Author's first novel, signed by her on the dust jacket. Description: Book; Green boards with gold lettering to spine only, illustrated endpapers with map of London circa 1600's. Synopsis continues on back flap above author's bio. Condition: Book; Very good with several minor flaws, dirt along the leading edge of pages, loss of luster to the gold lettering, book is slightly shaken and the lower edge of the spine is worn along the edges, but still a bright and overall clean example of the author's first book. All pages are clean and the spine shows almost no sunning but several palm prints as this book was read and reread more than once. There is a stain on the top of the back of the ffep and bleeds through slightly to map but it also effects the first letter on the title page opposite and the bleed through of that page to the top of the copyright page on the reverse. Dust jacket; Good; Bright front panel with little sunning to the spine, back panel bright. Author's signature in blue ink under her name on the front flap. Jacket shows several lines, creases and chips and is very fragile with loss to the top of the spine that does not affect any design elements, pieces missing along the bottom edge that do affect the publisher's name and the leading edges of the flaps are starting in a few places but still holding together. Jacket w/signature was found folded inside the back board and is now protect in clear-to-both-side Brodart. Rare example of author's signature on the dj.

        Fable

Frederic Prokosch New York: (Frederic Prokosch). 1944. First. First edition. Marbled self-wrappers with pink printed label. 24mo. Fine. Out of a total edition of 44 copies, this appears to be one of the 22 copies on airmail paper for Europe; there were also 22 copies on Utopian Text paper for the U.S. Inscribed by the author: "For Emerald from Frederic with love." A brief poem, one of the author's rare "butterfly books," this one issued as a Christmas Greeting. Prokosch was an American novelist of remarkable promise who later fell under a cloud for manufacturing some spurious "rare first editions," which he did while experimenting with the handpress he used to manufacture the butterfly books. While he did reprint some of the butterfly books between 1978-1980, the provenance of this copy and the owner's notes that accompany it indicate that it was obtained in the 1950s. His reputation has suffered despite the fact that his books were both a critical and popular success at the time of publication. Rare. OCLC locates five copies (of the total edition) in institutions. .

Collection of Correspondence from Pin-Up Artist Alberto Vargas

1944-1973. A collection of 12 letters, cards, and publicity photos from Alberto Vargas and his wife, Anna Mae Clift, to a devoted collector, including an Autographed Note Signed ("Alberto") and three Christmas cards Signed with his stylized signature, fine. The letters and notes begin in 1961 and end shortly before the passing of Clift in 1973, a death from which Vargas never truly recovered. The letters are in response to complimentary notes sent by the collector to Vargas and include many references to his work. Each is composed with warmth and they include details about the couple's personal lives including Vargas's experience judging the Miss Universe contest and his lawsuits against Esquire magazine. (The magazine successfully laid claim to the term "Varga Girl" as well as the "Varga" signature, and the legal costs forced him to struggle financially for years until his 1960s "Vargas Girls" work for Playboy.) One of the Christmas cards includes a note from Vargas gifting the collector an unpublished original piece of artwork for being a "staunch defender and protector of 'my girls'"; a gift that sadly no longer accompanies the letter. The correspondence also includes five glossy publicity photos from World Wide Photo, dated between 1944-1949, showing Vargas with Clift, working at his drawing table, and with various models, along with the original prepared captions tipped on the verso. Several of the letters are written by Clift and one includes a comment about Vargas's devotion to his work: "He is truly a remarkable person. But without his work he would be lost." It's a particularly poignant thought from his wife, whose death left him devastated and ended his career. Further details available upon request. An interesting and thoughtful collection of correspondence and photos from one of the greatest pin-up artist of the 20th Century, and the wife who inspired his work. Further details available upon request. .

Newly nominated as FDRís running mate for Vice President, Harry Truman introduces to his old army reserve pal Col. John Snyder, ìmy good friend Jules Kohn,î a partner in the St. Louis law firm of Pendergast & Kohn.

Autograph Note Signed ìHarry S. Truman,î one page, 4î x 5.25î. ìUnited States Senate / Memorandum,î July 25, 1944. ToìCol. John W. Snyder / V.P. 1st Natl Bank [St. Louis], later his Secretary of the Treasury. Paper clip mark at top edge. Light creases at left edge. Fine condition. In full, ìJohn:- This is my good friend Jules Kohn. Wish you would talk with him. Harry S Truman.î Date ì7/25/44î in unidentified hand. Four days earlier, on July 21, 1944, at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Missouri Senator Harry S. Truman was nominated for Vice President; FDR had been renominated for a fourth term on July 20th. Truman returned to his home in Independence, Missouri, and, according to Associated Press reports, ìsaid he was ërestingí on the advice of ëmy old soldier pal, Dr. James Graham ÿ Donít worry about me. Iíll be in there pitching when the rest of ëem are downí ÿ Senator Truman said he was spending the evening [July 25, 1944] in bed, reading a stack of congratulatory letters and telegrams.î Jules Kohn was a partner in the St. Louis law firm of Pendergast & Kohn. Pendergast may have been related to the Kansas City and Jackson County political boss Tom Pendergast. With the help of Tom Pendergast, Truman had been elected Judge in 1922 and U.S. Senator in 1934. In 1946, Kohn represented Truman in Devault v. Truman, a case brought by Roy N. Devault, an attorney who alleged that Truman and Thomas B. Bash, while serving as Judges of the Jackson County Court in 1931, had illegally confinement him in a state hospital for the insane. The trial court had dismissed the case; in this 1946 appeal, the judgment was affirmed.

        ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR

Probably Big Sur CA.. no date. [Probably Big Sur, CA.]. no date.. Original watercolor on paper, 19.5 x 21cm, matted and framed under glass. Not examined out of mount, but visible portions fine. A characteristic watercolor, likely painted during the period of Miller's residence in Big Sur, when he actively solicited financial assistance in exchange for his paintings to enable him to survive and continue writing (ref: AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL AND SUNDRY, etc etc). The dominant colors are shades of blue and black. The painting depicts a male and a female figure, in a bathtub, exposed from mid-chest up. Not signed by Miller, but inscribed by his friend Emil White, who functioned during his Big Sur residence (1944-62) as his aide/secretary in correspondence with painting customers and the public: "This was painted but not signed by H.M. E. White."
