Von der Pike Auf, Zum 60. Geburtstag unseres Chefs herrn Adolf Müller zusammengestellt

Frontis. port & ca. 300 black & white photos on 104 glossy photo paper leaves. 160 unnumbered leaves of text, all printed on coated glossy paper. Large folio (412 x 301 mm.), orig. cloth. [Munich: H. Schwaiger, 1944]. A richly illustrated festschrift, privately printed in two copies only, for Adolf Müller (1884-1945), the publisher of Mein Kampf and close confidante of Hitler from the earliest days of the Nazi party, issued to celebrate the publisher's 60th birthday on 4th May 1944. Two copies were prepared and this, the only one bound, was Müller's personal copy presented to him from the firm (the other copy, the house "file" copy, remained unbound and cannot be located). With its more than 300 photographs, this work provides not only a rich first-hand history of the Nazi party's control of media in the pre-World War II period, but also reveals information about Müller's publishing empire and his relationship with Hitler. Müller was an intimate friend of Hitler - it was Müller who picked him up from Landsberg prison (documented within) in 1924 and Hitler lived in the publisher's house in Tegernsee. Müller published Mein Kampf in 1925 and all its subsequent editions. The chief publisher of the Nazi party, he directed the printing of the newspaper "Völkischer Beobachter," a vital arm of the Nazi propaganda effort. Müller parlayed his firm's importance to the Nazi cause from its earliest days into powerful administrative positions and a close friendship with Hitler. Intimate scenes of Müller show him hunting and fishing, participating in Nazi rallies, working at his desk, conferring with prominent Nazi officials, etc. Among the many images of Müller's personal life, Hitler appears in twelve images, including one where he has just been released from Landsberg prison following the Beer Hall Putsch and stands next to Müller's car. In others, Hitler's close friendship with Müller is quite evident. After his discharge from the German army in 1915, Müller founded the printing company Münchner Buchgewerbhaus M. Müller & Sohn, to publish newspapers and magazines. By the early 1920s he had formed friendships with members of the National Socialist German Workers' Party and, starting in 1925, Müller's firm was the party's central publishing house. Subsequently, the Nazi party entrusted to Müller the publication of Mein Kampf because of his friendship with Hitler. Once the Nazi party had taken over the German government, Müller's business, benefitting from a near monopoly, grew exponentially. He officially joined the party at Hitler's request in 1934. His firm printed more than two million copies weekly of various Nazi magazines and newspapers at the beginning of World War II. Müller's leadership was an irreplaceable component of the Nazi party's propaganda apparatus in the 1920s and through to the end of the war. The present work captures the role of printed media in the rise of the Nazi party. It traces the humble beginnings of Müller's publishing firm in Munich to the establishment of offices in Hamburg, Berlin, Vienna, and Weilheim. The photographs show printing equipment, offices and factories, intimate shots of Müller's offices, and reproductions of significant publications. The text of this book provides a thorough account of Müller's career, which, at times, is surprisingly candid. Certain portions touch upon the company's claims that it was an impartial entity, even though it underwent a rapid change from a neutral publishing house into a company wholly involved in National Socialist propaganda. Additionally, it becomes clear that this document was not intended for widespread publication since it openly discusses the company's internal operations and political decisions in a very forthright and revealing manner. Another section describes the firm's entanglement in a controversy regarding the reporting of Germany's annexation of Austria. Finally, there are extensive histories of the publication of Mein Kampf and the "Völkischer Beobachter." According to the preface composed by Heinrich Schwaiger, chief manager of the Munich headquarters, two copies of the work were printed, however the present copy was the only one bound and the second, which remained in sheets, can no longer be located. Despite Nazi Germany's growing number of defeats by 1944 and the destruction of the company's headquarters in a bombing raid, no expense was spared in this book's production. An original Gothic font was cast especially for this book, and the company's plant prioritized the high-quality illustrations on fine coated photo paper. The famous caricaturist Olaf Gulbransson executed the frontispiece portrait of Müller. Müller hanged himself in prison on 23 May 1945 following his capture by American troops. In extremely fine and fresh condition.

"A 'secret' document proposing a solution for Europe's perpetual state of war and political violence, [this short essay] was originally circulated in mimeographed form with the title 'Per un'Europa libera e unita. Progetto d'un manifesto (For a Free and United Europe. A Draft Manifesto). It was a political statement drawn up, between winter 1941 and spring 1942, by Altiero Spinelli (1907-1986) and Ernesto Rossi (1897-1967). The Manifesto called for a break with Europe's past to form a new political system through a restructuring of politics and extensive social reform. It was presented not as an ideal, but as the best option for Europe's post-war condition" (Books that Made Europe, p. 340). OCLC locates 14 copies worldwide; Copac adds no further copies. One of the signers here is Sergeant Carl E. W. Bell, the "Millionth Man" to visit the Canteen, as shown in the attached photo.         [The Darkening Ecliptic, in] Angry Penguins,

Melbourne & Adelaide: Reed & Harris,, [June] 1944. 1944 Autumn Number to Commemorate the Australian Poet. Small quarto sized magazine, original wrappers with text in black to front and back and colour Nolan illustration to front wrapper. Ownership inscription to front wrapper. Small chip from the wrappers at ends of spine, a few minor marks to wrappers, but otherwise a remarkably bright and well preserved copy, excellent condition. First edition, in the very scarce original Angry Penguins issue, of the poems that constituted one of the great literary hoaxes of the century. Ern Malley's Darkening Ecliptic made its first appearance in this special commemorative Autumn 1944 number (actually June) of Angry Penguins, Australia's leading modernist literary magazine, who had had the poems submitted to their offices with a cover letter by an Ethel Malley, claiming to have found them in the effects of her recently deceased brother, Ern Malley. Angry Penguins took the bait beautifully, and published the poems with a portentous introduction by editor Maxwell Henry Hastings, opening: "Ern Malley prepared for his death quietly confident that he was a great poet, and that he would be known as such." In fact, there was no Ethel nor any Ern, but two poets, James McAuley (1917-76) and Harold Stewart (1916-95), who wished to pull the leg of a literary establishment they saw as pretentious and misled. The hoax was quickly exposed in the Sydney Sunday Sun, and McAuley & Stewart made a tart statement exposing themselves as the authors and justifying the fraud: "What we wished to find out was can those who write and those who so lavishly praise this kind of writing, tell the real product from consciously and deliberately concocted nonsense." In this McAuley & Stewart's hoax appeared to have been an unqualified success, and by 1946 Angry Penguins had folded, utterly discredited. The Oxford Companion to Australian Literature observes that "the vigorous and legitimate movement for modernism in Australian writing.... received a severe setback, and the conservative element was undoubtedly strengthened." The longer term effect of the Darkening Ecliptic, however, has been more subtle and ironic. In time poets such as John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch and Robert Hughes began to celebrate the poems as a successful example of surrealist poetry. Hughes claimed that Malley's "creation proved the validity of surrealist procedures: that in letting down their guard, opening themselves to free association and chance, McAuley and Stewart had reached inspiration by the side-door of parody". Certainly Malley's poems are still today far more widely read than those of his creators. Moreover, much genuine art and poetry was generated in response, knowing or otherwise, to Malley's potent gibberish, in particular artist Sidney Nolan's iconic Ned Kelly series (1946-7). Nolan later claimed that the Darkening Ecliptic "made me take the risk of putting against the Australian bush an utterly strange object". Original copies of this Darkening Ecliptic issue of Angry Penguins are very scarce. The rarity is in part due to the impounding of many copies by the police as the result of the obscenity trial which Harris, in addition to the crucifixion of his literary credibility, was forced to endure.

        Midshipman's Journal

Midshipman's Journal; small folio; original quarter cloth binding. 186 manuscript pages, three drawings, six hand drawn and two large folding maps and nine documents pasted in. The Journal of Midshipman J G Pike a Commando in the Royal Naval Reserve. The Journal chronicles the little recorded or noted tale of the Royal Navy's role in the final defeat of Japan in the Pacific between March 1944 and August 1945. Covering Pike's service on HMS Newcastle from March to April 1944 and on HMS Gambia from April 1944 until the end of the War. HMNZS Gambia served with the British Pacific Fleet, and participated in attacks on Japanese positions throughout the Pacific and supported a series of carrier raids against oil installations and airfields. She saw action off Okinawa, Formosa and Japan and took part in the bombardment of the Japanese city of Kamaishi on 9 August. She was under attack by Japanese aircraft at the time that a ceasefire was announced, and possibly fired the last shots of World War II. She was present on 2 September 1945 in Tokyo Bay for the signing of Japanese Instrument of Surrender. Rich in detail, this is a superb account of service in Royal Navy in closing months of the War. February 9th 1945."Today Lord Louis Mountbatten came on board........The hands were fallen in on the quarterdeck and after the Supreme Commander had been introduced to the heads of departments he went to the microphone to give a speech. He made a very impressive speech..." May 5th 1945. "The attack on the carriers were carried out by Jap suicide bombers, in two waves of three. These planes followed our air strike back and came in absolutely undetected, all these planes were in flames before they hit their targets. One crashed on Formidable and another crashed but slid off. One near miss was obtained by Indomitable and another on Victorious. The rest were shot down." 9th May 1945. "At about dusk one of the destroyers had sighted an object on the horizon. The object seems to be a huge splash in the water with smoke above it. It was later reported that the object was presumably a rocket plane." 16th July 1945. "At 0500 today the American 3rd Fleet was sighted. It was divided into 3 groups. Each group consisting of 3 battleships, 5 carriers, 6 cruisers and destroyers. All told there were 102 American ships. The British Fleet totalled 24 ships." 11th August 1945. "2 Atomic Bombs had been dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This new terrible weapon destroyed a whole city in one blast. No details have been released to give us any true picture of the actual damage. The rumours circulatingare varied and many. Now we are hoping for the Japanese to surrender. The fleet was due to return to Sydney on the 9th, but owing to the sudden developments we were remaining in the area." "Later in the day a general signal read that the main body of carriers would return to Sydney leaving the King George V, Indeatigable, Gambia and Newfoundland with the American Fleet in case ships were needed to enter Japanese ports. " 13th August 1945. At 0830 today Admiral Halsey signalled "Line up for the last round". 15th August 1945. "Early this morning rumours were rife that the Japanese had "packed up". However, no official signal from Macarthur was received and a strike of 700 planes was flown off at dawn from all task force groups to attack Tokyo. At 0800 the strike returned with reports of heavy opposition from both flak and fighters over Tokyo. Ten aircraft from British carriers and 16 Americans were shot down." "At 1129 a message was received from CTF which read 'CEASE HOSTILITIES AGAINST JAPAN'. At that same moment a Judy appeared dead astern flying straight at us firing her machine guns. There were a large crowd of men standing on the quarterdeck and soon as the plane was spotted, everyone immediately ran for their respective stations. No alarm was given. However two Seafires were close on its tail and the plane was blown to pieces over our foremast. It all happened in about one minute and after the shock we found that five men had been killed by machine gun bullets and 11 wounded. Among the dead was my very close friend Midshipman Joe O'Keefe R.N.R. The only officer on the Gambia that was killed in action. It seems impossible that the war is over after six long horrible years." Pike as a Royal Marine Commando transferred to an American Landing Ship and was one of the first Allied soldiers to set foot on mainland Japan. 27th August 1945. "It was fitting that the fleet anchored as the sun set behind Fujiyama which symbolised the last sunset of the once powerful Japanese Empire beaten to her knees in defeat now." Pike led a small detachment of Commandos to secure one of two forts guarding Sagami Bay. 29th August 1945. "We landed on a small jetty on Fort No 1. A party of Japanese Officers were drawn up and I was approached by a Japanese Naval Lieutenant. He spoke English and his first words were 'welcome to our American friends' at which I informed him curtly that we were British which seem to disconcert him somewhat." The diary concludes with an entry regarding the collection of British POW's. 30th August 1945. "Our duties at Yokosuka were the occupation of the dockyard area, to make an inventory of all supplies... a large body of Japanese troops in the area and be at 'stand to' in case of attempted suicide attacks by disgruntled Japanese. Today I accompanied Lt. Comm. Davis-Goff by car to Ofuna a few miles to the North West of Yokosuka to a prisoner-of-war camp where air force prisoners were imprisoned. On our arrival we were greeted by a large throng of prisoners some in a severe state of emaciation and others looking surprisingly cheerful and healthy. I was later informed that the healthy ones were the "new boys" shot down recent to the war's end." These are the last words of the diary. Pike was recommended to be Mentioned in Despatches for his leadership of the landing party. All midshipman journals in the Royal navy were marked weekly by the ship's captain and the Captain of the Gambia had a lot to say about Pikes's efforts. He is given short shrift when he questions why the Royal Navy was in the Pacific and as a consequence has to write an essay on the Future and Importance of the British Empire! These are the last words of the diary. Also included are his medal group consisting of 1939-45 and Burma star with Pacific clasp, war medal with oak leaves, Africa Service medal, New Zealand medal and Colonial Special Constabulary medal.

Studies on the chemical nature of the substance including transformation of pneumococcal types. Induction of transformation by an deoxyribonucleic acvid fraction isolated from pneumococcus type III (137-158).

      J. exp. Med., 79. New York, The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, 1944, 8, V, 679 pp., 65 Fig., 16 Taf., Leinenband der Zeit St.a.Tit. FIRST DESCRIPTION of DNA Oswald Theodore Avery (1877-1955) was a Canadian-born American physician and medical researcher. The major part of his career was spent at the Rockefeller Institute Hospital in New York City. Avery was one of the first molecular biologists and was a pioneer in immunochemistry, but he is best known for his discovery in 1944 with his co-workers Colin MacLeod (1909-1972) and Maclyn McCarty (1911-2005) that eoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is the basic material respnsibple for geneticv transformations. ASA BEGINNER in science, Colin Munro MacLeod was granted the most wonderful of gifts, a key role in a major discovery that greatly changed the course of biology. Great as this gift was, it came not as unalloyed treasure. On the contrary, for reasons that are not wholly clear even today, the demonstration by Avery, MacLeod, and McCarty that deoxyribonucleic acid is the stuff that genes are made of was slow to receive general acceptance and has never really been saluted in appropriately formal fashion. The event was originally recorded in the now famous paper of 1944 in the Journal of Experimental Medicine,' entitled: "Studies on the Chemical Nature of the Substance Inducing Transformation of Pneumococcal Types. Induction of Transformation by a Desoxyribonucleic Acid Fraction Isolated from Pneumococcus Type III." The title tells the story clearly this was an historic watershed. Sir MacFarland Burnett states that "the discovery that DNA could transfer genetic information from one pneumococcus to another heralded the opening of the field of molecular biology." Writing in Nature in the month before MacLeod died, H. V. Wyatt reports it as "generally accepted" that the field of molecular biology began with the appearance of this paper. Lederberg terms the work "the most seminal discovery of twentieth-century biology." Walsh MCDermott, COLIN MUNRO MACLEOD January 28, 1909-February 11, 1972Garrison & Morton No. 255.3

Album of Nine Original Pen-and-Ink Cartoons Depicting Life at a Vichy France Prison Camp for Political Prisoners

Sisteron, France - Early 1940s. 8vo. 22 by 17 cm. Sisteron was used for political prisoners -- communists, anarchists, other undesirables -- as well as common criminals, during the German occupation. It would be liberated by American forces in August, 1944. The artist, whose signature we can not make out with certainty (Cascal, Gascal?), had a sure mastery of his art -- the lines are drawn with great precision, without the result coming off the least bit fussy. He easily conveys the absurdities of prison life, and the insanities of his masters, as well as his fellow prisoners, for whom the circumstances of their incarceration could drive to insanity. In these nine illustrations he somehow seems to capture the breadth and wackiness of his experience. Each of the illustrations is captioned in French, which we translate as "Arrival", "The clandestine fire", "The guard's review" (of the prisoners), "The forced carrying of wood", "The aftermath of squash and leek" (soup?); "Soup", "Distribution of parcels", "The game of boule", "Forced labor relating to squash". The illustrations are all signed, but we are not sure of the spelling. The notebook itself is a generic "Dessin" booklet. Light wear. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Magdeburg Anfang Oktober 1944.         Alpine Architektur - in 5 Teilen und 30 Zeichnungen.

Folkwang-Verlag, Hagen. 1919. i.e. Tokyo,, 1944. Reissue of the 1919 edition. Folio. Black cloth wrappers with Japanese lettering in silver. Japanese title-page and 37 card leaves comprising 29 mounted monochrome sheets and eight colour lithographs, all facsimile reproductions of the 1919 edition. The translation into Japanese is in a booklet at the rear. It is sometimes stated that this is in fact a reissue of the original Folkwang sheets which had somehow been transported to Japan, but it has been established that there is some variation in dimensions and therefore these are in fact lithographic reproductions of a very high quality. Utopian visions of fantasy crystalline constructions. In the mid-thirties Taut, in exile from Nazi Germany, spent a few years in Takasaki where he wrote extensively on Japanese architecture and culture. He compared the historical simplicity of Japanese architecture with the modernist style. Near fine in very good indeed dustwrapper (printed in Japanese) with a tear to the front flap. Scarce, especially in such brilliant condition.Offered with: the other four volumes of the Collected Works of Bruno Taut published simultaneously with the above but in a different format (octavo: very good set in card slipcases).         RAF WWII AIR NEWSPAPER: Zmaga. Zavezniska publikacija za Jugoslovane. Posebna izdaja [Victory. Allied Publication for Yugoslavians. Special Edition].

4o, 4 pp. with printed maps (Very Good, slightly age-tomed, tiny tears in margins). - [South Italy (Bari?) or North Africa: 1944]. A very rare newspaper with maps, printed by the Allies in Slovenian language, and dropped with airplanes in Yugoslavia, during the WWII. - This very rare WWII newspaper shows three maps. On the cover map of Europe with liberated areas by the Allies in the past 15 months, in the middle a double-page map of the Russian front, including an in-set map comparing the sizes of liberated part of Russia with the size of Germany, and a map of the theatre of War of Pacific on the last page. This newspaper was printed by RAF and USAAF to inform people of Yugoslavia (in this case Slovenia) about the progression of the Allies in Europe and in the world, as they would be probably getting wrong information under German occupation during WWII. The paper was probably printed in Bari in Italy, in an army basis, and distributed by planes to Yugoslavia. On June 7, 1944, the Balkan Air Force was founded in Bari by the Allies, consisting of Yugoslavian Partisans, as well of soldiers of seven other nations. From that newly liberated army base they could fly across the Adriatic in hours to the occupied territory of Yugoslavia. In the numerous operations they have also distributed newspapers to the Partisan controlled areas. All newspapers distributed by planes during the WW II are very rare. We could not trace any other examples of this newspaper in institutions worldwide.
