THE BEDCHAMBER MYSTERY. With which is included the story of The Eleven Deckchairs and Modernity and Maternity.

S.J. Reginald Saunders, Toronto 1944 - True First & Only Edition. 8vo. 70pp. A superb copy, quite fine, in the publisher's original pictorial paper-covered-boards which are fresh & free of the usual edgewear & cracking endemic to this title - Upper cover illustrated in gray & navy, lettered in blue at the spine - In a truly amazing & beautiful example of the original pictorial dustwrapper [published slightly oversized & therefore prone to heavy wear] - this copy virtually flawless - the dustwrapper illustration & design a match for that of the binding. One short closed tear, a touch of use at the corners, otherwise truly spectacular. Forester's only mystery. The best copy we've seen in 20 years & perhaps the nicest copy available anywhere as this title usually turns up in poor shape because publisher Saunders' wartime production made use of rather cheap materials that had very little staying power.         The Razor's Edge

London: William Heinemann. 1944. First. First English edition, preceded by the American edition. Slight bump on one corner, a few spots of foxing, and a small, very faint smudging on the front board, else fine in fine dustwrapper with none of the usual spine fading, and just a touch of soiling. A nice copy of a very poorly manufactured volume, and a book that despite originally receiving a mixed critical reception has been established as a classic. Probably the author's most popular work, in no small part because of its appeal to later generations who felt spiritually bankrupted by traditional Western lifestyles. Filmed by Edmund Goulding in 1946 with Tyrone Power, Gene Tierney, John Payne, Clifton Webb, and Anne Baxter (who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar). It was remade by John Byrum in 1984 with Bill Murray and Teresa Russell. Burgess 99. .

Deadline" in Astounding Science Fiction: March 1944, Vol. XXXIII, No. 1

New York: Street & Smith Publications, 1944. Vol. XXXII, No. 1. 178 pages. Wraps. First edition, first printing. Good condition. Clean pages, toned with age. Wear at extremities (especially at foot and bottom corner). Table of contents page torn, missing top fifth or so of page. Tear in pg. 35. Wear spot on back cover. The extremely rare issue of the magazine Astounding Science Fiction that contained the story "Deadline" by Cleve Cartmill. Although set on another planet, it apparently describes isotope separation and a weapon similar to the (then) top-secret atomic bomb, causing an uproar within the highest levels of the American government. Military Intelligence enlisted Cartmill's mailman as a confidential informant. The FBI investigated the author as well, commanding him to not write about such matters, and the magazine's editor (John Campbell) and other authors connected to the magazine such as Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein. Rumor has it that many copies of the magazine were bought up by the government and destroyed to preserve the intense secrecy of the Manhattan Project. Whether or not that rumor is true, today it is quite scarce.

Free World Theatre: Nineteen New Radio Plays

Random House, New York 1944 - First edition. Introduction by Thomas Mann. Preface by Arch Oboler. Fine in attractive, very good plus dustwrapper with slight wear at the crown and some modest rubbing. A radio and screen writers collaboration of radio plays promoting freedom and democracy, offered royalty free for non-commercial broadcast. Among the collaborators were the editors, Budd Schulberg, Pearl Buck, Jerome Lawrence, Ira Gershwin, and Samson Raphaelson. This copy Inscribed by Oboler to Rex Stout: "With best wishes to Rex Stout, fighter for freedom. Arch Oboler." Oboler was one of the great innovators of the golden age of radio drama, specializing in horror and suspense plays, perhaps best known for the popular series *Lights Out* and *Arch Oboler's Plays*. Oboler was later called to Hollywood, where he wrote and/or directed several films including the first "3-D" film *Bwana Devil*, the first film about post-nuclear survivors, *Five* (1951), and an early film about multiple personalities, *Bewitched*.         Catalog Design: New Patterns In Product Information.

New York: Sweet's Catalog Service/F.W. Dodge Corporation, 1944 - First edition. Hardcover w/wire spiral-binding of paper-covered boards. Yellow vellum endsheets. Very Good condition/-. No dust jacket, as issued. The top layer paper of the front cover is split between the lower 3" of the spiral binding (but the board itself is intact), and there is minor wear along the bottom edges of the front and back cover, with the lower right front corner worn. The front cover is unusually clean for this title, and the wire spiral is undamaged and free of any catches. Highly influential little publication by a brilliant international partnership--a Danish architect and a Czech designer working for an American publisher--that succinctly pioneered the organization of complex information(i.e., "information design") and displayed how modernism in graphic design could communicate effectively. Originally developed to improve legibility among the vast myriad of individual product catalogs that make up the mammoth Sweet's Catalog--a cornerstone of most architectural, construction, and product design offices of the 20th century, it was distributed to Sweet's contributor/clients, for their designers use. Author/Educator Stephen Heller has called this book and its two successors by the same authors, "the Holy Grails of information design", and credits its influence in how today's websites have evolved. Example: the text and its guideline layouts promote the use of "spread graphics" (two-page spread designs), something quite common today but almost unheard of at the time this appeared. Organized into three sections: Design Standards, Design Elements, and Design Patterns. Easily the finest copy of this fragile landmark publication we have seen. Unpaginated (approx. 70 pages). Protected with a clear archival cover. Please Note: A book of this value will require extra shipping charges for insurance, and will be quoted upon ordering for prior approval.         Theory of Games and Economic Behavior

Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1944. First edition, first printing. The copy of distinguished mathematician Andrew M. Gleason who (together with Montgomery and Zippin) resolved Hilbert’s Fifth Problem; a problem to which Von Neumann also greatly contributed. Gleason’s theorem of mathematical physics plays a fundamental role in quantum mechanics and in particular in hidden variable theories. A fine copy of Von Neumann and Morgenstern's groundbreaking text that created the interdisciplinary research field of game theory. “Quantitative mathematical models for games as poker or bridge at one time appeared impossible, since games like these involve free choices by the players at each move, and each move reacts to moves of other players. However, in the 1920s John von Neumann single-handedly invented game theory, introducing the general mathematical concept of ‘strategy’ in a paper on games of chance [Zur Theorie der Gesellschaftsspiele, Math. Ann. 100, 1928]. This contained the proof of his ‘minimax’ theorem that says ‘a strategy exists that guarantees, for each player, a maximum payoff assuming that the adversary acts so as to minimize that payoff.’ The ‘minimax’ principle, a key component of the game-playing computer programs developed in the 1950s and 1960s by Samuel, Newell, Simon, and others, was more fully articulated and explored in ‘The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior’, co-authored by von Neumann and the Austrian economist Oskar Morgenstern. Game theory, which draws upon mathematical logic, set theory and functional analysis, attempts to describe in mathematical terms the decision-making strategies used in games and other competitive situations. … Von Neumann revolutionized mathematical economics. Had he not suffered an early death from cancer in 1957, he most probably would have received the Noble Prize in economics. Several mathematical economists influenced by von Neumann’s ideas [as Nash, Harsanyi and Selten] later received the Nobel Prize in Economics”. (Hook & Norman: Origins of Cyberspace, p.473). OOC 953 [lacking jacket]; Norman 2167. Provenance: With the stamp of the distinguished American mathematician Andrew Mattei Gleason (1921-2008) famous for contributions in solving Hilbert's Fifth Problem and Gleason's theorem. "Gleason won the Newcomb Cleveland Prize from the American Association for the Advancement of Science [in 1952] for his contribution to the solution of the problem. It was, as was stated when the prize was presented to him ‘... an outstanding contribution to science’.” (MacTutor History of Mathematics). He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1956, to the National Academy of Science in 1966, and to the American Philosophical Society in 1977. Gleason's solution to Hilbert's problem [the question of whether all continuous groups are automatically differential groups] partly built on the work by Von Neumann in this field, and in particular on Von Neumann’s important 1933 solution of the problem in the special case of compact groups. Gleason’s theorem, on the uniqueness of measures in quantum mechanics, plays a fundamental role in the analysis of quantum measurement, and was essential to the groundbreaking work done in the 1960’s by John Bell on hidden variable theories of quantum physics; also a problem which Von Neumann worked much on. 8vo: 234 x 155 mm. Original cloth without the rare dust jacket; binding tight and clean. Rubberstamp 'Andrew M. Gleason' to the front free end-paper XVIII, 625, (1) pp. Errata sheet loosely inserted, as issued. Completley clean and fresh throughout. A fine copy.
