This was distributed as a new year’s greeting and is an underground work given the political circumstances of the time. Issued in a limited edition of three hundred numbered copies. The woodcut cover, title and tailpiece by Brauner are from the first edition from 1909 of Marten's book of poems and essays, Kniha silných, in which this piece on Lautréamont is extracted. It was not published by Strand Magazine in the UK until later in the year August 1940 and then did not appear in book form until "The Labours Of Hercules" in 1947. This Strand magazine story is SIGNED " AGATHA CHRISTIE London 1948". Illustrated by Ernest Ratcliff this magazine also has stories by Beverley Baxter, Dale Collins, Will Scott etc. Front and rear cover is loose with some folds on the bottom of the front cover. Magazine is in very good condition for its age. Age appropriate pages all present and stapled correctly. Staples rusty. Strand Magazines with stories by Agatha Christie are becoming more difficult to find and even more so as this copy has been signed by the Queen of Crime herself, Agatha Christie and as such is very rare and possibly a one-off. Principal text in Japanese and ancillary text in English. Printed and bound in Japan. Black buckram binding with lightly faded gilt-stamped lettering to the spine. Gently bumped spine head and tail, and with moderately bumped corners. A few puckering areas front and back. Some rubbing and wear to covers but overall a rather clean binding. 14 x 10.75 inches. Text block firmly bound in. With 53 numbered pages of Japanese text and with 17 small figures distributed throughout the text section. Followed by L [fifty] full-page B&W collotype plates with multiple images from photographs of bronze vessels. All 50 plates appear to be in very good plus to near fine condition. Slight age-darkening to the plate pages, hardly noticed. Also with 13 pages in English, including preface, table of contents and a summary of the Japanese text in. A very clean copy. Lacking the slipcase. Very Good Minus. Scarce in any condition. This volume, as the title suggests, focuses on ancient Chinese bronze vessels including a typological classification and a detailed study of the various shapes of these vessels. On the verso of the map are the 1940 schedules for "major conference schools," plus pictures and descriptions of rugged outerwear manufactured by Albert Richard Co., Milwaukee. This menswear company published a series of football maps from the late 1930s to early 1950s, all brightly colored and full of information for the sports fan. An exceptional piece for the sports fan, these pictorial map posters combine great graphics with fascinating information and an interesting historical spin. In fact the 1941 map in the series is documented in "Eyes of the Nation: A Visual History of the United States" (2004) by Vincent Virga and Alan Brinkley: "Derived from the nineteenth-century English games of soccer and rugby, American football emerged as an inter-collegiate sport in the 1870s and as a professional sport in the 1890s. Une avec au dos une invitation sur l'Art Polonais au Musée d'Art Moderne LEDUC Adrien Auguste ; manufacture de Sèvres. Décorateur ; chef du laboratoire ; formes et décors à la MANUFACTURE DE SEVRES entre 1919-1954. - De l’Art Déco à l’abstraction. Le courant Art Déco s’impose à Sèvres avec l’arrivée d’une jeune équipe d’artistes. De cette collaboration naissent d’autres créations très fortement liées aux tendances du style 19 caractérisant la période de l’entre deux guerres. Ainsi, le décorateur Jean Beaumont n’hésite pas à mélanger les tons primaires et apporte un style neuf par son interprétation florale moderne. Les décorateurs, à l’exemple d’Adrien LEDUC, Maurice Herbillon, ou encore la créatrice Anne-Marie Fontaine, participent à cet élan. A la fin des années 30, l’ornement est jugé trop envahissant L’adoption des motifs géométriques vient chasser les effets naturalistes des décors floraux. Dans les années d'après guerre, les artistes Jacques Despierre et Camille Hillaire insufflent un nouveau style de décor à Sèvres au moment où le courant de l’abstraction tend à restreindre la place du florilège et en livrer une nouvelle interprétation. A single deluxe large print, sheet size 35 x 46 cm., woodblock printed by hand on hand-made paper, carved by Maeda, printed by Honda, Uchikawa & Ogawa. ** FIRST & ONLY LIMITED NUMBERED EDITION OF 150 COPIES ** Cited in R. Miles: THE PRINTS OF PAUL JACOULET, illustrated as #69, descriptive text on page 105. Per Miles, he states that the edition of 150 were fully printed, intended edition of 350 but fewer than 150 impressions were actually done.His comment: "This is the finest, of Jacoulet's Korean worker series, which he never formally offered as a series.crit- ics consider these are the finest of all the artist's sets. Note the gauffrage that indicates the paint level in his bowl, and the raised decorations on the pot, made with an additional block." Sealed with the butterfly in cinnabar just below Jacoulet's pencil signature. The paper also has a "PJ" watermark in the lower left corner and was published 22 September, 1940. The print is basically a very nice copy, with some marginal toning, and without any other real flaw to mention. Framed & glazed. A copy recently sold at auction for $1500.

L'idylle entre Georges Bataille et Denise Rollin durera quatre ans entre octobre 1939 et l'automne 1943. On connaît peu de détails de leur vie sentimentale durant cette période d'Occupation sinon ce que Bataille veut bien nous en apprendre dans Le Coupable qui s'inspire pour une part de cette relation passionnée et douloureuse. Alors qu'il est à Paris, elle est à Vézelay et la séparation lui pèse : « Il y a des moments où il semble que tout devient impossible. Ce qui est arrivé, une pareille séparation a quelque chose qui me donne de la fièvre. » La France est en guerre, Bataille a perdu ses deux amis les plus proches : Roger Caillois et Michel Leiris, pour des raisons idéologiques. Terriblement seul, il alterne entre déprime et exaltation amoureuse : « Je t'écris cela parce que vois-tu il est impossible de ne pas surmonter à un moment donné. Je me laisse broyer plusieurs heures en pensant à tous ces déchaînements sans fin qui me séparent de toi. » Dans cette solitude, Denise Rollin apparaît comme un repère pour lui : « Et puis tout à coup en face de toi, plus près de toi que jamais, je redeviens absolument dur et plus fort que ce qui nous broie ensemble. » Elle est tellement essentielle à son bien-être qu'il conclut sa lettre en la suppliant : « [...] il faut que tu aies en moi une confiance toute simple. La séparation vient de se produire mais Bataille s'empresse d'écrire : « J'ai hâte de mettre la lettre à la poste, elle vous suivra de très près, comme tout ce que je suis voudrait vous suivre partout. » Pour l'apaiser, il cherche dans les évènements des indices de bon augure : « La sirène que vous avez entendue à l'instant même où nous avons été séparés l'un de l'autre annonçait une fin d'alerte. [3 ou 4 juin 1940], 20,9x26,9 cm, 2 pages sur un feuillet. - lettera autografa firmata da Georges Bataille Denise Rollin, a matita.   - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Touchante lettre autographe signée de Georges Bataille à Denise Rollin, 37 lignes à la mine de plomb, petite mouillure en haut à droite, sans atteinte au texte. Georges Bataille tente de rassurer sa compagne Denise Rollin : « Je t'en supplie. Il ne faut pas t'inquiéter, mais pas du tout. » Elle est partie s'installer à Vézelay où Bataille la rejoindra bientôt. Il est resté à Paris où les bombardements ne perturbent en rien la vie des parisiens : « Tu n'imagines point à quel point les petits dégâts qu'on voit paraissent insignifiants à côté de la place intacte qu'il y a de tous les côtés. Pendant toute l'alerte, j'ai déjeuné bien tranquille avec mon chef de service de passage à Paris (il vit au front) [...] »  Bataille n'a pas renoncé à son emploi de bibliothécaire à la Bibliothèque nationale. Tuberculeux, il n'est pas envoyé au front et il en profitera pour rédiger plusieurs textes à cette époque tels que Madame Edwarda ou Le Coupable. Plus loin, il évoque une visite : « Un peu après, Henri Michaux est venu me voir [...] » Les deux hommes avaient participé à la revue Mesures et avaient en commun d'être à part de la nébuleuse surréaliste.
