        Stephen Hero

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1944. Part of the first draft of 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man'. Edited with an introduction by Theodore Spencer. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. Bookseller's ticket to the front pastedown. Some minor foxing to the edges; an excellent copy in the slightly toned jacket that has some nicks to the extremities. First UK edition, first impression. Stephen Hero is the abandoned first draft of what was later to become Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, saved from the fire (into which Joyce had thrown it) by his wife and published posthumously. Described by Theodore Spencer as "one of the best descriptions of a growing mind that has ever been written", this autobiographical fragment survives as proof of Joyce's nascent genius.

De Jean-Paul à Giraudoux. Manuscrit autographe et tapuscrit complets.

S.n. (Journal des débats) 1944 - - S.n. (Journal des débats), s.l. (Paris) s.d. (1944), 13,5x21,5cm & 2 pages in-4, 2 1/2 pages in-8. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

His poetry is said to reflect "ainda as apreensões, esperanças e angústias do seu tempo, dentro de um ângulo individualista e, no fundo, religioso de visão, e a sua pureza e originalidade rítmicas, a coerência orgânica das suas imagens impõem?se ?"?Saraiva & Lopes, @História da literatura Portuguesa (17 ed., 2001), p. 1015.Adolfo [Corrêa] Rocha, who wrote under the pseudonym Miguel Torga, made major contributions to Portuguese prose and poetry. Born in 1907 in S. Martinho de Anta, Trás-os-Montes, he made his literary debut in 1928 with @Ansiedade (not offered for sale to the public), followed by @Rampa, 1930, @Tributo, 1931, and Abismo, 1932 - all innovative in form and nonconformist in content. He gained wide public acclaim in 1936, with @O outro Livro de Job, and his autobiographical series @A criação do Mundo (os dos primeiros dias), 1937, @O terceiro dia da criação do Mundo, 1939, and @O quarto dia da criação do Mundo, 1939, is considered one of the major Portuguese prose works of this century. Torga was associated with the second Modernist movement, but broke away from it in 1930 to follow his own path: "verdadeiramente inconfundivel, caracterizado por um realismo de sentido individualizante, de feição violenta e vitalista, socialmente responsabilizado e responsabilizador" (Magalhães Gonçalves p. 12).@Provenance: According to penciled inscriptions we have seen in other volumes with similar presentation inscriptions, bindings, and provenance (in the hand of the Porto bookseller Manuel Ferreria [?] or of Diogo Lafões [?]), "Jose Maria" was José Maria Reis Pereira, who wrote under the pseudonym José Régio, one of the most important forces in the second wave of Portuguese modernism. Régio collaborated with Torga on the influential literary review @Presença. However, we have been informed by a colleague who handled a similar volume in which the full name of the recipient was present in the inscription, that "José Maria" was José Maria Lopes Gomes, apparently an old friend. Dom Diogo de Bragança (Lafões) (Lisbon, 1930-Lisbon, 2012) was an accomplished equestrian, author of books on dressage, and a dedicated bibliophile whose collection focused on books about horses and horsemanship, plus works on Portuguese history and literature. Dom Diogo used the courtesy title Marquês de Marialva, by permission of his elder brother, Dom Lopo de Bragança, Duque de Lafões, the actual holder of the title. For the bookplate, see Avelar Duarte, @Ex-libris portugueses heráldicos.         They Also Ran: the Story of the Men Who Were Defeated for the Presidency. Signed and with Irving Stone Letter to Mrs Darrow

1944, 1944 - (DARROW, Mrs. Clarence.) Irving STONE. They Also Ran: the Story of the MenWho Were Defeated for the Presidency. New York: Doubleday, Doran, 1944. Autograph presentation copy -- to Mrs. Clarence Darrow -- signed and dated. Pp. xi, [vi], 389. 8vo. Orig. green cloth with titling to spine in bronze. With dust jacket. -- WITH -- TLS of Irving Stone, of same date, to Mrs. Darrow. The publication of Stone's biography of Darrow, Clarence Darrow for theDefense, preceded that of They Also Ran by two years. Stone wrote to the widow of Clarence Darrow in a separately mailed letter which begins with hismentioning the pleasure he has of sending her a copy of the book. The inscription to Mrs. Darrow on the half-title of They Also Ran reads: "For Mrs Clarence Darrow -- great wife, great marital partner, great American woman. With admiration and love, Irving Stone / Encino Calif / April 7, 1944"; while the letter speaks in brief of Stone's several demanding projects at the time, as well as of thoughts he is sure Mrs. Darrow shares on the influenceof Clarence Darrow for the Defense in perpetuating the name of her late husband. The book is very good, having the usual light browning throughout dueto its publication on war-time paper. The book's dustjacket is fair (but unfaded), being rather brittle overall, and having considerable chipping along extremities with some loss of design. The letter is very good, showing evidence of some moderate handling, and is accompanied by its neatly openedenvelope. For both the book and letter. 2,000.00 [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Some staining at edges, half-inch by inch portion torn away at mostly blank left margin, surface creases. In 1939, a friend, Jack Healy, took him to New York?s famous Stillman's Gym to see if he could put his street fighting instincts to use in the ring. When a seasoned pro named Antonio Fernandez beat him up, he swore he would never box again. Two months later, however, he was back in the ring, this time fighting under the name of his sister?s boyfriend, Rocky Graziano.
