Very good indeed. Miller & Matthews (B33.3) are less than complimentary about the production, and perhaps not without reason, although this remains distinctly uncommon, to say the least.

Addtionally inscribed by Bemelmans, opposite the signed limited page. There was also the more common 245 copies signed by Bemelmans. In fine condition. Slipcase is worn. Hotel Splendide is a collection of stories and drawings detailing Bemelmans' time at the Hotel Splendide where he worked as a waiter after arriving in New York from Austria.

Corners very slightly bumped, and some offsetting to the front fly from a clipping, thus near fine in very good dustwrapper faded at the spine and with several very small nicks and tears. Nicely Inscribed by the author: "For my friends Frances and Joe Jones with regards, Vereen Bell. Nov 25 '41." Bestselling first and only novel by the Georgia-born son of that state's Chief Justice. Basis for the 1941 film directed by Jean Renoir, and featuring Walter Brennan, Walter Huston, Anne Baxter, and Dana Andrews, and with appearances by John Carradine and Ward Bond. Also remade in 1952 by Jean Negulesco with Jean Peters, Jeffrey Hunter, Constance Smith, and Walter Brennan (this time in a different role). Bell was killed in 1944 while serving at sea during the war (the subject of the aforementioned clipping), and very few signed copies of this title appear. .

        A Subtreasury of American Humor

      New York: Armed Services Editions, Inc, 1941 [1944]. First Edition. Wraps. Good. Co-edited by husband and wife team E. B. White (1899-1985) and Katharine S. White (1892-1977), Coward McCann published the original edition of this title on November 7, 1941, the Armed Services Edition was issued in 1944 although the only copyright indicated is 1941. [Hall B5] The only book that the Whites collaborated on, the title went through multiple editions over the years, the last published in an abridged version in 1962. & & This edition is unique in that it is signed by both E.B. and Katharine S. White in pencil on the title page requesting that the book be returned to them at their home in No. Brooklin, Maine or to The New Yorker at 25 W. 43 St. in New York. Laid in are is a folded letter from John Y. Cole, Executive Director of The Center for the Book at the Library of Congress and dated March 15, 1983. The letter thanks E.B. White for his letter to Mr. Cole regarding the Armed Services Editions celebration held at the Library of Congress on in February of 1983 marking the 40th anniversary of the first titles published in that series. Also laid in is the folded photocopy of the Washington Post article on the celebration luncheon that was published on February 8, 1983. A rare and unique by two giants in the field of American letters. From the Estate of Joel (1930-1997) & Allene White. First Armed Services Edition. x, 438 pp. 32mo.
