        United States Submarines

      New Haven, CT: H. F. Morse Associates, Inc., 1944. !944 Stated First Edition. Very Good. SIGNED BY ADMIRAL CHESTER W. NIMITZ, in his distinctive handwriting, on the front free endpaper: "9 Oct 1944 / C.W. Nimitz - Admiral USN." Two months later, on December 19, 1944, Nimitz was appointed Fleet Admiral. Chester W. Nimitz (1885-1966) was a five-star admiral who, during WWII, held the dual command of Commander in Chief, United States Pacific Fleet (CinCPac), for U.S. naval forces and Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas (CinCPOA), for U.S. and Allied air, land, and sea forces. He served as Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) from 1945 until 1947 and was the United States' last surviving Fleet Admiral. Barnes points out that in 1920 Nimitz established the naval base at Pearl Harbor as its first commanding officer; he assumed command of the Pacific Fleet shortly after the Japanese attack. Several photos of Nimitz presenting medals are included. Nimitz was the leading U.S. Navy authority on submarines, and this copy of Barnes' work was likely part of his library. The book was once in the Wellfleet (Cape Cod, Massachusetts) Public Library, and has a catalog number lettered in white on the spine, slight darkening at base of spine likely from a library label, and a circulation slip and card pocket affixed to rear endpapers. "Withdrawn" is also stamped on rear free endpaper. It is possible the book came to the Wellfleet library through the estate of Chester Nimitz, Jr., also a naval hero who resided near Cape Cod during his retirement. This is a comprehensive and well-constructed illustrated history of the submarine. It is a clean and firmly bound copy. Pages are clean and complete, top edge dust stained but otherwise very good. Hardcover of blue cloth with title gilt stamped on front and spine is clean, moderately edge rubbed with small bumps to corners. Spine gilt is rubbed and faded, front cover gilt is bright. Hinges and binding are firm and intact though the spine has a moderate lean. There is no dust jacket. It is the association with America's legendary naval commander that makes this a very special copy. 6 x 9-1/4"; [xii] + 195 pages. Photos available. Admiral Nimitz. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.

Original black sand-grained cloth with Eighth Army insignia and name to the upper board, cream textured endpapers. Just a little rubbed, overall very good. First edition, extremely uncommon. COPAC records just one copy, that presented to the Imperial War Museum by Montgomery himself, and two similar items also at the IWM, bound up from original copies of the messages, OCLC adds a copy at the Legermuseum, Delft. Monty's personal messages to the troops have been seen as a significant component in the creation of the legendary morale of the Eighth Army. As Freddie de Guingand says in his Foreword; "This collection … traces the journeys of this great fighting force over what was perhaps, up to the present time, the most eventful part of the war; from El Alamein to the capture of Ortona in Italy. These messages were always eagerly look forward to by the troops and fostered the spirit and the will-to-win that made the Eighth Army such a great and happy family.

Revised Final Script for the 1945 film musical, "Diamond Horseshoe" (here titled "Billy Rose's Diamond Horseshoe"), directed and written for the screen by George Seaton, based on the play, "The Barker," by John Kenyon Nicholson, and starring Betty Grable, Dick Haymes, and Phil Silvers. & & "Diamond Horseshoe" is a Technicolor musical that combines the storyline from the 1933 Clara Bow vehicle, "Hoop-la" (which is in turn based on the 1928 film and play, "The Barker") with the 1940s Las Vegas nightclub owned by Billy Rose. The film was a huge success in 1945, marking the film debut of the standard, "The More I See You," and was one of the first Hollywood films to satirize Freudian psychoanalysis. & & Orange studio wrappers, stamped REVISED FINAL on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped project No. 933 and copy No. 18, and dated July 14, 1944, with the holograph notation "Env. 1524" at the top right corner. Distribution page present, with receipt intact (and rubber-stamped No. 18). Title page present, with a date matching the front wrapper, with a screenwriter credit for Seaton. 101 leaves, mimeograph, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 7/18/44 and 11/6/44. A very good copy, the spine ev er so slightly darkened with a couple of very small stains at the heel, the dustwrapper a very good & bright example with a narrow 3/16ths bit of loss at the crown. An outstanding copy of Nabokov's extensive & very important early essay of his countryman, as this copy is inscribed by the master & embellished with one of his famous butterfly sketches to his dear friends of over 40 years, the Thompsons: "To Lisbeth and Bertrand with the author's love / Cambridge, Mass / Sept. 1944".  The book was published by New Directions, August 15th, 1944 making this a very early inscription. Genuine Nabokov presentations are uncommon especially those of a personal & generous nature. Large embellished three-color broadside of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's D-Day Prayer, issued by the President as a Christmas gift in 1944 for a few of his close friends at a White House ceremony. Handsomely printed in Gothic type. F.D.R. delivered this D-Day message as a radio address to the nation while the Allied troops were attempting to establish positions on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. It would be remembered as among the most moving Presidential addresses of all time: "Last night when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our Allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far. And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join me in prayer: Almighty God: our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a might endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity.       Ft. Richardson & Nome, 1944. Near Fine. Two Typed Letters. One page each, quarto, air mail stationery. Addressed " Pru Darling" (Whitfield). [Whitfield, the estranged wife of fellow Black Mask detective fiction writer Raoul Whitfield, and a possible lover of Hammett';s]. Fold lines, tiny ink mark to the pencil signed letter. Each letter with a small green ink number (65, 67 respectively) on the top left corner. Pencil signed letter with small ink mark to the side of the fifth paragraph, not affecting text. Overall near fine.& & [Hammett enlisted during WWII, and while serving with the Army Signal Corps in Alaska, he collaborated on The Battle of the Aleutians and edited the camp newspaper].& & Fort Richardson& 19 November 44& Pru darling:& Last night was far from being as restful a night as I had hoped. I'm housed in a Casual Company barracks just now, which means that most of my neighbors are strays and transients headed in one direction or the other and, with their chances of being shipped out at any time pretty good, take no risks on missing a probable last Saturday night in town. So they roamed in at all hours in all de-grees of noisy inebriation. Then, at a little after four this morning, eleven newcomers arrived, for whom eleven iron cots had to be set up in the middle of the floor, and who didn't get them-selves completely bedded down for another hour. I had to get up at eight and... Well, well, life in the Army isn't all a bed of roses, I sometimes think.& & i couldn't get away for the northland today, so I'm putting in an-other day slugging things out at the office, but, weather permitting, I hope to take off tomorrow morning; but it looks as if I won't be able to get as far as Nome this time. Maybe late next month... I'll probably go to Fairbanks, then back here, then to Mt. McKinley, then to Whittier via here, and then try for Nome again. As a matter of fact I'd rather see it in midwinter than this early, though I'd set my mind on doing some Christmas shopping on an island near there where native craftsmanship is said to be mighty fine.& & It begins to look as if I may slide out of Orientation into another line as soon as this tour is over. There's nothing definite about it yet as I don't know whether I want it--but that's not likely to make much difference.       Produced by the Photographic Section, First British Airborne Division, , 1944. Folio (380 × 300 mm) Original photographic card wraps, spiral bound. Photographic reproduction of Monrty's congratulatory message to Major-Gen. Urquhart, followed by similar map of the glider landing pattern for Operation "Market" with a "Secret" back stamp, and 34 photographically reproduced plates. Two press photographs - Horsa gliders coming into land, and evacuated airborne troops enjoying their first drink in Nijmegen - with printed captions verso. Wraps a little rubbed, particularly at the margins, plastic spiral binder damaged with leaves consequently coming loose, but overall very good. There can be few episodes more glorious than the epic of Arnhem, and those that follow after will find it hard to live up to the standards that you have set… in years to come it will be a great thing for a man to be able to say: 'I fought at Arnhem'" (From Montgomery's message of congratulation to Maj.-Gen.Urquhart, commander of the 1st Airborne. Evidently production of this unusual "souvenir" was overtaken by events, after initial successes Operation Market Garden stalled and at Arnhem the British 1st Airborne Division encountered far stronger resistance than had been anticipated. In the ensuing battle a small force managed to hold one end of the Arnhem road bridge, but after the ground forces failed to relieve them they were overrun on the 21st November. The rest of the division, trapped in a small pocket west of the bridge, had to be evacuated on the 25th. The Allies failed to cross the Rhine, which remained a barrier to their advance until the offensives at Remagen, Oppenheim, Rees and Wesel in March 1945. Images include mortars in action, house clearing operations, aerial views - "low oblique air photos … taken a week before [the] operation … flown in the face of heavy flak, they are some of the most remarkable operational photographs yet seen." - POWs, casualites, glider landings, graphic images of the corpses of General-Major Kussin and his staff, and even a page, "Recording History," of members of the photographic unit themselves. The three men in the unit were Sergeant Dennis M Smith, Sergeant Gordon Walker and Sergeant C Michael Lewis. This copy of Arnhem belonged to Oliver Frazer MBE who served in the Glider Pilot Regiment in the operations of D-Day, and at Arnhem. Extremely uncommon, we have not been able to trace another copy.

      Buenos Aires: Editorial Sur, 1944 Inscribed by Borges to his close friend, one of the important Argentine poets, Vicente Barbieri. First edition. 8vo., 203pp, frontispiece portrait by Marie Elisabeth Wrede. A very good copy in the original blue wrappers - small surface chip at the spine crown, contents darkened as always due to paper acidity. [Helft p.65; Becco 30]. The presentation inscription reads: "Para el colega Vicente Barbieri con sincera amistad. / Jorge Luis Borges - 1944", [For the colleague Vicente Barbieri with sincere friendship] 3000 copies of this edition were printed. El jardin de los cenderos que se bifurcan is the predecessor of this, one of the most important works of fiction of the 20th century. It is sufficient to quote Borges' own statement: "F icciones y El Aleph (1949 y 1952) son, según creo, mis libros más importantes". (Ficciones and El aleph are, I believe, my most important books). (Autobiografía p.111-112). The universe created by Borges' work is an alternative postulate of reality which, in many ways, influenced Foucault, Derrida, Paul de Man, Gerard Genette, Umberto Eco, John Updike, Goddard, Bertolucci, to mention a few from the European camp. We must also include the Barranquilla group and other Latin American writers, i.e ., Lezama Lima, Roa Bastos, Onetti, Cortázar, Sábato, and others. Contains 8 stories from the previously published El jardin + a group of 6 new stories entitled, including "Funes, the Memorious" & "Death and the Compass". Which was dedicated to Amanda Molina Vedia. Dust jacket; Illustrated green design by J.S. Vigne showing Amber as seen in a mirror. Design wraps to the spine with white lettering outlined in black along with a white Royal Coat of Arms, rear panel has Brockway Studios photo of author, inside front flap is signed by the author under her name on top, synopsis follows, not price clipped. Synopsis continues on back flap above author's bio. Condition: Book; Very good with several minor flaws, dirt along the leading edge of pages, loss of luster to the gold lettering, book is slightly shaken and the lower edge of the spine is worn along the edges, but still a bright and overall clean example of the author's first book. All pages are clean and the spine shows almost no sunning but several palm prints as this book was read and reread more than once. There is a stain on the top of the back of the ffep and bleeds through slightly to map but it also effects the first letter on the title page opposite and the bleed through of that page to the top of the copyright page on the reverse. Dust jacket; Good; Bright front panel with little sunning to the spine, back panel bright. Author's signature in blue ink under her name on the front flap. Jacket shows several lines, creases and chips and is very fragile with loss to the top of the spine that does not affect any design elements, pieces missing along the bottom edge that do affect the publisher's name and the leading edges of the flaps are starting in a few places but still holding together. Jacket w/signature was found folded inside the back board and is now protect in clear-to-both-side Brodart. Rare example of author's signature on the dj.

      Frederic Prokosch New York: (Frederic Prokosch). 1944. First. First edition. Marbled self-wrappers with pink printed label. 24mo. Fine. Out of a total edition of 44 copies, this appears to be one of the 22 copies on airmail paper for Europe; there were also 22 copies on Utopian Text paper for the U.S. Inscribed by the author: "For Emerald from Frederic with love." A brief poem, one of the author's rare "butterfly books," this one issued as a Christmas Greeting. Prokosch was an American novelist of remarkable promise who later fell under a cloud for manufacturing some spurious "rare first editions," which he did while experimenting with the handpress he used to manufacture the butterfly books. While he did reprint some of the butterfly books between 1978-1980, the provenance of this copy and the owner's notes that accompany it indicate that it was obtained in the 1950s. His reputation has suffered despite the fact that his books were both a critical and popular success at the time of publication. Rare.         Collection of Correspondence from Pin-Up Artist Alberto Vargas

      1944-1973. A collection of 12 letters, cards, and publicity photos from Alberto Vargas and his wife, Anna Mae Clift, to a devoted collector, including an Autographed Note Signed ("Alberto") and three Christmas cards Signed with his stylized signature, fine. The letters and notes begin in 1961 and end shortly before the passing of Clift in 1973, a death from which Vargas never truly recovered. The letters are in response to complimentary notes sent by the collector to Vargas and include many references to his work. Each is composed with warmth and they include details about the couple's personal lives including Vargas's experience judging the Miss Universe contest and his lawsuits against Esquire magazine. (The magazine successfully laid claim to the term "Varga Girl" as well as the "Varga" signature, and the legal costs forced him to struggle financially for years until his 1960s "Vargas Girls" work for Playboy.) One of the Christmas cards includes a note from Vargas gifting the collector an unpublished original piece of artwork for being a "staunch defender and protector of 'my girls'"; a gift that sadly no longer accompanies the letter. The correspondence also includes five glossy publicity photos from World Wide Photo, dated between 1944-1949, showing Vargas with Clift, working at his drawing table, and with various models, along with the original prepared captions tipped on the verso. Several of the letters are written by Clift and one includes a comment about Vargas's devotion to his work: "He is truly a remarkable person. But without his work he would be lost." It's a particularly poignant thought from his wife, whose death left him devastated and ended his career. Further details available upon request. Single sheet of stout card measuring approx. 4.5 x 7.5 inches (12.0 x 19.0 cms), obverse with gilt edges printed with the insignia of 'Admiral Inspector of the Fleet' in gilt and black and seasonal text in black; reverse blank.The seasonal text, SIGNED BY DONITZ IN BLUE INK , reads 'Grossadmiral Donitz dankt fur die guten Wunsche zum Weihachtsfest und zum neuen jahr und erwidert sie herzlich'.Grossadmiral Karl Donitz (1871-1980), German naval leader and Hitler's successor, commanded the Kriegsmarine during the latter half of WWII and is remembered particularly for his promotion of the U-boat offensive. He also served as Reichspraesident following Hitler's suicide in April 1945. Having authorised the German surrender he became a prisoner-of-war of the British and was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment for war crimes (primarily for ordering unrestricted submarine warfare). Following his release from Spandau in October 1956, Donitz's reputation underwent a degree of rehabilitation and he took considerable pains to answer correspondence and to provide autographs when required (including a facsimile for historians and collectors of the Articles of Surrender which he co-signed with Montgomery).HOWEVER, DOCUMENTS SIGNED BY DONITZ DURING THE WAR YEARS ARE SCARCE.
