[Photo Album]: India World War II

India. 1941. Oblong quarto. Measuring 8" x 11". Black leather over paper boards with gilt decorations stamped on the front board. Contains 194 black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.5" x 3.5" and 3.5" x 4.5", with captions. Very good photo album with edgewear and some rubbing with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by British officer, Alan Dudley while he was serving alongside the Bengal Engineer Group, also called the "King George V's Bengal Sappers and Miners Group" in India during World War II. The photos are well composed and show group photos of men in uniform throughout Bombay and Kashmir. One section shows them surveying a demolition site on the Soan River with officers walking through the rubble and soldiers seated by the river eating. Another section shows the on-base wedding of Captain Anwar Khan with photos of the newlyweds in flower garlands, camel transport, and a large breakfast for the guests. Some of the photos have extensive captions such as "Sunset from the hill of the temple near Poona - the hill in the left distance is a famous Maratta [sic] fort, where the Maratta King held out for weeks against the British. He built underground water tanks in the rock, which contain crystal clear water to this day." Included in the photos are images of leisure activities such as horse races, as well as a number of photos with a bear cub in captivity. The landscape of India can be seen throughout with snow covered mountains, rivers, temples, and a visit to Fatehpur Sikri as well as local people and Indian soldiers. Soldiers are seen carrying out orders on the banks of rivers and in candid photos throughout. The last few pages show a trip to Kashmir with photos from a hike, swimming, and surrounding villages. An extensive collection of a soldier's amateur photography documenting the Indian theater of war in World War II. .

      S. n. (ca. 1941-1944.), N. p. - Original, vintage photographic poster. Printed in blue and yellow. Text in Polish. 420 × 620 mm. Polish antisemitic, anti-Bolshevik Nazi propaganda poster. The poster is composed of six photographic images and a printed yellow Star of David in the upper left corner, and printed yellow "contrast-lines". The six individual images are numbered and their description is printed to the lower left corner. They show desecrated churches, exhumed and distorted corps, and the text claims all were perpetrated by the Bolsheviks. The title of poster is "Bolszewizm oznacza panowanie ?ydów" (Bolshevism means the domination of the Jews), and the lower text tells that between 1918 and 1936 48,600 priests were killed in Russia, while there are no reports about the murder of any rabbis. Scarce Nazi propaganda poster. We could trace only one copy in institutional holdings in Germany (Bundesarchiv; Plak 003-039-004). Small tears to edges, no effect to the images.         Tortilla Flat (Original screenplay for the 1942 film)

Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1941. Revised Shooting script for the 1943 film. Likely a crew member's copy, with director Fleming's name on the front wrapper in holograph pencil, although the signature is not in the hand of Fleming. Brief notations throughout in holograph pencil. The fourth Steinbeck script to be adapted in as many years. Not as well known today as "The Grapes of Wrath" or "Of Mice and Men," but still a wonderful, warm adaptation of what is perhaps Steinbeck's lightest and most anecdotal novel, with expert interplay among Spencer Tracy, John Garfield, and the great Henry Morgan. John Garfield plays a Mexican-American named Danny whose grandfather leaves him two houses as inheritance. Unfortunately Danny's friends quickly move into Danny's newfound homes, and Danny must struggle to find employment and get the girl. Set in Northern California. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Goldenrod studio wrappers, rubber-stamped COMPLETE and copy No. 71, dated 7/16/41, with credits for producer Zimbalist and screenwriter Mahin. Title page integral with revision summary page, dated 7/16/41. 140 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 127. Mimeograph, with revision pages throughout, dated variously between 7/18/41 and 11/12/41, and a few yellow revision pages dated 10/28/41.         Remembrance of Things Past: Swann's Way, Within A Budding Grove, The Guermantes Way, Cities of the Plain, The Captive, The Sweet Cheat Gone, Time Regained

London: Chatto & Windus, 1941-1944. Twelve octavo volumes, modern three-quarter blue morocco lettered in gilt, blue cloth boards, top edges gilt. Spines lightly toned. Uniform Edition of Proust's great novel, first published in Paris between 1913 and 1927, handsomely bound. The first eleven volumes follow C.K. Scott Moncrieff's first English translation; the final volume, Time Regained, is translated by Stephen Hudson. In À la Recherche du Temps Perdu, now usually translated as In Search of Lost Time, Proust attempted to "encircle the truth with a single -- even if long and sinuous -- stroke," evoking an entire sensual world of experience through his narrator's fluctuating memory: "the whole of Combray and its surroundings, taking their proper shapes and growing solid, sprang into being, town and gardens alike, from my cup of tea." Original invoices for books (W. & G. Foyle, London) and bookbinding (Crane Bookshop, Surrey) laid into Volume I. A bright near-fine set.

Completed in black holograph ink, signed, with Ms. Gardner indicating her current married name ("Ava Gardner Rooney") her birth date, her age (19), her place of birth (North Carolina), birthday, marital status, height, weight, etc. Rubber-stamped with a file number, and other holograph secretarial notations in the margin. Attached at the top right corner is a "mug shot" of the actress, with an MGM clapboard held just below her face. Though undated, the form, based on the information provided, must have been filled out in 1942, after Ms. Gardner was married to Mickey Rooney (January 10, 1942) and prior to her 20th birthday (December 24, 1942). This was the same year she arrived in Hollywood, at the peak of the studio system era. MGM was the first studio to offer work to the young actress following a New York screen test. Gardner came from a large family of poor cotton and tobacco farmers in North Carolina, and while she required a speech coach to rid her of an incomprehensible southern drawl, her presence on film was magnetic from the very beginning. 8.5 x 11 inches, printed on recto only, Very Good plus. Photograph is .75 x 1 inches, Near Fine.

Fighter Pilot: A Personal Record of the Campaign in France September 8th, 1939, to June 13th, 1940 [Signed]

Published by B. T. Batsford Ltd., 15 North Audley Street, London First Edition September 1941. 1941. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original light blue cloth covers, navy blue titles to the spine and the front cover. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. Contains 122 printed pages of text with monochrome photographs throughout. Foxing to the page edges and end papers. Very Good condition book in Very Good condition price clipped dust wrapper with short closed tear to the top and bottom of the spine. 'Fighter Pilot' started life as a personal journal kept by Paul Richey from the outbreak of war when he went to France with 1 Squadron in September 1939. It provided a diversion during the eight months of the 'Sitzkrieg' and was kept up in note form during the 'Blitzkrieg'. On his return, he was persuaded to publish it but as his editor recalls 'I had to cajole Paul from his fighter station near London to come up and work with me on the book. He would meet enemy aircraft in combat during the day and hurry up to London to work on his proofs by night. I came across the restless spirit of the fighter pilot for the first time, and also, in him to realise the selfless gallantry and sense of adventure that impelled those men. Fighter Pilot sold 75,000 copies as quickly as we could print them and we could have sold twice as many if it were not for paper restrictions.' [Nick Stein]. SIGNED by the author to the front free end paper 'To Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Payne, With my best thanks for all your help and interest in connection with this book Paul Richey.' 'The first and finest story of a fighter pilot in World War II' Group Captain Peter Townsend. Two newspaper obituaries loosely inserted. Member of the P.B.F.A.

      - This fascinating and beautiful Japanese map is depicts the Hawaiian Islands as they appeared shortly after Japan’s shocking surprise airborne attract upon the major U.S. Navy base of Pearl Harbor, near Honolulu, on December 7, 1941, "a date which will live in infamy," as movingly said by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The main map depicts the four main Hawaiian Islands (Hawaii, Maui, Oahu and Kauai) and their companions, while an inset in the upper right details the entire chain extending from Hawaii to the Necker Island, while the inset in the lower left corner features a detailed plan of the Oahu’s Honolulu-Pearl Harbor area. The map is very attractively designed, with resplendent hues of blue covering the seas, with coral reefs marked in red, while the islands rise in green hues, with shading expressing their dramatic volcanic topography. All major towns, ports, roads and railways are marked. Perhaps somewhat invidiously (given the nature of the Pearl Harbor attack), the islands are linked with a network of flight routes, giving the work a dual use as an aeronautical map. The Honolulu-Pearl Harbor inset lends a clear definition to the site of history’s most shocking and consequential airborne operation. Japan remained a clean a present danger to Hawaii until U.S. forces decisively defeated the Japanese air force at the Battle of Midway (June 3-7, 1942), which occurred over the minor islands in the northwestern part of the Hawaiian chain. The present map was separately issued in Japan, although it is no. 18 of a series of 20 regional maps made between 1942 and 1943 to depict the various Pacific-Asian theatres of World War II. A small sticker in the upper margin of the map, just to the right of the title, reads ‘1943’. This map is by far the most attractive and detailed WW2 map of Hawaii that we have ever encountered.

1940 - 1941. Ansichten und Ereignisse in diesen wichtigen Jahren. [Unikat zum Exil in Guatemala. Typoscript]

Coastal Artillery Battery Journal with Real Photo Postcards

Camp Hulen Tx, Hampton Roads Va, and Louisiana, 1941. Hard Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Lt. Howard's journal spans the entire year during which he and his unit, F Battery of the 211th (Massachusetts) Coastal Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft) underwent training at Camp Hulen (a major Coastal Artillery training base) and Hampton Roads, as well as his unit's participation in the famous Louisiana Maneuvers. It concludes with entries regarding the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the 211th's immediate deployment by rail to California where it manned positions defending San Francisco and Oakland. Two months of entries, August and September, describe the Louisiana Maneuvers where over 400,000 soldiers tested emerging doctrine, tactics, organizations, and equipment in preparation to fight the German Army if necessary. Many of Howard's comments reflect the frustrations of a company-level commander in an underfunded peacetime army just beginning to gear up for war, and they focus on facilities, colonels and generals, dressings-down, weapons systems, maintaining discipline, training, epidemics, bureaucracy, mud, and more. At one point he declares, "Boy, if Hitler comes here we will beat him to death with signs and paperwork. We have little else." 16 Real Photo Postcards of the 211th in Texas and Louisiana accompany the journal. The journal's binding is sound although slightly cocked and with cracked hinges. Clean pages with legible entries. Cover has some edge wear.
