1944. 2 vintage, contemporary mimeographic pages. 11 names added to the list by unknown hand in ink. Lists more than 100 survivors, their dates of birth and addresses. Most of the people were from Budapest. The Türkheim KZ or Kaufering VI was a subcamp of Dachau concentration camp, it was in operation from October 1944. The camp was liberated by the US troops on 27 April, 1945, however the Commandant of Türkheim, SS-Oberscharführer Karl Hofmann opened the gates on 26 April, and most of the prisoners could flee into the woods. Within 10 months about 30,000 prisoners went through the 11 Kaufering camps, most of them were Hungarian or Romanian Jews, and survivors of the Polish and Lithuanian ghettos. In the larger camps about 3,000-4,000 people were detain, in the smaller camps - like Türkheim - a few hundred at times. In mid April 1945 most of the Kaufering camps were evacuated. Some prisoners were taken to Dachau others forced to go on a death march to Upper Bavaria. The International Red Cross estimated the number of death at 14,500 among the Kaufering prisoners. Minnis, Frank B.
India And Myanmar, 1944-1945. India And Myanmar. 1944-1945. 9” x 11”. String tied, full faux leather with hand painted title, name and trident design on front cover. 50 pages with 189 black and white photographs mostly inserted into corner mounts. An additional 12 photos and 13 items of ephemera laid in. Most photos measure from 1¾” x 1¼” to 3¾” x 4¾” and nearly all are captioned on the pages. Album very good with moderate wear, painted elements faint; photos generally very good or better. Around 15 are loose from mounts, 10 have exposure issues and six appear to be lacking but presumably are among the ones laid in. This is the wartime service album of Frank Minnis, supply sergeant for the 1888th Engineer Aviation Battalion. The battalion was formed April 1, 1943 at Florida's MacDill Field and arrived in India in March of 1944 to build a B-29 facility. According to a retained copy of a commendation letter in the album, their work here led to the first bombing of industrial Japan. After India, they were sent to Burma to work on the storied Ledo Road. The road, later renamed the Stillwell Road, was built as a response to the Japanese capture of the Burma Road—a key supply line between India and China. It was considered an engineering miracle due to the conditions the men faced: working in swamps constantly exposed to malaria and typhus, as well as on mountainsides with elevations up to 5,000 feet. Of the 15,000 men who worked around the clock to build the road, around 9,000 of them were African American. Over 1100 men died in its construction and the blac … [Click Below for Full Description]

BEAUVOIR (Simone de)
Paris, Gallimard, Coll. [Click Below for Full Description]

MALLEY, Ern. [pseud. James McAuley & Harold Stewart.]
Melbourne & Adelaide: Reed & Harris, [June] 1944. Melbourne & Adelaide: Reed & Harris,, [June] 1944. 1944 Autumn Number to Commemorate the Australian Poet. Small quarto sized magazine, original wrappers with text in black to front and back and colour Nolan illustration to front wrapper. Chips to corners with some loss to wrappers at spine ends, split to rear wrapper repaired, red stain to rear wrapper, a good copy. First edition, in the very scarce original Angry Penguins issue, of the poems that constituted one of the great literary hoaxes of the century. Ern Malley's Darkening Ecliptic made its first appearance in this special commemorative Autumn 1944 number (actually June) of Angry Penguins, Australia's leading modernist literary magazine, who had had the poems submitted to their offices with a cover letter by an Ethel Malley, claiming to have found them in the effects of her recently deceased brother, Ern Malley. Angry Penguins took the bait beautifully, and published the poems with a portentous introduction by editor opening: "Ern Malley prepared for his death quietly confident that he was a great poet, and that he would be known as such." In fact, there was no Ethel nor any Ern, but two poets, James McAuley (1917-1976) and Harold Stewart (1916-1995), who wished to pull the leg of a literary establishment they saw as pretentious and misled. The hoax was quickly exposed in the Sydney Sunday Sun, and McAuley and Stewart made a tart statement exposing themselves as the authors and justifying the fraud: "What we wished to find out was can those who write and those who s … [Click Below for Full Description]

[World War II]: [African Americans in the Military]: Lomax, John B.
Mostly Camp Guernsey, Wy, 1944. Fifty-four silver gelating photographs, mostly 2 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches, a small panoramic photograph, 4 x 10 inches, and a photostatic copy of discharge papers. Removed from an album, with paper remnants on verso, minor edge wear, some surface wear to panorama. Overall very good. An intriguing collection of photographs documenting the African- American soldiers of the 3067 Quartermaster Salvage Collecting Company, with almost all of the photographs annotated with humorous remarks and identifications on the verso of the images. The small panorama pictures the entire African-American unit standing proudly behind their four white officers. Salvage companies, sometimes employing Axis P.O.W.s, retrieved discarded or abandoned materiel, both friendly and hostile, and were often responsible for the re- burial of Allied dead. A copy of discharge papers belonging to John B. Lomax and accompanying the present photographs suggest that he is the compiler and annotater. Most of the photographs picture the men of the 3067 in uniform, and in the snow, at Camp Guernsey in Wyoming, though a few of the photographs likely show the men in service in Europe or on their way there, with a tropical backdrop to more than one image. The men clown around outside the mess hall, pose outside barracks after visiting the rifle range, stand at attention with rifles, sit in Jeeps, stand casually in the snow, and more. The annotations note several other soldiers by name or nickname, including Overton ("Old saw dust brain"), Ben, Taylor, Johnny Boy, "Old Spraglin," Veasy ("Th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vence, 29. II, 1944. 4to. 2 pp. 8vo. 4pp. Interesting letter to the French writer Henry de Montherlant (1895-1972) about the collaboration of two projects that Monterlant proposed to Matisse. He is happy to have been able to help Montherlant to fight his insomnia. He encourages him to do gymnastics and promises not to talk about homeopathy anymore, since he does it perfectly, that this medicine is not yet recognized ?et même niée par les pontifes de l?Académie? - Then he comes to Montherlant's project around photographs of female nudes: ?Votre départ sur les photos de nus féminins m?amuse?. Offset Lithograph (Very Good) 34,5 x 24,5 cm (13.6 x 9.7 inches), 1944. [Warsaw: Tajne Wojskowe Zak?ady Wydawnicze przy ulicy Chmielnej [Secret Military Publishers on Chmielna Street] beginning of August 1944]. or short after WWII A rare smaller version of a famous Polish WWII resistance poster was made in the summer in 1944 in Warsaw, in the first days of the Warsaw Uprising, and by a secret military publishing house. Original from the war, or printed shortly after WWII. The poster showcasing a young man with with a gun and a flag was printed at the beginning of the August in Warsaw during WWII by the Home Army, a resistance movement. It was issued in the first days of the Warsaw Uprising to mobilize people to join the resistance and fight against the German ocupator. Beside the more famous large version (100 x 70 cm), which was mounted on walls of Warsaw streets, probably also a smaller version, this one, was produced, which was distributed per hand. We habve encountered similar cases in the propaganda printing of WWII. The survival rate of such flyers would be very small. This version of the poster differs from the large one in details of the lines, which were adjusted to the smaller format. This small version does not seem to be recorded, although the paper and thick off-set printig suggest 1940s. It is possible the flyer was made shortly after WWII as a souvenir. Under the later Soviet rule such underground flyiers, calling people to uprising, woud be surpressed. Much later reproductions of this smaller version are known, but the quality of printing and paper differs f … [Click Below for Full Description]

Included is her coverless spiral bound scrapbook; her confidential travel orders; a photo of OSS agents in China including Director William "Wild Bill" Donovan; a first edition of her memior, *Undercover Girl*; and a later Inscribed photo of her meeting with President Bill Clinton. Overall about very good with moderate wear to the scrapbook pages edge and some dampstaining; mailing creases on her travel orders, and a near fine copy of her book in very good, chipped dustwrapper. Elizabeth MacDonald was a member of the OSS, the precursor of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), operating out of New Delhi and Calcutta in India and later at the OSS China headquarters in Kunming during World War II. Her background made her an ideal candidate for the OSS. While making small talk with an Army major at an agriculture exhibit she was covering for the Scripps Howard News Service, she mentioned that she grew up in Hawaii, had lived in Manilla, spoke fluent Japanese, and was a newspaper reporter, the officer immediately pulled three application blanks from his briefcase and offered her an opportunity "to make a great contribution to the war effort [even though] he couldn't explain the type of work because it was secret." This archive consists of material from shortly before and after MacDonald's recruitment by the OSS, as documented by her 38-page scrapbook-photo album filled with ephemer … [Click Below for Full Description]

BACHELARD Gaston
- s.d. [1944], 22,5x17cm, 15 feuilles. [Click Below for Full Description]

Minnis, Frank B.
1944-1945, India And Myanmar. 9" x 11". String tied, full faux leather with hand painted title, name and trident design on front cover. 50 pages with 189 black and white photographs mostly inserted into corner mounts. An additional 12 photos and 13 items of ephemera laid in. Most photos measure from 1¾" x 1¼" to 3¾" x 4¾" and nearly all are captioned on the pages. Over 1100 men died in its construction and the black soldiers' efforts were not recognized by the gove … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
