Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket, unclipped ($2.50), slightly chipped at head and tail, creased closed tear at top of back panel, lightly worn along edges. Former owner's name written on front free endpaper.Burnham was a one-time Trotskyist who officially rejected dialectical materialism not long before publishing this book, an acclaimed critique of the worldwide authoritarianism that precipitated WWII. Burnham along with many other ex-communists like Daniel Bell and Dwight Macdonald would help inluence mainstream American cold war thought immensely, forming a consensus view that was mistrustful of totalitarianism in all forms, interventionist, capitalist, and much more pragmatic than it has generally been given credit for being.         Original Cartoon Drawing Signed, pen and wash, on a 3.5 x 5.5 inch board, docketed on verso "1941." Unpublished as far as our research indicates

      - Addams has drawn a humorous cartoon of a presumably naked hunter bathing in a lake surprised by a moose, close up. The moose's expression shows disapproval. The hunter, surprised, drops his soap in the lake. His shoes, hat and gun lay beside the lake. Addams signs in the lower left, "Chas Addams." Full docketing on verso: "Dec. 9, 1941" in pencil; "Sent Nov.12, 1941, Rec'd Dec. 9, 1941" in ink, both in another hand. A fine early cartoon ideal for a cartoon caption contest. Addams created the characters that became known as The Addams Family, the basis for two live-action television series, two cartoon series, and many motion pictures. He also created a syndicated comic strip, "Out of This World," which ran in 1956.

San Francisco:: The Colt Press. 1941).. First edition. This non-pornographic piece must have disappointed publishers anticipating something more lurid from Miller afer his "Tropic of Cancer" because ten New York publishers rejected it before Colt Press accepted it with an advance of only 100 USD [Shifreen & Jackson A26b]. INSCRIBED -- "TO TAMAR, THE FLAMING MEDEA OF BIG SUR WHO IMPROVISES 'UNITS' AND ISLANDS OF FOG AND SEA ANEMONES. HENRY MILLER. 4/2/44." The recipient is, perhaps, Robinson Jeffers who, though not a friend of Miller's, was a fellow inhabitant of Big Sur and whose most famous poem is titled "Tamar." Or more likely, though a bit disturbingly, it is perhaps inscribed to Tamar Nais Hodel, who was named for the poem and was the young daughter of Miller's friend and fellow inhabitant of Big Sur, Dr. George Hill Hodel -- a suspect in the infamous 1947 "Black Dahlia" murder and mutilation of Elizabeth Short. Tamar Hodel would have been around 9 years old at the time of the inscription, a tender young age to receive an inscribed book from a friend of ones father. But this was a father who allowed Man Ray to take nude pictures of her when she was 11 years old and whom she accused at 14 of sexual molesting her beginning when she was 11. (He was acquitted and fled the country soon after.) Name at base of front endpaper, cloth at spine ends and corners slightly frayed, general light cover wear, front hinge repaired where previously loose otherwise good to very good, lacking dust jacket. .

The man who loved children (First edition; Florence James' and Christina Stead's copy)

London : Peter Davies, 1941. First U.K. edition. Octavo, red cloth boards (upper board lightly marked), the personal copy of both Florence James (19 David St. Mosman) and later Christina Stead (Camberley, Surrey), the ownership signatures of both women on the front free endpaper, 480 pp (edges flecked), a well read copy, housed in a quarter blue morocco and blue cloth clamshell box. A highly important association copy of Christina Stead's most acclaimed novel. The New Zealand-born writer and literary agent Florence James had settled in Sydney in 1920, where she met and became a close friend of Christina Stead while the pair were studying English Literature at Sydney University. In the late twenties Stead and James spent time together in London and Paris, a formative period in the lives of both women. James married William 'Pym' Heyting in 1932, and is perhaps best remembered as the co-author with Dymphna Cusack of Come in Spinner (1951). She was also the model for Stead's eponymous character in her late novel, Miss Herbert (1976). The copy of The man who loved children which we offer here is in some respects the ultimate copy of Stead's most acclaimed novel: not only did it originally belong to her dear friend Florence James, but it subsequently passed back into the author's own hands, a tangible record of how Stead's brilliant literary achievement was cherished and shared in one of Stead's most important personal relationships.
