[Photo Album]: U.S. Army beginning in 1940 including Hawaii and Fiji

Alabama, Georgia, Hawaii, Fiji. 1940. Oblong folio. Measuring 11" x 15". String-tied white leather over paper boards with stamped decorations and "Photographs" stamped on the front cover. Contains 586 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1.5" and 8" x 10", some with captions. Album is very good with short tears, some detached pages, and rubbing with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by an American soldier during World War II. The album begins in 1940 roughly a year before the United States officially joined the war effort. His training took place at Fort McClellan, Alabama and Fort Benning, Georgia. A small section of photos shows rows of tents and soldiers walking the grounds. Photos show the men practicing marching, standing at attention, and holding rifles. A page of ten photographs shows the Christmas celebration in 1940 at Fort McClellan with photos of long tables set out with food, decorations, and family and friends visiting the troops. The men are also seen digging trenches and fortifying them with plywood. A final section from training shows the men with a number of armored tanks. After training, the complier was sent to Hawaii in 1941 where most of the album takes place. Hawaii became central to the United States' war effort in the Pacific hosting hundreds of thousands of servicemen as they moved through on their way to and from battle. These photos show the men in their barracks as well as the sights of Hawaii including surfing, fishing, and the beautiful landscape. The people of Hawaii are also present throughout the album captured at events such as hula dancing and rodeo. The soldiers are seen posing with the hula, and numerous photos show the Hawaiian rodeo with photos of roped cattle and men on horseback. The solidiers are also shown in uniform hiking the rock faces and hills of the coast, on the beaches, in small boats, and holding birds, including a small owl and some sea fowl. 18 photo strips of the men are included showing them in group shots, candids, and portraits depicting their time on base. There are also some commercial images and postcards from the island featuring a volcano erupting, grass huts, and Malua Bridge and Tunnel. The final pages, after a break in the album, contain 79 commercial images from Fiji. It appears the soldier was shipped there from Hawaii and collected these as souvenirs. They show the native people of the island and landscape with printed captioned such as "spearing fish" and "Fijian ladies." After hearing that the Japanese had planned to use the island, US troops occupied it first and used the Fiji Islands as a staging area. Thousands of Fijians volunteered to help with the war effort by fighting and allowing the use of their land.An extensive collection of photographs detailing a soldier in Hawaii in World War II. .

Photograph album: "Thoughts on Military Life" (title in Japanese).

Japan: , 1940. Landscape quarto (215 × 282 mm). Original silk cord-backed album of black half morocco-grained cloth, bottle green velvet boards, the front deeply stamped with title in gilt together with Japanese Army Cadet insignia of a star within wreath, and motif of a steel helmet in red with gilt katana in a flurry of cherry blossom petals. Title page with "calligraphic inscription" extolling the five codes of the Imperial Precepts to Soldiers and Sailors - Loyalty, Propriety, Valour, Fai8thfulness and Righteousness, and Valour - 75 original photographs of various formats - ranging from 100 × 70 mm to 115 × 155 mm - neatly mounted on 48 black card leaves, tissue-guards remaining intact, and to verso of the free endpapers, some with carefully written captions in Japanese on shaped paper labels beneath. A little rubbed at the extremities, but overall very good. Superb personal photo album portraying the training of a Japanese infantry officer cadet at the junior division of the Rikugun Yonen Gakko - Imperial Japanese Army Academy - at Asaka in Saitama province, at the outset of World War II. Images show his family and friends; his well-appointed room with stacked arms; group portraits of cadets; the buildings on campus and locally, interiors of a mess hall, lecture theatre, and of a barrack-room; parades, and drill on the drill square; training exercises with firehoses and with howitzers, and attack training under live fire with smoke drifting across the parade ground; jukenjitsu or kendo-style bayonet training; sumo wrestling, and a traditional dance performance. A highly evocative visual document, which is further enhanced by the fact that is has the marks of having been captured and passed as legitimate "loot" with the ink-stamp "Examined in the field … passed by Joint Intelligence". It was taken by U.S. Marine Sergeant, Michael Kolesar, of Ironwood, Michigan, serving with A Co., 6th Tank Battalion, 6th Marine Division and has his ownership inscription to the front free endpaper, datelined Okinawa, April, 1945. The 6th Marine Division was the only U.S. Marine Division formed and disbanded overseas, never setting foot as a Division in the United States. It was formed on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands in September 1944, composed of the 4th, 22nd, and 29th Marines, and assorted Engineering, Medical, Tank, Headquarters, and service battalions. They landed on Okinawa, 1 April 1945, as part of III Amphibious Corps, swept through the northern Ishikawa Isthmus, and then engaged in heavy fighting against the Shuri Line located in hills honeycombed with caves and passages across the southern Coastline, fighting for over a week, and then advanced through Naha. Kolesar's tank battalion was involved in the campaign through Naha, and then the Oroku peninsula, sustaining heavy losses. For its part in an operation which came to be known as the "Typhoon of Steel" for the sheer intensity of the fighting, the 6th received a Presidential Unit Citation for "extraordinary heroism in action". The Division was prepared for the invasion of Japan which never took place, so they were sent to Tsingtao, China in October, 1945, disbanding in April 1946. Kolesar was evidently back home before the unit reached China, the Ironwood Daily Globe of 24 October 1945 recording his presentation of a Japanese rifle that he had brought back as a trophy to the local Conservation Club, he evidently retained possession of this attractive and fascinating album.

Dj With Almost No Wear, A Few Small Losses At Corners, A Very Few Short Edge Tears. Ownership Signature Of Pioneering Computer Engineer Willis H. Ware. Maria Goeppert Mayer (June 28, 1906 - February 20, 1972) Was A German-Born American Theoretical Physicist, And Nobel Laureate In Physics For Proposing The Nuclear Shell Model Of The Atomic Nucleus. She Was The Second Female Nobel Laureate In Physics, After Marie Curie. A Graduate Of The University Of G?ttingen, Goeppert Mayer Wrote Her Doctorate On The Theory Of Possible Two-Photon Absorption By Atoms. At The Time, The Chances Of Experimentally Verifying Her Thesis Seemed Remote, But The Development Of The Laser Permitted This. Today, The Unit For The Two-Photon Absorption Cross Section Is Named The Goeppert Mayer (Gm) Unit. Goeppert Mayer Married Joseph Edward Mayer, And Moved To The United States, Where He Was An Associate Professor At Johns Hopkins University. Strict Rules Against Nepotism Prevented Johns Hopkins University From Taking Her On As A Faculty Member, But She Was Given A Job As An Assistant And Published A Landmark Paper On Double Beta Decay In 1935. In 1937, She Moved To Columbia University, Where She Took An Unpaid Position. During World War Ii, She Worked For The Manhattan Project At Columbia On Isotope Separation, And With Edward Teller At The Los Alamos Laboratory On The Development Of The Teller's "Super" Bomb. After The War, Goeppert Mayer Became A Voluntary Associate Professor Of Physics At The University Of Chicago (Where Teller And Her Husband Worked) And A Senior Physicist At The Nearby Argonne National Laboratory. She Developed A Mathematical Model For The Structure Of Nuclear Shells, For Which She Was Awarded The Nobel Prize In Physics In 1963, Which She Shared With J. Hans D. Jensen And Eugene Wigner. In 1960, She Was Appointed Full Professor Of Physics At The University Of California At San Diego. Ware'S Participation In A Classified World War Ii Project To Identify Friendly Aircraft Led The Mathematician John Von Neumann To Recruit Him To Help Develop A Computer At The Institute For Advanced Study In Princeton, N.J., In 1946. That Machine Was Not The First Digital Computer, But It Was Based On A Set Of Design Ideas Described By Dr. Von Neumann That Were Broadly Influential - First On The Design Of Computers Built By Scientists Around The World, And Then On An Early Ibm Computer Known As The 701. Many Of These Concepts Are Still Visible In The Structure Of Modern Computers And Smartphones. Mr. Ware, Part Of A Small Group Of Engineers Working On That Machine, Was The First To Try To Engineer Many Of The Components That Would Become Vital To Modern Computers. His Experience In Designing High-Speed Electronic Circuits During The War Was Essential To His Work On The Computer At The Institute For Advanced Study, Said George Dyson, A Historian Of The Project.

[Photo Album]: "Why Visit the New England States?"

New England. 1940. Oblong folio. Measuring 11.5" x 15". String-tied cloth over paper boards with stamped decorations and "Photographs" stamped on the front board. Contains 82 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.75" x 4.5" and 4.5" x 6", with captions. Very good album with some age-toning and edgewear with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by three men, Charles A. Zeiler, Henry P. Pollinger, and August Lipanovich, who referred to themselves as "the three mosquitos," while traveling in New England in 1940. The album appears to have been compiled as a school assignment and is titled "Why Visit the New England States?" The album begins with pictorial postcards of the White Mountains with captions reading "scenic view of New Hampshire" and "sunset on the White Mountains." The photos and postcards are heavily captioned and detail the trip from beginning to end. One photo reads, "our trip almost ended the first day. We got stuck in the mud. Henry and Charlie pushed Augie out of the soup. The road was in Pennsylvania of course." They visited all the highlights they could think of between Pennsylvania and Maine including Plymouth Rock, Mount Washington, and "the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon." One photo reads, "Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon had nothing on the Delaware Water Gap also in the Keystone State. This picture was taken from the highway looking up the gap." They also photographed tourists throughout their travels with one candid photo reading "girl scouts at Plymouth Rock. They refused to let us take their picture so we snapped it when they were not looking. The fact that they had on shorts had nothing to do with our wanting their picture." The men visit waterfalls, hike up mountains, and visit historic sites with a photo reading, "a waterfall above Buttermilk Falls near Ithaca, New York. We all went over the lower rapids in a barrel." A photo taken in the White Mountains reads, "the top of the White Mountains was literally full of rocks. In fact the path was marked by rocks formed into a small pile. Here Henry sighs for new worlds to conquer." One photo of two of the party reads, "the boys look happy on this picture for some reason or other. In the foreground one sees the one and only worm with Sir Malcolm Lipanovich in the rear. Why has Sir Malcolm such a sly grin on the face." The final page includes business cards and tickets from throughout their trip. The album concludes with a handwritten account of their favorite attractions and a list of "things we should never do" which included such advice as "never shoot off fireworks at Old Orchard Beach, Maine," "never try to steal Plymouth Rock," and never run over a skunk with a new car."A pleasing and heavily captioned photo album detailing a trip from Pennsylvania to Maine. .

JAPAN PHILATELIC MAGAZINE / January, 1940, Vol. 2, No. 1 to December, 1940, Vol. 2, No. 12 [12 monthly issues in one volume]

Japan Postage Stamp Assoc., Tokyo, Japan 1940 - 8vo, A complete run for the year 1940. The text is in English and Japanese. A very scarce philatelic journal, which commenced publication in March 1939, and continued monthly issues until 1948, when it changed its name to Yubin Kitte. No copies currently listed for sale, and WorldCat does not show any institutional holdings. The International Society for Japanese Philately reports four volumes for 1940 to 1943 in its holdings, but only one issue (No. 3, May, 1939) from the first volume. The publisher of this journal, The Japanese Postage Stamp Association, was founded in January, 1939, with the support of the Japanese Government Postal Administration and Baron Takaharu Mitsui (known as the "Father of Japanese stamp collecting" and who was the first President of the JPSA). The binding of the bound copy which we offer for sale shows some wear. It is shaken, and the hinges are starting to crack but are still holding. Each of the monthly magazines is bound in with its title page, and each issue is in very good condition. Note: there are no records of this important philatelic journal ever having come to auction. Bound in purple buckram with faded Japanese lettering to spine [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Old Routes of Western Iran. Narrative of an Archaeological Journey.

London. Macmillan. 1940. Maps including colour map in pocket at rear, black and white photographic plates, 31 plates showing objects found, xxviii + 432pp, index, original cloth a little marked and a trifle worn in places. Library numbers in ink copyright leaf, recased with new endpapers, a few embossed library stamps. A clean and sound copy. Describes Stein's archaeological expedition during the period 1932-36.This book is among the products of Sir Aurel Stein's several visits to Iran during the 1930s for the purposes of archaeological and related research. These (and this book) are less well-known than his major journeys and excavations in Central Asia (Chinese Turkestan) from the first three decades of the twentieth century, together with the many publications resulting from them, but they are equally deserving of attention, because (as might be expected) they are zealously researched and written up, fully illustrated, and mapped.         Digby Morton skirt suit.

Approx. UK size 8. Jacket in black wool with velvet collar and rayon lining with wide lapels and label 'Designed by Digby Morton/Made by Jacqmar/ 16 Grosvenor St., London W1, with matching black wool skirt with zip to left side and label 'Digby Morton/ Grosvenor Hill/ London W1' and matching black leather-backed belt; very good condition. This New Look-style skirt suit is too extravagant, with its wide folding lapels that give the illusion of a jacket front opening over a waistcoat, to have been part of the Utility Wear scheme and must have been worth a large number of clothing coupons. Yet it would have seemed worth the expense; Digby Morton (1906-1983) was one of the top London couturiers of the time. His aim was 'to transform the suit from the strict tailleur, or the ordinary country tweed fit only for the moors, into an intricately cut and carefully designed garment, so fashionable that it could be worn with confidence at the Ritz.' (DNB). He was also closely involved in the war effort, being one of the Board of Trade's approved designers for the Utility Wear scheme and the creator of the WVS uniform. This is an unusual collaboration with Jacqmar, the fashion house celebrated for its headscarves, and is a rare piece of 1940s fashion.

Thousands of Fijians volunteered to help with the war effort by fighting and allowing the use of their land.An extensive collection of photographs detailing a soldier in Hawaii in World War II. .

        Araki.
