        Tryst for a Tragedy

      London: published for The Crime Club, by Collins, 1940. London: published for The Crime Club, by Collins,, 1940. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine in black. With the dust jacket. Very slight discolouration along top edge of boards, extremely faint spotting to fore-edge and some early leaves, with a rust-spot going from the front pastedown, through the jacket front flap and the front free endpaper, to the half title, otherwise an excellent copy in the striking, lightly rubbed jacket. First edition, first impression. Inscribed on the front free endpaper, "Maud Lang (from the authoress)" and includes, laid in, an autograph letter signed from the author "At Raven's Croft" (her boarding school, to which this book is dedicated, and which was evacuated to Thurlestone Hotel, in Devon, during the war) to the "Mrs Lang & Dorothy", dated Nov 6th [1940]. Her letter complains humorously, "It is a silly sort of life - the combination of boarding school + luxury hotel is even more fatuous than the establishments separately!", but goes on in a more serious tone: "There is just no one to 'talk' to here. I expect Dorothy remembers red-headed Mae, who played bridge with us sometimes. He was one of my oldest friends + was killed fire-fighting in September. Most of my other friends have been bombed or burnt out of their homes. What a sickening insanity it all is." Rare in any state (OCLC lists holdings in only 4 libraries worldwide, and only one copy has ever surfaced at auction), but especially so thus.

      London: Gollancz, 1940. London: Gollancz,, 1940. and Other Essays. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. A superb copy in the little tanned dust jacket. Very uncommon in this condition. First edition, first impression, one of 1,000 copies printed. Orwell may well have been the finest essayist England produced in the entire century. Despite his radical credo in his essays he remains the last of the great Victorian prose stylists. Besides the title essay, this book prints his notable studies of Charles Dickens and boy's weeklies.

        White Collar: A Novel in Linocuts

      [San Francisco, CA]. [San Francisco, CA], [c.1940]. Second printing. Paperback. Quarto [27 cm]; black wrappers with title printed in white on backstrip, illustration printed in white on front panel. Very good/very good. In the uncommon jacket. & & Introduction by Rockwell Kent. Epilogue by John L. Lewis. A classic from the Great Depression much in the style of early Ward or Masereel. First published privately just prior to World War II, White Collar has remained a biting critique of the powers that be, and at the same time championing the working class. This book is uncommon in any edition. & & "White Collar was to be my contribution to, what I believed then, an indispensable understanding of the necessity of unity among all American workers and voters. I was not a writer, so illustrations in sequence were I thought the answer. I had a printing press and lots of linoleum to use for linoleum cuts, so I set to work the idea of doing the entire job myself. I was young, naive and in a hurry, but I soon discovered that a book, a story, an ideal, each is a slow process, even with some help from the family. It took several years to engrave, print, bind and distribute a boom that was seen by a very few people who did not need convincing." -Giacomo Patri, June 1975.

        Porträt von Julius Paul Junghanns - Öl auf Leinwand, doubliert auf Hartfaserplatte;

      um 1940 / 1950.. Original-Ölgemälde mit glänzendem Firnis; dargestellt ist der Düsseldorfer Tiermaler Julius Paul Junghanns; Brustbild im Halbprofil; oben rechts signiert: "R Weber W." (das W. etwas kleiner und schwächer hinter dem Namen); verso handschriftlich bezeichnet: " Prof. Junghanns, Akademie Düsseldorf". [39 x 47 cm, Hochformat] ohne Rahmen; die Leinwand wurde vom Künstler selbst auf die Hartfaserplatte aufgezogen, da sich auf deren Rändern die selben Farben finden; guter Zustand.. Julius Paul Junghanns (* Wien 1876, + Düsseldorf 1958), Tiermaler, Schüler von Heinrich von Zügel, 1904-1945 Professor für Tier- und Freilichtmalerei an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, einer der bedeutendsten Tiermaler des 20. Jahrhunderts. // Das Bildnis zeigt den etwa 70jährigen Junghanns mit Brille im schwarzen Anzug und roter Fliege vor grünem Hintergrund. Es ist das Werk eines professionellen Malers. Ob sich hinter der Signatur einer der gelisteten Künstler verbirgt, konnte von uns nicht festgestellt werden. Ein Zettel auf der Rückseite nennt den österreichischen Landschaftsmaler Rudolf Weber (* Wien 1872, + Krems-Stein 1949), allerdings ist der Zettel noch recht neu und wahrscheinlich eine ungesicherte Zuschreibung. Mit etwas Phantasie läßt sich das "W." hinter der Signatur auch als "65." lesen (wegen des abschließenden Punktes aber unwahrscheinlich), was dann mit 1965 auf ein postum erstelltes Porträt schließen ließe oder mit 1865 das Geburtsjahr des Malers bezeichnen könnte. Auf Anfrage senden wir Ihnen gerne ein jpg-Bild der Signatur.

Three 10 inch 78 rpm records housed in card sleeves, cloth backed illustrated boards. Front joint split , bottom edge of front board worn, otherwise a nice examle of this set with the records in fine condition, but lacking the booklet. Inscribed and signed by Robeson on the inside of the front board thus: "These songs of the Spanish struggle Deeply reflect the spirit of Democracy. That spirit like Joe Hill 'never died,' This album is a 'must.'". Though by general concensus, the inscription is generic, still an intersting piece.

        Stag at Bay (Two scripts for the play and unproduced film)

      N.p. N.d., N.p. - Two scripts for "Stag at Bay" by Charles MacArthur and Nunnally Johnson, from Johnson's estate. Johnson was a screenwriter, director, and producer, and highlights of his 40 year career include "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940), "The Three Faces of Eve" (1957), and "The Dirty Dozen" (1967). Womanizing screen idol Bart Starling escapes from the Lazy Meadows Health Farm, where he has been sent to dry out by his agent, and shows up at an all-girls boarding school hoping to reconcile with his long-lost daughter, a meeting that is complicated by his interest in the school's statuesque physical education teacher, Helga. Draft script for the stage play by Johnson and MacArthur. The play, based on two incidents in the life of John Barrymore, was slated for a Broadway debut, staring Frederick March and Ingrid Bergman, in 1942 but was canceled when Barrymore died. Johnson and MacArthur continued to revise the work until MacArthur's death in 1956. The play was considered lost until it was discovered among MacArthur's papers at Florida State University, where it debuted in 1974, and subsequently gone on to a number of repertoire and off-Broadway productions. Blue studio wrappers printed with logo of the William Morris Agency, noted as copy No. 19, undated but circa 1956. Title page present with credits for screenwriters Nunnally and MacArthur. 113 leaves, mechanically reproduced. Pages Fine, wrapper Near Fine, internally bound with three gold brads.Draft typescript for an unproduced film, with a couple of brief notations by screenwriter Johnson, based on the play by Johnson and Charles MacArthur. While this script is the same story as the play Johnson collaborated on with MacArthur, the dialog is completely different, and it is clearly a screenplay rather than play script. Given that the script is dated from the time after MacArthur's death when the play was lost, and that credit on the screenplay is for Johnson only, it is likely that this script represents a solo attempt by Johnson to rewrite and revive the material for the screen. Black studio wrappers, with a printed label noting the film title and with credit for screenwriter Johnson. Title page present, carbon, dated June 1964, with credit for screenwriter Johnson. 143 watermarked leaves, typed, with notations throughout. Pages Fine, wrapper Near Fine, internally bound with three gold brads.Complete collation available on request. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        A Speech by The Prime Minister

      London: The Baynard Press, , 1940. London: The Baynard Press, , 1940. ... in the House of Commons August 20th, 1940. Octavo. 16 page pamphlet, staple-bound, with pale grey wrappers and titles to front cover in dark red. Housed in a black cloth chemise and a black morocco-backed slipcase, titles to spine gilt. Occasional small rust stains around staples, wrappers slightly foxed. Excellent condition. First edition. "If the Gettysburg Address is one of the most moving statements of democracy confronted by tragedy, Churchill&#39;s historic exhortations are its equal in their ringing assertion of democracy confronting the seemingly irresistible forces of tyranny" (PMM). The speech contains what is perhaps the best-known Churchill quotation of all: "Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few", this resounding phrase follows a rhetorical pattern long adopted by Churchill: closely similar phrasing can be found in at least five of Churchill&#39;s speeches or writings between 1899 and 1910 (see David Reynolds, In Command of History, Allen Lane 2004).

        Cybernetics or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine.Paris: Hermann et Cie., 1948. First edition.

      A fine copy of the first issue, in original wrappers, of "the first book to discuss electronic computing" (Norman). <br/><br/> &#10087; Origins of Cyberspace 991. <br/><br/> "Cybernetics was the first conventionally published book, rather than a technical report, to include a serious discussion of electronic digital computing. Writing as a mathematician rather than an engineer, Wiener's approach was, of course, theoretical rather than specific. Because so many aspects of Wiener's thought were hardly known to the scientific world, let alone to the public at large, the revolutionary aspect of this work can hardly be underestimated. Among the most informative chapters is Wiener's thirty-nine-page rambling historical introduction, in which he described his report to Vannevar Bush in 1940 on the proposed development of an electronic digital computer. That 1940 report proposed the following requirements: <br/><br/> (1) That the central adding and multiplying apparatus of the computing machine should be numerical, as in ordinary adding machine, rather than on a basis of measurement, as in the Bush differential analyzer; <br/><br/> (2) That these mechanisms, which are essentially switching devices, should depend on electronic tubes rather than on gears or mechanical relays, in order to secure quicker action; <br/><br/> (3) That, in accordance with the policy adopted in some existing apparatus of the Bell Telephone Laboratories, it would probably be more economical in apparatus to adopt the scale of two for addition and multiplication, rather than the scale of ten; <br/><br/> (4) That the entire sequence of operations be laid out on the machine itself so that there should be no human intervention from the time the data were entered until the final results should be taken off; and that all logical decisions necessary for this should be built into the machine itself; <br/><br/> (5) That the machine contain an apparatus for the storage of data which should record them quickly, hold them firmly until erasure, read them quickly, erase them quickly, and be immediately available for the storage of new material (Wiener 1948, 10-11). "Wiener, independently of Claude Shannon, conceived of communications engineering as a brand of statistical physics, and applied this viewpoint to the concept of information. However, while Shannon concentrated mainly on applications of information theory to communications, Wiener stressed its application to control problems involving other physical and complicated biological phenomena-- indeed, what made Cybernetics so significant was Wiener's "synthesis under his name of a vast variety of new developments that occurred in the 1930s and 1940s in modern technology and science. These were the times when there were rapid advances in computers, new findings in neurophysiology, tremendous progress in the development of communication systems, servomechanisms and other automation, new predictive methods connected with antiaircraft artillery. Wiener conceived all this rightly as a progress of a single science of 'control.' In fact the new breed of technological inventions of what came to be called information machines-which include computers and all means of communication-may be compared with the nervous system of an organism that serves the purpose of controlling its environment. ... Information theory clearly plays an important role in Wiener's cybernetics, but what Wiener considered information theory is a more general scientific discipline than what is usually regarded in the United States, where information theory is more or less synonymous with coding theory. Wiener with his profound background in theoretical physics, particularly in Gibbsian statistical mechanics, knew that the entropy function has been around since the time of Boltzmann and that Szilard showed that information can be used to decrease physical entropy" (Watanabe). <br/><br/> "Wieners chapter on 'Time series, information, and communication' contained the first publication of Wiener's formula describing the probability density of continuous information. This is remarkably close to Shannon's formula dealing with discrete time published in <i>A mathematical theory of communication</i> (1948). Cybernetics also contained a chapter on 'Computing machines and the nervous system.' This was a theoretical discussion, influenced by McCulloch and Pitts, of differences and similarities between information processing in the electronic computer and the human brain. It contains a discussion of the difference between human memory and the different computer memories then available. Tacked on at the end of Cybernetics were speculations by Wiener about building a chess-playing computer, predating Shannon's first paper on the topic. <br/><br/> "<i>Cybernetics</i> is a peculiar, rambling blend of popular and highly technical writing, ranging from history to philosophy, to mathematics, to information and communication theory, to computer science, and to biology. Reflecting the amazingly wide range of the author's interests, it represented an interdisciplinary approach to information systems both in biology and machines. It influenced a generation of scientists working in a wide range of disciplines. In it were the roots of various elements of computer science, which by the mid-1950s had broken off from cybernetics to form their own specialties. Among these separate disciplines were information theory, computer learning, and artificial intelligence. <br/><br/> "Though cybernetics was intended to apply electronic computing to the study of life processes, early efforts in this direction achieved very limited results. Perhaps the earliest successful electronic computer applications in biology were outside the scope of cybernetics in the study of molecular structure. Because of the great complexity of living systems it required the passage of nearly fifty years before sufficient advances in computing power enabled such endeavors as the human genome project and efforts to simulate living systems. By 2001 efforts to model extremely complex living systems using supercomputers were sometimes called 'cybernetic cells.'         The Conditions of Economic Progress.

      London, Macmillan, 1940. 8vo. In the original blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine with the orignal dust jacket (not price clipped). Dust jacket with a few small nicks and wear to upper and lower part of spine. Previous owner's name to front free end paper, other wise a very fine and clean copy including all the folded plates. XII, 504 pp. + 5 folded plates.. First edition of the author's seminal and "monumental" work which had a profound influence on Western thinking about the undeveloped world and is today considered one of the classic studies on growth. "not only gave a considerable stimulus to the subsequent development of growth theory and models but also had an important effect on western thinking about the undeveloped world. For the first time, the gulf between living standards in the rich and poor countries of the world was brought home in hard statistical terms. Well into the postwar years, until United Nations data became available, almost every writer on development economics quoted Colin Clark's estimates." (Arndt, Economic Development)Colin Grant Clark (1905-89) was a British economist and statistician. He was widely noted for his groundbreaking work in economic statistics and national income estimates pioneering the use of the gross national product (GNP); Clark was also among the first economists to use gross national product rather than national income as the basis of his studies. In 1984 he was named by the World Bank as one of the pioneers of development along with Sir Arthur Lewis, Gunnar Myrdal, W.W. Rostow and Jan Tinbergen
