        The Wolves of North America

      The American Wildlife Institute Washington, DC 1944. First Edition Very good+ in 3/4 bison leather and olive green cloth covered boards with gilt text and decorations on the spine and with a gilt image of a wolf's head on the front board. The front and rear end sheets have applied to them one page biographies of the two authors. An octavo measuring 9" by 6". The leather at the head and heel of the spine is rubbed and worn as is the front joint. The front and rear hinges remain tight and strong. Without a dust jacket and probably as issued. A limited, presentation copy, one of only 102 copies so produced. The fly title page which is signed, inscribed and dated 1949 by the author to his good friend Dr. Bill Morgan (who was an author and linguist). In his long inscription the author notes that the binding for this particular volume is "buffalo hide" and he mentions the limitation which is not indicated elsewhere in the book. 636 pages including an index, a section of black and white photographs of skulls of North American Wolves, bibliography and text. Illustrated with maps and black and white photographs. An extremely unusual and uncommon copy. Our code number = TB24522

        Middle East Diary.

      London: William Heinemann Ltd, 1944 - Octavo. original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Spine rolled, corners bumped, just a few small spots to the edges of the text block. An excellent copy in the rubbed and spotted jacket with some nicks and short splits. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front blank, "For Maie & Dick with my love, Noël", with Maie Casey's ownership signature to the front free endpaper. The recipients were the Australian diplomat Baron Richard Casey and his wife Maie, who was known to be a confidant of numerous writers and artists, including Coward, Cecil Beaton, Patrick White, and Cynthia Nolan. Coward had met the couple in London prior to the Second World War, and in 1942 Richard Casey was appointed Minister Resident in the Middle East, being based in Cairo between 1942 and 1944. In late 1943 Coward toured North Africa, the Levant, and Iraq, visiting wounded soldiers in hospitals and performing a series of concerts as morale boosters. During this period he visited the Caseys in Cairo and made numerous mentions of them in this memoir of his tour. Together with a two-page carbon or mimeograph typescript of Coward's farewell speech delivered over the radio from Cairo on September 21, 1943 at the end of his Middle East tour.       N.p.: N.p., 1944. Archive of research material for James Hilton's novel, "The Story of Dr. Wassell," along with a ribbon copy typescript, carbon typescript, and mimeograph typescript (with infrequent holograph corrections) of the novel itself. A substantial archive of material relevant to Hilton's research on the subject that would culminate in his novel, published in the US in 1943, in the UK in 1944, and resulting in the 1944 film directed by Cecil B. DeMille and starring Gary Cooper and Ronald Colman. The archive includes a clean carbon typescript, 133 leaves, dated "7/31/42," of a near final form of the text (accompanied by several leaves relating to name changes, one with substantive holograph annotations by Hilton). The remainder of the material includes typed, carbon, and mimeographed transcripts of interviews Hilton (and others) conducted with those who knew Wassell, or soldiers who met him in the Pacific, newswire transcripts of articles about Wassell, and related topics. Finally, and significantly, the archive contains a typed transcript, as well as mimeographed transcript, of a series of interviews with Wassell undertaken by Hilton and Cecil B. DeMille at the DeMille ranch, June 16-19, 1942.

Large embellished three-color broadside of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's D-Day Prayer, issued by the President as a Christmas gift in 1944 for a few of his close friends at a White House ceremony. Handsomely printed in Gothic type. F.D.R. delivered this D-Day message as a radio address to the nation while the Allied troops were attempting to establish positions on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. It would be remembered as among the most moving Presidential addresses of all time: "Last night when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our Allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far. And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join me in prayer: Almighty God: our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a might endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity. Lead them straight and true: give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith. They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard.         1944 Two letters signed by artist James Montgomery Flagg, with an original caricature self-portrait of the Artist

      Two letters; one typed and signed and the other entirely hand-written; the first on James Montgomery Flagg 340 West 57th Street New York City letterhead and typed, signed in red crayon "Monty", a very amusing and irreverent letter, obviously to a close friend, dated "Indegardampendence Day 1944" (1944 artistically spaced beneath; the addressee 'Paul' from internal evidence was apparently an executive at CBS radio and for whom Flagg worked on occasion), stating in part: "Dear Paul - One of my most favorite characters of fiction and Lousey but Beloved Bastard of Modern Times; Snir; There is a despicable weakness in my otherwise robust ego that lets me write to you on my Model T Corona. I would think my Pride would stop me knowing as I do that you not only will ignore it but in all likelihood wont even read my letter: Maybe you cant read! So you went into advertising. What is this magnetism you use on me? It cant be entirely the hope that I can wangle jobs out of you; And yet what HAVE you got but money? You certainly are not pretty!...(a friend gave Flagg a book on Velasquez)...I pored over it and decided there wasn't such a chasm between Velasquez and me as you would hastily imagine. Except he couldn't illustrated Galsworthy-nor think up Nervy Nat while putting out a pair of clean shorts for Philip IV. You have noticed that Velasquez is NOT listed in Who's Who!..." and more, comparing his talent and lambasting that of Franz Hals, Howard Chandler Christy and Hamilton Fisher; evidently, Flagg was asking about painting a portrait and ends with "...For the love of Mary and Michael Joseph answer this for-free proposal! Don't be a mucous-minded small-town Equine-Brioche!"; the second letter, undated and seemingly from the same period of time and also addressed to "Paul", written in black ink on two sides of plain paper and referring to additional portrait work, Flagg is complaining about bothersome staff and getting paid for his efforts; He jibes Paul with "...Did you get a copy of Owen Wister's "Ancient Grudge"? I told you I'd like to read it on the air- I doubt if you heard me as you were sitting in a dark corner making fond caricatures of me at the time!..." Flagg goes on to speak of other sitters he has had or not been able convince for a portrait painting sitting, mentioning a Mrs. Berwith, Sgnr. Martinelli (most probably Giovanni Martinelli, Italian opera singer) at the Lotos Club and comparing refusals because of 'busyness" to the fact that FDR found the time to have his portrait done; with suitable funny ranting about calling Martinelli a "...shirt with a voice in it!..."; Flagg calls Mrs. Berwith "...she is nothing but a girdle with an angel in it..."; Flagg signs in ink "Monty" with the admonishment below, "Now pay attention to this letter!" and with a wonderful self-portrait caricature in pencil, colored in red crayon and with finger pointing at the sentiment above; letters are perhaps addressed to Paul Kesten, who was Vice President of the fledgling CBS Radio network at this time, during the WWII years; James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) American illustrator, cartoonist, perhaps most famously remembered for his fabulous poster art especially of the patriotic variety during the U.S. involvement in wars; typed letter one-sided; script letter is two sided; some edge, tips wear and old lines; some age-darkening; very good condition and wonderful content revealing the humor and personality of this famous American illustrative artist. . Very Good.

Le meilleur exemplaire possible de cet illustré classique, hormis l'unique sur Chine avec les les onze dessins originaux, une suite sur Japon et un bois barré.Le nôtre possède une belle lettre autographe de 1949 signée de l'artiste à un confrère, en trois pages à l'en-tête royale (et dorée) de "Tailles et Morsures" dont il fut co-fondateur et membre durant les dix ans que dura l'expérience, entre 1942 et 1952.Le blason précité, crée par Bischoff, présente un homme armé d'un glaive, pour la taille, et un lion de ses dents, pour la morsure. Printed just one month after the first printing. A nice copy, in good, in a good dust jacket. Sound binding. Pages are lightly age toned, and many show evidence of erased pencil from the margins, and there are two small check marks written in pen that remain in margins as well. Pages show light signs of handle. Exterior shows light rubbing and sunning, with three tiny areas of discoloration to the rear board. The dust jacket is fragile, showing chipping, loss, with a split forming along the fold at the rear flap. Rare early printing in original dust jacket.

      1944. 1944 - Huile sur toile, signée en bas à gauche, 45 x 26 (59 x 49 avec cadre). Une première mention dans le journal de l'artiste le 17 juillet 1944: "Décidé aujourd'hui de faire tout cet été des hommages à quantité de peintres, d'écrivains, etc. Tous petits c'est-à-dire du même format si possible, 35 x 27. J'ai déjà Verlaine."Cet élégant portrait en pied, un peu sombre peut-être mais bien senti, a manifestement été réalisé d'après une photographie de Otto. Il représente le poète à l'époque de sa candidature à l'Académie (1893), portant haut-de-forme et écharpe, cette dernière parce qu'il craignait les bronchites, appuyé sur une canne.Au verso du tableau une citation de Verlaine de la main de Lélo Fio (sic), qui figure à plusieurs reprises dans son journal: "Il faut voyez-vous nous pardonner les choses".

Both a polemic and detailed report, this piece presents moral arguments and statistics proposing the possibility of Jewish settlement in Madagascar. Written three years after the abandonment of the Nazi’s Madagascar resettlement plan. “This is not a rebellion against Zionism. The writer is a Zionist. Nor is it a rebellion against Palestine. The Jewish pioneers have convincingly demonstrated how truly Utopian Palestine can become in Jewish hands. It is a rebellion against a world situation which is not of our making and which cannot be unmade by us, which in the first instance presents us with a “Jewish problem” too enormous to be solved in a dozen Palestines, and then holds Palestine out to us as a solution to that problem, and finally snatches Palestine away from us when we reach out to take it. […] To the total war that is being waged against us on every front there can be but one answer: total Jewish victory. Let us by a single master stroke confound our enemies and rise from slavery and Ghetto and concentration camp to freedom and sovereign statehood and world power. We can do this and must and will do it in Madagascar.         Russian Ecclesiastical and Decorative Art Objects in the Collection of George R. Hann: Watercolor illustrations by A[ndrey] Avinoff

      n.p, 1944. 2 vols., Folio (13 x 11-1/2 in.). A total of 100 watercolors, each about 5 inches high by 3 inches wide; 84 of them mounted in two volumes, the remainder loose. Two full dark blue calf albums, gilt on upper covers and spines, patterned fabric doublures, linen hinges (to allow the thick volumes to open flat); fine condition. With the bookplate of George Rice Hann and that of the Library of the Westmoreland County Museum of Art in each volume . Mr. Hann's own record of his distinguished collection. The two large albums have typewritten title pages, and consist of original watercolors, inset behind transparent protective coverings on the rectos, with typewritten descriptions of a high order of scholarship on the facing versos, each volume illustrating 42 items: crosses, medallions, mitres, lamps, censers and other liturgical items, as well as silver, Imperial china table services, a silver spade used by Alexander II in laying the foundation of the Odessa City Park, and other relics of a non-ecclesiastical sort. Andrey Arvinoff (1884-1949), a Russian artist who emigrated to America after the Bolshevik revolution, specialized in landscapes and portraits; he also had a successful career in commercial art. He was noted for his imaginative and skillful detail, art critics praising his "purity of line that can come from only the most delicate perception" and observing "like the other Russians who have come here, he loves to use details in wholesome quantities." In the commercial art field, his nephew Alex Shoumatoff notes in the family chronicle Russian Blood, "his renditions of everyday household articles attracted attention as works of art." In 1922 he was recruited by the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh to be a curator of entomology and in 1926 became the museum's director. In addition, he taught courses on Oriental and Russian art at the University of Pittsburgh. He was the ideal artist to depict George Hann's Russian objects, and his watercolors, done over pencil, are careful but not fussy; where, as is often the case, the objects are set with precious stones, his drawings shine with a radiant sparkle. A SPLENDID, UNIQUE RECORD OF ART TREASURES WHICH IS ITSELF A WORK OF ART. Accompanying these volumes is the catalogue of an exhibition of Russian Icons and other works of art from Mr. Hann's collection held at Carnegie Institute in 1944. It is finely bound in dark brown calf, gilt device on upper cover; apart from a little wear to extremities, it is in fine condition, and displays some of the items illustrated in the two albums
