Edwards, Dana W.
Archive of 622 letters, over 2.700 manuscript pages, with envelopes, includes a 40 page diary of Elinor E. Weber, plus 20 postcards, photographs, and other ephemeral material. The correspondence in this collection details the lives and relationship of Dana W. Edwards and Elinor E. Weber, before during and after the War, in which Pfc. Edwards was killed while being held as a Prisoner of War during the Battle of the Bulge. The collection includes their courtship letters, while he was a student studying music at Boston University. The collection also includes a sexually explicit diary kept by Elinor during the couple's first three months of marriage (June-August 1944), the letters after the couples marriage are laden with sexual innuendo. The collection also includes official military paperwork and letters concerning the death of Dana W. Edwards, and with condolence letters. There is also a group of correspondence between Elinor and a French family that Pfc. Edwards befriended during his brief wartime experience in France, plus over 50 paper ephemeral items, including several photographs of Edwards, his army buddies and the French family. The correspondence begins on July 6, 1939 with Dana Edwards's first letter to his future wife Elinor. He is working a summer job and preparing to go to college in the fall. CINEMA] NICHOLS, DUDLEY, ET AL.
Mostly dating from 1944, the subject of the film, Elizabeth Kenny writes several letters to screenwriter Dudley Nichols, regarding, among other things, the star Rosalind Russell, as well as the claims of Mary McCarthy as an author of the screenplay. In all, there are four letters, seven closely typed pages in total, all but one signed by Kenny. In addition, there are two typed letters, signed, from Russell to Nichols, one dating from 1953 regarding the treatment of polio. In a two page typed letter, signed, Nichols complains bitterly to the editors of Time on its treatment of the medical aspects presented in the film. There are several other items, carbons, telegrams, clippings, and letters touching on the film. Primarily remembered and celebrated for her brilliant comic roles in Auntie Mame and His Girl Friday, Russell was a fine dramatic actress, nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in this movie. The archive is in excellent condition; in a custom quarter-leather clamshell box. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted. HAMMETT, DASHIELL
Dating from July 31, 1944 - July 5, 1945, typed single space (one letter is typed at one and a half spaces) on thin, air mail paper. Three of the letters are two pages, and the rest are one page each. One letter is signed “Dash,” and the rest in pen and in pencil as “SDH.” There are a few small corrections in Hammett’s hand and an occasional note in Mrs. Whitfield’s, who was married to Hammett’s friend and hard-boiled writing colleague, Raoul Whitfield. The letters reflect Hammett’s warm, intimate feelings for the recipient, and are mostly filled with cheery chat and stories of idle, lonely army life. “I’ve been half-seriously monkeying with the notion of doing --or trying --a longish poem that would be called ‘The Aleutians Don’t Give A Damn’...This notion too...will likely as not be put away in the drawer marked Projects thought up in the absence of women, which is already pretty full...Tonight I’m going to treat myself to a tub bath, the first in about fifteen months, and if I can remember how it’s done I expect to have a very luxurious [letter crossed out] time of it. It’s little things like that which make up the lives of those soldiers who are not encouraged to kill anybody...Having gone without glasses for a week or so...I now find I don’t need glasses nearly as much as I used to...Do you suppose I’m growing younger?...It would be nice to start all over and to be able to make all the same mistakes again, though probably in slightly different form...I’m having a lot of fun with the novel-notions...but...not yet ready to start prod … [Click Below for Full Description]
