Ivan "Goran" KOVACIC (Kovatchitch) (1913 - 1943), Author; Edo MURTIC (1921–2005), Illustrator; Zlatko PRICA (1916-2003), Illustrator.
4°, 26 pp. with printed title and 25 lithographed text pages with illustrations within text, bound in parachute linen with lithographed title (Very Good, slightly age toned, tiny tears in margins). - [Topusko, Croatia: Naprjed] Izdanje kluba kulturnih radnika Hrvatske [Publishing House of Cultural Workers of Croatia] [End of November] 1944. In 1942 he joined the Partisans and participated in battles through the difficult terrain of Bosnia. In the months of seeing cruel battles and slaughtering of civilians, he wrote his most famous poem Jama (The Pit). This epic poem was inspired by a genocide made by the Croatian Nationalistic Army, Ustashe, upon the Serbian people. In first person, with cruel, yet beautiful verses, he describes torture, and eventual death as a part of mass killings. In 1943, only 30 year old Kova?i? was killed in Case Black – a joint attack by the Axis, which aimed to destroy the main Yugoslav Partisan force in Bosnia, mostly known by its final phase final phase, the Battle of the Sutjeska. After the battle of Sutjeska, Kova?i? was hiding in a farmhouse, weakened by a lung illness, listening the Serbian Nationalist Army Chetniks killing wounded Partisans. Eventually he was also tracked down by Chetniks, slaughtered and buried in an unmarked grave. Kova?i?’s death was accepted by the Partisans with great sadness. The journalist and politician Moša Pijade (1890-1957) described his death: "Goran Kova?i? did not survive the horrendous fifth offensive. This young Croatian poet, who in "The Pit" formed the strongest poem of a protest against the … [Click Below for Full Description]

MALLEY, Ern. [pseud. James McAuley & Harold Stewart.]
Melbourne & Adelaide: Reed & Harris, 1944 - Small square octavo. Original wrappers, title in white to front wrapper. Wrappers sunned to spine and around edges, but a smart copy, sound, clean and in excellent condition. Frontispiece reproducing in black and white Sidney Nolan's painting, facsimile of Ethel Malley's letter. First book edition, first printing, of the poems that constituted one of the great literary hoaxes of the century. The collection of poems first appeared in a special commemorative Autumn 1944 number (actually June) of Angry Penguins, Australia's leading modernist literary magazine, who had had the poems submitted to their offices with a cover letter by an Ethel Malley, claiming to have found them in the effects of her recently deceased brother, Ern Malley. Angry Penguins took the bait beautifully, and published the poems with a portentous introduction by editor Maxwell Henry Hastings, opening: "Ern Malley prepared for his death quietly confident that he was a great poet, and that he would be known as such." In fact, there were neither an Ethel nor any Ern, but two poets, James McAuley (1917-76) and Harold Stewart (1916-95), who wished to pull the leg of a literary establishment they saw as pretentious and misled. The hoax was quickly exposed in the Sydney Sunday Sun, and this scarce first book issue of The Darkening Ecliptic was issued shortly after by Reed & Harris, adding a facsimile of Ethel Malley's letter, and issuing a new publisher's statement which included McAuley & Stewart's tart confession of themselves as the authors and their justification of … [Click Below for Full Description]

SINATRA, Frank & Al Silvani.
California: c.1944 - 5 "10 × 8" glossy promo photos - 2 of Sinatra and Silvani together, signed and inscribed; one of Sinatra's soft-ball team the Swooners, annotated by Sinatra verso; an unsigned Sinatra promo; and one of Rocky Marciano receiving a foot-rub during a training camp at Grossinger's in '53; together with one "5 × 7" club table photograph of Sinatra, Silvani and "Slapsie" Maxie Rosenbloom, perhaps also at Grossinger's, and a smaller format satin-finsh early promo photograph of Sinatra by James Kriegsmann Overall a little used, both of the two "signed and inscribeds" with a small piece torn from a corner, no loss of image or autograph, one of these with a clean closed tear in from the lower margin, no loss, the unsigned "10 × 8" also with a small piece torn from the margin, as also the Marciano, but they remain all about very good. Al Silvani was a childhood friend of Sinatra's, had a moderately successful career as a boxing trainer, at various times looking after Jake La Motta, Henry Armstrong, Carmen Basilio, Fritzie Zivic, Pone Kingpetch, Rocky Graziano, Ingemar Johansson, and Lou Ambers, he worked as Robert De Niro's trainer for Raging Bull; "moonlighted" as one of Sinatra's bodyguards; worked as an actor and stuntman in a number of movies, many of them Sinatra vehicles; and generally hung with the Rat Pack. The two signed photographs - Sinatra inscribes "Sincerely Frank Sinatra" - are inscribed by Silvani to his brother Joe, who boxed for a few years in the mid-20s, compiling a tidy losing record, of 3-9-1 and one no contest, two of the losses and the so … [Click Below for Full Description]

LIEUTENANT (JG) G.H. PENN
MIOS WOENDI, AMSTERDAM ISLAND SOUTH PACIFIC: (1944). 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. On offer is an original, very unusual, very different kind of manuscript relic of World War II and America's war in the South Pacific being a log book for "Malaria Control Team 28" handwritten by, we believe, Lieutenant (JG) G.H. Penn, detailing his mission primarily at M.T.B. Base 21 on Mios Woendi Island from 3 July 1944 to 10 August 1944, and at Advance Base 3 on Amsterdam Island from August 1944 to 21st February 1945. [Lt. Penn we can safely assume was a scientist within the field of Malaria control and mosquito life given that we found some post War references to his published contributions on the subjects.] The log is a fascinating blend of scientific data detailing efforts by US armed forces to systematically test for, identify, treat and eliminate tropical diseases, including malaria, primarily on the Pacific Islands of Mios Woendi and Amsterdam Island and diary narrative bordering on forensics and detective work such as hunting through garbage dumps and disposals, 'heads' etc. for maggots and larval specimens, lab work and much more with the back drop of the War at a very intense time; constant raids and attacks by Japanese aircraft and kamikaze pilots, dealing with casualties from the USS Orestes after it was hit by a kamikaze and much more in the 64 full hand-written pages. Historians and researchers of the American war effort in the South Pacific will all too well recognize the utter importance of malarial control at the time given the debilitating effects that the disease could w … [Click Below for Full Description]

DORIS TIBBELS
BALTIMORE MARYLAND TO NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA: Manuscript. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. On offer is a large archive of 150+ original 1944-1946 manuscript letters handwritten by adoring wife and new mother Doris Tibbels of Baltimore Maryland whose homey, loving letters make for an intimate look into the home front life of this charmingly head over heels in love with her adored 26 year old serviceman husband. Even when he is in Maryland at the Edgewood Arsenal and coming home many times she is still somewhat desperate in her detachment. Later while she writes of family and friends and her doings in Baltimore as the War winds down her husband is still active in New Orleans at the Special Chemical Detachment readers will feel her longing in a palpable way as if each letter is an attempt to draw him to her. She continually tells him she needs him to function in what some men might feel is a cloying manner. That said it is remarkable that she maintains the level of adoration over the years correspondence. Nearly every letter starts with whether it is a happy day or a sad day for receipt of his letters. We learn from the addresses that Charles is a T/5 or Technician Fifth Grade. Included ephemera includes clippings, holiday and birthday cards, military passes, laundry receipts, some small photographs adding further breadth to the group. Overall G+. Good+.

LONDON ENGLAND GREAT BRITAIN UK: (1944). 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. On offer is a sensational, original manuscript notebook handwritten during the summer of 1944 in London during the horrible 'Buzz Bomb' onslaught or V1 campaign that began in June of 1944 by Nazi Germany. Not merely a home front diary filled with 60 pages of street view entries of life and living conditions during the awful summer of 1944 from an astonishing woman in even more astonishing circumstances along with the back drop of death coming from the air from July 26th through to August 22nd this not quite month long diary is a treasure of emotion, a significant memoir of the time and a couple of movies rolled into one. The unidentified author, a woman of education, practicality and sensuality, she is also a symbol of British steadfastness and the 'keep calm and carry on' spirit that propelled England in its determination to defeat the Germans. The definition of indomitable she begins the journal: July 26th 'It might be a good idea to find out just exactly where I am and start this new volume in an assessment of things. There are still bombs and there will be more. I still do not like them but am contemptuous rather than frightened and without any defiance but just plain feeling I would prefer to die rather than run from them. All this is not without its bad effects. I work hard. Too hard because the nervous strain is quite out of proportion. WADI NATRUN EGYPT: (1944). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is a sensational, historically significant 25 page manuscript diary handwritten by an unidentified British soldier, likely an Officer, during WWII while on leave. He was in Egypt and spent several days touring a number of Coptic Monasteries in the Wadi Natrun area and does a super job detailing the tour he and his friend Arthur Helm [who we believe became a noted New Zealand explorer and author and was also a hero to the nation of Greece for his contribution to the war effort there in 1941 and the failed Crete campaign. A massive memorial in New Zealand was inspired by Mr. Helm's efforts] and their camel 'George' took. [Readers whether historians or researchers will treasure his narrative style and his descriptions of all he saw especially given the fact that there were once as many as 300 Coptic monasteries in Egypt and now there are but a handful.] That said we note a homophobic slur that reflects the times and attitudes of many. Here are some snippets: "A Night in a Coptic Monastery: Friday, 31st, March 1944. I am writing these notes by the light of a candle in the guest room of the Coptic Monastery of Deir Syrins in the desert depression of Wadi Natrun, half way between Cairo and Alexandria Egypt. It is 7 o'clock and everything is still except for the low moaning of some monks chanting in the Eastern fashion at the other side of the monastery. There is a half moon and from the window of the guest room the monastic buildings present a fine scene with their white walls bathed in the silver light." BACHELARD Gaston Complete autograph manuscript of his preface to The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym by Edgar Allan Poe "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym is one of the great books about the human heart."The handsome complete autograph manuscript signed by Gaston Bachelard of the prefeace to The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym by Edgar Allan Poe, re-published by Stock in 1944. 15 leaves in black ink with a few pencil notes by author. Numerous underlinings, deletions and corrections. This is the second study that Gaston Bachelard devoted to Poe's work, the first - in part - being included in L'Eau et les Rêves, essai sur l'imagination de la matière [Water and Dreams, an Essay on the Imagination ofMatter], published two years before. Bachelard was Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at the Sorbonne at the time and was head of the Institute of the History of Science.Poe's enigmatic maritime tale and its abrupt and incoherent ending gave rise to a number of theories of interpretation, especially in France (including from Marie Bonaparte, Léon Lemonnier, Jorge Luis Borges, and Jean Ricardou). Arthur Gordon Pym's Antarctic odyssey explores the dark relationship between Man and the cosmos, "the drama of Man confronted with the world" as Bachelard says. Bachelard's psychoanalytical approach is an introduction to the text and invites the reader to attempt a "double reading ", already tried by some (including Marie Bonaparte in her Freudian analysis of the text) which tries to uncover the hidden psychological depths of this adventure novel.Bachelard highlights in his prefac … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gaston BACHELARD
" - s.d. [1944], 22,5x17cm, 15 feuilles. [Click Below for Full Description]

Stravinsky, Igor. (1882-1971)
1944. An interesting wartime TLS from the great composer, addressed to a Monsieur le Bourg, asking him to send on a list of Stravinsky's news to his son in Europe. Dated April 6, 1944. 8.5 x 11 inches.Translated from the French, in part: ".Since my son is anxious to have new news, may I ask you to give him the following messages: 1) Very happy to know that my daughter has been released? and her decision to marry without delay. I await the confirmation of this event with great impatience. 2) I wonder if Mme. Milhaud, who died in January, left orders with her associate in Switzerland, P. Rosa, a cousin of Darius, to continue payments to my daughter Milene. Otherwise I cannot explain the recent payment made to Milene which Theodore tells me about. [.] 4) As to us, thanks to God, we are very well. We see Nadia Boulanger, who is staying with the Arthur Sachs family near here, in Santa Barbara, occasionally. I had a group of very successful concerts in Boston in January, where my Symphony (the 5 year old one), as well as my new compositions (written 2 years ago), the 'Four Norwegian Moods' and the 'Circus Polka"; the radio program had considerable success. At the beginning of the season Koussevitsky conducted my Ode, a 3-part composition written in memory of his wife, who died a year ago. If I could send microphotos of my recent compositions to Switzerland, I would have done so long ago. The group followed an anti-war philosophy and held peace rallies against the war raging in Europe but the attack on Pearl Harbor changed their minds with most enlisting in the war effort. The newsletter, edited by Eli Drapkin (1918-2006) while stationed at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, was a means to keep up with friends dispersed across the globe.
