Dymock's Book Arcade, Sydney 1944 - First Australian edition of one of the most influential and popular expositions of classical liberalism published. Octavo, original cloth. A very good copy in a very good dust jacket that has some tape reinforcement to the verso. "Hayek has written one of the most important books of our generation. It restates for our time the issue between liberty and authority with the power and rigor of reasoning that John Stuart Mill stated in his great essay, 'On Liberty'" (Hazlitt, 82). [I]n my opinion it is a grand book. . . . Morally and philosophically I find myself in agreement with virtually the whole of it: and not only in agreement with it, but in deeply moved agreement" (John Maynard Keynes). The Road To Serfdom placed fourth on the list of the 100 best non-fiction books of the twentieth century by National Review magazine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1944 - Single sheet of stout card measuring approx. 4.5 x 7.5 inches (12.0 x 19.0 cms), obverse with gilt edges printed with the insignia of 'Admiral Inspector of the Fleet' in gilt and black and seasonal text in black; reverse blank. The seasonal text, SIGNED BY DONITZ IN BLUE INK , reads 'Grossadmiral Donitz dankt fur die guten Wunsche zum Weihachtsfest und zum neuen jahr und erwidert sie herzlich'. Grossadmiral Karl Donitz (1871-1980), German naval leader and Hitler's successor, commanded the Kriegsmarine during the latter half of WWII and is remembered particularly for his promotion of the U-boat offensive. He also served as Reichspraesident following Hitler's suicide in April 1945. Having authorised the German surrender he became a prisoner-of-war of the British and was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment for war crimes (primarily for ordering unrestricted submarine warfare). Following his release from Spandau in October 1956, Donitz's reputation underwent a degree of rehabilitation and he took considerable pains to answer correspondence and to provide autographs when required (including a facsimile for historians and collectors of the Articles of Surrender which he co-signed with Montgomery). HOWEVER, DOCUMENTS SIGNED BY DONITZ DURING THE WAR YEARS ARE SCARCE. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        The Dark Page

Duell Sloane and Pearce, New York 1944 - A good copy of the stated second printing in a poor dust-jacket, warmly inscribed (with a self-portrait) and signed by Fuller in pencil on the front free endpaper. Binding is solid, but shows some shelf-wear along the bottom edges. The dust-jacket is missing a section along the top eighth of the front panel, and is abraded visibly in several spots midway down the spine. There is an intact tear along the upper edge of the rear panel. Protected by Brodart cover.       Salvador Chávez Hayhoe, Mexico City 1944 - 3 volumes: xl+768+[lxvii] pages with folding map and index; xiii+623+lxvi pages; [x]+634+xliv pages; Quarto (12" x 8 1/4") bound in full leather with gilt decorative lettering to spine and board to boards. From the library of George M Foster. 3d edition. Juan de Torquemada was born between 1557 and 1565 and arrived in New Spain as a child. He studied philosophy and Nahuatl at the convent Grande de San Francisco in Mexico City, where he was ordained in 1579. In 1582 he moved to the convent of Santiago Tlatelolco, and he was made guardian of that convent in 1600. He also took over the administration of the Colegio de Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco. Beginning in 1604 he traveled continually on the business of his order. He was guardian of the convents of Zacatlán (in the mountains of Puebla) and Tlaxcala. In 1607, during the terrible flood of Mexico City, he was asked by Viceroy Juan de Mendoza y Luna, marqués de Montesclaros to reconstruct the calzadas (carriageways) of Chapultepec, Misterios to Tepeyac and San Cristóbal and the dams of Zumpango and Citlaltépetl, although he was not an engineer. In 1609 he was named chronologist of the Franciscan Order. In 1610 Torquemada oversaw construction of the monastery and church of Santiago Tlatelolco. Its interior featured a grandiose altarpiece decorated with paintings by Baltasar de Echave Orio surrounding a hand-carved relief of Santiago, but this was destroyed soon afterwards. In 1614 Torquemada was elected provincial superior of the Order of St. Francis in Mexico.[2] He held this position until 1617. He died suddenly in the church of Santiago Tlatelolco in 1624, while singing matins. His main work is Los veintiún libros rituales i monarchia indiana con el origen y guerras de los Indios Occidentales, de sus poblaciones, descubrimientos, conquista, conversión y otras cosas maravillosas de la misma tierra (The Twenty-one Ritual Books and Indian Monarchy With the Origin and Wars of the West Indians, of Their Populations, Discoveries, Conquest, Conversion and Other Marvelous Things of the Same Land, usually known as Monarchia Indiana) (3 volumes, Seville, 1615). The first edition is rare, but the work was reprinted in Madrid in 1723 and again in a facsimile edition by Salvador Chávez Hayhoe in 1943-44. This was the only New Spain chronicle of its time known to contemporaries. Works of Toribio de Benavente Motolinia, Bernardino de Sahagún, Gerónimo de Mendieta, Diego Muñoz Camargo and others were not available for centuries. The book is tedious to read because of its theological digressions, contradictions and anachronisms. Nevertheless, it gathers together a large quantity of information taken from Indigenous pictographs and manuscripts and from Franciscan and other Catholic scholars. Torquemada interviewed old Indigenous people about their ancestors and recorded their oral traditions. The Monarchia Indiana is the best work on what was known of the Indigenous past at the beginning of the seventeenth century. It is considered an especially important source on the Totonac, Pipil and Nicoya cultures. George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(Bari) 1944 - Ivan Goran Kovacic (Lukovdol, Gorski Kotar, 21. 3. 1913. Uvezano u tvrdi uvez radi zastite orignalnog izdanja. ******************************************************************************************************* Ivan Goran Kovacic (21 March 1913 - 13 July 1943) was a prominent Croatian poet and writer of the 20th century. He was born in Lukovdol, Croatia as Ivan Kovacic. His middle name Goran stems from that ("goran" meaning "hill-man"). During World War II, he joined the Partisan forces. His best known work is "Jama" (The Pit), which ranks among the most celebrated Croatian poems ever written. He penned it during the war, while in service near the city of Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The poem was written out of intellectual and ethical responsibility that condemns fascist atrocities committed by the Ustase. Ivan Goran Kovacic was killed by Serbian Chetnik troops in an east-Bosnian village of Vrbica near Foca on July 13, 1943. His grave is unknown. This poem was printed in Bari. Italy on September 16, 1944. Introduction and foreword with explanations and clarifications of the poem by Ivo Frol. In Croatian, 32 pages. The original edition is in softcover and hardcover is put for the protection of the original edition. On title page some ink marks, upper right corner a bit torn, also a safety ribbon on the spine of the original edition, othervise in good condition. This is one of the most important anti-fascist work in European litarature and it's translated to many languages. Extremly rare, only one copy in NSK. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Advance copy, an uncorrected galley proof, bound in plain, unprinted tannish wrappers, printed on rectos only, a very scarce advanced state of this minor, or not so minor, Steinbeck masterpiece whose themes of death and loneliness are masked by its surface layer of humor, all the more rare in that this is an Author Presentation Copy, Inscribed by Steinbeck to the best man at his second marriage, Howard O. Hunter, who was the Works Progress Administration (WPA) commissioner in the early 1940s under the FDR administration, Steinbeck and his second wife, Gwen Conger, were married March 29, 1943, just 11 days after receiving his final divorce decree from his first wife, Carol, Steinbeck has Inscribed the first priminary as follows, "For Howard/who really/belongs in/Cannery Row/John Steinbeck/last night in New York 1944," this galley lacks all the preliminaries found in the 1945 published version such as half titles, title page, copyright page, dedication page, etc., although not specifically cited in Goldstone & Payne, there is a notation under G&P A22a that "a copy of the unrevised galley proofs is in the Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas," see Morrow 172 (that copy with a yellow label on front giving publication date and price that is not on this copy--the Morrow copy was not signed or inscribed), now housed in a beautiful custom clamshell case with leather spine, laid in loosely is a letter of provenance from Ellen Leonard who was given this proof by Hunter's wife, Edna.         Russian Ecclesiastical and Decorative Art Objects in the Collection of George R. Hann: Watercolor illustrations by A[ndrey] Avinoff

n.p, 1944 - Mr. Hann's own record of his distinguished collection. The two large albums have typewritten title pages, and consist of original watercolors, inset behind transparent protective coverings on the rectos, with typewritten descriptions of a high order of scholarship on the facing versos, each volume illustrating 42 items: crosses, medallions, mitres, lamps, censers and other liturgical items, as well as silver, Imperial china table services, a silver spade used by Alexander II in laying the foundation of the Odessa City Park, and other relics of a non- ecclesiastical sort. Andrey Arvinoff (1884-1949), a Russian artist who emigrated to America after the Bolshevik revolution, specialized in landscapes and portraits; he also had a successful career in commercial art. He was noted for his imaginative and skillful detail, art critics praising his "purity of line that can come from only the most delicate perception" and observing "like the other Russians who have come here, he loves to use details in wholesome quantities." In the commercial art field, his nephew Alex Shoumatoff notes in the family chronicle Russian Blood, "his renditions of everyday household articles attracted attention as works of art." In 1922 he was recruited by the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh to be a curator of entomology and in 1926 became the museum's director. In addition, he taught courses on Oriental and Russian art at the University of Pittsburgh. He was the ideal artist to depict George Hann's Russian objects, and his watercolors, done over pencil, are careful but not fussy; where, as is often the case, the objects are set with precious stones, his drawings shine with a radiant sparkle. A SPLENDID, UNIQUE RECORD OF ART TREASURES WHICH IS ITSELF A WORK OF ART. Accompanying these volumes is the catalogue of an exhibition of Russian Icons and other works of art from Mr. Hann's collection held at Carnegie Institute in 1944. It is finely bound in dark brown calf, gilt device on upper cover; apart from a little wear to extremities, it is in fine condition, and displays some of the items illustrated in the two albums 2 vols., Folio (13 x 11-1/2 in.). A total of 100 watercolors, each about 5 inches high by 3 inches wide; 84 of them mounted in two volumes, the remainder loose. Two full dark blue calf albums, gilt on upper covers and spines, patterned fabric doublures, linen hinges (to allow the thick volumes to open flat); fine condition. With the bookplate of George Rice Hann and that of the Library of the Westmoreland County Museum of Art in each volume [Attributes: Hard Cover]

RETURN OF THE APE MAN (1944)

Monogram 1944 - Vintage original 22 x 28" (55 x 71 cm.) half sheet poster, USA. Bela Lugosi, John Carradine, George Zucco, Frank Moran, Teala Loring, Tod Andrews, dir: Phil Rosen; Monogram. Two scientists on an expedition in the Arctic find the frozen body of a prehistoric caveman. They bring him to their laboratory and decide they need to transplant a new brain into him so as they can control him. George Zucco started production as the caveman but became ill and was replaced by Frank Moran (on this poster). His contract stipulated he must have third billing and so that is on the poster. He appears in the final film as the frozen caveman only. The Arctic footage was taken from a 1926 short called ALASKAN ADVENTURES. As always, Lugosi played his role of Prof. Dexter with Shakespearean aplomb. Paper-backed, NEAR FINE.
