Falstaff. [Full score in autograph musical manuscript facsimile]

Milano: G. Ricordi, 1941. Limited Edition, this number 16 of 500 copies. Scarce. Published to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Verdi's death. Verdi's final opera, Falstaff is a commedia lirica in three acts to a libretto by Arrigo Boito after William Shakespeare's plays The Merry Wives of Windsor and King Henry IV. It was first performed in Milan at the Teatro alla Scala on February 9, 1893. "Few would deny how richly Verdi deserved this final triumph, or how heartening a message Falstaff offers. The opera leaves us with a musical image that exactly reflects those famous photographs of Verdi in his last years: an old man, in black hat, with eyes that have lived through a lifetime of struggle, smiling out wisely at the world." Roger Parker in Grove Music Online.. Folio. Quarter dark blue morocco with blue cloth boards, facsimile of Verdi's autograph signature to upper. 1f. (title), 394 pp. autograph musical manuscript facsimile + 1f. (recto printed colophon, verso blank). Binding very slightly worn; endpapers slightly browned and cockled.

        Reflections in a Golden Eye

Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston 1941 - First edition. Near fine in a price-clipped, fair only first issue dustwrapper with wrinkling caused by drying of the glue that is holding the glassine window on the front panel, and several internal repairs. This disastrous construction technique inevitably led to the shrinkage of the acetate which in turn wrinkled and tore the jacket. A less than ideal copy of the author's scarce second book.         Autograph manuscript signed twice ("P. S. B.").

No place, ca. March 1941. - 4to. 9 pp. on 9 ff. A series of book reviews for Asia magazine. First comes a brief note on "The autobiography of Jawaharlal Nehru [.] entitled Toward Freedom [.] the new edition, which contains a valuable new chapter that brings it up to date [.]". With Buck's "Asia Column", a book review, in which she writes, "Out of the Night, by Jan Valtin, is a book like none other that has ever been written. It is difficult to define exactly its unique quality and significance, but it has both these. The material is not in itself new. It is, superficially, the story of a German communist who was sent to work in underground activities for communism in many countries [.] among which were the United States and China. The book contains no propaganda. It is the story of a man so shaped by the circumstances of his time [.] that he was captured by communism [.] [For Communism] might be substituted almost any other impersonal power which has laid hold of human individuals and used them and dehumanized them [.]". - After a discussion of the book's contents, she concludes that "It all makes a book which everyone ought to read who believes in the dignity of the individual [.]". She next turns to "Workers Before And After Lenin by Manya Gordon [.] an examination into the conditions of the Russian labor for the last fifty years, and a comparison of the conditions of working people in that country now [.] The book begins with an account of the gains which labor was making before the revolution [.]". Rebelling against oppression and exploitation, "[.] The unions did not at once realize that they would be in exactly the same relation to the Soviet government as they were to their former capitalist employers [.] with one difference. Under the old system they could strike and arbitrate and negotiate. Under the new regime they lost all such rights [.]". She writes of the author's conclusion, "[.] If she is right and if the people of Russia are once more fighting for liberty [.] it brings them back into the world of peoples [.]". She reviews two other works more briefly, "Chinese Homes and Gardens [.] a joy to possess [.]" and "The Maori People Today", a collection of symposium essays. She notes that "[.] it has been taken for granted that the white man in New Zealand has treated the Maori with unusual justice and mercy [.]" but the collection shows there was "[.] no unusual goodness on the part of the white conquerors [.]". - Buck signs her initials after each of these last two reviews, the first in pencil. With numerous pencil and ink revisions. All pages stapled together in upper left corner. Binder holes at left edge. Age-toned, especially at edges, with some breaks in binder holes of first page, otherwise in very good condition. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Autograph Letter Signed

("C.S. Lewis") in black fountain pen ink on engraved Magdalen College, Oxford letterhead, May 17, 1941. 8vo (4 3/8" x 7"). 2 pages (1 leaf recto and verso). Fine, dark and clean example. A fine letter with some fascinating insights into the author's views on his early work, book dealing and the collector value of his earlier works. To [Joseph] McCulloch: Interesting letter about Lewis' book The Pilgrim's Regress and doubting that it would "be useful for a Forces' Programme" as "it's too darned meta-physical and full of unnecessary difficulties." Noting that "forwardness' about my own books I always regard as meritorious" the author states that the book "has been blitzed" and laments that he finds difficulty in dealing with the publisher, Mr. Sheed. Providing a list of people who might have a copy, the author states "I also have a strong suspicion that I might may be found for 4d in Charing + Rd. - at least I can't imagine any book of mine not reaching that destination." The author concludes "I hope you won't think my reluctance to risk my own solitary copy churlish, or conclude that, like Wodsworth, I make my own books my favourite reading! Mirrors have other uses than those of vanity." Together with a copy of C.S. Lewis' "The Problem of Pain", London, The Centenary Press, February 1941, third printing, with the ownership signature of "Joseph McCulloch / Oxford. May 1941." Joseph McCulloch, as Rector of St. Mary-le-Bow, would later host "Bow Dialogues" comprising a series of dialogues held at the church of St. Mary-le-Bow, London, from 1964 to 1979.

New York, Jewish National Fund Of America. 1941. Paperback. First edition. Original paper wrappers. 8vo. 12 pages; 21 cm. Very early (1941) use of the term “saving remnant” to describe what would be left of Jewry following the unfolding Holocaust in Europe, a reference to Genesis 45: 7, sometimes translated as: “God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant in the earth, and to keep you alive by a great deliverance. ” Holocaust-era speech delivered by Dr. Israel Goldstein, rabbi and president of the JNF, encouraging donations to expand settlements in Palestine to make room for WWII refugees when the war ends. “What a great privilege, and what a tremendous responsibility is ours-ours, Oh, American Israel-to lay broad foundations for our people's future! It is our responsibility because it is our good fortune, by grace of numbers, security and wealth, to be the “saving remnant” of our people. ” Presented just after the death of Louis D.         OPEN HOUSE

New York: Knopf, 1941. Cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. Fine in dust jacket with minimal use at edges. First edition of the author's first book. One of 1000 numbered copies, of which this is #834. This copy is in the variant binding (which is not distinguished by the bibliographer) with the Knopf imprint on the spine 6mm. up from the toe of the spine as opposed to 40mm. up from the toe. In our experience, copies bearing early numbers occur in the latter binding (as do several presentation copies inscribed contemporary with or close to publication we have handled), and this slightly variant binding occurs on copies with higher numbers. The dust jacket, while identical typographically, is printed on a stock with a noticeable pink tinge to it, as opposed to the light olive tan tinge of the jacket on other copies. Given Knopf's proclivity toward binding up lots of sheets at different times (particularly during war years) it would seem likely that this copy is in a secondary publisher's binding. Taking into account printers' practices, the variation in the color of the dust jacket is less than determinative.

"Both historically and artistically, Lucia deserves its reputation. When it was new it was regarded as the apogee of high Romantic sensibility. Although all the principal roles are vocally challenging, their music is uniformly grateful. Cammarano's libretto moved him deeply and, inspired by his recent first exposure to Paris, Donizetti produced what is certainly his masterpiece." William Ashbrook in Grove Music Online.
