        SOLOMON'S VINEYARD

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd. 1941 - First edition, first printing. Publisher's original blue cloth with black titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good or better copy, the binding a little rubbed and bumped at the extremities. The contents are clean and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the rubbed and nicked original dustwrapper. which has small chips at the spine tips and a closed tear to the upper panel. Not price-clipped (7s. 6d. net to the front flap). An attractive example. The author's most notorious novel, banned in the US and therefore the only one of his books to be first published in the UK. A hard-boiled classic. Born in Chicago and working as a journalist for the Chicago Herald Examiner, Latimer served in the US Navy during World War Two after which he moved to California and went on to enjoy a successful screenwriting career. Aptly a year after the publication of Solomon's Vineyard he racked up a scriptwriting credit on Dashiell Hammett's The Glass Key.         THE GRAPES OF WRATH. (OF MICE AND MEN)

Random House, NY 1941 - . NY: Random House, 1941. First Modern Library edition. Worn dustjacket (supplied), cloth stained and soiled (mostly at spine and not affecting internals), still solidly bound. Inscribed by Steinbeck to Moss Hart on the half title: For Moss Hart this book is touchingly inscribed - with pleasure and gratitude for Lennie knows what. John Steinbeck. Lennie is the key word that links Steinbeck to Hart, as Lennie Small is the tragic character in Of Mice and Men, and it is Moss Hart's principal collaborator, George S. Kaufman, who adapted the novella with Steinbeck for the stage in 1937. The inscription, unfortunately undated, can be no earlier than 1941 (when this edition was published) so it was not executed at the same time Steinbeck and Kaufman worked together. The back story for the inscription is provided by journalist and radio producer Don Swaim, resident of Bucks County and chairman of the Writer's Workshop there, on his excellent website. Bucks County was a favorite area for "country homes" for Manhattan writers, artists and "theater people" in the 1930s-1950s. Moss Hart and his wife Kitty Carlisle owned Fairview Farm in Holicong and Kaufman and his wife Beatrice were not far away at their estate, Cherchez La Farm. Steinbeck had written most of the short novel Of Mice in Men in dialogue form and he thought it would be easy to adapt to the stage. Kaufman had secured the stage rights. Steinbeck had written an adaptation but Kaufman saw that it needed immediate work, as the play was to be staged that fall. He invited Steinbeck to join him at his farm where in the later part of August 1937 they rewrote together Of Mice and Men. The degree to which Kaufman re-shaped the play is an open question. A comparative analysis by Jackson J. Benson in The Short Novels of John Steinbeck: Critical Essays With a Checklist to Steinbeck Criticism suggests that, even though the dialogue is about 80% directly from the novella, the narrative drama of the stage version was partly achieved by expanding the dialogue of Curley's wife, mistakenly killed by Lennie, and making her more sympathetic. The play opened in November to critical acclaim, edging Our Town for the Drama Critics Award, and spawned a successful movie version two year later. Steinbeck tired of the New York scene and returned to California to write The Grapes of Wrath. He never commented or wrote publicly about his experience with Kaufman, although in his later years well after Kaufman's death, he consistently credited Kaufman with the play's success. Still, Steinbeck's experience with Kaufman in August 1937 could not have been easy. He had written Of Mice and Men almost as a 'play-novella" and likely anticipated an easy transfer from page to stage. Thus, the inscription raises many questions for Steinbeck biographers and scholars. Had Steinbeck, commiserated with Hart, as the inscription suggests, who was just down the road from Kaufman about Hart's partner's reworking of his work? ("Damnit, Moss, what is George doing with my story?") Does Steinbeck refer to Lennie because he wanted to "protect" his tragic figure from Curly's wife becoming more sympathetic in Kaufman's hands? Is the reference to Lennie an allusion to how no one, perhaps even Steinbeck himself, could understand what was going through the mind of a person like Lennie? The inscription is also distinctive in that it is not common for Steinbeck to make explicit references to characters in his books in his inscriptions. No matter how dear the character Lennie may have been to Steinbeck and whatever Steinbeck meant in the inscription, this discovery surely is a vital artifact of Steinbeck's career and of American stage and film history both. (The provenance of the book is clear. By the late 50s, Kitty Carlisle had grown tired of the maintenance of the Bucks County farm and wanted to spend more time in New York and, in an eagerness to return to her and Moss' Manhattan apartment on a per.         Correspondence archive. Various places, 1941-1989.

1941. A quantity of some 155 letters and postcards, including several addenda (postcards, clippings, photographs, etc.). To Oskar Haaf, head of the entertainment department at the German radio station Südwestfunk Baden-Baden, and to his wife Ria. A copious collection of about 93 autograph or typed letters, 15 folded lettercards, and 47 postcards and photographs, with several addenda. - Trenker's friendship with the broadcaster Haaf, which dated from the prewar years, intensified in the 1960s when the busy mountaineer and film maker began to concentrate on lectures, documentaries, and wide and varied appearances on radio and television. The numerous letters and postcards offer a lively account of their collaboration (including a long Trenker feature which entails a discussion about the classical music to be used), but also provide a narrative of the many years in which Trenker, ever bustling with activity, produced scripts, songs, radio shows, and much more. Among the subjects of the correspondence are Karajan and Kokoschka (whom he criticises), the memoirs of Tilla Durieux (which he is reading), Ennio Morricone (whom music for "Once Upon a Time in the West" he praises), and his forged Eva Braun diaries (which he disowns). The collection expands the well-known image of Trenker as a popular mountaineer, showing him as an intelligent, active, and well-read man fully abreast with current developments even in his old age. - Occasional edge damage; some letters with punched holes.

Ms. Brief mit Zeichnung und eigen. Brief, beide mit U. [Stuttgart], 19. XI. 1941 und 23. VI. 1944.

1941. Zusammen 4 SS. 1954/1959. Mit Anschreiben von Baumeisters Witwe Margaret Baumeister.

"Hoplopoiia, Iliada Sigma (S. 368-618)". Autograph manuscript signed ("N. Kazantzaki"). No place, c. 1941-1947.

1941. 10 ff. of ms., with an additional f. of notes. 11 ff. altogether, written in ink on one side only, narrow folio format (c. 35 x 17 cm). Complete manuscript of the famous "Hoplopoiia" section of Kazantzakis's Iliad translation: a pivotal part of the 18th book (rhapsody sigma) of Homer's epic. Kazantzakis and the scholar J. T. Kakridis collaborated on this metrical translation from classical Greek into the modern demotic language over a 14-year period. When it was privately printed in 1955, the controversial effort was hailed as "'living' poetry, through which the modern Greeks will be able to grasp much of the vigour, the passion, and the values of the heroic world of the Iliad" (C. A. Trypanis, The Classical Review 8 [1958], p. 280). The "Hoplopoiia", or the "Making of Armor for Achilles", is one of the most famous parts of Homer's poem: After the death of Patroclus has convinced Achilles to re-enter battle and avenge his friend, his mother Thetis seeks out the smithing god Hephaistus, who fashions a new set of armour for him, among which is a magnificently wrought shield. The detailed description (ekphrasis) of this shield, which takes up most of the present ms., is regarded as one of the paramount passages in Western literature: starting from the center and moving outward, the shield shows first the heavenly bodies (Earth, sky and sea, the sun, the moon and the constellations), then a city at peace (a wedding; a lawsuit; council) and at war (opposing armies; the gods; an ambush); country life (ploughing and reaping; vintage; a herd of cattle attacked by lions; a sheep farm); dancing youths and maidens; and finally, the all-enclosing ocean stream. In essence, the shield offers a physical encapsulation of the entire world: the various layers of this microcosm present a series of contrasts, antitheses that show the basic forms of a civilized, essentially orderly life. Leading up to Achilles's return to battle and one of the bloodiest parts of the Iliad, the Shield Ekphrasis also provides a moment of calm before the storm. - Traces of horizontal folds. Numerous revisions, corrections, and insertions in ink and pencil; caption "Iliada 18 (S. 368-618)" broadly underlined in red crayon. In the final page of notes (written on the reverse of a leaf on which the beginning of the translation has been struck out), Kazantzakis states that this version is not to be considered final and will require revisions as to orthography and accentuation. While the present ms. was probably composed and revised over a period of several years (the variations in pen type and ductus pointing to at least three main stages), the statement that work had been ongoing for three years suggests a time frame around the year 1944. Includes Certificate of Authenticity, issued by Spanos Rare Books, Athens.

        FIRE AND ICE

New York Duell, Sloan and Pearce 1941 - First edition, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED by Wallace Stegner. 8vo, publisher’s original blue boards, lettered in white on the spine, in the original dustjacket. 214 pp. A near fine copy with only a hint of wear to the spine edges and with a jacket that is complete with inoffensive evidence of shelf wear to its edges. AN EXCELLENT COPY OF THIS RARE AND INSCRIBED STEGNER TITLE. The central figure in the novel is a fierce rebel, who is working his way through college, and who is mor than ready to take arms against the injustice of the world he knows. He becomes desperately attracted to a girl of wealth and beauty who represents everything that he has forced himself to reject and disdain. The inscription is for Virginia, a close friend of Stegner and his "favorite reader". He signs very familiarly as "Wally". Stegner was a professor at Harvard when he wrote this book. Virginia was a friend at Harvard during the same time as Stegner's stint at the university. His REMEMBERING LAUGHTER was issued in 1937 to critical acclaim. It won the Little, Brown contest and was followed by ON A DARKLING PLAIN. It is said of FIRE AND ICE the the pace of Stegner's narrative is more beautifully calculated than ever before and his feeling for word and phrase more acute. Inscribed copies of this early work are very scarce indeed. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Romano Felmang (1941 - ) is an Italian artist best known for his illustrations of American comic strip characters such as The Phantom and Flash Gordon. The Phantom by Romano Felmang. His first work, in 1962, was a Phantom story titled Kaniska, which was never published in its original form, but which gained him entry to the SPADA brothers, neighbors who published Italian comic books. He was drafted, however, before any of his stories could be published. In 1966, the SPADA brothers published his Phantom story Raiders of the Great King Tomb, and he has since drawn a large number of stories for them and for other publishers, featuring The Phantom, Flash Gordon, Rip Kirby, and Secret Agent X-9. Since 1987, he has produced many stories for SEMIC International. His work has been published in Italy, France, Norway, Denmark, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia, and in the United States he has drawn covers for Comics Revue. Shanghai, Kelly & Walsh, 1941 (first edition). 1 volume in-quarto, 37 pages, hard cover, internally fine. A wonderful set of Doris' sketches in Chungking Province, including The Cooton Yarn Worker, The Peddling Haberdasher, The Comb seller, The Letter Writer and Fortune Teller, the Portable Hat Shop.... A very rare book by Doris Worcester who was an artist, excelling in pastel and water colours. She and her husband were prisoners of the Japanese during the second Word War. She died in 1945 after release from the Japanese concentration camp in Shanghai. A Publishers'note in the second edition of this book ( Hong kong, Vetch & Lee, 1970) indicates that this first edition ( 1941) was printed in Shanghai, but before it could be put on sale, the Japanese seized the International Settlement Of Shanghai and this edition was destroyed. There-fore this edition is very valuable.
