        ANIMAL FARM A fairy story

Secker & Warburg. London. 1945. FIRST EDITION. 1st impression. 8vo. A near to very good copy of the book with the cloth still dark green and the white lettering on the spine still bright and sharp. This is an ex school library copy but the only library stamp is the two line school name in ink on the title page with the number 161 below written by hand. There are a few pages with neat pencil underlining which could be erased quite easily. The last 25 leaves have a small puncture to the inner margin but the paper has rucked up it is all present and this could be easily repaired. Overall this is a very clean and bright copy throughout. Inner hinges cracked but holding firm. In the original 1st edition green, grey and white dustwrapper with some chipping and rubbing to the edges and some loss to the very top and bottom of the spine. Lower board with small area of loss where the book has previously been punctured and another small hole towards the bottom of the panel. Price still intact on front inner flap. Wrapper has the blue searchlight books printing on the reverse. Overall a near very good copy of this classic work which could be easily made to look better with a little careful restoration.

Gladio. Rivista per le Forze Armate [TUTTO IL PUBBLICATO]

(stampa: Stabilimento Rotocalcografico Viatagliano), 1945 (1 gen. - 15 apr.). 9 fascicoli in 4° grande doppio punto metallico con copertina in brossura editoriale interamente illustra a quattro colori pp. 16 (n.1), 20 (n. 2 - 3), 28 (nn. 4 - 5), 32 (nn. 6 - ), numerosissime ill. a col. n.t. Sangiorgi, Marco Morosini, Dante Dini, Vittorio Bonicelli, Adriano Bolzoni, Mario Lattanzi, Adriano Bolzoni, Gigi Nebiolo. Disegni di Bazzi, Capocci, Vittorio Morelli, Boccasile, G. Bertoletti, De Luca, Albertarelli, Angelo Canevari, Roberto Caisutti, Bruno Rosa, Dante Montanari, Montesano. Eccetto l'ultimo, leggermente danneggiato (senza perdite) all'angolino delle ultime carte, tutti i fascicoli in ottime condizioni.

A Short History of the 7th Armoured Division June 1943–July 1945.

British Army of the Rhine: Print and Stationary Service, [1945] - Octavo. Grey and blue cloth boards, titles to front cover in red, to spine on typewritten label. A few small dark stains to rear cover, slight wear to board edges, spine label worn, edges slightly foxed. A few light creases to Maps I and IV; small nick to top margin of Map XI. A very good copy. Black and white photographic illustrations throughout, 11 partially coloured folding maps in pocket attached to rear cover. First edition. This book continues the story of the 7th Armoured Division begun by Lt.-Col. Michael Carver in A Short History of the 7th Armoured Division October 1938 to May 1943. Written by Captains Lindsay and Johnston, it follows the "Desert Rats" from the end of the North Africa campaign to the British Victory Parade in Berlin on 21 July 1945. This copy is elevated by additional content which, when combined with the book, makes for an intriguing collection of documents concerning the 7th Armoured Division. Pasted to front pastedown is a handwritten letter dated 14 March [1946]; written on 3/4 County of London Yeomanry stationery, the author mentions being stationed in "an enormous castle" in Schleswig. Pasted to front free endpaper and title page verso is a newspaper clipping from the London Illustrated News, dated 2 February 1946, detailing the formation and subsequent action of the 7th Armoured division. Several magazine clippings featuring commanders of the 7th Armoured division are pasted to rear flyleaves. In addition, loosely inserted is a 1944 Christmas card specially designed for the 7th Armoured Division, showing the division's mascot, a red jerboa, visiting places where the division had seen action. Also loosely inserted is a typewritten letter signed Frank Miles and dated 24 April 1947, discussing the loan of a copy of the book and his memories of the engagements of the 7th Armoured division prior to leaving the Middle East in 1942.         Richard Wright's Blues

[s.l.]: Reprinted from the Antioch Review, Summer 1945 First separate edition. Publisher's white paper wrappers, lettered in black. About near fine, with some light toning and faint soiling to the wrappers, minor chip to the spine tail, a few faint stains to the otherwise clean pages. Overall, a very clean and attractive copy of this exceedingly scarce publication. This essay was first published in The Antioch Review in the Summer of 1945 and was republished from a newly set text for this separate format. However, as the wrappers only cite the details of the original serial, it is difficult to say whether this publication is also from 1945 or from 1952 (based on the nondescript "52" next to the publisher's slug on the rear wrapper). Regardless, Richard Wright's Blues is a scarce and important text in Ellison's oeuvre, published before (or in the same year) he achieved literary fame for Invisible Man (1952). Only five copies are listed in OCLC's WorldCat. Richard Wright's Blues is Ellison's review of Richard Wright's then recently published autobiography, Black Boy, which tells of the author's childhood in Mississippi and coming of age in Chicago. Throughout the essay, Ellison uses the Blues, itself an artistic expression of the Southern African-American experience, as a focal point to examine Black Boy and to place it within the larger context of the historical expression of the collective African-American experience. As Ellison explains, "The Blues is an impulse to keep the painful details and episodes of a brutal experience alive in one's aching consciousness, to finger its jagged grain, and to transcend it, not by the consolation of philosophy, but by squeezing from it a near-tragic, near-comic lyricism. As a form, the Blues is an autobiographical chronicle of personal catastrophe expressed lyrically." He argues that Black Boy is Wright's expression of the struggle of growing up African-American in the United States.. 1st Edition.. Soft Cover. Near Fine.

        The Enchanted Capital of Scotland.

Edinburgh: Plaid Stationery of Scotland Ltd,, [1945]. A Tale of Mystery and Adventure. From a story told by a Merchant of Edinburgh. Octavo. Original blue cloth, lettered in gilt on front board. With the dust jacket, 8/6 price ticket to front flap. Illustrated throughout. Minor rubbing to board extremities, some nicks and tears to dust jacket extremities, small tape repairs to verso, a very good copy. First edition, first impression. "A story written to please the child and perhaps to bring back memories of similar adventures to all who have spent their childhood in Edinburgh". Steele's dialogue is infused with the distinctive Scottish accent and dialect as she retells the story of a group of school children exploring Edinburgh for the first time. The children's imagination conjures up the historical Scottish figures of Mary, Queen of Scots, J. M. Barrie, and Robert Louis Stevenson, "the true guardians of the Castle and of Scotland's memory", to congratulate them on the completion of their quest. With black and white line drawings throughout and four double page colour illustrations, this is an excellent example of Jessie M. King's style. A student at Glasgow School of Art from 1892 to 1899, King was herself influenced by folkloric tales, which can be seen in her work's focus on fantasy. Since the first retrospective shows in the 1970s, King's art has steadily risen in critical and commercial favour.

        Photomontagen zur Zeitgeschichte.

Zürich: "Kultur und Volk",, 1945. Octavo. Original orange paper-covered flexible boards, printed paper label to spine and front board. With the dust jacket. Photographic portrait frontispiece, 21 full-page half-tone plates. Front joint cracked, a few small indentations to top and bottom edges of boards, still a very good copy in the lightly spotted and toned dust jacket, the spine panel with a shallow chip at the head and a long closed tear from the foot just touching two letters, and a further closed tear along the joint between the front panel and flap. First edition, inscribed by the author "To Douglas Newton, with best wishes, John Heartfield, London 1st June 1946" on the front free endpaper. Heartfield was born Helmut Herzfield but assumed an English name as a young political activist in Berlin during the Great War. The plates reproduce some of his most influential anti-Nazi photomontages, originally published in two serials, Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung and Volksillustrierten. Uncommon in the dust jacket.

LAZY THE PIG, And His Chinese Adventures (With figurine and silk pillow)

Ramsay Ware Pub, Melbourne, Australia 1945 - (1945) 1st edition. 8vo., (30) pp., illustrated with text drawings, Paper over pictorial boards. With a Victorian ivory paper weight, modelled as a sleeping pig, the underside stamped A. BARRETT & SONS MANUFACTURERS 63 & 64 PICADILLY, 434873 -- 3in. long sleeping on a red silk pillow. Some soiling and creasing on the book's covers. Company name partial rubbed smooth. The Ivory pig figurine has some minor discoloration and cracking near his hind quarters. A Very Good ivory figure with Good or better book. *** Leila Pirani was a journalist, poet and novelist. As well as children's books, she wrote the librettos and lyrics for a number of musical works for children. It is assumed that she wrote this delightful children's story based on the Victorian ivory pig figurine, perhaps an item from her own childhood. The Ivory figure matches exactly the pig on the cover and drawings in the text. In fact, Lazy the pig is sold at auction in the story, and is owned by a little girl "on the other side of the world".
