        Beating the Invader

Ministry of Information, London 1941 - "If invasion comes, everyone - young or old, men and women - will be eager to play their part worthily." This wartime leaflet is a tangible reminder that, in the early days of 1941, the outcome of the war was not a foregone conclusion and Britain's peril was quite real. The leaflet provides instructions from the Ministry of Information and Prime Minister Winston Churchill regarding what to do in case of invasion. Measuring 11 inches by 8.25 inches, the leaflet is printed on both sides of a thin, single sheet of paper. On March 10, 1941, at the request of the Ministry of Information, Churchill wrote the introduction to this leaflet. His introduction takes up two-thirds of the first page. After sober consideration of the timing and effect of such a message to the British people, the War Cabinet decided on April 24, 1941 to print more than 14 million copies and distribute the leaflet to all British households. Today these leaflets are scarce. In his Bibliography, Ronald Cohen writes: "The huge print run might leave one with the impression that the leaflet would be commonly found today. It was, however, only a leaflet anticipating an event that never came to pass. Few copies have survived." Here is a very good plus, notably clean and complete example for collectors. The paper suffers no losses, no spotting, and no soiling. We note only a very faint "5591" in pencil to the blank bottom margin of the verso which we have not attempted to erase. Searching for flaws, we observe truly trivial wear along the left edge. The age-toning is moderate and uniform. The only creasing marks noted are the customary horizontal and vertical folds, but this copy must have been long stored flat, as the original folds are faint. There is slight wear and creasing along the top edge. Not quite fine, but certainly a collector-worthy copy of this fragile and compelling bit of wartime history. Loosely laid in is the newsletter of The International Society For General Semantics with address label of the person Korzybski inscribed the book to. Second Edition with supplementary Introduction and Bibliography. Original blue cloth, 806 pages. "Alfred Habdank Skarbek Korzybski (July 3, 1879 - March 1, 1950) was a Polish-American philosopher and scientist. He is remembered for developing the theory of general semantics. Korzybski's work argued that human knowledge of the world is limited both by the human nervous system and by the structure of language. Korzybski thought that people do not have access to direct knowledge of reality; rather they have access to perceptions and to a set of beliefs which human society has confused with direct knowledge of reality. Korzybski is remembered as the author of the dictum: "The map is not the territory"."--Wikipedia. Some light general wear to the cloth covers, predominately at the spine ends.         Un canto para Bolivar.

Mexico City: Imprenta Universitaria,, 1941. Quarto. Original white card wrappers printed in brown and black, edges untrimmed, title page in brown and black and with vignette and border decoration, initials in brown. With the original unprinted glassine wrappers. Spine rubbed at tips and with short split at tail, endleaves a little spotted. An excellent copy in a faintly marked glassine chipped along the spine. First edition, limited to 500 copies. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half-title, "Para Gomez Sicre, afectuosamente, Neruda, 1942, Mex." The noted Cuban lawyer, art critic and author José Gómez Sicre (1916–1991) was an important conduit for Latin American artists seeking an audience in the United States. He moved in the same artistic and political circles as Neruda in both America and Europe. At the time of the inscription, Neruda held a diplomatic post as Consul General in Mexico City and Gómez Sicre would soon embark on a six-month sabbatical in New York, helping organise the MoMA exhibition Contemporary Cuban Painting. The poem is an openly political work praising Simón Bolívar, the liberator of South America from Spanish colonialism. Beginning with a verse modelled after the Lord's Prayer that substitutes Bolívar for God, Neruda places Bolívar on the battle lines in Madrid during the Spanish Civil War. De Costa argues that this poem marks a new direction for Neruda, in that he uses America as the subject for a new poetry of commitment (de Costa 104). The poem was composed for a reading in the Teatro Bolívar of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in Mexico on 24 July 1941, the 111th anniversary of Bolívar's death. Neruda reportedly had a case of writer's block, which he shifted with a glass of absinthe only a few hours before the reading (Augier). Spanish exile Joaquín Xirau gave a speech before Neruda's reading in which he claimed that Bolívar was a "Spanish patriot" (Siqueiros). This politically charged statement, aligning Bolívar with the Spanish Republicans, annoyed some Franco supporters in the audience. The political tone of Neruda's poem further irritated them and they interrupted him with cries of "Death to the Spanish Republic" and "Long live the Generalissimo". A near-riot ensued; UNAM printed Neruda's poem in this lovely edition to make amends (Teitelboim 220).
