The various republics were represented by carefully planned pavilions, drawing on local design elements, while stressing the advances made under communism. In 1958 the show was recreated as a permanent exhibition, the Uzbekistan pavilion being based on the original design, the ornate gazebo of which is featured on the front board of this book. John Fante
New York: Viking Press, 1940. First edition of the author's third book, a collection of short stories. Very good condition in decorated cloth binding in very good price-intact dustwrapper. The cloth covers are a bit worn, but the interior of the book is clean and sturdy. This is a DEDICATION COPY inscribed by Fante on the front endpaper to Carey McWilliams. The inscription reads "To the spirit of Carey McWilliams, where I burn old rags and chow-mein - J Fante" There is a handwritten asterisk after the word chow-mein and below Fante's signature he repeats the asterick and then handwrites "apologies to Agnes Snedley". McWilliams is one of two dedicatees to this book (the other being Ross Wills). McWilliams was a close friend of Fante, correspondent for many years, novelist, reporter and finally editor of The Nation for over twenty years. FANTE, John (stories); ANGELO, Valenti (illustrations)
The Viking Press, New York, 1940. Fante's third book and first collection of short stories, nine of which had previously appeared in the pages of Mencken's The American Mercury between 1932-1937. The stories, some deeply autobiographical, portray the lives of working-class Italian Americans in a Colorado town, and demonstrate the reach of Catholicism into nearly every facet of daily life. The book was well-received upon publication. "After the mixed reviews of Ask the Dust, the critics were again enthusiastic. The New York Times found Fante's talent lying "over each page bright as sunlight on fresh green grass." Steinbeck himself, impressed enough to break his rule against publicizing other writers, allowed himself to be quoted: "This is a warm good book which has in it forgotten things which should not have been forgotten." And Time called Dago Red "perhaps 1940's best book of short stories" (Cooper, Stephen. Full of Life: A Biography of John Fante, pp.185-186). The book would remain out of print for over four decades, prior to Fante's work being brought to the attention of Black Sparrow Press publisher John Martin by Los Angeles poet Charles Bukowski, who boldly declared "Fante was my God." With the addition of several stories, Martin would publish the 13 stories from Dago Red in 1985 under the title The Wine of Youth. COAN, p.168; HANNA 1133. Octavo (20.75cm); blue-gray buckram, with titling and decorations stamped in maroon on spine and front cover; maroon topstain; dustjacket; [12], 211, [3]pp; illus. WOOLF Virginia
1940. First edition. Large 8vo., original pale blue cloth, dust jacket with portrait of Roger Fry by Vanessa Bell. London, The Hogarth Press. One of Woolf?s closest friends, the artist and critic Roger Fry died unexpectedly in 1934. Virginia was asked by his sister Margery Fry to write his biography, the undertaking proved to be something of a struggle, not only due to the ??grind? of factuality, but from too much pressure from relations and friends? (Lee). The end result was a book ?full of what ?must be left unsaid?? (Lee), with Woolf censoring important details of Fry?s life for the sake of Roger?s family and loved ones; she understated Fry?s homosexuality, left out any mention of his affair with Vanessa Bell, and forwent discussion of his wife?s early struggle with mental illness. The book was in the end criticised by those who felt it left out too much, and by others for what Woolf left uncensored. Neat name on the front paste-down, otherwise an excellent copy, in dust jacket, with a small portion missing from the head and tail of the spine and subsequent fading to the spine. Kirkpatrick A25a. John Wisden
This 1940 Original Hardback Wisden has undergone some restoration and is now in good condition. The front and rear boards are flat and unmarked. The gilt has been restored to the front cover. The spine is sturdy. There are a couple of areas where the cloth has raised a little towards the foot of the spine and this should be visible from the photograph. The gilt has been restored to the spine. Internally, the front and rear hinges have been repaired and are now tight and the contents are complete and unmarked and in very good condition. 1940 is such a difficult year to find in collectable condition in hardback and this now represents a good example at a very competitive price. John Wisden
This 1940 Original Hardback Wisden is one of the best that we have seen for this year. The only drawback is that the book is an ex-reference library copy but the only indications of this are a small stamp to the front of page 3 (see photograph) and the odd circular reference library stamp of which there are probably about a dozen throughout the book (see photograph). Reference library copies are normally in far better condition than ex public library copies - they have not been removed from the library at any stage and quite often it would appear that they have had minimal handling throughout the years as is the case here. The front and rear boards are in excellent condition and the gilt is bright to the front board. The spine is once again in excellent condition with the gilt bright. The front and rear hinges are sturdy and strong and the contents are complete, original and, save for the odd tiny library stamp, in absolutely excellent condition. A really excellent copy. Thomas, Dylan
London Dent 1940. First edition. The book is reasonably firmly bound in clean, slightly faded green boards, the corners and spine ends are bumped. The text block is slightly toned and dusty with spots of foxing. The dust jacket is the original and not price clipped, it is slightly toned and faded, more so to the spine, with short closed tears, small chips and light rubbing to the edges. A first edition of Thomas' excellent collection of semi-autobiographical short stories, which bear favourable comparison with those of James Joyce in the Dubliners. Despite the denials from Thomas, it is hard to believe that the title is not a parody of Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, indicating perhaps an acknowledgement of the influence. Quite uncommon as a first edition in the dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Churchill was a British statesman who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. He was also an officer in the British Army, a non-academic historian, a writer and an artist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his overall, lifetime body of work. As a young army officer, he saw action in British India, the Anglo-Sudan War, and the Second Boer War. He gained fame as a war correspondent and wrote books about his campaigns. Before the First World War, he served as President of the Board of Trade, Home Secretary, and First Lord of the Admiralty as part of Asquith's Liberal government. During the war, he continued as First Lord of the Admiralty until the Gallipoli Campaign caused his departure from government. He then briefly resumed active army service on the Western Front as commander of the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. Willa Cather
SAPPHIRA AND THE SLAVE GIRL by WILLA CATHER ALFRED A. KNOPF, N.Y., 1940 (#467 of only 520 signed copies) WILLA SIBERT CATHER (1873-1947) was an American author who achieved recognition for her novels of frontier life on the Great Plains, in works such as O Pioneers!, My Ántonia, and The Song of the Lark. In 1923 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for One of Ours (1922), a novel set during World War I. SAPPHIRA AND THE SLAVE GIRL is CATHER'S last novel, published in 1940. It is the story of Sapphira Dodderidge Colbert, a bitter but privileged white woman, who becomes irrationally jealous of Nancy, a beautiful young slave. The book balances an atmospheric portrait of antebellum Virginia against an unblinking view of the lives of Sapphira's slaves. The story takes place in 1856 and ends with an epilogue that takes place 25 years later. THE BOOK: This is a SIGNED, LIMITED, 1st EDITION that is #467 of only 520 copies. The book comes in the original slipcase and dust jacket. The DJ is a plain white wrapper with the title on the spine (see Ill. #1). As you can see, the spine is darkening from sun exposure while sitting in a bookcase for many years. The slipcase is a heavy cardboard box, that is covered with a plain whitish paper that shows some minor tanning, especially around the edges--the box is strong and undamaged. The book is "LIKE NEW" in that it has probably never been read. The inside front and back cover linings show some very light foxing but the rest of the pages are clean and bright. The Green Cloth spine with gilt stamped lettering and green paper covered boards with … [Click Below for Full Description]

Forster, E M
London: Macmillan, 1940. First edition. Covers showing a bit of a stain; one corner bent; general light soil. 12mo, 32pp pamphlet in wrappers, stapled. Published as the third in the publisher's series of Macmillan War Pamphlets. This copy has been inscribed by Forster on the inside front wrapper: "C.H.C.B. from E.M.F. 6-12-40". The recipient was Forster's friend Collins Baker (Charles Henry Collins Baker), art historian and Blake specialist whom Forster came to know while both worked at the National Gallery. Forster would publish an obituary tribute to his friend upon Collins's death in 1959. A delicate pamphlet that, while by no means rare, is seldom encountered with a Forster inscription.

1940. BAUM, L. FRANK. Der Zauberer Von Oz - Ein Marchen [The Wizard of Oz - A Fairy Tale Translated from the American by Ursula v. Wiese]. Zurich: Morgarten - Verlag, 1940. First Edition in German. Illustrated with 12 full page photographs of Judy Garland in the 1939 American film. By 1940, Europe was at war and the relations between the USA and Nazi Germany were extremely poor. American books and films were banned. For example, the Nazis allowed the publication of a German edition of Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind in 1937, but shortly after it became a banned book. This first translation into German of The Wizard of Oz would not be allowed to be published in Germany, so this Swiss publisher produced the book for the German readers of Europe well knowing that good portion of the edition would be imported into Nazi Germany. A rare book printed in a small edition. Hardbound in full blue cloth stamped with red lettering. Neat small vintage fountain pen former owner's name on front pastedown. Very good copy.
