1940's Lot of 4 ORIGINAL CHILDREN'S BOOK PAINTINGS "THE BIGGEST PUDDLE" FREE SHIPPING to the US & Canada! Lot of 4 ORIGINAL CHILDREN'S BOOK ART "THE BIGGEST PUDDLE" ARTIST - Three of the four illustrations are signed COLE at the bottom left hand corner, an as yet unidentified American artist. TITLE - Four original illustrations for a Children's book/story entitled "THE BIGGEST PUDDLE" . MEDIUM - PASTEL ON ILLUSTRATION BOARD. DATE - Undated, but probably circa 1940's. There are a total of four (4) pieces of original art interior pages three of which are numbered #1, 5 & 14. Three of the pieces have typed labels taped on the verso with titles, page numbers and corresponding text from the book/story. Each piece of art measures 10" x 10" done on 12" x 12" illustration board. The typed titles on the verso are: #1 Boy and girl in rainclothes. #5 Rainclothes in the closet. #14 Puppy on lawn. A lovely lot of bright original artwork that was used for four interior pages of a Children's book/story entitled "THE BIGGEST PUDDLE" possibly written by Adeline F. BRUNNER whose name and California address appear on the typed paper label on the verso of the first painting. The story appears to revolve around a brother and sister who save a foolish puppy during a rain storm. The image of the two young children in very striking yellow and white rain gear in the first painting along with the 3 other images including the lost puppy are quite charming. The style of art suggests a Scandinavian influence and is incredibly fresh looking as if done yesterday! This is original artwork that is probably … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kyle, Elisabeth
London Peter Davies 1940. First edition. Inscribed to the front endpaper: "With Elizabeth Kyle's kindest regards Sundrum Castle September 16. 1940". The book is firmly bound in clean, patterned green cloth, lettered in lighter green to the spine, the extremities are slightly bumped and rubbed. The text block is slightly toned and dusty with some minor marks. The dust jacket is the original and not price clipped, it is a little toned, rubbed and nicked, with short closed tears and minor staining. Noted in Elsa Radcliffe's Gothic Novels of the Twentieth Century, Broken Glass is appropriately set in a Transylvanian Castle occupied by a brother(Count Paul Lukats) and sister, who lure a wealthy young Rumanian to their home as part of a plot to restore Transylvania to Hungary. An uncommon find, particularly inscribed and in the original dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

1940. Condition: Très bon état. LETTRE AUTOGRAPHE SIGNÉE DE GEORGE HERRIMAN À ROY WILDER Jr. 22 JUIN 1940 1 feuillet 215 x 279 mm 1 enveloppe 97 x 170 mm. [Click Below for Full Description]

Minor wear to corners, front free endpaper removed, rear endpaper just beginning to split along hinge, but binding holding tightly. 1940 Hard Cover. xi, [1], 359, [1] pp. 8vo. Introduction by Dorothy Canfield Fisher. "Right from the start, Bigger Thomas had been headed for jail. It could have been for assault or petty larceny; by chance, it was for murder and rape. Native Son tells the story of this young black man caught in a downward spiral after he kills a young white woman in a brief moment of panic. Set in Chicago in the 1930s, Wright's powerful novel is an unsparing reflection on the poverty and feelings of hopelessness experienced by people in inner cities across the country and of what it means to be black in America. Teresa Wilms Montt / Richard P
Shanghai, China: Chiu Yih Book Company, 1940. Condition: Very Good binding. Limited, Second Edition in English, of Teresa Wilms Montt's Lo Que ne se ha Dicho. Wilms Montt was a friend of many preeminent Latin authors of the early 20th century, being an anarcha-feminist and author herself, active in Chile, Argentina, and Spain. Her literary work employs themes of eroticism, personal grief, and spiritualism; truly, the opening words of her "Three Songs" best encapsulate Montt's motifs: Sing! Pray! Weep! She is further described as "embodying sexual aberrance and social prophecy" in Keith Richards' Themes in Latin American Cinema (p. 181), in response to the biographical movie on her tragic life. The original publication, Lo Que Ne Se Ha Dicho, is a collection of her works, published in Chile the year after her suicide in 1921. With an introduction, "Pages of my diary," "With Uplifted Hands," "The Three Songs," "From the Diary of Sylvia (notes for a novel.)" and "Anuari." In her article "Writing to the Dead" in the Asymptote Journal, Jessica Sequeira notes that "Anuari" was thought lost, as "the poems [here titled "Anuari"] correspond to those of In the Stillness of Marble," a separate set of poems by her. The translator, Richard P. Butrick, future director general of the Foreign Service, was stationed in Chile in 1921-'22 when the work was first published, and was then transferred to a post in China. The limitation page states the First Edition of this translation was ten copies only, printed by Hankow Herald in Hankow, China, and the Second Edition was limited to twenty five … [Click Below for Full Description]

Carol Binkett
Carbondale PA area: , 1940s. Carbondale PA area, 1940s. Seventy-two (72) Pencil and crayon elaborate and detailed drawings by a young girl, who appears to have a very large family. No detail is too small for this young artist beginning with the title page "The Big Drawing Book by Carol Binkett. Each letter is colored with a different color crayon. From her first chaotic drawing titled "The Color Family" that includes 13 children in a kitchen - scenes such as a boy atop a dish cabinet (filled with multi-colored dishes) His clothing and the vase are one color and the flowers are another. The three (3) girls putting away dishes have stacks of plates and cups all in different colors. Beyond the color, all of the children are working cooperatively and smiling. The art is naive and remains that way with only minimal improvement as she ages, but the degree of detail and story sequences built into each drawing is of particular note. Subject matter crosses a variety of areas from holidays and sporting events to lessons in etiquette and morality. A majority of the scenes feature predominantly girls and often have a sign "No Boys Allowed". Beginning in the third grade multiple scenes or panels are introduced to tell a progressive story. The most detailed pages include 12 panels. Carol appears to be dyslexic with backwards letters strewn throughout. Misspellings are frequent and have been annotated in italics. The titles of the drawings follow With far too much content to discuss click HERE for a detailed overview of the images. The drawings in grades 2-6 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rare Large Original WINSTON CHURCHILL Copper Printers Plate Rare large original copper printing plate bearing the image of Winston Churchill. The plate is mounted onto a mahogany block of wood of 2.1cms thickness, and has black ink stains as you would expect from a printers plate. On the reverse of the plate there is a fragment of the actual image that would be produced by the plate and paper from an old magazine. Plates of this type and size are quite rare to find as most would have been destroyed after the print run. Winston S. Churchill
London: Ministry of Information, 1940. Navy Estimates: Statement by the Rt. Hon. Winston Churchill in the House of Commons on the 27th February, 1940 Winston S. Churchill London: Ministry of Information, 1940 First edition, only printing Condition: Near Fine This scarce wartime pamphlet is the first and only stand-alone publication of then-First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill's speech in the House of Commons of 27 February 1940 . "I come before the house, on behalf of the Navy, to ask for a few men, some ships, and a little money, to enable them to carry on their work, which has become important to us all at the present time." Thus Churchill began this speech in the perilous, early months of the Second World War. This pamphlet publication of Churchill's speech in self-wraps is printed on quite thin, cheap wartime paper, staple-bound with a drop-head title and no title page. It measures 9.75 x 6.375 inches and is 8 pages in length. Though 15,250 copies were printed, the extreme fragility of the wartime paper means that copies seldom appear. This copy is in near fine condition. The pamphlet remains crisp, clean, and complete with no previous ownership marks and no spotting, soiling, or appreciable age-toning of the paper. Both binding staples are intact and uncorroded. The only flaws to note are two tiny rust spots in the left blank margin of the front cover, presumably from another pamphlet with which this one was long stored. The pamphlet is protected within a removable, archival mylar sleeve. Churchill had served as First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911-1915 until … [Click Below for Full Description]
