An outstanding copy of Nabokov's extensive & very important early essay of his countryman, as this copy is inscribed by the master & embellished with one of his famous butterfly sketches to his dear friends of over 40 years, the Thompsons: "To Lisbeth and Bertrand with the author's love / Cambridge, Mass / Sept. 1944".  The book was published by New Directions, August 15th, 1944 making this a very early inscription. Genuine Nabokov presentations are uncommon especially those of a personal & generous nature.       1944. Pencil and watercolor on drafting paper. Lower right corner of page has been skilfully replaced. Does not affect images. 15 1/4 x 21 inches. Framed. Handsome proposed design for a post war Cadillac The license plate reads "GM 1944" raising interesting questions, since, as everyone knows, virtually no new cars were produced during the high armament production years of World War II, and certainly not pretty new dark pink ones. The car portrayed here does however anticipate very much the look of early fifties' vehicles, if not necessarily Cadillacs. And bright colors certainly would catch on in a way they had not before the war. Note the 1930's Cadillac emblem on the front grille, which was changed when auto production actually re-commenced.

Large embellished three-color broadside of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's D-Day Prayer, issued by the President as a Christmas gift in 1944 for a few of his close friends at a White House ceremony. Handsomely printed in Gothic type. F.D.R. delivered this D-Day message as a radio address to the nation while the Allied troops were attempting to establish positions on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. It would be remembered as among the most moving Presidential addresses of all time: "Last night when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our Allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far. And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join me in prayer: Almighty God: our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a might endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity. Lead them straight and true: give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith. They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. Label remnants on front flyleaf; minor watermarks to lower rear board and lower corner of rear pages; a very good in a very good dust jacket with modest edge wear. First edition, first printing, of this groundbreaking text which created the interdisciplinary research field of game theory. Von Neumann revolutionized mathematical economics, presenting for the first time his model which showed how one could maximize payoff in any given game. "Quantitative mathematical models for games such as poker or bridge at one time appearedimpossible, since games like these involve free choices by the players at each move, and each move reacts to the moves of other players. However, in the 1920s John von Neumann single-handedly invented game theory, introducing the general mathematical concept of "strategy" in a paper on games of chance (Mathematische Annalen 100 [1928] 295-320). This contained the proof of his "minimax" theorem that says "a strategy exists that guarantees, for each player, a maximum payoff assuming that the adversary acts so asto minimize that payoff." The "minimax" principle, a key component of the game-playing computer programs developed in the 1950s and 1960s by Arthur Samuel, Allen Newell, Herbert Simon, and others was more fully articulated and explored in The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior, co-authored by von Neumann and Morgenstern.Game Theory, which draws upon mathematical logic, set theory and functional analysis, attempts to describe in mathematical terms the decision-making strategies used in games and other competitive situations. A very good copy in the original blue wrappers - small surface chip at the spine crown, contents darkened as always due to paper acidity. [Helft p.65; Becco 30]. The presentation inscription reads: "Para el colega Vicente Barbieri con sincera amistad. / Jorge Luis Borges - 1944", [For the colleague Vicente Barbieri with sincere friendship] 3000 copies of this edition were printed. El jardin de los cenderos que se bifurcan is the predecessor of this, one of the most important works of fiction of the 20th century. It is sufficient to quote Borges' own statement: "F icciones y El Aleph (1949 y 1952) son, según creo, mis libros más importantes". (Ficciones and El aleph are, I believe, my most important books). (Autobiografía p.111-112). One short closed tear, a touch of use at the corners, otherwise truly spectacular. Forester's only mystery. The best copy we've seen in 20 years & perhaps the nicest copy available anywhere as this title usually turns up in poor shape because publisher Saunders' wartime production made use of rather cheap materials that had very little staying power.. 1st Edition.

DeMille and starring Gary Cooper and Ronald Colman.& & The archive includes a clean carbon typescript, 133 leaves, dated "7/31/42," of a near final form of the text (accompanied by several leaves relating to name changes, one with substantive holograph annotations by Hilton). The remainder of the material includes typed, carbon, and mimeographed transcripts of interviews Hilton (and others) conducted with those who knew Wassell, or soldiers who met him in the Pacific, newswire transcripts of articles about Wassell, and related topics. & & Finally, and significantly, the archive contains a typed transcript, as well as mimeographed transcript, of a series of interviews with Wassell undertaken by Hilton and Cecil B. Mimeographed typescript, printed on rectos only. Bradbound in pale blue studio upper wrapper, with studio label and rubberstamps, and darker blue, probably later lower wrapper. Upper wrapper faintly sunned, with a couple of minor smudges, title neatly lettered on spine, internally about fine. A "Temporary Complete Composite Script," including revised and unrevised leaves dated over the five day span, a character list, and two variant forms of the film's Foreword/Dedication. The script was adapted by Wead from William L. White's book, and the film, starring Robert Montgomery, John Wayne, Donna Reed, Ward Bond, et al, was directed by John Ford. Regarded by many as one of Ford's chief triumphs, THEY WERE EXPENDABLE was released 20 December 1945, just a little over four months after V.J. Day. The narrative is based on the exploits of John D. Bulkeley, a motor torpedo boat squadron commander and Medal of Honor recipient, and Robert Kelly, a skipper, during the World War II Japanese invasion of the Philippines in 1941–1942, and the film is acknowledged as one of the most realistic among the many contributions by Hollywood to the war and immediate post- war effort. The admonition on the upper wrapper to "Save Film! Help Win the War!, " as well as the prefatory note about the economic rationale for the composite nature of the script, underscore the circumstances of war-time film production. The film had something of a bumpy development, with Ben Hecht doing some uncredited script doctoring, and several uncredited directors, including Josef von Sternberg, stepping in to help out. Many changes were required to accommodate the various protectors of public morality, and an analysis of the evolution of the film through the succession of these widely disparate scripts (from Busch's treatment and collaborative script through the mammoth 200 pager attributed to Selznick) would likely be informative. Though Busch was himself a productive screenwriter for three decades, with a dozen credited screenplays and uncredited work on others, his final screen credit for this film consisted solely of "Suggested by a Novel by ...." One might assume the earliest draft here, co-written by him, might be closer to the novel than the end product.

In March 1946, he was assigned to Wiesbaden, Germany, where as the U.S. Air Corp’s only Jewish Chaplain in the area, he worked with Displaced Persons, helping to rehabilitate and counsel the Jewish survivors of the Holocaust. He also served as an aide to Judge Louis Levinthal, the advisor on Jewish affairs to General Lucius Clay in Postwar Germany. While serving as a chaplain, he arranged for and supervised the rebuilding of the Wiesbaden synagogue by the United States Military Government, and officiated at its dedication. My father bought this Seder Plate while in Germany (in 1946 or 1947), and brought it with him when he returned to the United States in 1947.& & In 1948, my father moved to _____________ to become the Western Area Director of the Jewish Welfare Board’s Commission on Jewish Chaplaincy, a position he held until his retirement in 1975.       [Probably Big Sur, CA.]. no date.. Original watercolor on paper, 19.5 x 21cm, matted and framed under glass. Not examined out of mount, but visible portions fine. A characteristic watercolor, likely painted during the period of Miller's residence in Big Sur, when he actively solicited financial assistance in exchange for his paintings to enable him to survive and continue writing (ref: AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL AND SUNDRY, etc etc). The dominant colors are shades of blue and black. The painting depicts a male and a female figure, in a bathtub, exposed from mid-chest up. Not signed by Miller, but inscribed by his friend Emil White, who functioned during his Big Sur residence (1944-62) as his aide/secretary in correspondence with painting customers and the public: "This was painted but not signed by H.M. E. White."

Some staining at edges, half-inch by inch portion torn away at mostly blank left margin, surface creases. Mounting remnants on verso.Very Good condition. From his May 23, 1990 obituary in “The New York Times”. In part, “Born Thomas Rocco Barbella … In 1939, a friend, Jack Healy, took him to New York’s famous Stillman's Gym to see if he could put his street fighting instincts to use in the ring. When a seasoned pro named Antonio Fernandez beat him up, he swore he would never box again. Two months later, however, he was back in the ring, this time fighting under the name of his sister’s boyfriend, Rocky Graziano. He won the Metropolitan Amateur Athletic Union welterweight championship. ‘The A.A.U. gave me a medal, which I hocked for $15,’ Mr. Graziano recalled years later. ‘Maybe this is not so bad a racket after all, I think. I will give this a shake.’” “The Washington Post” reported in April 7, 1944, in an article headlined “George Raft / Comanager / Of Graziano,” that “A rabid fistic follower, Raft recently bought into Graziano’s contract with Jack Healy, the youngster’s manager…” By April 1945, Irving Cohen had become Rocky’s manager, with Haley as co-manager.

Not price-clipped. LIX, (1), 1483 pp.. First edition of this epoch-making study of race-relations in America. The first edition appeared in both one volume and in two volumes. This is the one-volume edition. In the early 1940'ies the Swedish Nobel Prize winner for Economics (1974), Gunnar Myrdal (1898-1987) was funded by the Carnegie Foundation to map out the problems that African-Americans had to face in order to fully participate in the American society at the time. This resulted in an enormous and very detailed work, for which Myrdal is famous today. It immediately became very popular, and it sold more than 100.000 copies (25 printings of the first edition appeared) before the second edition appeared in 1965. Several other editions and extracts in other publications appeared before 1965. Nine issues of the work appeard within the first year.The work had an enormous direct effect on the general view on racial issues in America, and it must be said to have paved the way for what we now consider natural policies of racial integration and affirmative action. The view that underlies this landmark work is that democracy will triumph over racism. The effects of this work are difficult to underestimate, and it not only changed the view on racial issues in America, it also directly influenced the US Supreme Court in 1954 to outlaw racial segregation in public schools (Brown versus Board of Education).
