        Typed Letters Signed

First. Four typed letters Signed, dated Dec. 4, 1944 through Jan. 25, 1945, to Margaret Cuthbert, the Director of Women's Programs at NBC in New York, regarding his participation in NBC's Great Novels radio program. In the course of the correspondence Cuthbert arranged for Hilton to introduce "Pickwick" and Jane Eyre. But in the final letter Hilton declines, explaining, "When $100 was first offered I accepted... regarding the sum as a honorarium ... (my previous fee for a radio appearance... had been $1750). As, however, you now seem to think $100 is a little bit too much, it really does occur to me that $75 is a little bit too little." A nice little archive of correspondence. .

        ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR, SIGNED AND DATED

[Probably Big Sur, Ca.]. 1944.. Original watercolor on paper, 27.5 x 35cm, floated on mat, framed under glass, in shadow- box style. Fine. A vintage, highly characteristic watercolor from the period of Miller's residence in Big Sur, when he actively solicited financial assistance in exchange for his paintings to enable him to survive and continue writing (ref: AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL AND SUNDRY, etc etc). The dominant colors are orange, pink, green and white, with accents in red and black, within a black and green wash border. The painting depicts two human figures against a green field, within a white irregular "protective" oval on the left side, isolated against a larger orange and pink background, juxtaposed with a more hostile appearing form on the right within its own shell of jagged concentric ovals. Signed in full and dated in the lower right.

Juristischer Teil a) Bericht des vom Reichsjustizministerium entsandten juristischen Sachverständigen, Senatspräsident Dr. Ziegler. b) Vernehmungsprotokolle".

Studies on the chemical nature of the substance including transformation of pneumococcal types. Induction of transformation by an deoxyribonucleic acvid fraction isolated from pneumococcus type III (137-158).

      - J. exp. Med., 79. New York, The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, 1944, 8°, V, 679 pp., 65 Fig., 16 Taf., Leinenband der Zeit; St.a.Tit. FIRST DESCRIPTION of DNA - Oswald Theodore Avery (1877-1955) was a Canadian-born American physician and medical researcher. The major part of his career was spent at the Rockefeller Institute Hospital in New York City. Avery was one of the first molecular biologists and was a pioneer in immunochemistry, but he is best known for his discovery in 1944 with his co-workers Colin MacLeod (1909-1972) and Maclyn McCarty (1911-2005) that eoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is the basic material respnsibple for geneticv transformations. - ASA BEGINNER in science, Colin Munro MacLeod was granted the most wonderful of gifts, a key role in a major discovery that greatly changed the course of biology. - Great as this gift was, it came not as unalloyed treasure. On the contrary, for reasons that are not wholly clear even today, the demonstration by Avery, MacLeod, and McCarty that deoxyribonucleic acid is the stuff that genes are made of was slow to receive general acceptance and has never really been saluted in appropriately formal fashion. The event was originally recorded in the now famous paper of 1944 in the Journal of Experimental Medicine,' entitled: "Studies on the Chemical Nature of the Substance Inducing Transformation of Pneumococcal Types. Induction of Transformation by a Desoxyribonucleic Acid Fraction Isolated from Pneumococcus Type III." - The title tells the story; clearly this was an historic watershed. Sir MacFarland Burnett states that "the discovery that DNA could transfer genetic information from one pneumococcus to another heralded the opening of the field of molecular biology." Writing in Nature in the month before MacLeod died, H. V. Wyatt reports it as "generally accepted" that the field of molecular biology began with the appearance of this paper. Lederberg terms the work "the most seminal discovery of twentieth-century biology."         Fable

(Frederic Prokosch), New York 1944 - First edition. Marbled self-wrappers with pink printed label. 24mo. Fine. Out of a total edition of 44 copies, this appears to be one of the 22 copies on airmail paper for Europe; there were also 22 copies on Utopian Text paper for the U.S. Inscribed by the author: "For Emerald from Frederic with love." A brief poem, one of the author's rare "butterfly books," this one issued as a Christmas Greeting. Prokosch was an American novelist of remarkable promise who later fell under a cloud for manufacturing some spurious "rare first editions," which he did while experimenting with the handpress he used to manufacture the butterfly books. While he did reprint some of the butterfly books between 1978-1980, the provenance of this copy and the owner's notes that accompany it indicate that it was obtained in the 1950s. His reputation has suffered despite the fact that his books were both a critical and popular success at the time of publication. Rare. *OCLC* locates five copies (of the total edition) in institutions. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
