Florence Farr, Bernard Shaw and W. B. Yeats.

Dublin: The Cuala Press,, 1941. Octavo. Original white cloth-backed blue boards, printed paper label to spine, title to front board black, blue endpapers, pages uncut. Vignette illustration to title page. Bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. Spine label a little tanned and chipped, boards faded around the edges, but a sound copy, internally clean and generally very good. Yeats" and also two pieces of Cuala ephemera: one Cuala Press advertisement for the Broadsides New Series, and a card reprinting from A Broadside "The Midland Toast: Long road and stoney ditches / And here's to nice girls / And to hell with riches" beneath a coloured woodcut by Jack Yeats. This publication is a collection of letters from Shaw and Yeats to Florence Farr (1860-1917), a London-based actress of great beauty and dynamism. She was deeply involved with both Yeats and Bernard Shaw, both theatrically (acting in plays written by them, often specifically for her) and romantically (more with Shaw than Yeats, for whom she was more muse than lover).

Signed leaf from Wembley Visitors Book, England vs. Scotland Footbal Match. Saturday, October 4th, 1941.

1941 1941 - Single leaf from a visitors book, signed by the aforementioned listed dignitaries in attendence, each with their name typed in red to the right of the respective autograph. A title caption is typed in black at the foot. In a common window mount, attractively paired with a copy of the title/cover from the guest book. An unique item, ready for framing. The annual 'British Home Championship', being the world's oldest international football tournament, was abandoned during the wartime hostilities, so this document relates to a 'friendly' match, contested by the fiercest of rival teams, featuring the likes of Stanley Matthews (England) and Bill Shankly (Scotland). England won the game 2-0. Guest of Honour was HM King George of Greece, who was exiled to London from occupied Greece, accompanied by Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Mrs Clementine Churchill, Deputy Prime Minister Clement Attlee, Home Secretary Herbert Morrison, Admiral of the Fleet Sir Dudley Pound, Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Charles Portal and Chief of the Imperial General Staff Field Marshal Sir John Dill, who is noted as playing a significant role in the formation of the "Special Relationship" between Great Britain and the United States, but who was poorly regarded by Churchill. This is a most important set of autographs, comprising Britain's three most senior politicians at this stage of the war, together with the professional heads of the three armed forces.         Beating the Invader. A message from the Prime Minister.

London: Issued by the Ministry of Information in co-operation with the War Office and the Ministry of Home Security,, 1941. Quarto single-sheet flyer (280 × 210 mm), text both sides. Glazed both sides and framed. First edition, first issue, Woods noting a later version with red overprinting. "If the invasion comes everyone - young or old, men and women - will be eager to play their part worthily ? When the attack begins, it will be too late to go ? for all of you then the order and the duty will be: 'STAND FIRM' ? where there is no fighting going on and no close cannon fire or rifle fire can be heard, everyone will govern his conduct by the second great order and duty, namely 'CARRY ON'." Churchill's inspirational message is followed by detailed instructions on just how to stand firm and carry on. Print-run details show that over 14 million copies were printed; "The huge print run might leave one with the impression that the leaflet would be commonly found today. It was, however, only a leaflet anticipating an event that never came to pass. In the event very few copies have survived" (Cohen).

Excellent collage cartoon portrait in colour, signed by Rockwell (Norman, 1894-1978, American Artist and Illustrator)

1941 - and inscribed "Faithfully yours" below Rockwell's drawing in the space left by the cartoonist of one of the dogs for which Rockwell was famous, someone has tied a tin can to the dog's tail, the string winding round Rockwell's signature, and showing Rockwell full length, full face, his hand resting on the top of the drawing, his jacket, trousers, suede shoes and enormous bow tie all cleverly picked out in real cloth, laid down on the back of the mount is an excellent newspaper obituary of Rockwell, showing him at work, the cartoon 10" x 7¾" on mount 15½" x 11¾", no place, Rockwell was famous for his world of small town American life and the covers he drew for the Saturday Evening Post. The dog is probably his own dog, Butch, who appeared in many of the artist's illustrations in the 1940s and 1950s. The dog was even present in one of Rockwell's most important series of four drawings, Four Seasons (1948). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Two original pencil, charcoal and wash drawings of Auxiliary Firemen, both signed "Betts '41". [Together with:] BETTS, Ben. Heroes with Grimy Faces: authentic cartoons of life in the Fire Service and the lighter side of the "Blitz". London: C. Arthur Pearson, Ltd. [c. 1941]. Landscape octavo, pp. 31. Original red printed wrappers, stapled as issued. Illustrated throughout with cartoons. Loose in wrappers otherwise a very good copy.

London: 1941 - Image sizes: "Dr Livingstone" 580 x 450 mm (framed & glazed 730 x 590 mm); "And to think" 555 x 402 mm (framed & glazed 720 x 540 mm). Both in excellent condition. A fine eye-witness record of the heroism of the Auxiliary Fire Service during the London Blitz: a pair of very accomplished original drawings by the cartoonist Ben Betts - executed with an incisive and confident line - the larger of the two titled on verso "Dr Livingstone I presume" and showing two Auxiliary Firemen meeting amidst a fantastic tangle of steel girders; the other entitled "And to think that this time last year I was sitting beside a nice warm fire at home", with two kneeling firemen, surrounded by smoke and flame, manning a fire hose and dousing a fireplace inside a burning building. Ben Betts had worked for both the Daily Mirror and on the sports pages of the Daily Express before the war. He was stationed at U86 Tranmere Road, Earlsfield, in south west London, and is mentioned in the BBC online archive entitled "WW2 People's War". "The home-front battle took its toll on civilians: in the 1940-41 Blitz alone, 300,000 London homes were destroyed and at least 20,000 London civilians were killed; of those more than 1,000 were fire-fighters. Working amidst the destruction, firemen became the indomitable 'Heroes with Grimy Faces' praised by Churchill on the wireless and then honoured by Humphrey Jennings on screen in the 1943 film Fires Were Started, which cast real firemen in every role. Firemen led the way in the People's War, working longer, more gruelling hours than most to defend their burning London homes from the attacks of the German Luftwaffe" (Kristine A. Miller, British Literature of the Blitz: Fighting the People's War, 2009, p. 96). Provenance: each inscribed on verso by the original owner, L. R. Chambers: "This original cartoon by Betts was done in 1941 during the London 'blitz' while Betts was in the Auxiliary Fire Service. It was part of a collection shown at the Royal Academy in 1941 and then sent round the Commonwealth and America by the Ministry of Information to whom I loaned it for that purpose - and eventually returned to me after the war. The frame is the original piece of 'war-time' work". This was the first of four wartime exhibitions of work by Firemen Artists at the Royal Academy and included pictures by Leonard Rosoman, Bernard Hailstone, Paul Dessau, Norman Hepple and Robert Coram, who all served in the fire service. The book is scarce: Copac locates only two copies in British and Irish institutional libraries (IWM, Oxford); OCLC adds a further copy at the National Library of Scotland.

Second World War photo album compiled by American Red Cross worker Elizabeth Ridley

1941 1941 - Second World War photo album compiled by American Red Cross worker Elizabeth Ridley, with three wartime Naval yearbooks & souvenir books owned by her sister Christine, a naval air mechanic in the WAVES programme. Oblong folio (340 x 260 mm). 1941-45. Contemporary dark blue skiver elaborately embossed in grey with military motifs including an American Eagle, planes, tank, battleship, artillery, and blimp. Bound with black nylon ties that may not be original. 80 black paper pages containing 219 photographs attached with photo corners. The photos range in size, with the majority measuring 90 x 60 mm, and the largest 255 x 200 mm. A few items, including some photos, a small colour Kodachrome, several negatives, and an unused Anchor Line trunk label are loosely inserted. Elizabeth has written her name and address on the front free endpaper and annotated many of the photos with white ink. The naval books owned by Christine Ridley include We Keep 'Em Flying: A Visit to the Naval Air Technical Training Centre, Memphis Tennessee; Navy Log, a yearbook from the same centre, and Tattoo: United States Naval Air Station, Atlanta, Georgia. Loosely inserted in the Navy Log yearbook is a certificate showing that Christine passed the training to become an aviation machinist mate in October 1943. Loosely inserted in Tattoo is the certificate she received upon becoming an aviation machinist's mate second class in June 1944. Just a little rubbing and toning at the extremities, very good condition. Boards separated and reattached with cellotape, some rubbing and wear at the extremities. The leaves are brittle and exhibit cracking and chipping at the edges. Good condition. An evocative Second World War photo album and group of naval publications representing life on the American home front for Red Cross worker Elizabeth Ridley (1912-2004) and her sister Christine Ridley (b. 1920), a naval air mechanic. The sisters were originally from New Jersey, but moved throughout the US as part of their wartime work and would later settle in Washington D. C. Elizabeth's pre-war career is unknown, but after the war she continued to work for the Red Cross in Riverton, New Jersey, and in later life was employed at the Library of Congress. Christine was originally a teacher before joining the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES - officially the Naval Women's Reserve), which began operating in 1942. Her preliminary training as a naval aviation mechanic was undertaken at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Memphis, Tennessee, followed by advanced training for Petty Officer Second Class in Atlanta Georgia. Elizabeth's album compiles several years worth of photographs beginning in 1941, presenting a wonderful cross-section of American life during the War. The pages are filled with both formal and informal snaps of friends and family, the many individuals in military uniform evoking the War's long reach into ordinary Americans' lives. Included are numerous pictures of Elizabeth and her colleagues in their Red Cross uniforms, two large and particularly nice shots of a Red Cross office with booster posters on the walls, and an image of Red Cross workers marching in a parade. There are also numerous photos of Christine in her naval uniform, two taken outside a Naval training office. Despite the troubled times most of the images are light-hearted and depict family reunions, days out, and travel, including trips to Florida; Texas (with shots of the Alamo and one of a bomber approaching Kelly Field); Gulfport, Mississippi; the beach at Hampton Bays, New York (with a series of shots of the sisters and their friends in bathing costumes and also bicycling down a country road); the Rochester Yacht Club; Washington D.C., and other unnamed locations. Overall this collection is a deeply personal and compelling look at life for two American women participating in the mass mobilization of American society during the Second World War.         "Alcoholics Anonymous: Freed Slaves of Drink, Now They Free Others " In The Saturday Evening Post

Philadelphia: Saturday Evening Post, 1941. Volume 213, Number 35. With photo illustrations; cover illustration by Norman Rockwell. 9-11, 89-92 pp. 4to. Original pictorial wrappers. Small 1/4" chip on upper left front cover, tiny tear to lower edge of back cover and last few pages, no mailing label, an excellent copy. Volume 213, Number 35. With photo illustrations; cover illustration by Norman Rockwell. 9-11, 89-92 pp. 4to. A major turning point for Alcoholics Anonymous. A clean, crisp copy of the Saturday Evening Post featuring the article on Alcoholics Anonymous that brought the organization to national prominence and which is acknowledged by A.A. to be a major turning point in the history of the group. The article was written by Jack Alexander six years after the founding of the group and two years after the publication of the "Big Book," A.A.'s central text. Alexander received the active encouragement and collaboration of A.A. co-founder Bill Wilson, who had been seeking ways to broadcast the group's message to a wider audience, and who took Alexander to meet scores of A.A. group members throughout the midwest and east coast, shared organizational files, and brought him to several sites of A.A. significance. The resulting article was sympathetic to the group's aims and laudatory of its achievements--Alexander notes that the "movement ... in the past six years has brought recover to around 2000 men and women, a large percentage of whom had been considered medically hopeless"--and gave a nuanced portrayal of A.A.'s members, methods and philosophy. Alexander describes a visit to a hospitalized drunk by three recovered members of the group; the impressed reactions and endorsements of the medical community; history of the group's founding; anecdotes of drinking and recovery; etc. It is also illustrated with a series of photos, of an early A.A. meeting among other subjects. The article had an extraordinary effect; A.A. headquarters received nearly a thousand written inquiries in the first two weeks after its appearance, and a bulletin in the March 26, 1941 issue of the post noted: "Following the publication of 'Alcoholics Anonymous' by Jack Alexander, the Post floor received an unusually large mail from readers, much of it asking how contact could be established with groups who are doing this work in various cities. There were several instances of calls on our branch offices for information on local organizations of this unusual group." A second printing of the Big Book was initiated to meet the sudden interest. The article is credited by A.A. for bringing the organization to national prominence, and for galvanizing the movement at a crucial moment in its infancy. A.A. World Services to this day publishes the article in pamphlet form and sells an estimated 22,000 copies a year.
