A Directory of every Resident and Business of BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA, 1944. Published by R. L. Polk & Company, Richmond, Virginia. This is the Original, Vintage Directory published in 1944. Original hardcovers, printed cloth covered boards and spine, 9x12 inches, thick volume, 1148 total pages (pages numbered in sections). Contains numerous advertisements of the day. These directories were published as advertising vehicles so ads are everywhere, including on the covers and page edges. This volume was part of the amazing SUTRO GENEALOGICAL LIBRARY of SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. There is a Sutro Library bookplate on the front pastedown, and Sutro Library ink stamps and associated library marks and stamps here and there throughout. The Sutro Library was (and to a large part still is) a treasure trove of genealogical books collected by Adolph Sutro and donated to the City of San Francisco. The collection was pretty much neglected by the City until, in 2012 the City gave the collection to the library of San Francisco State University. Before and after the move to SFSU, quite a few volumes from the Sutro genealogical library were, sadly, deaccessioned, so that the collection would fit it into its new space. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Liebling, A. J.
Doubleday, Doran and Company, Garden City, New York 1944 - The true, stated first edition--so uncommon thus that people sometimes suppose it doesn't exist. An excellent, bright, near fine copy, with a prior owner's signature on the half-title. (Produced underwartime conditions, this book has no blank leaves excepting one at the end of the text; the half-title is the first leaf following the illustrated endpaper.) The dustjacket is very good, with the original $3.00 price intact--moderately edgeworn, with small losses at the corners and spine ends. A handsome copy of a scarce book. Washington, D.C. 1944 - 1 page, 10.5 x 8 inches, Washington, D.C., April 21, 1944. In this letter, Barkley clarifies his disagreement with the President over his veto of the tax bill and defends himself against the recipient's published letter wrongly stating that Barkley had called Roosevelt "dishonest, insincere, and degrading." In part, "I made no statement whatever in my speech in New York regarding a fourth term. I made a Democratic speech and spoke in some detail of the record of the Roosevelt administration. My disagreement with the President over his veto of the tax bill was a sincere and genuine disagreement on a single subject, but it did not mean that I repudiated the whole record of his administration which I myself have helped to make. When you say in your letter that I called Roosevelt dishonest, insincere and degrading, you make a complete misstatement. If you would have taken the trouble to read my speech you would know that I made no such statement.it is stupid to assume because I disagreed with him about that [veto] that I disagreed with him about everything else." Portion of the original free-franked envelope pasted to the back of the letter; paper clip stain on the top edge. Very good(-) condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, 1944. 4to. Original pre-publication typescript, hectographt print, printed on rectos only. In original red printed wrappers with black cloth spine. Paley Johanson's copy, with his owner's name and inscription to top of front wrapper: Paley Johnson/ Dept. of Colloid Science/ Free School Lane/ Cambridge". A few smaller nicks and creases to front wrapper, otherwise a fine clean copy. (2), 135 ff. ¶ Scarce pre-publication typescript, with an excellent provenance, of Schrödinger's important attempt at developing a simple, unified standard method of dealing with all cases of statistical thermodynamics, developed in his seminar lectures of the Dublin institute for advanced studies in January - March 1944. A very small edition of the lectures was published in hectograph form by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies [offered item]. In 1952 the first public printing, differing a bit from the hectograph printing, of the lectures appeared - in a book of the same title. That highly popular book was printed in large numbers. <br><br>"The idea of this seminar is to develop briefly one simple, unified standard method, capable of dealing, without changing the fundamental attitude, with ALL cases (classical, quantum, Bose-Einstein, Fermi-Dirac, etc.) and with every new problem that may turn up. The interest is focused on the general procedure, and examples are dealt with as illustrations thereof. Not a first introduction for new-comers to the subject is intended, rather a 'repetitorium'. The wording is extremely shortened about well-known stories to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gotha, Justus Perthes, 1944. (noch zu Nr.11813:) \". .
