The Eve of Action

Belfast: W. & G. Baird,, 1944. Greatest Allied Operation in the Spring" A Verbatim report on Mr. Churchill's speech delivered on 22nd Feb. 1944 to the British House of Commons. Small quarto. Single quire, wire stitched into the original red wrappers printed in black. Housed in a black cloth slipcase. Frontis portrait of the author. An excellent copy. First Edition, First Impression. "This is no time for sorrow or rejoicing. It is a time for preparation and resolve." In his speech to the House Churchill laid particular emphasis on the Anglo-American air offensive, "the most violent attacks which have yet been made on Germany." He also referred to the continuing campaign in Italy, the situation in Greece and the Balkans, relations with the Russians, and concluded by stressing the Allied common cause; "British and Americans are linked together in the noblest comradeship of war under the fire and flail of the enemy." A distinctly uncommon wartime publication. Woods notes that it was "also printed twice by the Political Warfare Executive in 1944."

        Fable

(Frederic Prokosch), New York 1944 - First edition. Marbled self-wrappers with pink printed label. 24mo. Fine. Out of a total edition of 44 copies, this appears to be one of the 22 copies on airmail paper for Europe; there were also 22 copies on Utopian Text paper for the U.S. Inscribed by the author: "For Emerald from Frederic with love." A brief poem, one of the author's rare "butterfly books," this one issued as a Christmas Greeting. Prokosch was an American novelist of remarkable promise who later fell under a cloud for manufacturing some spurious "rare first editions," which he did while experimenting with the handpress he used to manufacture the butterfly books. While he did reprint some of the butterfly books between 1978-1980, the provenance of this copy and the owner's notes that accompany it indicate that it was obtained in the 1950s. His reputation has suffered despite the fact that his books were both a critical and popular success at the time of publication. Rare. *OCLC* locates five copies (of the total edition) in institutions. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Romans fantastiques. Manuscrit autographe et tapuscrit complets

S.n. (Journal des débats) 1944 - - S.n. (Journal des débats), s.l. (Paris) s.d. (1944), 13,5x21,5cm & 2 pages in-4, 2 1/2 pages in-8. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Studies on the chemical nature of the substance including transformation of pneumococcal types. Induction of transformation by an deoxyribonucleic acvid fraction isolated from pneumococcus type III (137-158).

. J. exp. Med., 79. New York, The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, 1944, 8°, V, 679 pp., 65 Fig., 16 Taf., Leinenband der Zeit; St.a.Tit.. FIRST DESCRIPTION of DNA - Oswald Theodore Avery (1877-1955) was a Canadian-born American physician and medical researcher. The major part of his career was spent at the Rockefeller Institute Hospital in New York City. Avery was one of the first molecular biologists and was a pioneer in immunochemistry, but he is best known for his discovery in 1944 with his co-workers Colin MacLeod (1909-1972) and Maclyn McCarty (1911-2005) that eoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is the basic material respnsibple for geneticv transformations. - ASA BEGINNER in science, Colin Munro MacLeod was granted the most wonderful of gifts, a key role in a major discovery that greatly changed the course of biology. - Great as this gift was, it came not as unalloyed treasure. On the contrary, for reasons that are not wholly clear even today, the demonstration by Avery, MacLeod, and McCarty that deoxyribonucleic acid is the stuff that genes are made of was slow to receive general acceptance and has never really been saluted in appropriately formal fashion. The event was originally recorded in the now famous paper of 1944 in the Journal of Experimental Medicine,' entitled: "Studies on the Chemical Nature of the Substance Inducing Transformation of Pneumococcal Types. Induction of Transformation by a Desoxyribonucleic Acid Fraction Isolated from Pneumococcus Type III." - The title tells the story; clearly this was an historic watershed. Sir MacFarland Burnett states that "the discovery that DNA could transfer genetic information from one pneumococcus to another heralded the opening of the field of molecular biology." Writing in Nature in the month before MacLeod died, H. V. Wyatt reports it as "generally accepted" that the field of molecular biology began with the appearance of this paper. Lederberg terms the work "the most seminal discovery of twentieth-century biology." Walsh MCDermott, COLIN MUNRO MACLEOD January 28, 1909-February 11, 1972 - - Garrison & Morton No. 255.3

        Stephen Hero

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1944. Part of the first draft of 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man'. Edited with an introduction by Theodore Spencer. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. Bookseller's ticket to the front pastedown. Some minor foxing to the edges; an excellent copy in the slightly toned jacket that has some nicks to the extremities. First UK edition, first impression. Stephen Hero is the abandoned first draft of what was later to become Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, saved from the fire (into which Joyce had thrown it) by his wife and published posthumously. Described by Theodore Spencer as "one of the best descriptions of a growing mind that has ever been written", this autobiographical fragment survives as proof of Joyce's nascent genius.
