        Strange Fruit. A Novel.

New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1944 - Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, titles to spine and upper board in white and yellow. With the dust jacket. A little loss of size to lower edges, but overall cloth bright and fresh. An excellent copy in the crisp dust jacket. First edition, first printing of this important novel dealing with interracial romance and lynching in the Southern United States. Immediately controversial, it was banned in a number of cities and prohibited from being mailed through the US Postal Service. Though the title may have been inspired by the Billie Holiday song of the same name, the author reported that she used the term "strange fruit" to describe the way that the culture of racial prejudice twisted and destroyed the lives of everyone it encompassed, black or white. A beautiful copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

HILVERSUM BUSSUM ALMERE HOLLAND NETHERLANDS NL 1944 - On offer is a small, intriguing, significant handwritten Dutch language World War II diary which details in everyday language the final horrible last days of the Nazi occupation of Holland and the invasion to drive them out. Running out of everyday supplies and food the Dutch were on the verge of death from starvation our unidentified author recounts the events of the day, inventories what few food and basics he has saved and traded off and then provides anecdotal references of the common shared experience of the destitute Dutch. Most interesting are entries wherein our author relates for example taking some milk from someone as a 'trade' for his pet cat the writer is sure that they stole and most likely ate. Horror is also on the author's mind as he relates the roundup of men in Hilversum and region which apparently where the writer is based. This is truly a heartbreaking read given that the Dutch were aware of the oncoming Allied victory yet still they starved and died before the supply trains and infrastructure could be rebuilt.         Portrait of Paul Robeson as Othello

New York, june 1, 1944. (ROBESON, PAUL) 9-3/4 x 7-1/4. Full length, in costume designed by Robert Edmond Jones. Vintage gelatin silver print. Very good, archival mounting tape on recto. Embossed stamp lower front, atelier stamped on verso: "Photograph by Carl Van Vechten | 101 Central Park West | Cannot be reproduced without permission", and docketed by Van Vechten in ink, giving the subject of the photograph ("Paul Robeson as Othello"), the date, and the number of the negative . Superb, brooding image of Robeson in one of the most famous performances in American theater history. Robeson had originally played Othello in in a 1930 English production, opposite Dame Peggy Ashcroft as Desdemona, but American taboos against mixed-race casting prevented an American production for years, and was not until 1943 that Robeson's Othello was ventured in the States. The New York production of Othello at the Schubert Theater with Paul Robeson in the lead, Uta Hagen as Desdemona and José Ferrer as Iago, had the longest run of any Shakespeare play to that time (289 performances), opening on Oct. 19, 1943 and closing n July 1, 1944. It was the first time in US history that an Afro-American portrayed Othello on the stage, and audiences were riveted to see a black man kiss a white woman

Christmas Card for 1944. SIGNED BY DONITZ IN 1944

1944 - Single sheet of stout card measuring approx. 4.5 x 7.5 inches (12.0 x 19.0 cms), obverse with gilt edges printed with the insignia of 'Admiral Inspector of the Fleet' in gilt and black and seasonal text in black; reverse blank. The seasonal text, SIGNED BY DONITZ IN BLUE INK , reads 'Grossadmiral Donitz dankt fur die guten Wunsche zum Weihachtsfest und zum neuen jahr und erwidert sie herzlich'. Grossadmiral Karl Donitz (1871-1980), German naval leader and Hitler's successor, commanded the Kriegsmarine during the latter half of WWII and is remembered particularly for his promotion of the U-boat offensive. He also served as Reichspraesident following Hitler's suicide in April 1945. Having authorised the German surrender he became a prisoner-of-war of the British and was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment for war crimes (primarily for ordering unrestricted submarine warfare). Following his release from Spandau in October 1956, Donitz's reputation underwent a degree of rehabilitation and he took considerable pains to answer correspondence and to provide autographs when required (including a facsimile for historians and collectors of the Articles of Surrender which he co-signed with Montgomery). HOWEVER, DOCUMENTS SIGNED BY DONITZ DURING THE WAR YEARS ARE SCARCE. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
