. When America joined the war, Rosenthal tried to join the US Army as a military photographer but he was rejected due to poor eyesight. In 1944, he was employed by the Associated Press and thus followed the United States Army and U.S. Marine Corps into the Pacific Theater of Operations as a war correspondent at Hollandia, New Guinea, Guam, Peleliu, Angaur, and Iwo Jima. He subsequently captured the Second World War's most iconic photograph.

(Bénézit, I, 639).

        Bitten by the Tarantula.

London: Allan Wingate,, 1945. A Story of the South of France. Octavo. Original red cloth, title to spine gilt. With the dust jacket designed by John Banting. 2/- price in ballpoint pen amended to 1/- in pencil on half-title. Spine a little rolled, faint smudge to title. A very good copy in a rubbed jacket with a few tiny chips and two tape repairs on the verso. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half-title verso: "Viesna, mon amour pour toi comme ce petit cadeau, ce roman frivole et sans importance ni dédicace, mais qui maintenant, comme son auteur, est tout à toi. Julian (J. Maclaren Ross), Londres Le six octobre mil-neuf-cent-soixante-deux". The recipient "Viesna" is identified by Paul Willetts as Claire, a "Dublin-based poet and friend of Brendan Behan", one of a few women with whom Maclaren-Ross, penniless and back in London after he had separated from his wife, had affairs in summer and early autumn 1962. "Such was his conviction that he and Claire, his latest girlfriend, could be happy together, that within only a fortnight he was contemplating going back to Ireland with her. It all went wrong, however, on the evening of Wednesday 12 September when she made a tactless remark which deeply offended him. That Friday she wrote to apologise, but he found what she'd said so inexcusable he appears to have broken off the affair with a regretful postcard, quoting one of her poems: 'The dream, like a perfect crime, must remain in the head.' Only a few days after their romance had ended in such anti-climax, he rebounded into a liaison with a wealthy married woman by the name of Inez" (Willetts, Fear and Loathing in Fitzrovia, 2003, p. 293). Viesna's letter of apology which Willetts references is in the Harry Ransom archive, dated 14 September 1962: "I was very much in the wrong on Wednesday, so I now send you my very sincere apologies for my stupid, tactless and inexcusable remark, which I retract completely, if belatedly. I am quite sure it has killed any feeling you might have had for me and I am all the sorrier as I think everything you said that evening could have come true, and we could have made each other very happy: but now I have spoiled it all." The tone of Maclaren-Ross's inscription here suggests that his romance with Viesna/Claire did not cool off quite as suddenly as Willetts's account suggests.

President Harry S. Truman’s Presidential Proclamation Announcing the End of the War in Europe

Washington, D.C. 1945 - Printed Document Signed as President. Washington, D.C., May 8, 1945. 1 p., 15 x 21 1/2 in. "The Allied armies, through sacrifice and devotion and with God's help, have wrung from Germany a final and unconditional surrender . The victory won in the West must now be won in the East. The whole world must be cleansed of the evil from which half the world has been freed." Complete TranscriptBy the President of the United States, a Proclamation. The Allied armies, through sacrifice and devotion and with God's help, have wrung from Germany a final and unconditional surrender. The western world has been freed of the evil forces which for five years and longer have imprisoned the bodies and broken the lives of millions upon millions of free-born men. They have violated their churches, destroyed their homes, corrupted their children, and murdered their loved ones. Our Armies of Liberation have restored freedom to these suffering peoples, whose spirit and will the oppressors could never enslave. Much remains to be done. The victory won in the West must now be won in the East. The whole world must be cleansed of the evil from which half the world has been freed. United, the peace-loving nations have demonstrated in the West that their arms are stronger by far than the might of dictators or the tyranny of military cliques that once called us soft and weak. The power of our peoples to defend themselves against all enemies will be proved in the Pacific was as it has been proved in Europe. For the triumph of spirit and of arms which we have won, and of its promise to peoples everywhere who join us in the love of freedom, it is fitting that we, as a nation, give thanks to Almighty God, Who has strengthened us and given us the victory. Now, therefore, I, Harry S. Truman, President of the United States of America, do hereby appoint Sunday, May 13, 1945 to be a day of prayer. I call upon the people of the United States, whatever their faith, to unite in offering joyful thanks to God for the victory we have won and to pray that He will support us to the end of our present struggle and guide us into the ways of peace. I also call upon my countrymen to dedicate this day of prayer to the memory of those who have given their lives to make possible our victory. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States of America to be affixed.Historical BackgroundAfter nearly six years of conflict across the European continent, President Truman was pleased to announce that Germany had surrendered to the Allies. Though Japan would fight on for another three months, Truman read this proclamation at a news conference held in his office at the White House at 8:35 A.M. on Tuesday, May 8, 1945. His wife and daughter, members of his Cabinet, high ranking United States and British Army and Navy officials, and Congressional leaders were grouped in chairs around the President's desk. Before reading the proclamation, President Truman said, "This is a solemn but glorious hour. General Eisenhower informs me that the forces of Germany have surrendered to the United Nations. The flags of freedom fly all over Europe. It's celebrating my birthday, too -- today, too." Reporters responded with shouts of "Happy Birthday, Mr. President." May 8, 1945 was President Truman's 61st birthday, his first as President following the death just 26 days earlier, of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. As he was reading the proclamation, Truman stopped after certain passages to comment. After "The victory won in the West must now be won in the East," he said, "I want that emphasized time after time, that we are only half through." After "the tyranny of military cliques that once called us soft and weak," Truman commented, "I would like to know what the Germans think about that now." After proclaiming the day of prayer, he added, "And it's exceedingly fitting that it is Mother's Day, too.

[2 Photographs of Atomic Bomb Damage in Hiroshima]

Hiroshima: United States Strategic Bomb Survey, [ca. 1945]. Very good +. Two black-and-white gelatin silver photographs, each measuring 4” x 5” approx. Typed captions to versos. One bearing large ink stamp of the Hiroshima-Matsuyama ferry line. Mild wear. Very good or better. A pair of official United States Strategic Bomb Survey (USSBS) damage prints of Hiroshima taken November 28, 1945. One is an exterior view of the Chugoku Coal Distribution Control Company (designated Building 12 by the Survey); the other captioned as: “Building 300 ft. NWW from GZ [Ground Zero]. No structural damage.” The history of photo documentation in the months just after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is one of official censorship. General Macarthur’s order in late 1945 explicitly banning photographs of the sites has meant that images of the immediate aftermath are scarce, and these survey photos remain perhaps the best and most accurate sources extant. The largest collection of such photos is at the I.C.P.; individual examples are rarely seen.

Col." in the earlier documents) was serving at the Central Signal Corps School at Camp Crowder, MO, when he and Col. Jay D.B. Lattin, (HQ, Second Service, Command, Governor's Island, NY) were ordered to report to Washington prior to being sent to Paris for 30 days to survey training installations there and to recommend improvements. (Document #1, April 10, 1945). On April 25, Swift receives a document (printed in French and English and accomplished by hand) signed by French General Merlin, (Chief Signal Officer of Ground Air and Naval Forces), "honouring him for his services" and authorizing Swift to wear the French Signal Corps insignia (Document #2). On May 2, 1945, Swift receives orders to go from E.T.O. Headquarters to Algiers for 10 days, along with Col. Hattin and Lt. Col. Paul Gilbert Raymond of the French Army (Document #3). The terms of Document #1 are then extended by 15 days (Document #4, May 16, 1945). On May 27, Swfit is ordered to London for 7 days (Document #5), and on May 30, (Document #6) he receives notification from the E.T.O. office that he is indeed authorized to wear the French insignia bestowed on him in Document #2. ~~ The photographs Swift takes in Algiers include highly evocative glimpses of the native populations in the streets and at the Casbah and public market, well as shots of French and American military personnel. Photos include birds-eye views, the mosque used as an air raid shelter, the King George Hotel (which was "Gen. Eisenhower's North African HQ"), the French Signal School, the Governor General's Palace and its guards, the "harbour", the Church of Notre Dame, ruins of an old Roman temple near the city, and the Christian Martyr's Tomb and its "keeper". Personnel at the French Signal School and French Radio Intercept Station are seen: two "Merlinettes" (i.e. women "pigeoneers" holding their birds), and Lt. Touche and other staff including two "French WACS". Three photographs document "Arab soldiers entertaining their military "guests" at an outdoor feast of pit-roasted lamb and side dishes. Lattin's five views of Algiers include the French Signal School and its staff, along with a mosque and worshippers. Of Col. Lattin's other photos, 6 were taken at the Montargis Signal School and include "German P.W.s", the School buildings and staff officers "at the officers' chateau", and a shot of Swift, Col. Raymond and the School Commandant together. Seven views taken in "Marsailles" (Marseille) include street scenes, Notre Dame church, the waterfront, and candids of the officers, including Le Man and Raymond. Also seen are two views of the waterfront at Toulons showing bombed buildings, and two of a "Mediterranean waterfront" en route from Marseille to Cannes.

Meinvielle studied for his Doctorate in Philosophy and Theology in Rome and soon afterwards became a prolific writer of religious, historical and economic books within the school of Thomism.         Commentarios Reales de Los Incas and Historia General del Peru 5 volumes

Buenos Aires: Emece, 1945. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 2nd Edition. Five volumes, VG, burgundy leather, five compartments, gilt spine titles, Edited by Angel Rosenblat, prologue by Ricardo Rojas, 2nd edn, Spanish text, occasional spotting on fore-edges, wonderful condition of very important historical work. Lovely woodcut designs for chapter heads and tails. Volume five has complete index. While in Spain, Garcilaso wrote his most well-known work, Comentarios Reales de los Incas, published in Lisbon in 1609. It was based on stories and oral histories told by his Inca relatives when he was a child in Cuzco. The Comentarios have two sections and volumes. The first was primarily about Inca life. The second, about the Spanish conquest of Peru, was published in 1617. It was first published in English in London in 1685, translated by Sir Paul Rycaut and titled The Royal Commentaries of Peru.[6] More than a century and a half later, in 1758 when the uprising against colonial oppression led by Tupac Amaru II gained momentum, Charles III of Spain banned the Comentarios from being published in Quechua language in Lima or distributed there for its "dangerous" content. The book was not printed again in the Americas until 1918, but copies continued to be circulated secretly. It was translated and printed in English in 1961 in the United States. Ángel Rosenblat (1902, Wegrów, Poland - 1984, Caracas) was a Venezuelan philologist, essayist and Hispanist of Polish descent. He and his family moved to Argentina when he was six and he spent his whole education there, including at the University of Buenos Aires (where he was teaching when he edited this collection), where his classmates included Amado Alonso, and in its Institute of Philology, where his teachers included Pedro Henríquez Ureña. He is the author of at least seventeen important works. Bio data from Wikipedia. .
