Vintage signed photograph of Rocky Graziano in the ring, standing next to his co-manager, actor George Raft

Vintage photograph signed “To Teddy- / A swell guy / Best Wishes / Rocky Graziano” and “Jack Healy mgr.” Sepia-tone, 10” x 8”. Some staining at edges, half-inch by inch portion torn away at mostly blank left margin, surface creases. Mounting remnants on verso.Very Good condition. From his May 23, 1990 obituary in “The New York Times”. In part, “Born Thomas Rocco Barbella … In 1939, a friend, Jack Healy, took him to New York’s famous Stillman's Gym to see if he could put his street fighting instincts to use in the ring. When a seasoned pro named Antonio Fernandez beat him up, he swore he would never box again. Two months later, however, he was back in the ring, this time fighting under the name of his sister’s boyfriend, Rocky Graziano. He won the Metropolitan Amateur Athletic Union welterweight championship. ‘The A.A.U. gave me a medal, which I hocked for $15,’ Mr. Graziano recalled years later. ‘Maybe this is not so bad a racket after all, I think. I will give this a shake.’” “The Washington Post” reported in April 7, 1944, in an article headlined “George Raft / Comanager / Of Graziano,” that “A rabid fistic follower, Raft recently bought into Graziano’s contract with Jack Healy, the youngster’s manager…” By April 1945, Irving Cohen had become Rocky’s manager, with Haley as co-manager.

        ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR, SIGNED AND DATED

Probably Big Sur Ca.. 1944. [Probably Big Sur, Ca.]. 1944.. Original watercolor on paper, 27.5 x 35cm, floated on mat, framed under glass, in shadow-box style. Fine. A vintage, highly characteristic watercolor from the period of Miller's residence in Big Sur, when he actively solicited financial assistance in exchange for his paintings to enable him to survive and continue writing (ref: AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL AND SUNDRY, etc etc). The dominant colors are orange, pink, green and white, with accents in red and black, within a black and green wash border. The painting depicts two human figures against a green field, within a white irregular "protective" oval on the left side, isolated against a larger orange and pink background, juxtaposed with a more hostile appearing form on the right within its own shell of jagged concentric ovals. Signed in full and dated in the lower right.

An American Dilemma. The Negro Problem and Modern Democracy. With the Assistance of Richard Sterner and Arnold Rose.

New York & London, Harper & Brothers Publishers, (1944). Royal 8vo. Orig. full green cloth w. gilt lettering to spine. A bit of bumping to capitals and corners, but a nice, clean and fresh copy in the original dust-jacket, which is usually lacking. D-j. w. a bit of wear to extremities, but overall unusually fine. Not price-clipped. LIX, (1), 1483 pp.. First edition of this epoch-making study of race-relations in America. The first edition appeared in both one volume and in two volumes. This is the one-volume edition. In the early 1940'ies the Swedish Nobel Prize winner for Economics (1974), Gunnar Myrdal (1898-1987) was funded by the Carnegie Foundation to map out the problems that African-Americans had to face in order to fully participate in the American society at the time. This resulted in an enormous and very detailed work, for which Myrdal is famous today. It immediately became very popular, and it sold more than 100.000 copies (25 printings of the first edition appeared) before the second edition appeared in 1965. Several other editions and extracts in other publications appeared before 1965. Nine issues of the work appeard within the first year. The work had an enormous direct effect on the general view on racial issues in America, and it must be said to have paved the way for what we now consider natural policies of racial integration and affirmative action. The view that underlies this landmark work is that democracy will triumph over racism. The effects of this work are difficult to underestimate, and it not only changed the view on racial issues in America, it also directly influenced the US Supreme Court in 1954 to outlaw racial segregation in public schools (Brown versus Board of Education). In 1950 Myrdal was a signatory of the UNESCO statement "The Race Question".Rare in the original dust-jacket.Assarsson-Rizzi and Bohrn: Gunnar Myrdal. A Bibliography, 1919-1981: No. 127a

Russian Ecclesiastical and Decorative Art Objects in the Collection of George R. Hann: Watercolor illustrations by A[ndrey] Avinoff

n.p 1944 n.p, 1944. 2 vols., Folio (13 x 11-1/2 in.). A total of 100 watercolors, each about 5 inches high by 3 inches wide; 84 of them mounted in two volumes, the remainder loose. Two full dark blue calf albums, gilt on upper covers and spines, patterned fabric doublures, linen hinges (to allow the thick volumes to open flat); fine condition. With the bookplate of George Rice Hann and that of the Library of the Westmoreland County Museum of Art in each volume . Mr. Hann's own record of his distinguished collection. The two large albums have typewritten title pages, and consist of original watercolors, inset behind transparent protective coverings on the rectos, with typewritten descriptions of a high order of scholarship on the facing versos, each volume illustrating 42 items: crosses, medallions, mitres, lamps, censers and other liturgical items, as well as silver, Imperial china table services, a silver spade used by Alexander II in laying the foundation of the Odessa City Park, and other relics of a non-ecclesiastical sort. Andrey Arvinoff (1884-1949), a Russian artist who emigrated to America after the Bolshevik revolution, specialized in landscapes and portraits; he also had a successful career in commercial art. He was noted for his imaginative and skillful detail, art critics praising his "purity of line that can come from only the most delicate perception" and observing "like the other Russians who have come here, he loves to use details in wholesome quantities". In the commercial art field, his nephew Alex Shoumatoff notes in the family chronicle Russian Blood, "his renditions of everyday household articles attracted attention as works of art." In 1922 he was recruited by the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh to be a curator of entomology and in 1926 became the museum's director. In addition, he taught courses on Oriental and Russian art at the University of Pittsburgh. He was the ideal artist to depict George Hann's Russian objects, and his watercolors, done over pencil, are careful but not fussy; where, as is often the case, the objects are set with precious stones, his drawings shine with a radiant sparkle. A SPLENDID, UNIQUE RECORD OF ART TREASURES WHICH IS ITSELF A WORK OF ART. Accompanying these volumes is the catalogue of an exhibition of Russian Icons and other works of art from Mr. Hann's collection held at Carnegie Institute in 1944. It is finely bound in dark brown calf, gilt device on upper cover; apart from a little wear to extremities, it is in fine condition, and displays some of the items illustrated in the two albums
