D'un roman à l'autre. Manuscrit autographe et tapuscrit complets.

S.n. (Journal des débats) 1944 - - S.n. (Journal des débats), s.l. (Paris) s.d. (1944), 13,5x21,5cm & 2 pages in-4, 2 1/2 pages in-8. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Deadline" by Cleve Cartmill in Astounding Science Fiction: March 1944

Street & Smith Pub. Inc, 1944-03-01. Paperback. Good. FIRST EDITION. New York: Street & Smith Publications, 1944. Vol. XXXII, No. 1. 178 pages. Wraps. Good condition. Clean pages, toned with age. Wear at extremities (especially at foot and bottom corner). Table of contents page torn, missing top fifth or so of page. Tear in pg. 35. Wear spot on back cover. Good condition overall. The extremely rare issue of the magazine Astounding Science Fiction that contained the story "Deadline" by Cleve Cartmill. Although set on another planet, it apparently describes isotope separation and a weapon similar to the (then) top-secret atomic bomb, causing an uproar within the highest levels of the American government. Military Intelligence enlisted Cartmill's mailman as a confidential informant. The FBI investigated the author as well, commanding him to not write about such matters, and the magazine's editor (John Campbell) and other authors connected to the magazine such as Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein. Rumor has it that many copies of the magazine were bought up by the government and destroyed to preserve the intense secrecy of the Manhattan Project. Whether or not that rumor is true, today it is quite scarce.

Montgomery

In early 1944, British Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Colin Braithwaite (1913-2000) was asked by Lieutenant General Miles Dempsey, commander of the Second Army to fly back with him from North Africa to the United Kingdom to help plan the D-Day landings. The Second Army was the main British force ?" it also included Canadian forces ?" involved in the D-Day landings, making successful assaults at Gold, Juno and Sword beaches. These assaults were followed by the Anglo-Canadian forces making a rapid advance across northern France into Belgium, liberating Brussels and Antwerp in September 1944. On October 15, 1944, during a visit to the Second Army, King George VI knighted Dempsey on the battlefield. On November 29, 1944, Lt. Gen. Sir Miles Dempsey recommended Braithwaite be awarded the Order of the British Empire (photocopy of his recommendation is present). On March 29, 1945, it was announced in the ?London Gazette? that Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Colin Braithwaite of the Royal Regiment of Artillery had been awarded the

THE GASTRONOMICAL ME. (Association copy - Arnold Gingrich)

NY: Duell, Sloan, & Pearce, (1944). First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Mild wear to spine ends, darkening to front free endpapers, owner name (Lise Miller / Los Angeles / June 1944) to title page, else very good in moderately worn pictorial jacket with chips to spine ends. x, 295 pp., 8vo, original green cloth. In the first issue pictorial dustjacket with the suppressed photograph of the author in a sultry pose on rear jacket panel. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY MFK FISHER on the front free endpaper: "Lise and Gardiner Miller - how surprising! - Koszul (?) and now California - and always my best - MFK Fisher, chez Blyth - 21.xi.47." The cryptic inscription is possibly in reference to the name and address penned to the verso of the front jacket flap in MFK Fisher's hand (different ink, different nib than ffep inscription): "Arnold Gingrich / Le Paquis / St. Saphorin / Lavaux / Vaud / Switzerland." “Le Paquis” was the idyllic cottage and property overlooking the Swiss Riviera originally owned by author and illustrator Dillwyn (Tim) Parrish and his sister Anne Parrish. In 1933 Dillwyn and his wife Gigi were neighbors of MFK Fisher and her first husband Alfred (Al) in Southern California’s Long Beach. The 2 couples became close friends and endeavored to form an artists’ colony at Le Paquis before the breakup of both marriages in 1937. MFK and Dillwyn, who were married in 1938, were unable to keep the Swiss property due to financial pressures. This history is the subject of much of “The Gastronomical Me” (Dillwyn is called "Chexbres" in the book), though not all the details are revealed. Joan Reardon in her biography of MFK Fisher “Poet of the Appetites”(North Point Press, 2004) fills in many of the gaps, and in his memoir “Toys of a Lifetime” (Knopf, 1966). Arnold Gingrich (1903-1976) – editor, publisher, founder of Esquire magazine, provides more. Gingrich, who in 1943 had contracted with MFK to write a monthly food-related column for “Coronet” magazine, remembers purchasing Le Paquis in 1945 from the Dutch doctor who had bought the property from MFK and Dillwyn in 1939. This, according to Gingrich, was accomplished through the agency of MFK (Parrish had died in 1941), who was contacted by Dr. de Jonge – hoping to sell the property back to her – on the same day that Gingrich called her wondering if she still owned Le Paquis and wanted to sell! MFK told a different story in a 1966 letter to her friend Grace Holmes (within which she confesses to the kindling of a romance with Gingrich) – MFK states that “He (Gingrich) and his wife bought Le Paquis from Timmie and me.” (Reardon, p. 333). The two had kept in touch with one another over the years – including Gingrich sending MFK a wedding announcement (of his third marriage) in 1952 and MFK contacting Gingrich in the early 1960s in hopes of buying Le Paquis back from him (he had already sold it). Their romance, which began in 1966 and lasted until Gingrich’s death in 1976, was, according to Reardon, “inevitable.” One can only speculate on when, and under what circumstance, MFK wrote Arnold Gingrich’s name and Le Paquis address on the underside of the front jacket flap of her fourth book, And what she meant by the inscription she penned to the endpaper in 1947: “Koszul”? “Chez Blyth”? In 1947 MFK was living with her third husband, Donald Friede, and her 2 children in Los Angeles and struggling to support the family with her writing. Whatever the story, an early inscription, together with a provocative association.& & & & & &

Princeton: Princeton University Press; London: Humphrey Milford, Oxford University Press, 1944. Princeton: Princeton University Press; London: Humphrey Milford, Oxford University Press,, 1944. A Fragment of Life. Translated by David F. Swenson and Lillian Marvin Swenson. 2 volumes, octavo. Original dark blue cloth, titles to spines gilt. With the dust jackets. A few tiny white specks to boards. An excellent set in lightly tanned jackets with very minor chipping and one small faint green mark to rear panel of Vol. II. A particularly fresh set in excellent condition. First edition in English, first impression. Søren Kierkegaard wrote Either/Or in his late twenties, "under a variety of pseudonyms (all recognizable), the chief advantage of this method seems to have been to give Kierkegaard the opportunity of letting different sides of his mind converse as individuals with each other, in a semi-Socratic fashion. Without disclosing his real beliefs, he confronted his readers with a choice of different possibilities [...]. Choice, as the title of his work suggests, was at the root of Kierkegaard's theory. There can be no system of existence, only a system of ideas. From this he develops his theory of 'Existence' (since taken up by the modern Existentialists), in which human beings considered as subjects not objects are the only real existence: their reflective as opposed to active nature being focused on the 'acts' of making perpetual decisions" (PMM). Originally published in Denmark in 1843, a centenary before its first English translation, under the title Enten-Eller. With the original publisher's invoice laid in.
