A rare, original "Schutz-Pass" granting a Hungarian Jewish refugee protection and entry into Sweden, signed by Raoul Wallenberg

"Rare Partly-printed Document Signed with his mark as Secretary to the Swedish Legation at Budapest, 1 page, 8.25"" x 13.25"", Budapest, September 26, 1944, printed in blue and gold with text in German and Hungarian, a ""SHUTZ-PASS,"" or ""PROTECTION-PASS,"" essentially a visa allowing ""Frau Eugen Radvány,"" a Jewish native of Budapest entry into Sweden. Countersigned by Carl Ivan Danielsson (""Danielsson"") as head of the Swedish mission in Budapest. With purple ink stamp of the Swedish legation in Budapest at bottom center. Minor partial fold separations at top and left margins, as well as pinhole at center, do not affect text, light soiling, else very good condition. A rare document from Wallenberg's heroic efforts to save thousands of Hungarian Jews from certain extermination at Auschwitz-Birkenau. This ""Shutz-Pass,"" grants protection to a 49-year-old Budapest native, ""Frau Eugen Radvány"" (born ""Margarete Kern""), and allows her entry into Sweden by means of including her name on a ""collective passport"" (""Kollektivpass ""). The pass states that Radvány would continue under Swedish protection until her entry into that country. Due to the fact that Wallenberg issued thousands more of these passes than for which he had originally obtained permission, he chose to simply add a mark in the event the Hungarian or German authorities raised the issue. Luckily for Wallenberg and those lucky enough to hold these lifesaving documents, the documents' legitimacy were never questioned. Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg engaged in extraordinary efforts to save Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust. His heroic actions began in July 1944, when ?the Swedish Foreign Ministry, at the request of Jewish organizations, sent him on a rescue mission to Budapest, as an attaché to the Swedish Embassy. By this time, 476,000 Hungarian Jews had already been deported to extermination camps, and deportation had been ordered for Budapest Jewry. Wallenberg?s chief operation was the distribution of Swedish certificates of protection (?Wallenberg Passports? or Schutz-Pass), along with Schutzbrief (Letters of Protection), and requests of exemption addressed to the Külföldieket Ellenörzö Hatóság (National Central Authority Supervising Foreigners). Armed with such documents, Jews fell under the protection of Sweden, an officially neutral nation. ?When the Soviet army was closing in on Budapest and the other diplomats left the city, Wallenberg chose to remain there in order to protect ?his Jews? in any eventuality which might arise. He went to the Soviet headquarters in Debrecyn for that purpose; all trace was lost of him and he was never seen again alive"". (Encyclopedia Judaica)Although Wallenberg issued as many of these passes as he could, precious few survive today. A quite similar document recently sold at Kestenbaum & Company in New York for $13,530. (November 13, 2014, Lot 282) An exceptional document signed by one of the 20th-century?s greatest humanitarians."

First. Four typed letters Signed, dated Dec. 4, 1944 through Jan. 25, 1945, to Margaret Cuthbert, the Director of Women's Programs at NBC in New York, regarding his participation in NBC's Great Novels radio program. In the course of the correspondence Cuthbert arranged for Hilton to introduce "Pickwick" and Jane Eyre. But in the final letter Hilton declines, explaining, "When $100 was first offered I accepted... regarding the sum as a honorarium ... (my previous fee for a radio appearance... had been $1750). As, however, you now seem to think $100 is a little bit too much, it really does occur to me that $75 is a little bit too little." A nice little archive of correspondence. .

[Probably Big Sur, Ca.]. 1944.. Original watercolor on paper, 27.5 x 35cm, floated on mat, framed under glass, in shadow- box style. Fine. A vintage, highly characteristic watercolor from the period of Miller's residence in Big Sur, when he actively solicited financial assistance in exchange for his paintings to enable him to survive and continue writing (ref: AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL AND SUNDRY, etc etc). The dominant colors are orange, pink, green and white, with accents in red and black, within a black and green wash border. The painting depicts two human figures against a green field, within a white irregular "protective" oval on the left side, isolated against a larger orange and pink background, juxtaposed with a more hostile appearing form on the right within its own shell of jagged concentric ovals. Signed in full and dated in the lower right.

Juristischer Teil a) Bericht des vom Reichsjustizministerium entsandten juristischen Sachverständigen, Senatspräsident Dr. Ziegler. b) Vernehmungsprotokolle".
