[Paris 1944 - 12 sepia-toned gelatin-silver photographs. Each image is 7.25" x 5.25". Photos are numbered 1-12, and each is captioned in ink, in detail on the verso. All of the images are dated 25 August 1944. The first two are noted as being at 2:00 and 2:30 pm; the other 10 are noted as being between 4:00 and 5:00 pm. The building on the right belongs to the Louvre; it is known as Pavillon de Flore. The black smoke is coming from tanks and turrets. Note the book-sellers stands that are closed." The second image shows the same scene with increasing black smoke: "The fight is turning into a real battle as Leclerc's Shermans start firing their guns. One after the other the German Tigers are knocked out and set ablaze." The following image show the first Allied Troops entering the city. At 4:05 the caption notes: "The fight has been over for a few minutes.", and shows a Sherman tank and a Red Cross truck with a few citizens coming out. The next images shows the Rue de Castiglione with abandoned German vehicles and awash in citizens, Leclerc's Moroccan troops entering the city on a troop carrier, one of Leclerc's Shermans with a priest on a bicycle; a group of "300 German prisoners caught in the Tuileries.", crowds beginning to gather in La Place de la Concorde Suisse, and other scenes from the area.Housed in an envelope marked in pencil "au Major Dunbaugh, " which we have not been able to definitively identify.         [Photo Album]: On Board the U.S.S. Mariposa

1944-1947. Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 13". String-tied black leather. Contains 190 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.75" x 2.5" and 8" x 11", with captions and 20 pictorial postcards. Very good photo album with some mustiness, rubbing, and slight edgewear with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a sailor while serving on board the S.S. Mariposa and S.S. Aberdeen Victory during and after World War II between 1944 and 1947. The album begins with photos of the Mariposa docked in Newport News, Virginia in 1945 followed by a large photo of the S.S. Aberdeen Victory in Marseille in 1947 with a caption that reads, "went around the world in this ship." One page includes a collection of portrait photos of young women he met on his travels with their location captioned under the photo including the Philippines, Brazil, Panama, and England. The Mariposa is photographed thoroughly including the rigging, kitchen, sleeping quarters, and upper decks. One section is captioned "Life Aboard S.S. Mariposa (when not working)" and shows the men "getting the sun" and playing a game they created called "Fork-U." There are also photos from the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean featuring the North Atlantic in winter and the Rock of Gibraltar. The Pacific Ocean is also pictured with photos of a "goony bird following the ship" and an "island in the distance on the Pacific." The Aberdeen is also photographed in a section titled "Aberdeen Victory views 1947" which shows the church altar aboard the ship and "unloading by crane in Bombay." The men of the Aberdeen are also seen washing clothes and peeling potatoes. The crew enjoyed time off the ship as well, and photos of leave in the Panama Canal Zone are featured. They went to bars including the Florida club and flirted with local girls. When traveling past San Francisco the compiler photographed Alcatraz and the Army docks where the Navy ships were kept. The sailor also collected a number of pictorial postcards from his stop in Hawaii which feature Hawaiian tropical foliage, scenes of life on the island, and various landmarks. While in Hawaii he photographed Wakiki beach and downtown Honolulu with images of street scenes and buildings. Much of his time was spent island hopping in the Pacific to places such as Pago Pago in American Samoa, the Philippines, and Fiji where they spent a majority of their time in Suva. These photos show native houses, beaches, and the local people of the islands. One well-composed photo shows sailors walking up the docks with the Mariposa in the background; another shows their sister ship in the docks at Suva. While in Suva the compiler also photographed the local policemen in uniform, the botanical gardens, and the hotel. One photo shows an aerial view of people on a beach and is captioned "war brides and visitors on dock." Later in the album there are professional images of a volcanic eruption in New Guinea which took place in 1937. Another section of professional photos shows before and after shots of Manila depicting the effects of World War II. Photos from Brisbane, Australia show docks with the Mariposa's imposing hull in view as well as a seaplane flying over head. The city of Brisbane is also seen throughout with photos of shops and people of the area. They also stopped at Penang Island in the Malayan Straits which features photos of children, temples, and native workers. The final pages are from India and Ceylon with photos of dances, buildings, and a guide with a camel. An extensive collection of photographs detailing a sailor's time with the Navy at the end of World War II. .

WW II UNDERGROUND PRINTING - POETRY & FINE ART: JAMA [THE PIT].

4°, 26 pp. with printed title and 25 lithographed text pages with illustrations within text, bound in parachute linen with lithographed title (Very Good, slightly age toned, tiny tears in margins). - [Topusko, Croatia: Naprjed] Izdanje kluba kulturnih radnika Hrvatske [Publishing House of Cultural Workers of Croatia] [End of November] 1944. In 1942 he joined the Partisans and participated in battles through the difficult terrain of Bosnia. In the months of seeing cruel battles and slaughtering of civilians, he wrote his most famous poem Jama (The Pit). This epic poem was inspired by a genocide made by the Croatian Nationalistic Army, Ustashe, upon the Serbian people. In first person, with cruel, yet beautiful verses, he describes torture, and eventual death as a part of mass killings. In 1943, only 30 year old Kova?i? was killed in Case Black – a joint attack by the Axis, which aimed to destroy the main Yugoslav Partisan force in Bosnia, mostly known by its final phase final phase, the Battle of the Sutjeska. After the battle of Sutjeska, Kova?i? was hiding in a farmhouse, weakened by a lung illness, listening the Serbian Nationalist Army Chetniks killing wounded Partisans. Eventually he was also tracked down by Chetniks, slaughtered and buried in an unmarked grave. Kova?i?’s death was accepted by the Partisans with great sadness. The journalist and politician Moša Pijade (1890-1957) described his death: "Goran Kova?i? did not survive the horrendous fifth offensive. This young Croatian poet, who in "The Pit" formed the strongest poem of a protest against the Ustasha massacres against the Serbs, was killed by "Serbian vigilante" Chetnik degenerates, these Swabian and Ustasha allies. They cut the throat, which had so sincerely and strongly thundered from the Croatian fraternal soul against Ustasha crimes against Serbian youth. Never before a more honest and humane work of a poet was punished and never a forehead of a murderer was tainted by more disgraceful crime. Reading the Goran's "Jama", hearts of generations and generations of Serbian youth will tear over the crimes, which caused such a cry of a poet, but also over the crime, which slit the throat of this beautiful seagull. " The poem is considered one of the most beautiful war poems ever made and one of the greatest poems of Croatian literature. SEE OUR WEB PAGE FOR LONGER DESCRIPTION.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Kirchstetten, 21. XII. 1944.

Bell X-1A rocket-powered Aircraft Signed by Chuck Yeager and Arthur W. Murray.

Printed illustration of the Bell X-1A rocket-powered aircraft. Signed in a contemporary hand by "Chuck Yeager Maj. USAF." Additionally Signed by "Arthur Murray Major USAF." Triple matted and framed. The entire piece measures 15 inches by 17.5 inches. A very nice piece of avionic history. The Bell X-1 was a rocket engine-powered aircraft, designated originally as the XS-1, and was a joint National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics-U.S. Army Air Forces-U.S. Air Force supersonic research project built by Bell Aircraft. Conceived during 1944 and designed and built in 1945, it achieved a speed of nearly 1,000 miles per hour (1,600 km/h; 870 kn) in 1948. A derivative of this same design, the Bell X-1A, having greater fuel capacity and hence longer rocket burning time, exceeded 1,600 miles per hour (2,600 km/h; 1,400 kn) in 1954.[1] The X-1, piloted by Chuck Yeager, was the first manned airplane to exceed the speed of sound in level flight and was the first of the X-planes, a series of American experimental rocket planes (and non-rocket planes) designated for testing of new technologies and often kept secret. Arthur W. Murray flew test flights on the Bell X-1 and the Bell X-5 aircraft.

        Fonarik.

Moscow, Leningrad: Gos-Izd Detskoi Literatury, 1944 - SCARCE First Edition. Illustrated by K. Kuznetsov. 68pp. 12.5 x 18cm. Original colour illustrated papercovered boards, cloth spine. Colour illustrations. Light even toning to paper stock, light indiscriminate felt pen markings, very minor shallow creasing, minor nudging. Even rubbing to boards, light even soiling, nudging to corners, foot & cap of spine, rubbing pronounced to board extremities. With restricted allocations for any industry not directly related to the military, resources for children’s books were an extremely low priority during the Second World War. That a children’s book would be published in full colour is quite incredible. Having died in ‘43, Kuznetsov had at least one other book published in colour that year which indicates to some degree the respect held for him in spite of accusations leveled at him throughout his career of not sticking to Soviet realism. Also notable for the illustrations depicting the military forces at war. Copies recorded in the US at Oclc: 619611617 at Indiana Bloomington, Los Angeles Public Library.         Guido Crepax per Oberdan Chiesa. 29.1.1944 - 29.1.1987. .

Le tavole tre e quattro sono rispettivamente relative all'attentato e all'esecuzione.

Kristus: 32 drevorytu k Novemu Zakonu [Christ: 32 Woodcuts of the New Testament]

Prague: Tiskem a nakladem Noviny, 1944. First trade edition. Hardcover. Fine. SIGNED. Octavo [24 cm] in boards over cloth spine, with title in woodcut on front board. Fading to spine; very light wear; interior is clean and bright. Signed by Bochorakova-Dittrichova on title page. Introduction by Czech woodcut artist Frantisek Kubista. Kristus is a wordless novel of the life of Christ, from the Annunciation to the Resurrection. Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova (1894-1980) was the first female wordless novelist and the only woman to work in this medium during its heyday. She was born in the Moravian region of what is now the Czech Republic and spent most of her life in Brno, the Moravian capital. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and in 1923 received a government scholarship to study printmaking in Paris. Bochorakova-Dittrichova's unpublished wordless novel Malí ka Na Cestách [The Artist on Her Journey] recounts this period in her life. In Paris, she first encountered the wordless novels of Flemish artist Frans Masereel, the originator of the form, and was inspired to create her own. Over the course of her long career, Bochorakova-Dittrichova published several wordless novels, along with travelogues and historical works. She also worked as a printmaker and illustrator, and was highly regarded in her native land, though largely unknown elsewhere. This changed in 2014, when the National Museum of Women in the Arts held an exhibition of her work entitled "The First Woman Graphic Novelist: Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova," and this important artist finally began to gain global recognition. Her work, however, is still not widely available.

Introduction by Czech woodcut artist Frantisek Kubista.Kristus is a wordless novel of the life of Christ, from the Annunciation to the Resurrection.Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova (1894-1980) was the first female wordless novelist and the only woman to work in this medium during its heyday.
