Donald Wandrei
Sauk City: Arkham House, 1944. Sauk City: Arkham House. Sauk City, Arkham House, 1944. First Edition. First Impression. Association copy with manuscript material. Signature of Margery Lawrence to the front free endpaper. The manuscript material from Wandrei consists of five single-sided typed sheets comprising the introduction to the book, one single-sided typed sheet comprising the copyright page, one single-sided typed sheet comprising an early draft of the copyright page and a typed sheet outlining the pages needing correction. Numerous minor corrections in pencil by Wandrei. Margery Lawrence was also published by Arkham House (Mycroft & Moran) with the book 'Number Seven Queer Street' in 1959, it was first published in the UK by Hale in 1945. Given that this is one of the earlier Arkham's it does seem a nice association as it would've been one of the books from a publisher who would publish her work some fifteen years later. The dust jacket artwork is by the author's brother. The book itself is in very good condition with some bumping to the spine tips and a little rubbing to the lettering on the spine. The jacket has been reinforced internally with brown tape, and has a little wear, though not too bad given the age. The manuscript material is all in decent shape, with a little toning and a few short tears. Cover art by Howard Wandrei [5973, Hyraxia Books]. . Very Good. Hardback. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1944.

HARRIS, MAX. & REED, JOHN; Editors.
Melbourne; The National Press Pty. Ltd. 1944. First Edition; Demy 4to; pp. [iii], 109; several b/w. illustrations of artwork, original stiff illustrated wrappers, featured on the cover is a Sidney Nolan painting inspired by lines from Ern Malley's poem Petit Testament, original side-stapled, a few very minor tears to margins of a few pages, one marginal note in ink, otherwise an exceptionally fine copy. Erm Malley, is the central figure in Australia's greatest literary hoax, and this edition of Angry Penguins the most famous and sort after edition of any Australian magazine. The 16 poems printed in this edition, were created in one day in 1943 by conservative writers James McAuley, and Harold Stewart in order to hoax Max Harris, and his magazine. Imitating the modernist poetry of the time, which they despised, the hoaxes deliberately created what they thought was bad verse and submitted the poems to Angry Penguins. Harris and his followers fell for the hoax, and enraptured by the poetry, devoted the Autumn issue to Ern Malley. The hoax was revealed soon after, resulting in a cause celebre and the humiliation of Harris. The great irony is that the poems endured as successful examples of surrealist poetry in their own right, and have continued to inspire generations of artists, writers and imitators. To make matters worse , Harris was successfully prosecuted for publishing "indecent matter' as some of the poems were found to be caught under sections of the South Australian police Act. The rarity of this edition may be because the police impounded a large part of the run becau … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Davis, Ruth) Aiken, Howard
First edition, first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by Aiken to fellow computer pioneer Ruth Davis on the front free endpaper, "To Ruth Davis with best regards from Howard Aiken" and also signed by William Main. Trained as a physicist, Howard Aiken was a computer pioneer who designed of IBM's Harvard Mark I to solve the differential equations used in physics research. Installed in 1944, it was first used to solve mathematical problems for the Manhattan Project and was programmed in part by Grace Hopper. The Mark I became the prototype for future supercomputers, including Aiken's follow-ups, Harvard Marks II-IV.Books inscribed by Aiken are rare, and this is an excellent association, as the recipient, Ruth Davis (1928-2012), was "a pioneer in satellites and computers" (The National Academies Press biography). She earned a PhD in mathematics in 1955, the first woman to do so at the University of Maryland, College Park. She then worked for the Navy, where she wrote some of the earliest computer code for Naval nuclear reactors and was a founder of the Navy's Command and Control Technology Organization. Davis served as director of the NBS Institute for Computer Sciences and Technology the HEW National Center for Biomedical Communication. "She rose to become deputy undersecretary of defense for research and advance technology" where she "created some of the earliest computer software for defense and space applications" (National Academies Press). Davis was an early proponent of encryption for non-military uses and initiated important projects on high speed integrated circui … [Click Below for Full Description]

WHEELER R.E. Mortimer
Headley Brothers; London 1944 - A remarkably scarce book - at this present time (July 2014) this is the only copy listed on the internet, and it does not seem to be traced in auction records. Small octavo; an excellent copy of the very uncommon set of fascinating wartime reminiscences and observations from Sir Mortimer Wheeler - probably the most famous British archaeologist of the twentieth century, who was the great Pitt Rivers' most celebrated Oxford protegé, and who also courageously volunteered to serve in both World Wars. Privately published as a 'farewell token' for his friends - as explained in the Foreword - this issue of WW2 personal jottings and verse was very small and is resultingly extremely scarce. In printers' original blue cloth binding with gilt titles on front cover and lightly rubbed ends to the spine and corners, which are unbumped; fresh and completely unmarked and unworn, externally and internally; tight and square, with lightest of wear to the boards; no inscriptions, handling marks or any signs of wartime paper deterioration - so very uncommon to find. The virtually complete original dustwrapper as issued is a rare survival and in very good condition indeed; it is plain cream in colour with no titles, and shows small losses at the head and foot of the spine, and light edgewear to the corners; one or two slight creases, small chips and faint stains are evident. It is not priced or clipped, as no copy was never offered for sale by the eminent and remarkable man who was its author. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
