They Also Ran: the Story of the Men Who Were Defeated for the Presidency. Signed and with Irving Stone Letter to Mrs Darrow

1944, 1944 - (DARROW, Mrs. Clarence.) Irving STONE. They Also Ran: the Story of the MenWho Were Defeated for the Presidency. New York: Doubleday, Doran, 1944. Autograph presentation copy -- to Mrs. Clarence Darrow -- signed and dated. Pp. xi, [vi], 389. 8vo. Orig. green cloth with titling to spine in bronze. With dust jacket. -- WITH -- TLS of Irving Stone, of same date, to Mrs. Darrow. The publication of Stone's biography of Darrow, Clarence Darrow for theDefense, preceded that of They Also Ran by two years. Stone wrote to the widow of Clarence Darrow in a separately mailed letter which begins with hismentioning the pleasure he has of sending her a copy of the book. The inscription to Mrs. Darrow on the half-title of They Also Ran reads: "For Mrs Clarence Darrow -- great wife, great marital partner, great American woman. With admiration and love, Irving Stone / Encino Calif / April 7, 1944"; while the letter speaks in brief of Stone's several demanding projects at the time, as well as of thoughts he is sure Mrs. Darrow shares on the influenceof Clarence Darrow for the Defense in perpetuating the name of her late husband. The book is very good, having the usual light browning throughout dueto its publication on war-time paper. The book's dustjacket is fair (but unfaded), being rather brittle overall, and having considerable chipping along extremities with some loss of design. The letter is very good, showing evidence of some moderate handling, and is accompanied by its neatly openedenvelope. For both the book and letter. 2,000.00 [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Collection of Correspondence from Pin-Up Artist Alberto Vargas

1944-1973. A collection of 12 letters, cards, and publicity photos from Alberto Vargas and his wife, Anna Mae Clift, to a devoted collector, including an Autographed Note Signed ("Alberto") and three Christmas cards Signed with his stylized signature, fine. The letters and notes begin in 1961 and end shortly before the passing of Clift in 1973, a death from which Vargas never truly recovered. The letters are in response to complimentary notes sent by the collector to Vargas and include many references to his work. Each is composed with warmth and they include details about the couple's personal lives including Vargas's experience judging the Miss Universe contest and his lawsuits against Esquire magazine. (The magazine successfully laid claim to the term "Varga Girl" as well as the "Varga" signature, and the legal costs forced him to struggle financially for years until his 1960s "Vargas Girls" work for Playboy.) One of the Christmas cards includes a note from Vargas gifting the collector an unpublished original piece of artwork for being a "staunch defender and protector of 'my girls'"; a gift that sadly no longer accompanies the letter. The correspondence also includes five glossy publicity photos from World Wide Photo, dated between 1944-1949, showing Vargas with Clift, working at his drawing table, and with various models, along with the original prepared captions tipped on the verso. Several of the letters are written by Clift and one includes a comment about Vargas's devotion to his work: "He is truly a remarkable person. But without his work he would be lost." It's a particularly poignant thought from his wife, whose death left him devastated and ended his career. Further details available upon request. An interesting and thoughtful collection of correspondence and photos from one of the greatest pin-up artist of the 20th Century, and the wife who inspired his work. Further details available upon request. .
