Paris: Durand, 1944. Fair. Front cover detached and with two clean tears at left edge, some chipping to right edge. Title page missing (?) Age toning in general to other pages, but everything else tight. With a few small notations in pencil, apparently denoting artists whose works the catalogue owner especially wanted to see. The detached cover would look stellar if framed!. Red/white/blue illustrated French patriotic wraps with French blue lettering. 64 pp. with no illustrations. Separate sheet listing the group of surrealist artists exhibiting. A very scarce copy of the catalogue from the first post-liberation Salon d'Automne, held at Salon d'Automne (Paris), 6 Oct. - 5 Nov. 1944. "The Salon d'Automne was established as an alternative to the conservative official Salon. It was also an alternative to the Salon des Indépendants, which was liberal but had a juryless policy that often led to mediocrity. The founders of the Salon d'Automne were a group of artists and poets that included Eugène Carrière, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Georges Rouault, Édouard Vuillard, Joris-Karl Huysmans, and Émile Verhaeren, under the leadership of the architect Frantz Jourdain. They decided to form their own organization with the aims of welcoming any artist who wished to join, selecting a jury for exhibitions by drawing straws from the new group's membership, and giving the decorative arts the same respect accorded the fine arts...The first Salon d'Automne was held on October 31, 1903, at the Petit-Palais. [ Chandler, Raymond]
Los Angeles: RKO Radio Pictures, 1944. Vintage 11 x 14" color studio lobby card. A bit of mild dusting and slight creasing to margins, 2 cm closed tear at top edge mended on verso, some spotting to verso along top edge and small tab of old masking tape at one verso edge; still, a very good, bright example. A striking example of the suitably atmospheric lobby cards promoting this adaptation of Chandler's FAREWELL, MY LOVELY, based on a screenplay by John Paxton, directed by Edward Dmytryk. The release starred Dick Powell, Claire Trevor, Anne Shirley, and Mike Mazurki, among others. The present title was utilized for the release in the US in an attempt to create a distance between "the New Dick Powell!" in this role, and his audience association with more saccharine romantic vehicles. The UK release retained the title, FAREWELL, MY LOVELY.

Associated Press
AP, 5-6 June 1944. More than 130 feet of teletype paper in total, comprising 6 strips, each 8 ½ inches wide, in sections of varying length. Folded down into flat sections 18 inches in length. Minor wear, occasional short tears, faint red ink stain along one edge, last section with full horizontal tear across the text. First announcement of the D-Day landings, perhaps the most important event of the 20th century. This file of teletypes begins on the evening of June 5, 1944, with the recent Allied liberation of Rome. Early on June 6th, breaking news comes across the wire: “The German news agency Transocean says that the Allied invasion has begun.” The reports continue with the first Allied news of the invasion, bulletin 95PA: “Today is D-Day. Allied Armies have landed on the coast of France in the mightiest military invasion ever undertaken. Tough American parachute troops, hardened in the Italian campaign, were the first to land behind Hitler’s Atlantic wall.” The final report of the day is a summary provided by President Roosevelt: “Tremendous forces of Allied tanks and infantry landed this morning along the Normandy coast of France and have battered several miles inland.” “It was unknowable then, but so much of the progress that would define the 20th century, on both sides of the Atlantic, came down to the battle for a slice of beach only 6 miles long and 2 miles wide” (Barack Obama). The long-planned D-Day invasion was shrouded in secrecy. The D in “D-Day” stood simply for “day,” as the actual date of the amphibious landing was not fixed until immediately preceding the op … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sir Eric A. Carpenter [ Sir Eric Ashton Carpenter ] (1896-1973), President of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, banker and industrialist [ Williams Deacon's Bank; South Africa; Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) ]
Manchester Chamber of Commerce Lancashire and other organisations. Almost all and 1956 1944 - Carpenter, who was knighted in 1951, 'For services as President, Manchester Chamber of Commerce', was a leading Manchester industrialist and banker. Among the numerous positions listed in his entry in Who Was Who, he was for 40 years the chairman and managing director of the Manchester cotton manufacturers Greg Brothers & Co., and for 21 years a director of Williams Deacon's Bank (serving as chairman for 12 years), a leading member of the Cotton and Rayon Merchants' Association, the Association of British Chambers of Commerce, and the International Chamber of Commerce. Carpenter held the 'Chamber of Commerce movement' in the highest regard. In his view it sought 'to emulate and preserve the highest traditions on which our commercial reputation has been built up and, so long as free enterprise provides the backbone of the economy of this country, [ ] a potent influence', depending 'for fulfilment of its mission on the willingness of men to give voluntarily of their time, knowledge and experience for the common good backed always by efficient and painstaking staffs'. The present collection of Carpenter's speeches, papers and related material, covering a wide range of topics, is a significant resource, providing the informed view of a leading industrialist on the economic and industrial climate in the north of England in the immediate post-war period, as well as casting valuable light on the workings of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce and other trade bodies at the time. Ezra Pound
s.e. (Tipografia Moderna), s.l. (Rapallo), 1944. In 8 (cm 17 x 24), pp. 22 (il frontespizio e' compreso nella numerazione delle pagine). Opuscolo privo di legatura all'origine. ITA

[SWISS]. WENGER, Lisa (illustrator).
Bern; Verlag von A. Francke AG., circa 1944. Long slim landscape 16mo. (106 x 306mm); original yellow cloth-backed pictorial boards; ff. [16]; with 15 fine colour-lithographed plates by Lisa Wenger; a near fine copy with very slight fading to spine cloth and a few light speckles to upper board. Early edition; first published in 1908 and printed here by Kümmerly & Frey, Bern. This famous picture book with its distinctive narrow and elongated format, and text in Swiss-German dialect, is one of the most recognised Swiss children's books. The origins of the story are traditional but appear to trace their roots back to "Chad Gadja", a song from the Jewish Haggadah which is delivered at the end of the festival of Pesscha. There is great similarity of content in the two texts including the appearance of a dog, stick, fire, water, oxen and a butcher. In the first edition an executioner appears but the publisher dropped this from the second edition (which appeared in the build-up to the First World War). The story concerns a lazy lad who is sent out to collect pears by his master but who prefers to take a nap in the long grass.

Valentine, Jr. Dec 25, 1934" in the margin; underneath is a pencil annotation reading, "Me." Valentine born in 1923, lived in Gouldtown until his death in 1977. It traces its roots to the 1700s when a freedman named Benjamin Gould married a Finnish woman. Community lore holds that in the mid-1700s two mixed-race brothers, who were previously indentured servants, arrived from the West Indies, settled near the Goulds and began families of their own after purchasing the passage of two "mail-order-brides" from the Netherlands. Shortly thereafter, a mixed-race couple (white and Native American) arrived from Cape May. It was descendants of these four families that formed … [Click Below for Full Description]
