Typed Letter Signed, 4to, The Aleutians, July 26, 1944

In our letter, Hammett writes about the poet, e.e. cummings. Hammett sent Prudence Whitfield, Pru, a book of e.e.. cummings' poetry and she had responded by asking Hammett's opinion of the poems. Hammett here responds by discussing the poet. "Some of Cummings I like very much; at other times he seems to me just childish, but, after all, he's a pretty good poet at his best and should be permitted to play little games with himself now and then. What I sent you the book for was the last poem in it, which really delights me…." He refers to "If Everything Happens that Can't Be Done." He comments that he can sometimes be heard "muttering, 'there's nothing as something as one,' or, 'forever was never till now'," which are lines from the poem. This poem was first published in cummings' ninth book of poems "1 x 1 Poems," published in 1944. It was no doubt this book that Hammett had sent Pru. He signs, "Much love, darling SDH." Prudence Whitfield, wife of Raoul Whitfield, a fellow "Black Mask" writer and one of Hammett's closest friends. Hammett and Prudence (Pru) shared a wealth of correspondence and had an intimate relationship. Hammett was a veteran of World War I where he contracted Spanish flu and tuberculosis. He subsequently pulled strings in order to join up during World War II after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Hammett spent most of the war in the Aleutian Islands, where he edited a popular Army newspaper "The Adakian," from 1944 to 1945.

        Carrie Chapman Catt. A Biography.

8vo. Original black cloth, gilt lettering to upper board and spine; pp. 495, frontispiece and illustrations; very good. Provenance: signed to front pastedown by Carrie Chapman Catt and Mary Gray Peck. From the library of George V. Denny, Jr. (1899-1959), broadcaster and host of ?America?s Town Meeting of the Air.? First edition. This is the biography of one of the most important figures in the Amerian women's suffrage movement. Carrie Chapman Catt (1859-1947) succeeded Susan B. Anthony as the head of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1900. She developed a two-prong campaign which came to be known as Mrs. Catt?s ?Winning Plan? and which sought passage of a federal suffrage amendment while continuing to push for winning suffrage for women on a state level. Her tact and statesmanship won over Woodrow Wilson and other influential politicians. She cleared the path for the 19th Amendment by leading the NAWSA in a campaign in 1917 to unseat four unsympathetic senators and her life?s work culminated in 1920 with the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment giving women the vote. According to NAW, ?To Mrs. Catt more than any other single figure beside Susan B. Anthony, American women owe their right to vote.? (NAW I, pp. 309-313. Wheeler, One Woman, One Vote, pp. 295- 315).

        The Acreage of the Heart.

Glasgow: William MacLellan, , 1944. Octavo. Original gilt lettered red cloth spine, white boards. With the dust jacket. Colour frontispiece by John Maxwell (repeated on dust jacket). Jacket torn at head of spine (with a little loss), closed-tear across back panel, boards dished. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed in Todd's neat hand in brown ink on the front free endpaper: "for Dunstan with love from Ruthven. 21: i (?): 1945"; and below this a holograph poem in two 6-line stanzas, beginning: "A moth caught in the electric flash/ of Europe's dynamos run out of hand". The recipient is almost certainly the American poet Dunstan Thompson (1918-1975), who served in the US Army during the war (Todd was a conscientious objector) and later settled in Britain; three of his poems are anthologised in Masquerade: Queer Poetry in America to the end of World War II. The line "The tall soldier wears the clothes they gave/ reach-me-downs, fitting for the grave" is surely a reference to Thompson's wartime appearance. The poem is apparently unpublished. An excellent association copy.

Eleanor Roosevelt on the Meaning of Civil Rights

Washington, D.C. 1944 - Typed Letter Signed, to "Harry," Washington, D.C., February 19, 1944. 2 pp., 6 1/4 x 9 1/4 in. On White House stationery. "Something has to happen to people's souls before they are going to give the rights of citizenship to all the people of our country, regardless of color or creed. That does not mean you have to ask them to dinner. It only means giving them the rights that go with citizenship." Complete Transcript February 19, 1944Dear Harry,I have never been, as you know, opposed to a year of universal service for all young people, boys and girls, nor do I object to a certain amount of military training in that year. I do not want it to be only military training because I consider that wasteful. I quite agree with you that a year of this type of contact would be good for your young people, but it would not solve the colored question because you would find them setting up separate projects just as they are doing in the Army today for colored and white. Something has to happen to people's souls before they are going to give the rights of citizenship to all the people of our country, regardless of color or creed. That does not mean you have to ask them to dinner. It only means giving them the rights that go with citizenship. The right to an equal opportunity for an education. The right to equal justice before the law. The right to obtain a job according to their ability to hold it.The right to participate in the government through the ballot. To change the subject-I have a plea from Margot Haas to help them think up ways of collecting money. I think Mrs. David Levy will help them and Mr. Baruch told Trude yesterday that he was waiting for you to see him again, so I am sure he will give something if you will go to see him again. I would try to get $5000. Evidently they have not been able to pay salaries and I imagine none of them have so much laid aside that this can go on long. Affectionately, [signed] Eleanor Roosevelt [handwritten]: Mrs. Levy practically agreed she would give them a monthly subscription as I do.Historical Background Eleanor Roosevelt was a staunch advocate for equal rights, whether women's rights, international human rights, or civil rights for African Americans. She began her social activism in the early twentieth century by working at the College Settlement in Manhattan's Lower East Side. There, Roosevelt taught physical education to the children of immigrants. It exposed her, and her future husband, to the plight of impoverished industrial workers, and helped open FDR to the possibilities of helping alleviate poverty and social problems. After FDR became President, Eleanor toured the nation, witnessing the effects of the Great Depression on rural areas, especially in African American communities. She then pressured the Subsistence Homestead Administration to allow African Americans into Arthurdale, a planned community designed to create economic self-sufficiency. Her efforts failed, but it highlighted the depths of institutional racism in the United States. Roosevelt lobbied for civil rights inside her husband's administration and to the general public via radio and print media. She fought against lynching and segregation, even resigning her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution when they barred black opera singer Marian Andersen from performing in Constitution Hall. Instead, Roosevelt arranged for Andersen to sing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and urged media outlets to promote the concert on television and radio. Here, she is addressing the lynchpin of civil rights: equal protection of the laws and equal opportunity in education and the marketplace. These things, she believes, are the responsibility of government, while changing peoples' minds would take a more significant effort. Her tone suggests some familiarity with "Harry," as she addresses him by first name and signs "Affectionately" instead of her usual, more formal letters to "Mr." or "M.         [An Archive of Eighteen Scripts and Related Documents for:] DUEL IN THE SUN

[Culver City: RKO, Vanguard Films and Selznick International, 1944. Eighteen items. Quarto and folio. Mimeographed and carbon typescript, printed on rectos only. Bradbound or stapled in stencil-printed and studio wrappers, or self-wrappers. A few pieces a bit used, occasional hand-soiling, a few wrappers snagged or detached at brads, otherwise about very good to near fine. A substantial archive of scripts and related items for the 1947 Selznick adaptation to the screen of Busch's 1944 novel, directed by King Vidor, starring Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotten, Gregory Peck, Lionel Barrymore, Lillian Gish, Butterfly McQueen and Harry Carey. The film won the award for the Best Overall Production at the Venice Film Festival. Present here are the following items: a) a 22pp treatment by Busch, undated; b) a 30pp. roster of "Physical Descriptions and Characterizations Compiled from the Novel," 14 December 1944; c) a 7pp. inventory list of "Costumes Compiled from Novel," 15 Dec. 1944; d) an RKO Estimating Script, co- written by Busch and Garrett, 24 July 1944, 134 leaves; e) a "Shooting Script," credited solely to Garrett, 20 December 1944, 149 leaves plus lettered inserts, part carbon typescript, part mimeo, with revises on salmon and yellow stock dated into the following year; f) an addenda of ca. 30 lettered and numbered leaves, with mimeographed text on rectos only of salmon and white stock, bradbound in mimeographed wrappers dated 9 October 1945, denoted "Legend [/] Prologue [/] Added Scenes & Retakes"; g) a separate draft, 60,16 leaves, carbon typescript, 4 January 1945, denoted copy #7, attributed to Garrett and Stephen Longstreet, bradbound in mimeographed wrappers, but to all appearances consisting solely of rewrites attributed to Longstreet; h) a "Final Shooting Script," 168 leaves plus many lettered inserts and revises on a rainbow of colored stocks dated into July, attributed solely to Garrett; i) a substantially different "Final Script," 12 January 1946, attributed solely to David O. Selznick, 208 leaves, a few pencil annotations; j) a Dialogue Continuity, 18 November 1946, foliated by reel format, with ms. annotation noting changes made in April 1947; k) a revised Cutting Continuity, foliated in reel format, 12 March 1947; l) a large format editing guide ca. 150 leaves, 12 May 1947, captioned "Foreign Inserts Marked"; l) a spirit duplicated typescript of a Dutch translation (a few leaves detached, torn or frayed); m) a spirit duplicated typescript of a Spanish version; n) Dialogue Cutting Continuity scripts for Trailers #2 & #3, 2pp. and 4pp., 29 May 1947; o) a 4pp. roster of "Censorship Cut," 31 July 1947; and finally p) a "Footage Schedule for All Domestic Release Prints," 10 May, 1947. The film had something of a bumpy development, with Ben Hecht doing some uncredited script doctoring, and several uncredited directors, including Josef von Sternberg, stepping in to help out. Many changes were required to accommodate the various protectors of public morality, and an analysis of the evolution of the film through the succession of these widely disparate scripts (from Busch's treatment and collaborative script through the mammoth 200 pager attributed to Selznick) would likely be informative. Though Busch was himself a productive screenwriter for three decades, with a dozen credited screenplays and uncredited work on others, his final screen credit for this film adaptation of his own novel consisted solely of "Suggested by a Novel by ...." One might assume the earliest draft here, co-written by him, might be closer to the novel than was the end product.

A rare artist book printed during the war, with commentary by Fargue on the state of Europe. André Villeboeuf (1893-1956). Painter and etcher was born in Paris. He studied under Léon Detroy and Jean-Paul Laurens at the Beaux-Arts, Paris, and made his debut at the Salon des Indépendants in 1921, and subsequently became a committee member of the Salon des Tuileries. He was also a member of the Société des Peintres-graveurs français. Aassociated with his friends André Dunoyer de Segonzac, Jean-Baptiste Boussingault, Luc-Albert Moreau, and Louis Valdo-Barbey. Members of this group often exhibited together. André Villeboeuf and Dunoyer de Segonzac collaborated with Édouard Vuillard on the book Cuisine in 1935; each artist contributed six original prints. Villeboeuf illustrated a handful of books with original etchings, including his Surrealist masterpiece Contes fantastiques, published in an edition of 240 copies. These extraordinary aquatints, bitten numerous times to achieve subtle variations of shade, take us on a phantasmagorical journey that owes much to the etchings of Goya, to whose art Villeboeuf was deeply attached.

Oeuvre originale

Collection of photographs from the Pacific theatre of the Second World War, many taken in Occupied Japan, including a series of unpublished shots of Nagasaki shortly after the arrival of American troops.

Pacific Theatre, including Japan and the Philippines: , 1944-5. Together with The Showboat, a USS North Carolina cruise book documenting the ship's wartime service; Pictorial Manual: Aircraft and Surfacecraft, issued by the US Naval Training Station in Columbus, Ohio; A Score and Three More, a United States Naval Academy class of 1940 twenty-year reunion book with Ned Garrett's ownership signature; and a 1944 silk map of the area around the Philippine Islands. 194 original photographs of which 84 are 8 x 10 (approximately 200 x 250 mm) and 100 are small format (95 x 115 mm), with 6 in other sizes. Some duplicates. Some with manuscript and printed annotations on the backs, a small number with annotations on the fronts. The photographs all very good, with just the occasional creased corner, spot, abrasion, or toning; the accompanying pieces all in very good condition. A fantastic collection of photographs documenting life in the Pacific fleet at the end of the Second World War, including the ruins of Nagasaki less than two months after the detonation of the atomic bomb. The owner of this collection, Ned Garrett, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1940 and spent 18 months aboard the USS North Carolina, serving during the battle of Guadalcanal before transferring to flight training in the US at the end of 1942. He served the remainder of the war as an anti-submarine aviator in the Caribbean and extended his naval aviation career into peacetime, becoming by 1960 the Aircraft Research Development Plans and Program Officer in the Bureau of Naval Weapons. Though it is possible that Ned took some of the photographs in this collection, he did not remain in the Pacific long enough to see many of the places depicted, and it is likely that the principal photographer was Hal Garret, who is credited on the backs of many of the photos of the Philippines and Japan. We have been unable to trace Hal in the historical record, but he was probably a near kinsman of Ned (who did not have a brother). It seems that Hal was taking photographs in an official capacity. The backs of some of the small format photos are printed "Official US Coast Guard Photograph"; in many cases he has been granted access to areas that would have been off-limits for ordinary seamen; and a few of the photos are professional aerial shots. Most tellingly, one of the small format photos depicts a young man in uniform taking a photograph of a ruined cityscape - this has been annotated by hand on the back with "Tokyo Dec. 10, 1945 'at work'", making it likely this is Hal himself, or perhaps his photo of a colleague. Hal's presence as a Coast Guard photographer at important moments of the Pacific campaign makes sense given the role that organisation played in the Second World War. Coast Guard coxswains, who were skilled at managing smaller ships and landing craft in the treacherous waters around coasts, served not only as trainers for Navy and Marine personnel but were themselves key figures during Allied landings in both theatres of war. "Incredibly, the Coast Guard fully manned more than 350 naval ships, including 76 LSTs (Landing Ship, Tank), 21 cargo and attack-cargo ships, 75 frigates, and 31 transports. In addition, the Coast Guard manned more than 800 cutters, nearly 300 ships for the Army, and thousands of amphibious-type assault craft. In the ships and craft of the amphibious forces, the Coast Guard discharged its most important role during the war - that is getting the men to the beaches and providing support" (Browning, The Coast Guard and the Pacific War, p. 1). The photographs in the collection include a variety of subjects, from ships and planes to landscapes, ruined cities, and portraits and group shots of servicemen. There is an image of soldiers in full combat gear being loaded into a landing vessel, a shot of shells being fired, and a group photo of sailors gathered at the stern of a boat for a prayer service and looking rather worse for wear, perhaps immediately after an engagement. Navy and Coast Guard planes appear in the images, including one intriguing picture of a hydroplane under repair in the water and a fantastic action shot of a small boat speeding through the waves. Two photos depict sailors in dress uniform boarding a landing craft, probably for shore leave. There is a portrait of two servicemen holding a recently caught shark, and one of a man holding a live chicken underneath a grounded plane. By far the most interesting, and numerous, are the images recording the Philippines and Japan shortly after the Americans landed. There are a few portraits of Filipino natives, including women in traditional clothing and children carrying water, and a number of photographs of the bombed-out shells of administrative buildings in Manila. Some Japanese photos depict what is probably Tokyo, including the port, where there are signs for shipping companies and merchants in both Japanese and English, as well as men selling souvenir trinkets near the ships. Sailors and officers are seen enjoying Tokyo street life, including riding in rickshaws. One of the most poignant photographs in the collection captures a young woman in despair, begging on the sidewalk with a sleeping child in her lap as passersby look on. As noted on the back of one of the large format photos, Hal sailed into Nagasaki harbour on 26 September aboard the USS-Cambria APA-36, a manned assault transport that was carrying the first occupation troops to the city. The earliest photographs of the ruined city had been taken on August 10, only one day after the bombing, by the Japanese military photographer Yosuke Yamahata, and the first Western journalists arrived in the first week of September. By the time that Hal arrived, the city, though still a ruin, had been swept clean of much of the horror of the immediate aftermath, and his photographs reflect aspects of life returning. Some people salvage things from the rubble and groups of civilians pass by - men with carts and bicycles and women with bundles and children. One traveler poses for a portrait in the ruined landscape, and in another picture a group of men sits atop a massive pile of soy beans removed from a building near the waterfront. The most affecting photograph depicts a pile of rubble and burned corpses. Other shots document general destruction across the landscape, including the wrecked train station, the Mitsubishi "midget submarine" yard at the harbour, and a shot from one of the hills with the Catholic Urakami Cathedral in the background. In addition to the photos described above, the collection contains a number of other interesting items. There are a few photographs from the US, some of a motorcade featuring a dignitary who may be General Eisenhower, and also a V2 rocket that was captured from German forces and displayed outdoors in Washington D.C. Ned's 20-year Annapolis reunion book (which contains his biography) is included, as well as the cruisebook for the ship he served on, the USS North Carolina, with a photograph of that battleship loosely inserted along with three others. There is also a 1944 silk map of the Philippines, probably Hal's, and a wonderful aircraft identification guide, a "restricted" publication issued by the US Naval Training Station in Columbus, Ohio. ------------ The owner of this collection, Ned Garrett, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1940 and spent 18 months aboard the North Carolina, serving during the battle of Guadalcanal before transferring to flight training in the US at the end of 1942. He served the remainder of the war as an anti-submarine aviator in the Caribbean and extended his naval career into peacetime, becoming by 1960 the Aircraft Research Development Plans and Program Officer in the Bureau of Naval Weapons. He later moved to Tehran as depot manager for the F-14 program and as Advisor Director of Engineering, where he developed a large aircraft and engine overhaul facility. The ship that Ned served on, the USS North Carolina, was the most powerful, and most highly decorated, US battleship of the Second World War, and was also the first to enter service during the lead-up to the conflict, having been laid down in October 1937 and commissioned in April 1941. "Armed with nine 16-inch/45 caliber guns in three turrets and twenty 5-inch/38 caliber guns in ten twin mounts" she was at the time "the world's greatest sea weapon", and her impressive appearance as she made trial runs along the new England coast earned her the nickname "The Showboat" (Battleship North Carolina Memorial history). In June 1942 she joined the Pacific Fleet, where she made impressive contributions to every major engagement of the campaign, including the Battle of Guadalcanal, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, the Gilbert and Marshall Islands Campaign, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and the Battle of Okinawa. In the final days of the conflict she fired on Tokyo, and later sent crew ashore for preliminary occupation duty, patrolling the coast until the 5th of September.

Original Hardcover with the very scarce original dustjacket (unclipped). Excellent condition of the Volume itself. The dustjacket with some staining. With the very important preface to the second edition in which Miles gives his opinion on the longevity of some of his own medical findings and his regret towards the tendency of his colleagues "to revert to less radical measures in the surgical treatment of the rectum". Extremely rare, rather scarce and very sought after publication ! William Ernest Miles (15 January 1869 - 24 September 1947) was an English surgeon known for the Miles' operation: an abdomino-perineal excision for rectal cancer. Sources differ as to whether Miles was born in Trinidad or in Uppingham, England. He received his medical education at St Bartholomew's Hospital, from where he graduated in 1891. At age 25, he became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Formerly, surgery for rectal cancer was by perineal excision, which was less efficient in removing neoplastic tissue but easier to perform and carried less risks for the patient. Miles studied the reasons for recurrence following perineal resection and showed that many cases involved the upwards spread of cancer. His approach was to combine surgery via the perineum with surgery from above the cancer via the abdomen, known as abdomino-perineal resection. Miles perfected this technique over a number of years from 1907,eventually achieving long term remissions and gaining the acceptance of other surgeons. Miles' operation became the gold standard for surgical treatment of rectal cancer. (Wikipedia)

London, Cassell. 1944, 1944. First edition. 8vo. Clean and bright in publisher's orange cloth, titled in black to the spine. In a scintillating dustwrapper depicting all the usual Rohmertropes: corpse, incense, and lashings of sinister orientalism. Some edgewear to the jacket, creasing and chipping to the spine ends, nevertheless most attractive. Foxing to flyleaf, otherwise clean bright. Gaston Max, spy, raconteur and master of disguise combats disreputable Nazi types in wartorn London. As an added incentive it is noted on the rear of the flyleaf that not only has Mr.Rohmer written a lot of books but he was 'suppressed by the Gestapo in 1936!'       [Tel Aviv]: Irgun Olej Merkaz Europa 1944 - 1st edition. Original paper wrappers, tall 12mo, 69 pages. 22 cm. In German. The first separate publication of a demand for Nazi reparations to the Jews. In July 1943, long before the war ended, Siegfried Moses coined the term "reparations" in relation to claims of Jewish citizens against the German state. He published an article on the restitution demands of Jews in the bulletin of the "Irgun Olej Merkaz Europa", Tel Aviv; they publish here those proposals as a separate work. For the first time, Moses proposed that a State can commit an injustice, for which it must then compensate the civilian population which suffered under that injustice. This legal opinion was later the basis for reparations by the Federal Republic of Germany. Siegfried Moses (1887-1974) was a German-Israeli lawyer and the first state comptroller Israel. After the Nazi seizure of power, he helped German Jews transfer assets to Palestine. From 1933 on he was also chairman of the Zionist Federation of Germany (ZVfD) and Vice President of the Reich Association of German Jews. In 1937 Moses himself fled to Palestine; then in 1941 he wrote (together with fellow German emigre Walter Schwarz) the text of the 1941 Palestinian Income Tax Act. In 1947 Moses was a member of the delegation of the Jewish Agency at the United Nations and in 1949, he became the first state comptroller Israel (Chief of Court) . In 1956-1957, he was also President of the "Council of Jews from Germany", the official association of Israelis of German origin. In 1955 he co-founded the Leo Baeck Institute, serving as its director, and was on the advisory board of the United Restitution Organization in Israel (Wikipedia, 2015) . SUBJECT(S) : Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) -- Reparations. World War, 1939-1945 -- Claims. Jews -- Europe. The leaves browned and some corners slightly chipped, in a modern file.Interesting addendum sheets to the Operation Neptune plan for the invasion of Normandy, the initial phase of the larger Battle for Normandy as planned out on Operation Overlord. The Overlord plan started to take shape in the spring of 1943 and throughout 1943 and early 1944, efforts to secure information on the disposition of enemy forces along the Atlantic Wall, guns, obstructions, and coastal defenses were slowly pieced together. This was one of the largest invasion forces ever assembled and everything needed careful military planning. The main Operation Overlord plan was constantly changing with addenda as new information became available. This piece has the name Mr. Kaplan at upper top right on the first page and the information in these sheets is more related to the American Sector in Western Normandy. Right up to the invasion day itself new information was becoming available. The complexities of Operation Overlord make it one of the greatest military strategy documents of the Modern Age."
