Kotgarh, Simla Hills, India: Satyanand Stokes. Very Good with no dust jacket. c1943. First Edition. Hardcover. c600 pages; 415 of various writings ranging from one to ten or so pages each. Pages are original typing [not carbons]. INDIA: : British Colony: : India Office: : Rebellion: : . Freedom Struggle/ A gathering of writings, memoranda, essays and letters regarding the state of India under British rule. Mid 1940's. He dicusses customs, laws, and events that went into shaping the colony. Stokes (16 August 1882 - 14 May 1946) was an American who settled in India and participated in the Indian Independence Movement. Begar' (forcible labour) was prevalent in Shimla hills at that time. Under the ‘begar' system the local Rajas and the Britishers forced the poor and ignorant hill men to do free labour although they were required by law to be paid. He was a social reformer and educationalist of some note. Due to his ceaseless campaiging, letters and approachs to those in power this was eventually eliminated from the Shimla Hills. He was reputedly the only American to participate in the Freedom Struggle of India. Mr. Stokes was charged of sedition and promoting hatred against the British government and served prison time. In one his articles Mahatma Gandhi praised the efforts of Mr. Stokes and said that Mr. Stokes was the first American to go to jail for India's freedom struggle. An intriguing look into the early mechanics of India's eventual emancipation. He played a prominent role in freeing India. This is an original typed manuscript produced by this firebrand. The whole written in Englash language text. The book is in Good condition with a leather spine over vloth boards. 13.25 x 8.25: 7 pounds. One memoranda was printed and submitted to Punjab Conress and is included with original wraps. Binding firm.         The Wave of the Future: A Confession of Faith

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company 1940 - Small 8vo., black cloth lettered in gilt; slightly rubbed. First edition, fourth printing. A presentation copy, inscribed: "To Lois and Phil Jessup with gratitude for our meeting, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, April 1977," on the title page; with Philip C. Jessup's ownership signature on the front endpaper. ---- The recipient Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice and veteran U.S. diplomat, was credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. Jessup was a U.S. representative to the United Nations General Assembly, as well as a member of the International Court of Justice at The Hague. He also served as a U.S. ambassador at large from 1949 until his resignation in 1953. During that time, he was one of the closest advisers of then-Secretary of State Dean Acheson. After Jessup was maligned by Senator Joe McCarthy for purported communist "affinities," General Dwight D. Eisenhower heralded Jessup's "devotion to the principles of Americanism." McCarthy's charges kept Jessup from being reappointed to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in 1951 but President Harry S. Truman made him an alternate delegate the following year. A compelling presentation copy. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

1. Botschafter Henderson berichtet über Hitler, Goering, Ribbentrop. 2. Die Wahrheit über die Deutschen Konzentrationslager in amtlichen Dokumenten

His Majesty's Stationary Office, London 1940 - Quarto. 34, 44pp. Original stapled tan wraps with black lettering on cover; protected by modern mylar. Publisher's device on title pages. 1. Final report by ambassador Sir Nevile Henderson, G.C.M.G., on the circumstances that led to the end of his mission in Berlin, September 20, 1939. The report covers the period of Henderson's tenure leading up to the invasion of Poland and the subsequent departure of the French and British ambassadors on September 4th. In his report Henderson explicitly mentions the positive aspects of the Hitler regime, e.g. invigorating the self respect of the Germans after the defeat in 1918, the reestablished discipline in Germany and the unification of the larger Germany not without pointing to the dark side of Hitler operations, his contempt for personal freedom of thought, word or the dead which represent the ideals of the developed democracy. The report is structured to include 85 numbered entries with Henderson's explicit apology for not being able to deliver a coherent report in view of the rapid and tumultuous development of events leading up to W.W.II. 2. Documents on the Treatment of German Citizens in Germany 1938-1939 released by the British government in view of the attitude displayed by the German government after the breakout of W.W.II. The purpose was to allow the general public to form an educated opinion about the treatment of German Citizens in Germany. The documents include correspondence of ambassador Henderson with Viscount Halifax, General Consul Gainer with ambassador Henderson, correspondence of other consulate staff reporting to the British government, records received by the Foreign Office from a German charity organization on October 28, 1938, and the testimony of a former inmate of the concentration camp Buchenwald on February 18, 1939. These documents draw a frightening view of the state of affairs in Germany and its concentration camps. Text in German. Octavo, original cream cloth, original dust jacket. $1500.First edition, of ClarkÂ’s critically acclaimed first novel, basis for the Oscar-nominated film starring Henry Fonda.Though born in Maine, Walter Van Tilburg Clark was strongly inspired by the West. His first novel's tale of a mob that mistakenly lynches three innocent men ""established his reputation as the premiere literary figure of the West"" (Waldrep, Lynching in America, 180). Recognized as an American classic, it vividly ""expressed Clark's moral values directly: he believed in justice, courage, and freedom and that all people have a responsibility to defend them"" (ANB). To the New York Times, The Ox-Bow Incident was ""what you might call a masterpiece,"" and Wallace Stegner placed Walter Van Tilburg Clark ""on the permanent shelf"" of great American writers.         Pat the Bunny.

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1940. First edition, first issue. Small quarto, original pictorial stiff paper boards, original box. First issue, with the squeaking ball; because the ball's squeaker frequently failed, it was later replaced by perfumed flowers for the reader to smell. In excellent condition with the queaking ball, which no longer squeaks. Rubbing to publisher's box, lacking one (of four) flaps. Dorothy Kunhardt created Pat the Bunny for her 3-year-old daughter, Edith. It was partly an experiment in using interactive elements in a book, which was unusual at the time"Pat the Bunny came out, took off and goes on, a novelty that children never tire of... Here is a fat box-shaped book for babies and very small youngsters, pink as tooth-paste, with a trick at every turn. Paul and Judy can pat the bunny: now 'you' pat the bunny, and here he is, pure cotton wool. 'You' can play peekaboo, look in a mirror, feel Daddy's scratchy face, read Judy's book, and actually put your finger through Mummy's ring. Midway of these thrills, if a tiny finger is poked at a red ball it really squeaks" (Bader, 238). It "remains a bestseller--second only in all-time sales to [Beatrix Potter's] The Tale of Peter Rabbit" (Geraldine Baum, Los Angeles Times).

Vitamine / In frischen und konservierten Nahrungsmittein (HEINRICH HIMMLER'S COPY)

Verlag von Julius Springer, Berlin 1940 - A very-good hardcover book on a quality coated stock in a "good-only" dust jacket which has been repaired with several pieces of "Scotch" tape to recto. In addition to his studies on the occurrence of the rat anti-dermatitis factor (vitamin B6) in fish and fish products (which studies are still cited), Dr. Gulbrand Oscar Johan Lunde (1901-1942) was more infamously a minister in the collaborationist government of Norwegian Vidkun Quisling, 1940-1942. Lunde and his wife Marie died when his car fell off the ferry dock at Vage on Oct. 26, 1942. The incident was ruled an accident at the time, but the 2012 biography by Arntsen and Harestad concludes the accident was staged by German occupiers who wanted to remove a bothersome minister. (It appears Lunde was unpopular with the Nazi overlords because he favored the more narrow concept of "Norse" -- as opposed to a broader "Germanic" -- racial superiority.) That Lunde would thus have been known to German SS Reichsfuhrer Heirnrich Himmler by early 1941 -- when German police agencies were involved helping round up Jews in Norway, before the June invasion of Russia gave them bigger fish to fry -- is unquestioned. This copy dated "25/26 J. 41" and signed "H. Himmler" in green pencil in the Reichsfuhrer's distinctive and angular hand. (Please see scans.) As for provenance, we can offer none. This is a Southern Nevada thrift-shop find; we can surmise it may have been brought home from Germany by a returning G.I. in late 1945, though books from Himmler's massive hoard have continued to turn up in Germany, ever since. Der ganze Text dieses Buches ist in deutscher Sprache. The text of this volume is entirely in the German language. Small erratum slip tipped in at beginning of the bibliography (Namen- und Literaturverzeichnis) at pg. 237. Totals 272 pp. Presumably unique association copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
