Miami and Suburbs (Central city area). Maps 1 - 5 from Plat Book of Greater Miami Florida and Suburbs.

Philadelphia. G.M. Hopkins Co. Copyright 1935. [1936 or 1941. 5 maps, handcolored, each sheet size 24 x 36 inches with centrefold as issued. Damp stain to lower margins of all maps; scarcely noticeable except for sheet 1 where it is visible mostly at the lower areas of the left and right edges. Tab attached to each map as issued. Five plat maps from G.M. Hopkins "Plat Book of Greater Miami Florida and Suburbs," maps numbered 1 through 5 showing the central business and civic area of Miami. Some maps feature paste-on revisions/up-dates regarding land use. Sheets 1, 2, 3 are scaled 100 feet to 1 inch. Sheets 4 and 5 are scaled 150 feet to one inch. From South to North the alignment is as follows: sheets 4, 1, 2, 5. From West to East the alignment is as follows: sheets 3 and 1. The southern-most border (see sheet 4) is Southwest 11th which extends west to Southwest 4th and east to Biscayne Bay. The northern-most border (see sheet 5) is Northwest 18th which extends west to Northwest 3rd and east to Biscayne Bay. From West to East (see sheets 3 and 1) the western-most border is Southwest 7th; the southern-most border is Southwest 3rd on map 3 and Southeast 2nd and the Florida East Coast Railway (Royal Palm Hotel Spur) on map 1. The northern-most border is Northwest 3rd on map 3 and Northeast 4th on map 1. These maps are a fascinating look into Miami's past. Most noticeably in map 1, but to some extent with all these maps of the central area of Miami, businesses and civic buildings are extensively marked and Map 1 represents a vital city centre so different from the current time. Amendments have been glued over sections eg. a Walgreen's has been added at the corner of SE Second Avenue and E. Flagler; two new buildings have been added to an empty block between SE First and Second at Bicayne Boulevard.

        A Collection of Correspondence.

1941,1944,1946,1950. Four letters on varying letterheads (The Admiralty, South East Asia Command Headquarters etc.) From Admiral Lord Mountbatten to novelist and historian C.S. Forester thnking him for various books sent, commenting on the undesirability of a Mountbatten biography (no matter who wrote it) and correcting many of Forester's naval terms, slang, ranks etc. It appears from the length and enthusiasm of the correspondance that Mountbatten had a tremendous respect and liking for Forester and admired his work greatly. Also present are two pieces of correspondance from Robert Lusty of Michael Joseph Publishers recounting the acknowledgement of a package of Forester books by Winston Churchill.

        ???????? Picture-Story Show: Ikky?-san...

Tokyo: Shink?-sha ???, Showa 16. [1941]. Scarce Japanese kamishibai (paper theatre) stage, glass screen and complete set of 14 cards. Kamishibai frame illustrated by Koide Shin'ichi ????. Text and illustrations of the Ikky?-san story by Kiyohara Takashi ?????. Paper and card theatre shows some insect damage and wear with a few occasional marks. First card a little creased, cards foxed and soiled in places. Kamishibai or Japanese paper theatre had its heyday in the first half of the 20th century before television sounded the beginning of its demise. Kamishibai men, or very occasionally women, were most commonly itinerate street story tellers who sold sweets to their eager audiences of children as a way of ekeing out a living. They had wooden stages which they usually transported around by bicycle. When they arrived at the place where they would give their performance they attracted the attention of local children by clapping two wooden sticks together. With an audience assembled they began by selling sweet and then told their story using the illustrated boards, slipping one in front of another in the grooves of the stage as the story progressed.Kamishibai was influenced by the culture in which it thrived, with cinema being a particularly strong influence. It covered all styles almost always with a strong moral tone. During the Second World War kamishibai was extensively used to send out a nationalist message. Stories were exciting! The kamishibai men often leaving the story mid-point on a cliff hanger, so the children would return the next day. Kamishibai may not be performed on street corners in Tokyo anymore but its influence lives on in the many manga artists who emerged from the kamishibai industry. The theme of this toy kamishibai is Ikky?-S?jun ???? [1394-1481] a Buddhist priest of Daitoku-ji Temple who is well known to Japanese audiences as an intelligent, witty, problem solver. Since childhood Ikky?-S?jun was regarded as a very talented and witty person and there are many anecdotes and stories which tell of his wit. There are three stories in this kamishibai set, Ikky?-san and his friend Chikusai feature in two of them and their master in a third. (Manga Kamishibai. The Art of the Japanese Paper Theater - Eric P. Nash. 2009). (When referring to this item please quote stockid 156599)....

Manuscrit et tapuscrit complet constituant la version primitive de Thomas l'obscur.

An exceptional complete set of 454 manuscript and typescript leaves with copious corrections and deletions, being an early version of Thomas l'Obscur, which sheds light on the process of the composition of the work based on the earlier typescript:  Thomas le Solitaire [Thomas the Solitary]. The document is made up of two states: a manuscript of 275 leaves, and a collection of 179 leaves composed of 132 leaves of the typescript (entirely corrected) of Thomas le Solitaire, and 47 inserted manuscript leaves. The 275-page manuscript finishes with a reference to the typescript-manuscript document, which itself has a double ending, for Thomas le Solitaire (typescript) and the end of Thomas l'Obscur (manuscript). It would appear that the typescript-manuscript is a first step in the work leading up to the manuscript proper, but together with it forms an inseparable whole since the references from one to the other are constant. The pages of the manuscript in fact regularly contain cross-references to the typescript-manuscript and the sequence of pages is interrupted several times to include the numbering of the typescript-manuscript.The manuscript version, as well as the typescript-manuscript version both show significant differences from the published version (which appeared in 1941). Some passages from the text of Thomas le Solitaire are still included in the manuscript and variances with the published novel are manifold.  This important document, therefore, marks a key moment in the work of the author, where the novel was still in full-blown development. This unique set undoubtedly constitutes the most important source of information on the development of the novels of one of the most closed-off writers of the 20th century after Kafka. 1938 13,5x21cm et 21x27cm 454 feuillets dont 322 manuscrits

Signed leaf from Wembley Visitors Book, England vs. Scotland Footbal Match. Saturday, October 4th, 1941.

1941. Single leaf from a visitors book, signed by the aforementioned listed dignitaries in attendence, each with their name typed in red to the right of the respective autograph. A title caption is typed in black at the foot. In a common window mount, attractively paired with a copy of the title/cover from the guest book. An unique item, ready for framing. The annual 'British Home Championship', being the world's oldest international football tournament, was abandoned during the wartime hostilities, so this document relates to a 'friendly' match, contested by the fiercest of rival teams, featuring the likes of Stanley Matthews (England) and Bill Shankly (Scotland). England won the game 2-0. Guest of Honour was HM King George of Greece, who was exiled to London from occupied Greece, accompanied by Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Mrs Clementine Churchill, Deputy Prime Minister Clement Attlee, Home Secretary Herbert Morrison, Admiral of the Fleet Sir Dudley Pound, Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Charles Portal and Chief of the Imperial General Staff Field Marshal Sir John Dill, who is noted as playing a significant role in the formation of the "Special Relationship" between Great Britain and the United States, but who was poorly regarded by Churchill. This is a most important set of autographs, comprising Britain's three most senior politicians at this stage of the war, together with the professional heads of the three armed forces.

Two typed letters signed, and one autograph postcard signed, to Lyn Lloyd Newman.

Washington, DC, and Firle, 1941-55 - Two folded type written letters, on headed note paper of The Mayflower, Washington, D. C. two pages and one page respectively, 20 and 12 lines, approximately 130 and 80 words, with autograph amendments, signed by J. M. Keynes. The postcard 3 lines long, approximately 15 words, signed by Lydia. Small ink blot to head of second letter, folded for mailing; in very good condition. Two letters written by Keynes to Lyn Lloyd Irvine, Journalist and Writer, husband of the Bletchley Park mathematician Max Newman, hoping to meet whilst in America, but noting "My visit to this country is meant to be as short as possible and, as I have come on a definite job, that is what I must attend to. In the main I shall be here in Washington. But I shall be spending some days in New York before we go back. So shall I let you know a little later on? If I can come to Princeton, all the better.". In the second letter he announces a planned visit to Princeton "to stop with Walter Stewart" but adds that Lydia will not be accompanying him: "If you really can face the journey to Washington, she says she would be more than delighted to see you here for lunch, almost any day in the near future, except the 27th and the 30th." The post card, written some 12 years later, has Lydia declining a meeting: "So sorry my dear, I am too far tucked away, and lazy. Love, Lydia Keynes". In 1941 Keynes was in Washington on the first of several important visits to America, making arrangements for Lend-Lease and explaining in detail Britain's financial predicament after two years of war.

Duell, Sloan and Pearce (1941), New York - An early Stegner novel, about a college student enamored with Communism and a young woman from a wealthy family, therein creating a conflict between heart and head. Colberg, Wallace Stegner: A Descriptive Bibliography A5, citing a print run of 2000 copies, with 515 sets of sheets pulped. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in a very good-looking dust jacket that appears to have been married to the book (based on a note written on the bookplate of the previous owner). The jacket is strengthened with tape on the back at the top and bottom edges. Signed by Stegner at an early date on the front free endpaper. In different ink, Wallace then added an inscription 'Postdated April 16, 1984', to the signature: 'For Maury Dunbar, who rescued it from oblivion.'         German soldier's photograph album depicting service with a Flak unit in occupied Norway.

Rhineland & Norway: 1938- 1941 - Quarto album (230 x 185 mm). Contemporary sheep-backed marbled boards, spine ruled in gilt. Occasional inked arrows indicating the compiler of the album in group photographs. A little rubbing and wear to board-edges and tips, photographs occasionally lifting slightly at edges, a very small number toned or slightly marked, a few tissue-guards loose, but excellent condition overall, the images overall very well preserved indeed, retaining their sharp tonal contrasts. 272 original photographs (various sizes, from approx. 60 x 45 to 80 x 130 mm, both gloss and matt, and mostly deckle- or wavy-edged) and 4 professional photographs or postcards (of which one full-page, depicting an 8.8 cm Flak gun), all mounted on 30 black thick card leaves with tissue guards, neatly captioned and dated throughout in white grease-pencil. A superbly presented album of original snapshots, compiled by a young member of an auxiliary Flak unit posted to Norway in May 1940 in the wake of the German invasion — "a daring, almost reckless, operation that took the [Allies] almost completely by surprise" (Bell, Churchill and Sea Power, p. 184). Operation Weserübung, as it was known, commenced on 9 April and was completed by 10 June. The soldier appears initially to have served in the Reichsarbeitsdienst, Abteilung 215, "W" company, from 4 April to 25 October 1938, before transferring in December to the Düsseldorf Flak-Kaserne, and then the Münsterlager training camp, with detachments to Stolpmünde (now Ustka, on the Polish coast) and several locations across north-west Germany in the months leading up to war. One leaf, dated 25 August 1939, is extravagantly titled "Krieg": this was the day that Hitler closed all telecommunications beyond borders and warned Mussolini that war with Poland was imminent, before receiving news of the Anglo-Polish Treaty. A sequence of posed troop photographs at Leverkusen precedes an unsurprising Phoney War lacuna; the next dated photographs depict the unit's mobilisation to Norway in early May 1940, and include engrossing images of German destroyers and logistical operations, one caption reading "Denn wir fahren gegen Engeland [sic]". On 12 May the soldier's unit arrived in occupied Oslo ("die Stadt mit dem grossen Herzen!"), reaching Sandvika on 21 May, and transferring a week later to Trondheim, the striking photographs including an array of views, German armour and anti-aircraft guns, bombed-out vehicles and bridges, downed Norwegian fighter planes, Norwegian prisoners, notably an inspection by General Nikolaus von Falkenhorst, ground commander of the invasion, in addition to photographs apparently from nearby Værnes, including an inspection by General Kitzinger at a Flak emplacement, and a possibly later series of landscapes and images of soldierly recreation (fighting was by this point far from finished). A dramatic series of photographs illustrates the extent of the destruction at Narvik following the strategic Allied bombardment, with buildings and transporter ships destroyed or in flames; there are also up-close images of the wreckages of German destroyers, Juncker 55s and Heinkel 111s, and long-distance shots of Fallschirmjäger in descent. Allied forces entered Narvik on 27 May, but their situation quickly proved untenable and withdrawal began on 2 June: with Narvik won, the soldier's unit travelled northward into the arresting landscape of fjords (one image notably depicting the town of Bodö, largely destroyed by German action on 27 May). The closing images, aside from some images of Stukas and Juncker 87s in flight, portray the comparatively easy life of soldiers in pacified territory: an unidentified winter landscape is captioned "unser Heim", and there are photographs of raucous Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations, and soldiers skiing. The final leaf in the album is dated 1 May 1941. An excellent, meticulously-captioned visual record of one of Hitler's major early successes, also an important factor in Churchill

Georgia Warm Springs Foundation Annual Report for the Fiscal Year Ended September 30, 1940 [2 copies]; [and:] The Story of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis [2 copies].

Warm Springs, GA, & New York: Georgia Warm Springs Foundation & The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, 1940 & 1941 - 4 volumes, octavo. 2 copies of the GWSF annual report: 1 in original green cloth with green endpapers, 1 in original blue boards with blue endpapers, both with titles gilt and illustration mounted to front board as issued. 2 copies of The Story of the NFIP, both in original blue boards, titles to front board in white, blue endpapers, printed on burnished coarse-woven paper. Housed together in a custom blue solander box and chemise. Fine condition. GWSF annual report: photographic portrait frontispiece of Franklin D. Roosevelt, several similar illustrations to the text. First editions, first printings of two separate titles, each present in two copies. The copy of the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation (GWSF) annual report in blue boards has Roosevelt's presentation inscription to the front blank: "To Basil O'Connor—the motor-power that turned the wheels from Franklin D. Roosevelt 6/30/41 Hyde Park". Below, O'Connor has written: "This is #2 of 6 copies only in this binding. FDR has #1—Keith Morgan has #3. BoC". The copy in green boards bears the ownership inscription to the front blank: "Basil O'Connor's Copy. #12 of 15 copies in this binding". In August 1921, while the Roosevelts were vacationing in Canada, Roosevelt contracted a paralytic illness diagnosed as polio. (Roosevelt was then aged 39, and it is now thought he fell victim to Guillain–Barré syndrome, an autoimmune disorder virtually unknown at the time.) The illness left him with permanent paralysis from the waist down, which he made every effort to overcome. In 1926, he purchased a resort at Warm Springs, Georgia, where he founded a hydrotherapy centre for the treatment of polio patients; it still operates as the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. After Roosevelt became President, he helped to found the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (now known as the March of Dimes, after its revolutionary fund raising radio campaign). Basil O'Connor was a lawyer who worked as chief fundraiser for the GWSF (Wilson 2009). Keith Morgan was a New York insurance salesman hired by O'Connor to revitalise fundraising in the aftermath of the Wall Street Crash. The report is supplemented by "a brief history of the Foundation and a summary of its activities since its organization in 1927". In 1938, O'Connor, alongside the now President Roosevelt, would found the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (NFIP). Daniel J. Wilson, Polio (Westport: Greenwood, 2009).         Pictorial Map of the Republic of Panama with the Canal Zone. Designed and copyrighted by Clark Teegarden and John F. Herman.

Seattle.: Clark Teegarden and John F. Herman.. No date. Ca. 1940s.. Color pictorial / pictographic map / poster, archivally mounted on linen, image 29 x 46 inches on sheet 31 x 48 inches. Minor imperfections now minimising with archival backing, very good condition. A "painterly" example of a pictorial map with fine images of the history, natural and cultural life of the region, richly colored and placed within a strikingly designed flag border. There are two insets: the "Canal Zone and Vicinity" which is a detailed pictorial map at lower left and, at upper right, "Panama The Crossroads of the World". The pictographs highlight the animal life and characteristics of the area, including "the annual Zebra Swallowtail migration across Panama...," "old Indian gold mines," "the waters of Panama (Indian word meaning abundance of fish) are a mecca for game fishermen." The white sails of the yachts in the right foreground are used for charts of Weather Comparison, History Briefs (with information to July 9, 1941), and the Legend which includes such as Railroads, present locks and new third locks. "'With a partner in the 1940s he (Clark Teegarden) designed pictorial maps that in their era were quite popular, a Washington state map and a Panama Canal Map, the major reflections of his talent for painting,' said his son, John Teegarden of Seattle. 'They're neat because they have little illustrations for places in the state and in Panama. The Panama Map in particular was quite a success, and they got royalties. There were so many service and Canal Zone personnel there, and it was kind of a souvenir.'" (from Teegarden's obituary in the Seattle Times). A particularly sophisticated example of a pictorial map. .

The Excavation of Medinet Habu, Volume III, The Mortuary Temple of Ramses III, Part I

Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.: Univ of Chicago Press, 1941. This is NOT an ex library book. This is Part I only. Published June 1941. Translated from the German by Mrs. Keith C. Seele. Brown buckram heavy-duty binding, with crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the spine. Generally unbumped if lightly rubbed spine head and tail, with lightly bumped and rubbed corners. 16 x 12 inches. Text block firmly bound in. T.E.G. With xiii and 87 numbered pages of text, interspersed with numerous B&W figures and also with 40 full-page plates, the first two of which are in color. Many of the plates are of archival photos. To the top corner of the front pastedown, in a very neat and small ink hand, previous owner name and date. Else a clean volume, and rather tight. Respectfully read. No dust jacket [as issued?]. A Very Good Plus copy. With thanks to The Oriental Institute, University of Chicago: "Ramesses III?s great temple complex at Medinet Habu is distinguished from other royal mortuary temples in Egypt above all by the circumstance that much of the temple structure itself still stands and that excavation has made comparatively clear the entire temenos with all subsidiary structures, fortifications, and the like. Thus in Medinet Habu as nowhere else in Egypt are revealed the entire plan of such a large and rich temple complex and to some extent the cult and administration carried on within its walls. This extensive architectural creation of Ramesses III is the subject of Volumes III and IV of The Excavation of Medinet Habu. Each individual structure can really be understood only in its relation to the entire layout. On the other hand, it is impossible to gain an idea of the whole without first understanding the significance of each part. We therefore begin our treatise with a discussion of individual structures and groups of buildings and close with a comprehensive picture of the entire complex. The present volume is concerned only with the structures of the inner temple area, and a description of the Ramesseum is included for purposes of comparison.". First Edition. Buckram. Very Good Plus/No Jacket. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall.
