Tel Aviv: The Anti-Nazi League, 1940. Paperback. Very good. Booklet of postcards. 6.5" x 4.25". Complete with all ten postcards. Text in Hebrew, English, and French; postcard captions in English. Minor soiling to the cover. Text and cards are lightly toned. Three of the postcards are separated along their perforations and are laid-in the booklet. This book of postcards published by the Anti-Nazi League of Tel Aviv was a very early-said by some to be the earliest-depiction of Nazi atrocities against the Jews. As noted in the album's introduction, the postcards were intended to publicize Nazi barbarism, "The most tragic thing is that people aren't paying attention to this horrifying information from Poland...that's why the Anti-Nazi League in Palestine took upon itself the task of breaking the apathy of the world community to these events . . . by the representatives of Satan, in an appropriate manner." Each postcard includes the text: "Send this card to everyone you know in the world and participate in the disclosure of the Nazi crimes," and each reproduces a captioned photograph such as "Death in the wake of Hitler," "The work of Nazi hangmen," "The Nazi murderers enjoy themselves," etc. Exceptionally scarce. As of 2017, no other complete albums are for sale in the trade. Rare Book Hub shows only three auction records. OCLC shows four examples are held by institutions; two in the United States and two in Europe, however the two in the United States are identified as later printings.

Riga: Izdvnieciba “kamf”, 1940. Riga: Izdvnieciba “kamf”. 1940. Paperback. Yid2, sovyid1, holo15 . Original Orange printed paper wrappers, showing distinctive elements of both modern and traditional typeface. 8vo, 24 pages, 21 cm. In Yiddish. Rare 1940 Riga edition of the 1936 Soviet constitution, certainly one of the last Yiddish publications in Latvia; OCLC-Worldcat literally lists not a single Yiddish publication from Riga 1941-1987. “Immediately after the establishment of German authority [in Latvia] in the beginning of July 1941, the elimination of the Jewish and Roma population began, with major mass killings taking place at Rumbula and elsewhere. The killings were committed by the Einsatzgruppe A, and the Wehrmacht. Latvian collaborators, including the 500–1, 500 members of the Arajs Commando (which alone killed around 26, 000 Jews]) and other Latvian members of the SD, were also involved. 30, 000 Jews were shot in the autumn of 1941 with most of the remaining Jewish people being rounded up and put into ghettos. In November and December 1941 the Riga Ghetto became crowded and to make room for the imminent arrival of German Jews, who were being shipped out of the country, all the remaining 30, 000 Jews in Riga were taken from the ghetto to the nearby Rumbula Forest and shot” (Wikipedia, 2016) . SUBJECT(S) : Soviet Union. Konstitutsiia (1936) -- Politics and government. OCLC lists only 1 copy anywhere (Harvard) . Only the lightest wear to wrappers, an amazingly well-preseverd copy of this exceedingly rare Yiddish imprint. (yid-26-6) .

Barth, Karl:
Zollikon-Zürich: Evangelischer Verlag 1940-67. - Registerband fehlt. (BBKL I, 384-396). - Einbände teils stark (stock-)fleckig und teils dezent angestaubt. Blätter verschiedengradig gebräunt. Kiddie Kandids, 1940. Near Fine. An archive pertaining primarily to a Santa Claus promotion in the 1940s revolving around the classic photo pose of children with Santa. Included are 21 photos measuring between 4.5" x 5.5" and 8" x 10" as well as an informational packet and a map of the United States that shows the cities using the promotion. All items are near fine or better. The photos were provided to department stores by Kiddie Kandids out of St. Louis, Missouri and came with a folder entitled Operation Santa Claus 1948 with an intricate 13-page explanation of how the experience worked. The packet begins with a "who, what, when, where, and how much" for the store to look through. The who and what sections explain that "all the kiddies that come to see Santa at Christmas time will have a natural unposed record of their visit in a good candid flash photograph." It goes on to say "a picture will be taken of every child that visits Santa and the parent will be given the opportunity to purchase it." The photos are to be taken between October and December because they are "of Christmas rather than for Christmas" and thus need to be completed before the holiday itself. Each photo will be 5" x 7" and come with a matching Christmas folder at "one photo for $1, three for $2, or six for $3." The company emphasizes the need for a hidden camera throughout the literature because their goal is to truly capture the magic of meeting Santa through a candid photo. "The camera will be concealed in a stand. The child approaches by steps, ramp, or passage-way on the opposite side of Santa fr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Brittain, Vera
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1940. Octavo, in brick-red, cloth-covered boards, with contrasting (black) square, lettered in red, to front board and spine. Bright copy with just a bit of light rubbing to extremities at spine caps and corner, two of which are bumped, but not significantly. One or two very small discolorations to boards-very small. Vera Brittain's signature only, in ink, underscored, to front free endpaper. Testament of Friendship is a remarkable account of a deep and abiding literary friendship between two successful novelists. Brittain and Winifred, both deeply affected by the Great War, "...saw themselves, in a sense, as part of the generation of "surplus women", who, as a result of the deaths in the war of three-quarters of a million British men, might never find husbands..." "Although we didn't exactly grow up together, " Vera Brittain once wrote of her relationship with fellow writer Winifred Holtby, "we grew mature together and that is the next best thing." For 16 years, ...the two women had enjoyed a close companionship. As friends they had been intimates. As writers they were the most decisive influences on each other's work. It was a relationship, above all, that made significant contributions to the writing of two bestselling masterpieces, which have stood the test of time: Brittain's memoir of the cataclysmic effect of the First World War on her generation, Testament of Youth, and Holtby's South Riding, her novel about a Yorkshire community struggling in the grip of the Great Depression of the Thirties. After Holtby's death, Brittain memorialis … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOUSEHOLD, GEOFFREY
Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1940., 1940. First edition. First U.S. edition. Dust jacket art by Tom Lea. Near fine in price-clipped dust jacket with light wear to spine ends and the extremities. Pisco Gabar enjoyed drinking and because of this he forgot to blow the horn of warning that hung where the mule trail narrowed to a one way trail along the sheer face of the Andean cliff. Being an atheist and hater of priests, he came face to face with Don Jose-Maria, a genuine believer of the Church. Neither could go anywhere so they sat down to settle their differences each trying to outface the other. How they strike a bargain for Pisco's immortal soul and how he lives up to the bargain, forms a tale that keeps the reader on the edge of the world. This is only one of twelve exciting short stories.
