        o. T. [Flüchtlinge]. Oel auf Leinwand.

45 x 27 cm, Links unten monogr. u. dat. FM 1941.

        The Idiocy of Idealism.

152 S. OLwd. m. OSch. EA in engl. Sprache. Mit einer halbseitigen Widm. an Dr. Robert Eisler, dat. Oxford April 1941. Fleck a. Deckel. Kennedy, Anthony Ludovici, Maximilian A. Mugge, Maude D. Petre, Horace B. Samuel, Herman Scheffauer, G.T. The World Significance of the Russian Revolution. From 1892 in England, he encountered Nietzsche. The 18-volume Nietzsche translation was overseen by him from 1909 to 1913. With the start of the World War I. he returned to Germany, later Switzerland ... As his daughter married the bookseller Albi Rosenthal in Oxford, he went back in 1938: "Levy has for many years been the tireless apologist and interpreter of Nietzsche". (Zitat).

Autograph letter signed ("E. Waugh"). Combe Florey House, Combe Florey, Nr. Taunton, 11 Sept. (no year).

1941. 8vo. 1 p. To Hugh Heckstall-Smith: "Yes Spencer was my informant [...] His suicide, I now remember, was autumn 1941 at Hayling Island. I knew him only as a Marine but saw quite a lot of him. He was a keen officer but full of frustrated ambitions (I thought). As far as I know he was in no disciplinary trouble & his death came as a surprise to all in the Corps. I suspected him of Communist sympathies, perhaps quite wrongly [...]". Continuing, Waugh refers to J. F. Roxburgh, adding: "Did J. F. not appoint his own Masters? At Lancing they were chosen from the most suitable of the assistant Masters. J. F. never had any sexual or romantic interest in me [...] Looking back I see J. F. as a show-man in the best sense. Great style, but a dangerous model for the young. I hear his trusty tones in many voices [...]". - Waugh drew on Heckstall-Smith's autobiography "Doubtful Schoolmaster" for his biography "Roxburgh of Stowe". - Content letters of the author of "Brideshead Revisited" are quite scarce. - On headed paper; minor rust stains and staple holes at top left corner, otherwise in very good condition.

        Gedichte

The War Speeches - full set of seven first editions finely bound in full red morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe - Into Battle, The Unrelenting Struggle, The End of the Beginning, Onwards to Victory, The Dawn of Liberation, Victory, Secret Session Speeches

London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1941-1946. First edition, first printing. Full leather. This is a spectacular, full, seven-volume set of first editions of Winston Churchill?s War Speeches volumes ? Into Battle, The Unrelenting Struggle, The End of the Beginning, Onwards to Victory, The Dawn of Liberation, Victory, and Secret Session Speeches. Each volume is bound in full red morocco goatskin by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The elegant bindings feature hubbed and gilt ruled spines, each bearing the title and author. There are gilt rule borders on the covers, gilt rules on the binding edges, gilt page edges, and gilt ruled turn-ins framing striking, marbled endpapers. Even the gold, red, and black head and foot bands are executed with noteworthy skill and aesthetic effect. ?Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London, England? is gilt-stamped on each lower front pastedown. This venerable firm, founded by Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe in 1901, became recognized as one of the leading bookbinders in London. Like Churchill himself, Sangorski & Sutcliffe endured the First World War, the Great Depression, the Second World War, and post-war austerity. This truly gorgeous example of the fine binder?s craft is a reminder to collectors that not all fine bindings are created equal. Condition of the bindings is better than near fine ? square, tight, clean, bright, and supple with just a few trivial scuffs but no appreciable wear. The British first edition, first printing contents are well-suited to the bindings, notably crisp and bright with almost none of the spotting endemic to this edition and no previous ownership marks. Into Battle is not only first printing, but first state (denoted by pagination missing at pages 78 & 294). The Unrelenting Struggle is also first state (denoted by incorrect spacing of the page numbers at page 281) and Victory is likewise first state, with page 177 mis-paginated. During his long public life, Winston Churchill played many roles worthy of historical note - Member of Parliament for more than half a century, distinguished soldier and war correspondent, author of scores of books, ardent social reformer, combative cold warrior, Nobel Prize winner, painter. But Churchill's enduring preeminence owes most to his indispensible leadership during the Second World War, when his soaring and defiant oratory sustained his countrymen and inspired the free world. Of Churchill, Edward R. Murrow said: "He mobilized the English language and sent it into battle." Between 1941 and 1946, Churchill's war speeches were published in seven individual volumes. The British first editions are visually striking, but were printed on cheap wartime paper, bound in coarse cloth, and wrapped in bright, fragile dust jackets. They proved highly susceptible to spotting, soiling, and fading, so the passage of time has been hard on most surviving first editions. Here is a spectacular alternative to original bindings executed by one of the world?s preeminent bookbinders. Please anticipate that this set may require additional postage. Reynaldo Luza (1893-1978), pre-eminent fashion artist, was born in Lima, Peru. He began training as an architect at the University of Louvain, Belgium, but returned to Peru at the outbreak of World War I, where he changed his studies from architecture to art. In 1918 he came to the United States, where he earned his living by contributing drawings to several fashion publications, principally VOGUE, HARPERS BAZAAR, and VANITY FAIR. In 1921 he joined HARPERS BAZAAR as the principal fashion artist, a position he was to hold for 27 years. In 1940 Luza made New York his principal base, where, over the next few years, he continued his activities at Harpers as well as creating fabric and furniture designs, and the costumes for the movie "The Bridge of San Luis Rey". Among other distinctions, he received several honorary appointments from the government of Peru, including that of Artistic Director of the Paris Exposition of 1938 and the New York World's Fair of 1939-40; he also did the interior design of the new Lima airport. In 1950 Luza returned to Peru, where he began a second career as a portrait painter, exhibiting his work over the next few years in Paris, New York, and Washington, D.C. This portrait is an early one, done on the artist's return from Europe.

        The Vulgar Streak.

London: Robert Hale Limited,, 1941. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine in silver. With the dust jacket. Spine rolled, extremities lightly worn, small diagonal crease to head of spine. An excellent copy in a jacket with a toned spine panel and a few minor nicks and marks. First edition, first impression, a scarce Wyndham Lewis title, due to wartime paper shortage but also possibly as a direct result of the Blitz. The second theory has been "questioned on several occasions, but in light of the fact that Hale's offices were indeed blitzed during the war, destroying the firm's publishing records, and that [The Vulgar Streak] was reprinted within one month, it seems plausible that stock in storage might have been affected as well" (Morrow and Lafourcade, p. 91).

Let Us Now Praise Famous Men

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1941. First edition. Near Fine/Very Good +. A Near Fine copy on account of a faint red smudge to the closed page block, not affecting the inner sheets, otherwise in excellent condition. In a Very Good+ dust jacket that is faded along the spine, as usual, and with slight wear at the extremities, but no real chips or tears. "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men" is the surprisingly striking product of a Fortune Magazine collaboration between photographer, Walker Evans, and writer, James Agee, in 1936. For four weeks they lived, worked alongside, and earned the trust of desolately impoverished sharecropping families in Alabama. Originally envisioned as a short article on sharecroppers in the Deep South amidst the reforms of President Roosevelt's "New Deal," Agee and Walker expanded the work considerably. Emotionally driven by the poverty they experienced, Agee and Walker crafted a fictionalized account of three families incorporating Evans' powerful images. Despite a lukewarm initial reception, "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men" was brought to national attention by the social justice movements of the 1960s and has remained an important work of southern literature and an innovative collaborative work. Near Fine in Very Good + dust jacket.

        Concierto del Sur manuscript

1941 - PONCE, Manuel. Concierto del Sur full score manuscript. [Uruguay, circa 1941]. Folio, unbound; pp. 20. $3800.Autograph manuscript by Segovia of the opening section of Ponce's Concierto del Sur, commissioned by Segovia.Largely self-taught, Segovia was faced early in his musical career with a general disbelief in the seriousness of classical guitar, a problem he felt was caused by a lack in quality of the available repertory. One response was to seek out pieces either originally written for the lute or capable of being arranged for guitar (he himself arranged works by Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, and Chopin, among others); the other path was to commission new works. Catelnuivo-Tedesco, Talla, Haug, Rodrigo, Torroba, Turina and Villa-Lobos all wrote works for Segovia, but it was with Manuel Ponce, the most important Mexican composer of the 20th century, that he developed the most enduring relationship. Ponce's best-known work and one of Segovia's signature pieces, Concierto del Sur was commissioned by Segovia in 1941 while he was living in Montevideo, Uruguay. Ponce would send sections of the work to Segovia, who would play them and then send back suggested changes to Ponce. This copy of the full score differs substantially from the extant manuscript in Ponce's hand, suggesting the degree to which Segovia had a hand in shaping the piece. First performed in Montevideo in 1941 on Ponce's Latin American tour-with Ponce conducting and Segovia playing guitar""Concierto del Sur was not finally published until 1970. This manuscript for the full orchestra for the first section (marked "Allegro" by Segovia at the top of the first page), written in black ink on 11 staves per page, is for most of the first movement, without the ending. Segovia's writing is clean and elegant, exceptionally readable. An important piece in fine condition.

        GERMANY MUST PERISH!

Newark, N. J. ; Argyle Press 1941 - Original Wrappers. 8vo. 96 pages. 19 cm. Second edition. Map drawn by Kaufman, on inside back cover titled, "Map Showing Possible Dissection of Germany and Apportionment of Its Territory. " Second edition of "Germany Must Perish! " in illustrated wrappers with media pull quotes on the back cover from Time Magazine, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Philadelphia Record. After accusations by the Nazis that the book was partly responsible for the eviction of Jews in Hanover, Germany the book was reprinted and widely reviewed in the United States. Kaufman steadfastly defended his thesis against the doubt and fear regarding its impact. An interview with Kaufman from the September 26, 1941 Canadian Jewish Chronicle reads, "’My book, ’ he said, ‘is a voice of doom to the Germans. Can you imagine what they think when they read in their own language – and Germany Must Perish is translated into German, you know – that all Germans will be sterilized? Ha, they are afraid! That’s why they write about the book. It hit home. ’ [ ] ‘Jews must come out into the open and fight this evil. Do you know that I risked my life by signing my name to this book? But we cannot afford to compromise. Germany and Germanism need not have anti-Semistims for a scapegoat. The next Fuehrer won’t have anti-Semitism, as there won’t be enough Jews in Germany. But those Germans will find some sort of whipping boy, unless we lick Germany and eradicate her from the face of the earth. ’" Initially self-published and obscure, the anti-German book became a central strategic piece for infamous Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels. Goebbels referenced the book throughout World War II claiming it as proof of a Jewish threat to the Nazis, writing in "his diary August 3, [1941], ‘He really could not have done it better and more advantageously for us if he had written the book to order. I will have this book distributed in millions of copies in Germany, above all on the front, and will write a preface and afterword myself. It will be most instructive for every German man and for every German woman to see what would happen to the German people if, as in November 1918, a sign of weakness were given. ’" (Herf, page 112, "The Jewish Enemy") However this mass publication plan never came to fruition, because Goebbels "feared copyright problems. The U. S. Was still not in the war, and he worried that the U. S. Might retaliate by stripping German works in the U. S. Of copyright protection. " (Bytwerk, 2012) Instead, edited and editorialized selections of the book were published in the widely circulated Nazi pamphlet DAS KRIEGSZIEL DER WELTPLUTOKRATIE alongside claims "that Kaufman was a close associate of Franklin D.         Souvenir Program. Special Meeting in honor of Rockwell Kent, Member of Lincoln Steffens Lodge 500, I.W.O. to Celebrate His Election as Vice President of the International Workers Order and the Publication of his Autobiography "This Is My Own." [Signed]

[New York 1941 - Souvenir program from an event celebrating Kent's election as Vice President of the International Workers Order (I.W.O.), held at Lodge 500 Headquarters in New York on January 19, 1941. The I.W.O. was a Communist Party-affiliated insurance, mutual benefit, and fraternal organization active between 1930-1954; at its peak, during the years immediately following World War II, the organization had nearly 200,000 members. The event doubled as a forum for celebrating the publication of Kent's recently-published autobiography This Is My Own. Contents feature Kent's two-page introductory lecture, with the rear wrapper providing the order of events for the evening; fellow artist William Gropper acted as Master of Ceremonies, with performances by soprano Mildred Green and distinguished Chinese pianist Yao Tschin-Schin. A rare piece of Kentiana; we find no example for sale in the trade (July 2016), and 1 copy in OCLC (Frostburg State), this example similarly signed by the three principal figures associated with the event.
