Album of Nine Original Pen-and-Ink Cartoons Depicting Life at a Vichy France Prison Camp for Political Prisoners

Sisteron, France - Early 1940s. 8vo. 22 by 17 cm. Sisteron was used for political prisoners -- communists, anarchists, other undesirables -- as well as common criminals, during the German occupation. It would be liberated by American forces in August, 1944. The artist, whose signature we can not make out with certainty (Cascal, Gascal?), had a sure mastery of his art -- the lines are drawn with great precision, without the result coming off the least bit fussy. He easily conveys the absurdities of prison life, and the insanities of his masters, as well as his fellow prisoners, for whom the circumstances of their incarceration could drive to insanity. In these nine illustrations he somehow seems to capture the breadth and wackiness of his experience. Each of the illustrations is captioned in French, which we translate as "Arrival", "The clandestine fire", "The guard's review" (of the prisoners), "The forced carrying of wood", "The aftermath of squash and leek" (soup?); "Soup", "Distribution of parcels", "The game of boule", "Forced labor relating to squash". The illustrations are all signed, but we are not sure of the spelling. The notebook itself is a generic "Dessin" booklet. Light wear. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Folkwang-Verlag, Hagen. 1919. i.e. Tokyo,, 1944. Reissue of the 1919 edition. Folio. Black cloth wrappers with Japanese lettering in silver. Japanese title-page and 37 card leaves comprising 29 mounted monochrome sheets and eight colour lithographs, all facsimile reproductions of the 1919 edition. The translation into Japanese is in a booklet at the rear. It is sometimes stated that this is in fact a reissue of the original Folkwang sheets which had somehow been transported to Japan, but it has been established that there is some variation in dimensions and therefore these are in fact lithographic reproductions of a very high quality. Utopian visions of fantasy crystalline constructions. In the mid-thirties Taut, in exile from Nazi Germany, spent a few years in Takasaki where he wrote extensively on Japanese architecture and culture. He compared the historical simplicity of Japanese architecture with the modernist style. Near fine in very good indeed dustwrapper (printed in Japanese) with a tear to the front flap. Scarce, especially in such brilliant condition.Offered with: the other four volumes of the Collected Works of Bruno Taut published simultaneously with the above but in a different format (octavo: very good set in card slipcases). Illustrated; texts in Japanese.

RAF WWII AIR NEWSPAPER: Zmaga. Zavezniska publikacija za Jugoslovane. Posebna izdaja [Victory. Allied Publication for Yugoslavians. Special Edition].

4o, 4 pp. with printed maps (Very Good, slightly age-tomed, tiny tears in margins). - [South Italy (Bari?) or North Africa: 1944]. A very rare newspaper with maps, printed by the Allies in Slovenian language, and dropped with airplanes in Yugoslavia, during the WWII. - This very rare WWII newspaper shows three maps. On the cover map of Europe with liberated areas by the Allies in the past 15 months, in the middle a double-page map of the Russian front, including an in-set map comparing the sizes of liberated part of Russia with the size of Germany, and a map of the theatre of War of Pacific on the last page. This newspaper was printed by RAF and USAAF to inform people of Yugoslavia (in this case Slovenia) about the progression of the Allies in Europe and in the world, as they would be probably getting wrong information under German occupation during WWII. The paper was probably printed in Bari in Italy, in an army basis, and distributed by planes to Yugoslavia. On June 7, 1944, the Balkan Air Force was founded in Bari by the Allies, consisting of Yugoslavian Partisans, as well of soldiers of seven other nations. From that newly liberated army base they could fly across the Adriatic in hours to the occupied territory of Yugoslavia. In the numerous operations they have also distributed newspapers to the Partisan controlled areas. All newspapers distributed by planes during the WW II are very rare. We could not trace any other examples of this newspaper in institutions worldwide.

India 1944 - Loose photographs and ephemera housed in a wooden box measuring 11" x 9" x 5" with "India 1944" etched into the lid. A collection of 319 black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 2.5" x 1.75" and 4.5" x 4" with some captions on the verso, and with an additional 24 commercial cards measuring 3.5" x 2.75", one typed letter, and four English-language pamphlets from India published during World War II, as well as Japanese yen. All photographs are very good or better with curling at the edges and occasional spotting. An archive of photographs and papers from an American Airman ("Andrew") stationed as a labor supervisor in India in 1944 during World War II in the India Burma Theater. The photos are a combination of military personnel and barracks, with some stamped "Official Photo - USAAF [U.S. Army Air Forces]," as well as life in India during the war. One photo of a group of children has a caption that reads, "the big stomach on this kid is caused by starvation. They can be seen by the millions." One uncaptioned photo shows two Indian soldiers standing with a dead body between them covered in a Union Jack flag. Many of the pictures were sent home to his wife "Anna" in Connecticut with captions directed towards her such as, "This doesn't look like a stump of a tree but it is just that. I'm thinking of you in this picture." There are numerous pictures of Indian landmarks such as the Taj Mahal as well as photos of fisherman on the Ganges in Calcutta, hot springs, and one entitled an "action picture of softball game in organized softball league." The 24 commercially produced cards have images of India printed with captions as well as a stapled leaflet *A Pocket Guide to India* and *India Through the Camera's Eye*. Included among the total of 319 vernacular photos are 78 pictures of his young daughter and their friends back home that his wife sent to him to boost his morale and let him know the goings on on the home front. An interesting insight into Americans serving in India during the War.

RANGER MOSBY [WITH A LETTER AND ENVELOPE, EACH BEARING JOHN MOSBY'S SIGNATURE]

Chapel Hill, North Carolina: University of North Carolina Press, 1944. Second Printing. Hardcover. Very Good. Brown cloth, octavo. Text clean, cover is very good, very marginal nudging to corners. Stated second printing. 347 pages. Notes, appendix. Frontis plate of Mosby. 17 pages of illustrations, endpaper maps. A handwritten letter, signed by Mosby, dated Washington, December 1914, tipped-in to half-title recto. Also tipped-in, on verso of publisher's frontis portrait of Mosby, a photo plate of Mosby in uniform sitting in a wooden chair, and signed "Very Truly Yours, John Mosby. (Because the only other copy of this particular photo located bore a printed title of "Mosby in 1866", the signature is being treated as autopen. Since the photo is pasted, without printed title, to the extant page, this description will not treat it as authentic. The partial envelope which is addressed by Mosby, with return address in top left corner reading "From John Mosby, Washington", and addressed by him to Mrs. Wilma Lee Read...Morristown East Tenessee, postmarked Dec. 18, 1914. Washington D.C. is pasted down on the recto of the tile page. A bookplate on the copyright page states "From the Books of Wilma Lee Carter , whom we might assume was the daughter of Mrs. Read. The letter, in ink, begins with he salutation "My dear Cousin" and is in reference to a letter Mrs. Read sent Mosby inquiring about a common relative, to which he replies that he doesn't have any information and doesn't know about the relative she has inquired about, then then refers her to a certain book (VIRGINIA COUSINS by Goode) for possible answers, and then mentions that he has corresponded with a man in Missouri(?) named John Speed Mosby. The letter is eleven lines and signed "Very Truly, John Mosby" A commonly-found, but well researched account of "The Gray Ghost", with fabulous Mosby material tipped-in! John Singleton Mosby was a legendary battalion commander from Virginia who in contradistinction to a traditional military commander, seemed more guerilla/ninja than traditional soldier. He was renowned for his ability to effect daring, inconceivably dangerous strikes into Union-held camps with lightning speed, and then disappear. Mosby was acting under authority of General Robert E. Lee who in 1863 had granted him permission to set up the company (under the Partisan Ranger Act of 1862). By 1864, Mosby's Rangers (also Mosby's Men, or Mosby's Command) had expanded to around 400 men, consisting of six cavalry companies and one artillery company. Their ability to annoy and distract, and to repeatedly cause signficant expense to the Union side, who committed vast resources in an attempt to outwit Mosby's Men, made them a force to be reckoned with. On another occasion at the Union-held Fairfax County Courthouse, Mosby captured Brigadier General Edwin H. Stoughton. Having found Stoughton asleep in bed, he awakened the General with a slap to the rear, and asked 'Do you know Mosby, General?' The General replied 'Yes! Have you got the rascal?' 'No," said Mosby. "He's got you!'". (Wikipedia) One of their most celebrated raids was the derailing of a train and taking a $170,000 payroll from the paymasters of Sheridan's army. Each of the 80 raiders received $2100 share, though Mosby himself took nothing....(Munson, REMINISCENCES OF A MOSBY GUERRILLA) ...Mosby's correct estimate of men, his absolute freedom from jealousy and selfishness, his unerring judgment at critical moments, his devotion to his men, his eternal vigilance, his unobtrusive bravery and his exalted sense of personal honor, all combined to create in the mind and hearts of those who served him a sort of hero worship. Long before I ever set eyes on him I looked forward to the day when I would be able to take my hat off in his presence, and offer to follow him. As a Command we had no knowledge of the first principles of cavalry drill, and could not have formed in a straight line had there ever been any need for our doing so. We did not know the bugle-calls, and very rarely had roll-call. Our dress was not uniform in make or color; we did not address our officers, except Mosby, by their titles; in fact, we did not practice anything usually required of a soldier; and yet withal there was not another body of men in the army under better or more willing control of their leader. Two things were impressed upon us well, however; to obey orders, and to fight..." (Munson).

        Four Quartets

London: Faber and Faber,, 1944. Single square octavo sized 44pp. quire stapled at the spine. Original blue wrappers, titles to front wrapper in brown. Ink ownership inscription of "M. D. Connor" to half-title. Slight rusting at the staples, wrappers lightly creased and marked, light spotting within, vertical crease throughout from the book having been once folded, very good condition. An unusual and intriguing iteration of Eliot's Four Quartets. Certainly contemporary, and most likely unique, this curious printing takes the text and imprint of the first UK edition, published by Faber in 1944. Its exact status has outfoxed even Eliot's bibliographers, but the use of only capital letters has led to the suggestion that this may have been a private experiment produced through the use of telegraph or a military system of some kind. The four poems which make up Eliot's Quartets, "Burnt Norton", "East Coker", "The Dry Salvages" and "Little Gidding", were published separately between 1940 and 1941, and the first collected edition was published in the US in 1943. This Faber edition was the first UK edition of the Four Quartets under this title.

, 1944-1947. 1944-1947. Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 13". String-tied black leather. Contains 190 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.75" x 2.5" and 8" x 11", with captions and 20 pictorial postcards. Very good photo album with some mustiness, rubbing, and slight edgewear with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a sailor while serving on board the S.S. Mariposa and S.S. Aberdeen Victory during and after World War II between 1944 and 1947. The album begins with photos of the Mariposa docked in Newport News, Virginia in 1945 followed by a large photo of the S.S. Aberdeen Victory in Marseille in 1947 with a caption that reads, "went around the world in this ship." One page includes a collection of portrait photos of young women he met on his travels with their location captioned under the photo including the Philippines, Brazil, Panama, and England. The Mariposa is photographed thoroughly including the rigging, kitchen, sleeping quarters, and upper decks. One section is captioned "Life Aboard S.S. Mariposa (when not working)" and shows the men "getting the sun" and playing a game they created called "Fork-U." There are also photos from the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean featuring the North Atlantic in winter and the Rock of Gibraltar. The Pacific Ocean is also pictured with photos of a "goony bird following the ship" and an "island in the distance on the Pacific." The Aberdeen is also photographed in a section titled "Aberdeen Victory views 1947" which shows the church altar aboard the ship and "unloading by crane in Bombay." The men of the Aberdeen are also seen washing clothes and peeling potatoes. The crew enjoyed time off the ship as well, and photos of leave in the Panama Canal Zone are featured. They went to bars including the Florida club and flirted with local girls. When traveling past San Francisco the compiler photographed Alcatraz and the Army docks where the Navy ships were kept. The sailor also collected a number of pictorial postcards from his stop in Hawaii which feature Hawaiian tropical foliage, scenes of life on the island, and various landmarks. While in Hawaii he photographed Wakiki beach and downtown Honolulu with images of street scenes and buildings. Much of his time was spent island hopping in the Pacific to places such as Pago Pago in American Samoa, the Philippines, and Fiji where they spent a majority of their time in Suva. These photos show native houses, beaches, and the local people of the islands. One well-composed photo shows sailors walking up the docks with the Mariposa in the background; another shows their sister ship in the docks at Suva. While in Suva the compiler also photographed the local policemen in uniform, the botanical gardens, and the hotel. One photo shows an aerial view of people on a beach and is captioned "war brides and visitors on dock." Later in the album there are professional images of a volcanic eruption in New Guinea which took place in 1937. Another section of professional photos shows before and after shots of Manila depicting the effects of World War II. Photos from Brisbane, Australia show docks with the Mariposa's imposing hull in view as well as a seaplane flying over head. The city of Brisbane is also seen throughout with photos of shops and people of the area. They also stopped at Penang Island in the Malayan Straits which features photos of children, temples, and native workers. The final pages are from India and Ceylon with photos of dances, buildings, and a guide with a camel. An extensive collection of photographs detailing a sailor's time with the Navy at the end of World War II. .

Advertising Mock-up for Bourjois New York Cosmetics

1944 - A collection of mock-ups and one photographic proof for several Bourjois New York advertising campaigns with several based on photographs by legendary fashion photographer Erwin Blumenfeld. They measure 9.5" x 12.5" and 11" x 14" with three on artists boards and two on art paper. Each mock-up has tipped-on photos or drawings of perfume bottles and one with a photograph of a glamorous model. The lone proof consists of a photographic reproduction of a completed ad with a shot of Blumenfeld photographing a model with the finished shot featured below. All in remarkably fine condition with only one tipped-on element lacking.Blumenfeld was the highest paid photographer in the world and the cover artist for *American Vogue* during the 1940s and 1950s. His use of non-traditional coloring for this Bourjois advertising campaign was lauded in the October 1944 issue of *Popular Photography* which called his work a "symphony of color harmony." Two of the mock-ups here undoubtedly used his original photographs as the basis for their compositions, adding hand lettering and pasted on elements. A less avant-garde photograph, possibly also by Blumenfeld, is featured on a different mock-up and is artfully torn along the bottom edge. The final mock-up is an original drawing by an unknown artist that features a debonair gentlemen walking toward a beautiful seated women in a flowing dress with the same pasted on perfume bottles as the others ads. Also included are six proofs of Bourjois advertisements including one for a mock-up in this collection.A wonderful archive of 1940s advertising mock-ups based on work by a world premiere fashion photographer.

There are also photos from the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean featuring the North Atlantic in winter and the Rock of Gibraltar. The Aberdeen is also photographed in a section titled "Aberdeen Victory views 1947" which shows the church altar aboard the ship and "unloading by crane in Bombay." The men of the Aberdeen are also seen washing clothes and peeling potatoes. An extensive collection of photographs detailing a sailor's time with the Navy at the end of World War II. .

WW II UNDERGROUND PRINTING - POETRY & FINE ART: JAMA [THE PIT].

4°, 26 pp. with printed title and 25 lithographed text pages with illustrations within text, bound in parachute linen with lithographed title (Very Good, slightly age toned, tiny tears in margins). - [Topusko, Croatia: Naprjed] Izdanje kluba kulturnih radnika Hrvatske [Publishing House of Cultural Workers of Croatia] [End of November] 1944. In 1942 he joined the Partisans and participated in battles through the difficult terrain of Bosnia. In the months of seeing cruel battles and slaughtering of civilians, he wrote his most famous poem Jama (The Pit). This epic poem was inspired by a genocide made by the Croatian Nationalistic Army, Ustashe, upon the Serbian people. In first person, with cruel, yet beautiful verses, he describes torture, and eventual death as a part of mass killings. In 1943, only 30 year old Kova?i? was killed in Case Black – a joint attack by the Axis, which aimed to destroy the main Yugoslav Partisan force in Bosnia, mostly known by its final phase final phase, the Battle of the Sutjeska. After the battle of Sutjeska, Kova?i? was hiding in a farmhouse, weakened by a lung illness, listening the Serbian Nationalist Army Chetniks killing wounded Partisans. Eventually he was also tracked down by Chetniks, slaughtered and buried in an unmarked grave. Kova?i?’s death was accepted by the Partisans with great sadness. The journalist and politician Moša Pijade (1890-1957) described his death: "Goran Kova?i? did not survive the horrendous fifth offensive. This young Croatian poet, who in "The Pit" formed the strongest poem of a protest against the Ustasha massacres against the Serbs, was killed by "Serbian vigilante" Chetnik degenerates, these Swabian and Ustasha allies. They cut the throat, which had so sincerely and strongly thundered from the Croatian fraternal soul against Ustasha crimes against Serbian youth. Never before a more honest and humane work of a poet was punished and never a forehead of a murderer was tainted by more disgraceful crime. Reading the Goran's "Jama", hearts of generations and generations of Serbian youth will tear over the crimes, which caused such a cry of a poet, but also over the crime, which slit the throat of this beautiful seagull. " The poem is considered one of the most beautiful war poems ever made and one of the greatest poems of Croatian literature. SEE OUR WEB PAGE FOR LONGER DESCRIPTION.
