BACHELARD Gaston
- s.d. [1944], 22,5x17cm, 15 feuilles. [Click Below for Full Description]

H.P. Lovecraft [ed. August Derleth & Donald Wandrei]
Arkham House, Sauk City. Sauk City, Arkham House, 1944. First Edition. First Impression. A presentable copy. A selection of Lovecraft bits and bobs, including eight essays, two juvenile pieces, six fragmentary pieces (though Joshi notes one is actually bookended by J. Chapman Miske), three pieces Lovecraft revised (written by Zealia Brown Bishop and Hazel Heald), a ghost-written piece for Harry Houdini (who was almost bested by Hope Hodgson, but that's another story). The book concludes with a series of appreciations from the likes of Frank Belknap Long, Clark Ashton Smith, Henry Kuttner and the editors, August Derleth and Donald Wandrei, including one by Winfield Townley Scott which is the first biography of the writer. Illustrated with a handful of photos, including a plan of Arkham by Lovecraft and a letter to Robert Bloch. The book, as attested by the editors, was a stop-gap during the war until they could complete what they thought would be a two volume publication of Lovecraft's 'selected letters'; this later went on to be five volumes. The book presents as a loose collection of oddities but it gives a sense of the writer rather than of his works. An early Arkham publication, the third Lovecraft book from Arkham and the fourth of Lovecraft's books, published seven years after his death. One of 2035 Copies [Currey, p262 Joshi, p29] Marginal wear to the spine tips and corners, a little toning to the jacket, a couple of tear to the spine tips also, not price clipped but having a little pencil note to price. Boards bumped at spine tips. Cover art by Virgil Finlay [5923, H … [Click Below for Full Description]

Though the book had the war starting in 1935 rather than 1939 as it actually did, it became highly regarded after the start of the war, proving him essentially correct. Because of his prescience, he became widely followed, with a popular radio commentary in the U. S. During the war” (Wikipedia 2017) . “The poisonous ambitions Germany has injected into the minds of evil men will not disappear on V-Day, or any other day for many long years to come. Levy, Melvin, and Sidney Harmon [screenwriters]
[Culver City]: Vanguard Films, Inc., 1944. [2],29,[1],10 leaves. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript, printed on rectos only. Bradbound in stencil-printed wrappers. Wrappers chipped at brads, internally about fine. An unproduced (and unpublished) story and treatment for a film set in a camp for German prisoners of war in Missouri, based "on authentic research made available to the authors." This would have been a relatively early film undertaking by the authors. Levy (1902-1980) was an accomplished novelist (most notably the radical novel, THE LAST PIONEERS, 1934), dramatist and activist, and though a victim of the Blacklist, he enjoyed an extended and relatively prolific career in film and television. Harmon (1907 - 1988) had been nominated for a screenwriting Oscar for his story for TALK OF THE TOWN, his first screen credit.

Douglas Southall Freeman
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1944. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good binding/Very Good dust jacket. Signed. The complete First Edition set in three volumes; all with dustjackets; signed by Douglas Southall Freeman on the front endpaper. Bud Robertson writing in the Nevins bibliography calls this study "The ablest descriptive and evaluative study of the leading generals (and their campaigns) in Lee's army; massively documented, movingly written, highly authoritative, and faintly smug" [Nevins I, 30]. For his part, Eicher considers the set to be "brilliantly written volumes [which] deserve to be red by all Civil War students" [Eicher, 971]. A more than presentable First Edition set. There is a previous owner name and address on the front pastedown of the third volume only, suggesting this may be a married set. The dustjackets have some ordinary wear; they are not price-clipped and are now protected with new mylar covers. (Nevins I, 30; Eicher, 971). Very Good binding / Very Good dust jacket.
