Toulouse, No Publisher (The Author). 1941. Paperback. 1st edition. Mimeograph sheets. Loose as issued. Folio, 10 pages. Square Hebrew letters with nikud (vowel points) . The colophon reads in Hebrew: ?"Joshua Bindiger, Toulouse. ?" In French was added, ?"Rue Belle Paule 11?". Pp. 10 (all published) . Soon after the outbreak of the Second World War, foreign-born Jews, especially recent refugees from Germany and Austria, were summarily arrested and interned by the French government in bleak detention camps in South-Western France. Suffering under severe conditions and quite cut off from the outside world, some enterprising inmates of the camps succeeded in clandestinely producing - from memory- this mimeograph edition of the Festival liturgy. A more well-known example of this genre is the Gurs Haggadah (see B. Gutterman, The Gurs Haggadah: Passover in Perdition, 2003) . The present High Holiday Prayer Book was handwritten by Joshua Bindiger and then mimeographed. Yerushalmi provides in facsimile the final page of the more common Hagadah, written by the same individual and issued under the aegis of ?"S. R. Kapel, Rabbin de Mulhouse, Aumonier des Camps, Toulouse?" [Yerushalmi, Haggadah, plate 162]. Exceedingly rare. Searching OCLC/Worldcat, British OPAC, The French National Library, and the library catalogs of the Wiener Library, the Imperial War Museum, the Bibliotheque du Toulouse, and others, we could locate not a single copy of this prayerbook in any library or archive anywhere. According to our research, it has been offered for sale only once at auction or in the trade in the past 70 years. Formerly housed in sheaths in 3-ring binder, with slight edgewear (not holes) where sheaths touched rings; otherwise Very Good Condition. (holo2-122-61) xx .

Photo Album - Set of 2 - RAF in Iraq

Iraq, 1941. Habbaniya, Baghdad, northern Iraq, Sharjah, 1941-1943. A pair of photograph albums of Royal Air Force Leading Aircraftman (LAC) C.J. Sainty, who served the AHQ Iraq Command, in which is a special section devoted to the Battle of Habbaniya. Together with his colour manuscript bombing mechanism diagrams, and assorted comic relief texts. Albums contain 267 black and white photographs combined, neatly organized and most captioned in manuscript. First volume: Small oblong 8vo. string-tied album (106 images), measures approximately 22 x 16 cm, tooled black cloth boards, ownership inscription in white ink faintly visible to bottom front right corner. Second volume: Uncommon Photograph Album With Manuscript Bomb Diagrams - Battle of Habbaniya - WWII RAF in Iraq Oblong 8vo. string-tied album (161 images) measures approximately 33 x 24 cm, beige cloth boards. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 4,5 x 6 cm, and the largest 25 x 19 cm. Loss to some tissue guards, scant few photographs creased, otherwise in Very Good Condition, remarkable, crisp images. Dramatic aftermath scenes of the Battle of Habbaniya May 1941, spectacular views from the old commercial district of Al-Ashar in Basrah, and a comprehensive visual chronicle of camp life and travel with the Royal Air Force in Iraq, together form a substantial and noteworthy firsthand presentation of the Middle East Theater of the Second World War, as experienced by a young man who served at least three years there. Following 32 photographs taken in India, including a tour of Bombay, and the military camp at Colaba in Mumbai, the first album finds LAC Sainty in Iraq for his participation in the Second World War. In Baghdad he photographs minarets, local residents, and Al Rasheed Street. Habbaniya is the focus of this volume, with views of a date plantation, Arab fishermen on Lake Habbaniya, AHQ Habbaniya, a large cemetery, and mud and stone walled dwellings on the Eurpates river bank. Most uncommon however, is a special section devoted to the Battle of Habbaniya, captioned "The Fortunes of War. May 1941. R.A.F. v Rebels." Herein are a dozen photographs of Iraqi field guns and tanks, British war tanks and armoured cars, fallen aircraft including the Messerschmitt Bf 110 (often called Me 110), and disturbing graphic images of severed cadavers and limbs strewn in the desert, the result of a successful defence of the British sovereign airbase against the encroaching Iraqi Army in May 1941. The second album begins with a full page photograph of a parade and raising of the RAF ensign flag at RAF Habbaniya, performed by AHQ Iraq (Air Headquarters Iraq), a command of the Royal Air Force, formed on 1 November 1941 by renaming HQ British Forces in Iraq, the former RAF Iraq Command. In Baghdad, Sainty photographs the copper market and a man enjoying a hookah, a pontoon bridge, the Royal Palace, a round 'guffa' cargo boat, and a mosque on the Euphrates river. Overhead flights in RAF aircraft further render lovely aerial views of Babylon, the Ctesiphon arch, and the pyramids of Egypt. Christmas 1942 was spent at Zoubair [Az Zubayr] just south of Basra, a photograph of a comical menu poster for RAF Maintenance Unit No. 119 commemorates the event. Glimpses of RAF Shaibah are dispersed throughout. Superb photographs are taken at Ashar, the heart and historical center of Basra, including its famous street bazaar, and lovely scenes on Ashar creek, one showing the ancient Saddam Mosque in the background. In Ashar, he visits the Times press and the Breyah quarter. A boatman, Arabian policemen in long coats, a barber, a craftsman, machine shop workers, a bread maker, a copper beater, and long hand crafted river boats, a camel caravan illustrate indigenous ways with remarkable quality images captured by a keen and curious observer. [Ashar is the heart of the city and the old commercial center. Its covered bazaar and mosque mark the end of the creek that links it and the river to Old Basra.] A large photograph of the unit in which Sainty served is captioned "A few of ERS at Habbaniya 1943" [Engine Repair Section]. On his own accord he photographs his colleagues on several occasions, including those of the Assyrian RAF Levies Army unit with whom they worked hand-in-hand. On 1 April 1943 a formal 25th anniversary celebration of the RAF was held at Habbaniya. Also in 1943 Sainty and company make a journey though rugged mountainous terrain into northern Iraq. Scenes include a tall minaret and stone complex, a single winding road piercing an endless vista of desolate hills, a local man cooking on a small outdoor stove, a swimming hole at Duraji, a quaint Arab village called Sir Amadir, a Bedouin encampment, and a glimpse of Mosul, where the principle mode of transportation in the city was still horse-drawn carriages. This album concludes with views of camp life at the RAF station at Sharjah, near Dubai, on the Arabian Peninsula, and group photographs of Sharjah's Base Flight Crew, as well as 'A' Flight ground crew of Masirah, under Aden Command. Accompanying the two albums are the aircraftman's own manuscript colour drawings - 11 pages comprising an immaculate illustration of the construction of incendiary bomb components and functionality, as well as a signed poem by him dated 22 December 1943 revealing that he was struck with malaria. Further poems suggest that he was moved to RAF Masirah in 1944. Royal Air Force Station Habbaniya, more commonly known as RAF Habbaniya, (originally RAF Dhibban) was a Royal Air Force station at Habbaniyah, about 55 miles (89 km) west of Baghdad in modern day Iraq, on the banks of the Euphrates near Lake Habbaniyah. It was operational from October 1936 until the 31 May 1959 when the British were finally withdrawn following the July 1958 Revolution. The base was extensive and included the Air Headquarters of RAF Iraq Command, maintenance units, an aircraft depot, an RAF hospital, RAF Iraq Levies barracks, the RAF Armoured Car Company depot as well as fuel and bomb stores. There were numerous billets, messes and a wide range of leisure facilities including swimming pools, cinemas and theatres, sports pitches, tennis courts and riding stables. It was self-contained with its own power station, water purification plant and sewage farm. Within the base was the Civil Cantonment for the civilian workers and their families and the families of the RAF Iraq Levies. Water taken from the Euphrates for the irrigation systems enabled green lawns, flower beds and even ornamental Botanical Gardens. After World War II the families of British personnel started living at Habbaniya and a school was started. Shaibah is the name of a small village and a site of a military airfield near Az Zubayr, 7 miles (11 km) south west of Basrah in Iraq. The area was the site of a battle with Turkish Forces during the Mesopotamian campaign of the First World War. It was the site of RAF Shaibah from 1920 until 1956 when it was then handed over to the Iraqi Air Force. The 3rd Indian Motor Brigade was reformed as 43rd Lorried Infantry Brigade there in December 1942 - February 1943 during the Second World War. The Assyrian Levies were formed in 1915 when Major J.I. Eadie, Special service officer in the Muntafiq Division in Mesopotamia, recruited forty (40) mounted Arabs for duty under the Intelligence Department as bodyguard for political officers in southern and central Iraq. The force was first named Arab Scouts. In 1918 the force rose to 5,467 of Arab, Kurd, Turkoman, Marsh Arab and Assyrian Militia. At the 1921 Cairo conference the Iraq Levies were ordered to relieve British and Indian troops in Iraq and Kurdistan. The Iraq Army was to be formed and the Arab Levies were required to join it. In 1937 Habbaniya was occupied and used as an RAF base. In 1940 the Iraqi forces joined the Axis powers and in 1941 the battle for Habbaniya took place. The force had been increased by 11,000 recruits, mostly Assyrian, but also Kurd and Yezidi. In 1943 force strength stood at 166 British officers, 22 Assyrian companies, 5 Assyrian/Yizidi companies, 10 Kurdish companies, 4 Gulf Arab companies and 3 Baluchi companies. In addition, 11 Assyrian companies were serving in Palestine and 4 in Cyprus. The Parachute Company was embodied in the Royal Marine Commando and later were used in operations in Albania and Greece. 400 Assyrian joined from Syria, they were used in the specialist?'s communication companies. The name of the force was changed to Royal Air Force Levies.. Very Good.

(Norwalk CT): (The O'Brien Suburban Press). 1941 (really 1942). First. First edition. Wrappers, bound in blue cloth with gilt lettering, as issued. Corners and boards rubbed and modestly worn, a very good copy, internally fine. The first edition was 1000 copies in wrappers, an informed party tell us that Fleischer had a few copies bound up for presentations and gifts.
